IPhoto alert

I am getting suddenly getting this message: "Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto. The upgrade process for very large libraries may take an hour or more to complete."
I cannot get into my iPhotos at all, blocked by this message. I need a step-by-step list of what actions I should take to overcome this and not lose my library.
This is very frustrating. HELP please.
I have iPhotos 9.2.1 with 267 MB on disk. Purchased this iMac in May 2011.

When I have done this in the past, it has disconnected from the library. I hesitate because I have to get help to reconnect. So, I would like to know what might happen next. Will everything be back in its place OR will I have to get help????

  • Help! iPhoto alerts pop up that say, "The photo "DSC06691.JPG" cannot be opened because the original cannot be located." I can locate original, but I have multiple images with same name!

Recently my library prompted me to rebuild due to inconsistencies that were found in library. Now alerts pop up that say it can't locate the original of an image, so I have an option to cancel or locate it. I can locate the file, however, there are usually 2 or 3 photos with the same file name! Not sure which one it is trying to locate etc. I have a feeling this is the problem. Not sure how it happened. Has anyone had this happen to them?? iPhoto library hasn't rebuilt because there are so many pop up alerts...I have a feeling it's a big problem. I am going to attempt to select one image for each one and see what happens, but I am concerned what the outcome will be.
My camera cards are already deleted (I knew I should have kept them!!). We do have time capsule, so I am assuming I can go back, but I am worried that iphoto will do the same thing. It just started doing it about two weeks ago and it didn't correspond with any photo uploads. I hope someone can help!

Are you running a managed or referenced library?
If it's a managed library apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Iphoto alert - 'can't find original' while creating ibook

I have iphoto photo book 98% complete. touching up a last few photos. An alert pops up saying can't open because the original can't be found. Photo image is in place in the book! How can the program not 'find the original'? very frustrated. I tried moving the images (8) again from Lightroom to iPhoto library. Still not working.

What happens when you go to the photo in it's Event and try to open it in the editor? Do you get the message or do you see the fuill sized version?
That alert comes up when the library has been set to be a "referenced" library (the photos not copied into the library durning import but just represented by alias files) and the original photo has been moved from the location it was in when imported.
Check iPhoto's Advnaced preferences to see if the copy checkbox is checked:

  • Iphoto alerts an error with sync pic

hi i have an iphone serial number: 80*******4T. andd a Mac serial number: W8*******50.
on my iphone i have 2000 pict, and when i start sync them to iphoto an error comes up: error with file. what should i do?
    <Serial Number Edited by Host>

  • Unable To Export Photos ???

I am in the process of exporting my 2010 photos. I successfully exported about a thousand photos. Now, once it exports approximately 150 pictures, iPhoto alerts me that it is unable to create the directory. Any help would be much appreciated!
Some history. I suspected it may be an OS issue. I have a 2TB disk drive with 1TB remaining. I have run Onyx and CleanMyMac. I have repaired permission. I also used disk utility and repaired the disk. I zapped pram. I have restarted my system. I do not know what is left for me to do.

No one knows how long a BR disk will last, they haven't been around that long. BUt maybe they will, and maybe you want to keep an old computer around just so you can read these disks that might or might not last.
My solution is to upload them images to a photo-sharing site - There are many options: Flickr, Picasa, SmugMug etc. However, check the terms of your account carefully. While most sites have free uploading, you will often find that these uploads are limited in terms of the file size or the bandwidth you can use per month. For access that allows you to upload full size pics with no restrictions you may need to pay. But even at that it's stll be cheap, plus you have the advantage of off-site back up and complete acessibility from any machine any time.
FWIW I use SmugMug basic. For $40 per year I can upload unlimited images up to 50MB in size, I can password proteect them so they stay private and so on. It's worth thinking about...

No changes were made. I saw in one of the threads where someone said to repair the database(which didn't work) or Rebuild the database(which did work). Thanks to one all for the support.

  • I keep getting an alert when I open iPhoto

Ever since I did the recent upgrade in iphoto to 9.3, i get an alert while iphoto is trying update thumbnails stating it can't find image.  I am given the option to cancel or find.  I have done both, to no avail.  There are multiple photos it can't find and can take up to 20 minutes to get through, only to have iphoto to crash when I finally get in.  Is there any way to find the photos, or make this go away.  I saw an discussion on this from 9/11, did was was suggested, but it didn't work.

I don't know if I am running a managed or a referenced library.  I tried to go into preferences under iphoto, but it won't let me in.
    From the discussion 9/11:
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a Folder called 'Import' or 'Importing'.
Drag it to the Desktop. *Make no other changes*.
    Start iPhoto. Does that help?
If it does then look inside that folder on your desktop. Does it contain anything you want? If not you can trash the folder.
I then tried to rebuild thumbnails andthen repair library, but none of this worked.

  • After Panic Alert iPhoto Gone from Screensaver

I removed the electric charge from the pc and placed pc on a chair.  Picked up pc by lower left hand side. Screensaver went horizontal w/waves moving left to right.  Three alarms sounding like an air raid alert, going down in the North Atlantic aboard an aircraft, or a ship that had just been torpedoed - in other words absolutely over the top unnecessary to tell me something's wrong.  I tried to shut down the computer the normal way - no response.  Crashed computer.  It rebooted just fine except in System Preferences screensaver the iPhoto option has disappeared.  I have a screenshot of the incident here:
The image is blurry I know.  I've increased its size to 200%.

Do I need to run Disk Utility in Safe Mode or is Regular Mode sufficient?
    Normal mode should suffice.
To repair your iPhoto Library use the First Aid Tools.
To launch the "First Aid Tools" hold down the options-command keys ⌥⌘ while double clicking your iPhoto Library.
Keep the keys held down firmly until the First Aid panel appears.
Then select  "Repair database" from the First Aid panel.
If that does not suffice, remove the preferences:
Open your user library in your Home folder and delete the following files:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist
    Delete the complete folder ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto
Then restart the system and try again to launch iPhoto
Your user library is hidden by default. To open the hidden User Library:
    Use the Finder's "Go" menu.
Click "Go", then hold down the options key, until you are seeing "Library" in the drop down menu appear and click it.
In the Finder window that will open navigate to the folders Preferences and Containers.

  • Yellow Alert Icon in iPhoto 6 on scanned photos

I just purchased a new Mac Book, 10.4.7, in Aug. I'm trying to design a photo book in iPhoto 6.0.4. I scanned in several pictures and made a practice book with them. Every photo had the yellow alert icon on it. I have downloaded new digital photo's on the new Mac Book, and made a practice book and none of the digital photos had the yellow alert icon on it.
I also have my iMac OS X, 10.3.9, that I've used for 6 years and designed many books on it with no problems. So I scanned the same photos into iPhoto 5.0.4 version, on my iMac and had no yellow alert ion's show up on them. So I just went ahead and made my book on my old iMac OS X.
Is the new technology on the new Mac Book so advanced that the iPhoto program won't accept old scanned in photos.
I even tried to change the resolution from 200 to 300 and then to 600 and the Mac Book iPhoto version still showed the yellow icon.
    Can anyone help me?
    Mac OS X   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Ms. Ethyl:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Did you by chance change any of the scanning setting for this new batch? Were you able to edit them in iPhoto 6? Try this expeirment: select one of the photos and do some very small edit. Then see if that photos still exhibits the warning triangle. If not, then it's something to do with the original file and it's format/mode.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • IPhoto Calendar low-resolution alert

I have tried to use old photos for my 2009 calendar. All the photos show a low-resolution alert. Using my present Panasonic digital camera there are no alerts. How do I increase the old photos resolution to high so that my photos will be a good quality picture.

iPhoto warns you when a picture falls below the 180 dpi level. What are the pixel dimensions of the photos you're using? If they don't fall too far below that dpi level they would probably print up satisfactory.
Do you have Photoshop Elements or PS itself?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • How can I stop alerts when starting iPhoto?

It's so annoying - I realize that at some point I moved or renamed some photos in my library because I find iPhoto very controlling in terms of making it difficult for me to find things easily or separate photos into the folders I create.
however is there not a setting to prevent iPhoto from trying to sort of calibrate files - I get about 200 alerts everytime I start up the program.
Any suggestions or references much appreciated.

1 - iPhoto is a database program as as such the organization and integrity of its data base is critical to its proper operation
I moved or renamed some photos in my library
2 - It is strongly recommended that you do not move, change, delete or otherwise modify any files within the iPhoto library - doing so may corrupt your library and lose data
There is never any need to do anything inside the iPhoto library - click here for a discussion on several of the many ways to correctly and safely access your photos.
is there not a setting to prevent iPhoto from trying to sort of calibrate files
iPhoto does not do any "calibration" of files - at start up or ever
I get about 200 alerts everytime I start up the program.
Exactly what are the alerts you are getting? THere probably is a solution but we would have to know what they are to help
Any suggestions or references much appreciated.
-- Provide the details of your problem including the wording of the alerts
-- Stay out of your iPhoto library
    -- and backup often
-- read and follow the iPhoto help topics
    Managing your iPhoto library
The best and safest way to manage your photos in iPhoto is by working with your photo library from within the iPhoto application.
WARNING: iPhoto stores your photo library within the iPhoto Library package in your Pictures folder. To avoid permanently deleting or corrupting your iPhoto library, do not attempt to alter the contents of this file.
It is a good idea, however, to routinely back up your iPhoto library to a DVD or external hard disk so you have a copy in case your photos become lost or corrupted for any reason.

  • After updating to Yosemite, I updated iPhoto. Alert said to convert my library to new iPhoto. Then alert said I needed to repair permissions. Then a freeze. Then iPhoto won't find and show my library. How do I fix this?

After updating to Yosemite, I updated iPhoto. Alert said to convert my library to new iPhoto. Then alert said I needed to repair permissions. Then a freeze. Then iPhoto won't find and show my library. How do I fix this? I can see the library icon on my external drive, but it doesn't show as a library in iPhoto. When I double click on the icon, nothing happens. When I choose it from alternate menu, doesn't open. Where do I get help?

    Peter
Do you have a back up? What version of iPhoto do you have? Assuming 09 or later:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Alert message freezes iPhoto and iMac

Most of the time when I try to work in iPhoto, a message appears "Alert... photo cannot be found". Cancelling brings up another alter message regarding another photo - these photos are ones that I did not want to keep and deleted/moved-to-trash etc. at some point in time. After receving the alter message, the only way I can continue to work on my computer is to "Force Quit" - cancelling does not help nor can I quit iPhoto through File.
    Questions:
    1. How can I prevent or delete the alter message so that I can work in iPhoto and/or continue to work on my iMac without having to force quit?
    2. I didn't receive an answer in Editing and Organizing section, so, do you have a suggestion of other programs which work better and more smoothly for iMac than iPhotol?
    Signed: Disgruntled, disappointed, and discouraged

    DDD:
I've read your other thread regarding wanting to get back to a normal library. Have you done so and are now just trying to deal with some leftover alias files in the library? I don't think you're going to be able to resurrect the current library as it is/was because the dB file is looking for files that are not there. Unless you can point each alias file to its source file you're going to have to start over with those full sized files in the Originals folder. This is assuming you've imported those original source files for the alias library.
If that's the case then here's one approach you can try.
1 - move the iPhoto Library folder to the desktop and move the Originals folder out of the iPhoto Library folder on the desktop also.
2 - open the Originals folder in the Finder and type Command-F.
3 - in the search window set the criteria to:
    Kind = Any
    Size is less than 10KB
4 - in the search results window will be all of the alias files in the Originals folder.
5 - select all of those files in the search results window and drag to the Trash.
6 - launch iPhoto and, when asked, opt to create a new library.
7 - drag the cleaned out Originals folder into the open iPhoto window.
This will import your full sized image files and get you back with a working library. The rolls in the new library will be close to the same rolls as your first library. The dates on the rolls may differ.
Once you get the new library up and running just remember not to move, rename or edit any of the files in the iPhoto LIbrary folder directly from the Finder. That's the cardinal sin of iPhoto. Just do all your organization and editing from within the iPhoto application and you should be OK from here on out.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. • IPhoto Picture Album Alert

    Hi,
I am making a picture album with iPhoto 09 and when I pressed "Buy Book" it says "Your book seems to have frames on one or more pages that do not contain photos. You must either change the layout of those pages or place photos in those frames before you can buy this book"
I think the problem is that on some of the pictures there is a little ! alert symbol in the top right of the picture. I've tried zooming the picture in and out but it won't go away.
    Thanks
    Victor

That won't be the reason for the message. Do you have any pages with a gray background? If so those are probably backgrounds that require a photo. See the screenshot below:
The triangle alert next to images indicate that the photo is below the 180 dpi minimum resolution (for that frame) that Apple has set for printing photos. They may print OK depending on how far from the minimum they are. What are the pixel dimensions of some of the pictures that show that warning and what page layout and frame are they in?
