IPhoto 9 library first aid really won't open
I see others have posted this problem and the fixes worked for them...however I have tried deleting relevant plists and preferences as suggested by Old Toad and others on similar threads and i have opened the app while holding down command + option keys numerous times (for upto 2-3 mins) and "literally" nothing happens the only change is the app seems to open a little faster.
The reason I need the first aid is because my HD is very nearly full 248gb used on a 250gb drive and i noticed that 40+ gb is iPhone created videos inside iPhoto. I attempted to export these 1st to dropbox and 2nd to and external drive but the result is many of these .MOV files only exported the first frame. So they appear to have exported when you click on them in the destination they open in quicktime (as expected) but show 0:00 for length and just have a static image (the first frame).
PS Am I the only one who thinks iPhoto should either handle video better or not handle it at all ? I mean for years i have just let my videos import along with my photos but when you play or file its never smooth (as now) Wouldn't it be better if iMovie responded the same way as iPhoto when detecting video files from your source (iPhone, pod pad watch etc) i.e. opening and asking if you want to import your movies or am i missing something ?
As Larry says only 2 gigs free is a major problem.
OS X needs about 10 gigs of hard drive space for normal OS operations - things like virtual memory, temporary files and so on.
Without this space your Mac will slow down as the OS hunts for space on the disk, files will be fragmented, also slowing things down, apps will crash and the risk of data corruption - that is damage to your files, photos, music - increases exponentially.
Your first priority is to make more space on that HD. Nothing else can be done until you do.
Purchase an external HD and move your Photos and Music to it. Both iPhoto and iTunes can run perfectly well with the Library on an external disk.
It's likely that your Library is damaged from being on an overfull disk. Once you've dealt with the space problem try again. If that doesn't work, post back and we can try repair it.
By the way exporting 40 gigs of video to drop box means that you will require at least 80 gigs of space on the HD - 40 for what's in iPhoto and 40 for what's in Dropbox...

Can't access Photo Library First Aid
Before I start my doubt I already did this: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2512?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
But I can't access the photo library first aid. The problem is my iPhoto doesn't let copy photos from library to ie: desktop. And then appears a window with this info: The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items.
Jeez what is this issue? I put my photos on this software because I trust on Apple products and now I don't have access to them?
Following the link I posted, a press the command button as the same time the iphoto dock logo and the Photo Library First Aid doesn't appear lol
Apple I want a solution for this problem now! All my work is inside of iPhoto libraryTry the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete the contents the following folder:
User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: For Mavericks, 10.9, go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
where you can check the Show Library Folder checkbox. -
I just backed up my photos by copying my iPhoto Library onto an external drive. Now the Library on my MacBook won't open. I can only open the photos if the external is plugged in. How can I resolve this issue?
Exactly what did you do?
The correct steps are
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
My guess is that that you have not switched iphoto to use the external drive yet - opttion launch and select libary

I had original iPhoto app from 2007 or 2008, but in the last year it stopped working seemingly out of nowhere. Now I just installed iPhoto 9.5.1 but it won't open even after downloading the iPhoto Library Updater. My pictures are lost in the abyss.
I'm using OS Extended 10.9.5. I don't know what the original version of iPhoto was.I just installed iPhoto 9.5.1 but it won't open even after downloading the iPhoto Library Updater
Have you run the iPhoto Library Upgrader? You need to direct it to the location of your old iPhoto Library by clicking the "Choose Library" button in the lower right corner of the panel you are seeing when the upgrade starts. -
I have a 2008 mac, and am trying to use the latest iPhoto app. But it won't open. I have installed the library upgrade but still won't open?
Why not? We can not see you so you have to give us details
Did you run the iPhoto Library upgrader after you installed it - if not backup your iphoto library and go to the utilities folder in your Applications folder and double click on the iphoto library upgrader and RUN i - then launch iphoto 9.6 to complete the upgrade

Hi, I was importing pictures into iPhoto from my sd card and suddenly iPhoto quit. Now it just won't open. When I click on the iphoto icon in the dock, nothing happens! Does anyone have a solution to this problem please?
As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?
If it does then your current library has been damaged and should be repaired: apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start
with Option #4 and then #1 as needed.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

I've upgraded to Yosemite. Iphoto is out of date and won't open. I'm being directed to the app store for a free upgrade but there is nothing there. being told 'upgrade is not available in the US'
iPhoto is no longer available from the Mac App Store. Update to 10.10.3 and use Photos.

I have opened the iPhoto First Aid window. When I press the repair button for the repair permissions operation, nothing happens but my iphoto opens at the place I have been stuck since July 3. What do I do now.
How big is your library? You should see the following:

IPhoto quit unexpectedly and now it won't open
I just had to have my OS erased and rewritten on my Macbook Pro at the genius bar yesterday, so today I am restoring all of my files and settings. I figured out how to open up iPhoto, and while I was backing up the pictures on an external hard drive (just to be sure!), it quit unexpectedly. The next time I tried to open up iPhoto, the library seemed to have disappeared from my mac, I found the iPhoto app in a really strange location, and when I try to open it, it says that I need to update to the newest version of iPhoto, and when I launch the upgrade, it says: "Unable to write to library 'iPhoto Library" Check that you have permission to write to the library directory. From there the only option is to click "Cancel" and iPhoto shuts down immediately.
I have tried to open the application using the Control + Option method, and have tried to perform every repair & rewrite in the menu, but every time it tells me that I am having permission errors.
Any advice?I had the whole library backed up, that's how I was able to open it to begin with, but then once it closed unexpectedly, opening that library just sends me back to the slieu of error messages... I also have the actual photos backed up though, if I could just get iPhoto to open. It seems like my mail is quitting unexpectedly too...I may need to just bring it back to the Genius bar...

Can not open iPhoto in order to access pictures in library. I haven't backed up all my photos so I am concerned about loosing my pictures. what is the safest action to solve this problem?
Start by backing up now:
Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store
Then try restart your Mac. -
Help , i just archived my iphoto library, and now it won't open
How do i unzip the library and put it back? I'm getting a message that the files are unreadable. I've had sooo much trouble with iphoto since upgrading to '06 and now this! I've been getting a messaage everytime i use the iphoto to rebuild the thumbnails, so I read about how to do it with starting with the option key etc, thought i'd also back it up and archived it to use less space on the dvd and now there are a lot of missing pictures; it's like my one library just vanished, there are none of my albums or titles etc. Anyway when I was moving the library folder to the burn folder to burn it, it just vanished, and now all I have is the archived folder.

Since posting the above I have been on the phone with a tech, I had redownload the stuffit expander, to unzip the file. I had backed up the pictures so will add them later, but here is the issue, I am very low on disk space so have added an external HD which i am trying to put photo libraries in. I printed an article "how to store libraries on exernal HD", in the rticle it says to rename the files on the original HD, can I remove them instead (after saving to disk, of course)?
Also, I have 15G of disk space we could not account for, the tech suspects hidden files, but says they do not deal with locating them and removing them, reccomended erasing HD and starting over, but would like that to be a last resort. I have four users on my machine two of which are for my grandchildren who use it mainly for "my space" and "Limewire" Has anyone here had a problem with either of these sites? I'm looking for alternaive suggestions about where the disk space has gone prior to erasing my hard drive. This is a very recent problem, and my mac is running poorly due to lack of space on the harddrive. I am moving my photo libraries to the external HD as I had planned anyway so i don't have to worry about space. It is a 250G WDC My Book Essential Edition. I am running the 6.0 iPhoto program. I am calling the support tech for iphoto but think it is unlikely that I have 15G of missing space due to photos, so could use your help. Thanks. -
PowerBookG4 with iPhoto 5.0.4 can't/won't open photos
Ok, first of all I am extremely ignorant of OSX, and especially iPhoto. I used Classic until finally forced into X. I had been using OS 10.4.11 and have upgraded my old laptop as far as it will go (to 10.5.8) recently and that is what has caused this issue. I recently lost my HD on another computer, an iMac, so this is the only computer with those particular photos on it and I don't want to mess with something I know nothing about and end up losing the data. I've had no problems with any other apps. I have not tried any updates or anything for fear of losing the photos.I know they are still on the computer as I have use Graphic Converter (yes, I still use it *L*) in slide show mode for all photos on my computer and they all show up there. I had some ideas but I am not comfortable doing any work arounds or moving anything without some input from someone that knows what they're doing.
I have heard that you should never mess with the iPhoto library, so I have done nothing with it to this point. I can launch iPhoto but as soon as the frame for the app opens, I get a message telling me I need the newest version of iPhoto to access my photos and then my only choice is to click quit. How far can I upgrade iPhoto on a PPC PowerBook G4 and where do I find the update? I have run software updater and can't find any iPhoto updates that way. Any information would be greatly appreciated. My only viable option at this point is to take screen shots of each of them as Graphic Converter shows them and start over but that seems to be a big excessive and I would like to think there is a much better and less time consuming fix. I have added my computer info for anyone that can have a look at it and let me know what would be my best option at this point. Thanks in advance for any help or ideas you have.
Model Name: PowerBook G4 15"
Model Identifier: PowerBook5,6
Processor Name: PowerPC G4 (1.2)
Processor Speed: 1.5 GHz
Number Of CPUs: 1
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 1.5 GB
Bus Speed: 167 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.9.1f1I'm sorry if I didn't make myself clear. Does it explain it better if I ask "How can I access my iPhoto library without using the iPhoto app?" Whenever I try to open iPhoto, I get this:
This began when I updated my software to 10.5.8 I don't have a newer version that I am aware of. I can find no other version on my computer and to my knowledge I have made no changes to the library. I want the pictures that are IN the iPhoto library that the GC slide show can find when it scans the hard drive for the slide show to be able to be seen in another way than in the GC slide show. I have no way to open the individual photo by clicking on it.
If I do a search for the photo by "name.jpg" it shows the path to it in a finder window. The named photo can be found in the iPhoto library folder named "data", in a folder named "year", in a folder named "month, day, year". It can also be found in iPhoto library folder named "Originals", in a folder named "year", in a folder named "month, day, year" as a jpg. document. If I try to drag and drop either from this window into Preview or Graphic Converter (for example), nothing happens and it has the 'circle/slash' (international symbol for no) over it. If I click on it, it just opens iPhoto and I get that message I posted above and have to quit. I understand that the photos won't be put into GC since it's not that type of app. I just need them to be stand alone photos that I can put in accessible folders so I can open them, print them, or move them to backup. I don't know how to access the photos that iPhoto is keeping me from viewing. The photos are still on here, and can still be seen in the GC slideshow but I have no way of accessing them other than via that slideshow. If they didn't show up in the slide show, I'd not be able to see them as photos at all. As I said in my first post, I need to back up the most recent ones since my backup HD died last week, but iPhoto won't let me access them to do it.
I'm really sorry if this is not clear and I apologize for my ignorance. I am afraid of doing something that will lose the photos since I'm not proficient in moving iPhoto data and libraries around. I want to do this so I can back up these last 20 or so photos. Thanks for trying to understand. If "How do I fix my iPhoto library" is a better question, then I'll ask that. I just want access to the photos. The app is not important to me, only being able to see and access the photos.
Thanks again for your time. -
I bought a iBook for my ipad2. It's in my library on the shelf but I cannot open it. Can anyone tell me how.... Please .
If tapping on it doesn't open it, then there are a few things hat you could try. Assuming that the books is still available in the store then you could try deleting it and re-downloading it.
You could also try closing the iBooks app completely and then seeing if you can open that book when you re-open the app : from the home screen (i.e. not with iBooks 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the iBooks app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
Another option is a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
After that it's probably a case of deleting the iBooks app itself and then re-downloading/syncing it and all your books - in which case you should first make sure that you've either got copies of all of the books on your computer or that they are still available for re-download from the store. You will also lose any notes/highlights that you've made in the app -
I have iPhoto v.8.1.2 which won't open now.
Can I re-install the iLife'09 I have to fix and if so, will I lose my current photos?
Make a back up - you should always have a back up of any important material on your mac.
Most Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate
Yes you can re-install iPhoto, but it's impossible to know if that will solve the problem without some further information.
As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there? -
Recreating itunes library when itunes 10 won't open?
So when clicking the iTunes 10 icon in the dock the icon bounces once then quits before the application will open. I've re-downloaded itunes 10, reinstalled OSX (I'm having an iPhoto problem too which seemed to justify this), removed a 3rd party visualizer and the "volume-logic" equalizer and trashed them along with the prefs and finally followed the Apple support article on re-creating the library in hopes of getting my iTunes back. My backup does the same thing so I must have backed up a corrupted itunes. While re-creating the library as per the exact instructions I got this: (It's long) Process: iTunes [3116]
