IPhoto amazing...

I am absolutely and positively amazed with how well and stable iPhoto 6 seems to be so far.
I have a rather large library of 23,000 photos and haven't been able to use iPhoto in several months because importing caused the application to crash all the time. It'd take a long time to load the library, chugg along crash while browsing the library...importing would crash it about 8 out of 10 times when importing. I had become disenchanted and even bought iView (which ironically I got days before iPhoto 6 was released)...
Anyway, iPhoto not only converted my library over to 6.0 but also found several photos stored away in my folder that weren't loading properly into iPhoto and either imported them or gave me an option to fix permissions then continue.. I even ran out of room at one time and had to move files off my hard drive, and free up space and it still didn't crash or abort the import.
I am simply amazed. As I said, I have 23,000 photos on a G4 1Gz iMac w/ 1 GB of ram and had given up on iPhoto back at version 4... Yet tried desperately to maintain a library until I had another solution.. I can't run apreture but now that iPhoto is fixed, I don't need to right now!!!
Thanks Apple!!! I can't wait to try it out fully. Its a lot faster. It still has some slowness when loading full screen images individually but that's to be expected.. Nothing at all like it was before...still blazing fast!! Great job!!!
Christopher Powers
p.s. I haven't had a chance to play with it yet except importing, so this is just my early impression... However, browsing my 22,000 library while it added another 1,000 photos found...was still fast and thats incredible.

The only thing I have noticed is that a large portion of my OLDEST photos are damaged. I am very confident though that its NOT damaged from iPhoto 6 but was damaged somewhere along the lines of using older versions, transfering folders to hard drives and trying to clean out duplicates.
Just that's the only thing I've noticed. Everything that was 5 years or older seems to not load in an editor (or Photoshop).. I'm hoping there's a fix somewhere along the line but again, I think its not an iPhoto 6 problem but a problem I had before but never fully realized as iPhoto wasn't usable until now.

so, i'm trying to edit some photos in version 5.0.4 and iphoto has quit probably 30 times in the last 2 hrs. not only is it amazingly annoying, but it's not saving any of the changes that i do make before quitting.
any ideas of what the problem could be and/or ways to fix it?

    Post the Crash Log.
    It's at Home / Library / Logs / Crash-Reporter / iphoto.crash.log
Double click on the file and it will open in the Console. Copy and Paste it in here.

  • Many videos from iPhone that were in iPhoto no longer work and all have lost their thumbnails. It won't let me import videos at all now.

After installing Yosemite many of the videos I had in iPhoto won't play at all. All the videos (including missing ones) now have dashes around a thumbnail shape instead of the thumbnails that were there. When I click on the thumbnail shape of any of the ones it won't play it says "The operation couldn't be completed (OSStatus error -54.)"  These are videos that were there in Mavericks before I installed Yosemite and worked fine then.  Also now I am unable to import any videos from my iPhone or my desktop, even ones that it took before. It says the file is an unrecognized format.
What I want to know is - is this on purpose?  Did Apple suddenly withdraw all support for videos in iPhoto and in the process destroy the ones that were there or is something wrong with my system? Do other people see thumbnails and are able to play videos and import new ones in iPhoto in Yosemite? I wouldn't be surprised if something is wrong with my system since after upgrading to Yosemite ALL the thousands of carefully organized songs in my iTunes playlists were missing and I don't think that was on purpose but the fact that I can't import new videos makes me think this is on purpose.
If this is on purpose, if iPhoto on Yosemite is really no longer able to take videos what can I use instead?   In iPhoto my many videos were organized into folders and subfolders and sub-sub folders.  I can't do that in iTunes and also can't adjust thumbnail size in iTunes so videos take up way too much space there. Any suggestions on third party programs that will let me organize videos into folders and subfolders, etc and see thumbnails at small sizes?  I just need to be able to organize the videos and click them to play.

    THANK YOU!
I noticed this morning a lot of the thumbnails were back that weren't there last night.  It must have very slowly been bringing them back, but the videos that would not play at all were still not working and there were still quite a few without thumbnails.  I followed your suggestion and I'm amazed! That actually fixed everything!  Now all the thumbnails are back, the videos that wouldn't play at all now work fine, and iPhoto let me import the videos that it wouldn't last night .  I hope it stays like that but at least I know what to do if this happens again, if I dare to install any updates.
What does holding down the option key with launching the program do?  I might need to use this again or with other programs.

  • How Can I Share iPhoto Library/Keywords Among Multiple Users

Hi there! I am having a bit of a dilemma where I am trying how I can have several users access a shared iPhoto library (as well as retain their own personal iPhoto libraries). Basically, I have a handful of (three) users that need to be able to store/search against a common shared photo library - ideally, in iPhoto.
I understand that I can share albums through iPhoto (users are using a mix of iPhoto '08 and '09) on one account as long as iPhoto is running - a serious drawback. When I tried sharing photos via this method I was able to see the shared albums; however the keywords that were defined for those photos were not available. This presents two questions:
    1) Can iPhoto share its library among multiple users (including keywords, etc) so that if a user account (let's call it "media") shares out selected albums that the viewing users (user1 and user2) can search against the keywords in the host library? Or is this not possible with iPhoto?
    2) Is there another way of sharing photos that is more efficient and can be hosted on our private servers? The interface in iPhoto is amazing - and if there was an application that allowed for that same sort of feel/tagging we would be good to go...

Well here is the weird thing. If I was sharing out the library from my computer, I could search for the keywords (and obtain results) as expected. However, if I went to another computer that was viewing my shared library, searching by the same keyword did not return any results.

  • What's is the best way to use iPhoto? I need to understand.

What's is the best way to use iPhoto? I need to understand.
I guess the iPhoto is only for people with 5,000 of personal photos.
Or even 200,000, but they can't use this app everyday.
I'm not talk about working as a photographer. They use Aperture.
They may use iPhoto like a family album that you take a look sometimes.
And don't care about putting photos from the camera or from internet everyday.
I have tons of music and I love iTunes 8, works great. So I tried but I can't stand iPhoto anymore.
I have over 173,000 photos. My goal is organize, have total control, crop in Preview and delete them fast as I can.
The iPhoto is too slow. And is not only about performance, more RAM... but the whole concept.
Finder is much better/richer/flexible to organize than iPhoto.
I'm not talking about the photographer workflow.
And I'm not talking about editing and all these great photo features, the search, and all the iLife environment. They are amazing.
When I'm iPhoto, I feel like a prisioner.
I can't open an album/folder/event alone just to take a look, without do lanch the iPhoto app with the all thousand photos together. And it's slow.
I can't use Quick Look there.
So, I'll use Finder for manage/crop/etc. But what's the best way to use iPhoto in my case? Put the best/key ones there to use in iLife/MobileMe? To do a more serious editing? I like the features: keywords/ratings/hidden photos/events... It would be cool this features in Finder.
    For example:
iMovie: Manage movies? NO. It's editng only.
iTunes: Manage music/small video/podcast...? OK. Editing the song? OK for tags/convert/artwork/equalizer... For music there's a GarageBand of course.
iPhoto: Manage photos? Yes and No.
I think Finder would kill iPhoto incoporating all the editing features in Preview and the rich manage in Finder.
Jobs said that no one care about iDVD anymore. They care about the web.
Using iMovie to export to MobileMe.
Maybe iPhoto become less important in a near future. With a better Finder+Preview Right?
Sorry for this long text with a short question.
    Thanks.

Your post demonstrates exactly why I keep saying that iPhoto is not the application for you.
It would be better an iPhoto organizing photos by words like when iTunes browse his music.
Why on earth would anyone want to organise photos by words? A list mode is entirely pointless in a Photo application. That's like having an old photo album organised with the photos facing inwards so you can read the back of the picture.
Again, this is a characteristic of a File browser. You don't want a Photo organiser, you want a file organiser.
And, in iPhoto, you can search by tags, effortlessly in either the search box or by using a Smart Album.
iPhoto always loads all that events and all the thumbs library to scroll, and I think it's overkill.
So, how is iPhoto to know which ones you want to work with today? Open a library, get the Library.
Would be better a Cover Flow option to browsing in Events.
You've obviously never tried scrubbing along the Event icon.
Imagine iTunes using Cover Flow mode all the time. It won't be too useful.
Many, many people do, including myself on a library of 20k tracks totalling more that 100 gigs, and find it very useful. Same with the Finder.
And if when iTunes Store starts to sell photos?
Why on earth would the iTunes store start to sell photos?
    My photos are not junk,
I didn't say there were. Read my post again.
When I said Finder to crop photos I mean Preview. But I feel in Finder. Because what's in Preview? A photo opened with a Preview's menubar and some cocoa APIs like adjustments. Not?
Oh, so you don't count Preview as an application. Fine. It is an application but you don't feel it. As you wish.
My point to you is very simple: Because of the way you want to organise your pics - using lists views and so on - iPhoto is not the application for you. Don't use it. But you keep writing things about the application that are untrue, and I'm aware that other folks search these forums and I don't want them to have inaccurate information about iPhoto.

  • How do I move my old iPhoto library from my external hard drive to my new Mac?

    Hi guys!
I recently bought a new MacBook Air as my MacBook Pro was on its last legs... I have my backup for my old MacBook Pro on an external hard drive and I'm trying to put a selection of albums from my old iPhoto onto my new MacBook Air iPhoto. I can't simply click and drag it over as I get an error message "The iPhoto library is a Time Machine backup, and so cannot be used as the main library...". I've tried to reopen iPhoto while holding option and selecting my old iPhoto library from my external hard drive to open... AND I get the same message.
If anyone could help me out that would be amazing!
FYI: The hard drive I am using is a G|Drive mobile with Thunderbolt 1 TB.
Thank you very much in advance!
    Cheers,
    Kendall

I may sound like a real rookie here, but on my new MacBook Air there isn't a "Pictures" folder under "Users/kendallwilson" like there used to be on my old MacBook Pro (Early 2011). I'm still working out the new software on my MB Air, so where exactly should I open this new window to start following the steps you just provided me.
    Thanks again!

  • I just downloaded iphoto from the app store and now it tells me I have an update but it tells me I need to sign on to the user name I used when I purchased the upgrade. I am in the correct username. Whats wrong?

I just downloaded iPhoto upgrade for my Macbook. I just bought Lion and wanted to upgrade my iLife suite. I downloaded this and it works great. I looked the other day at the App Store and saw it said upgrade beside iPhoto. I clicked it and it told me to sign in as the username I bought the upgrade from. I am in the correct log in.
Also I have Lion and it is amazing but it says download beside it. I have Lion and I don't need to download it again. I click it and it reinstalls it to my computer just to tell me that it cannot be installed. Whats up with these situations?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities,
I had a similar issue and it was an easy fix for me. First you need to log out of your account completely in the Mac App Store. Quit the application. Re-open the Mac App Store. Click log-in, enter your Apple-ID and password. Now when the screen pops-up that has all of your billing/credit card information on it DO NOT select done. Instead select View my Account, then select View hidden purchases. There you should be able to find iPhoto. Hope this helps if not let me know. I'm still searching solutions for you.

  • When I try to print a picture from iPhoto, all of the detail is not shown...any ideas?

So I design a nice card in iPhoto, and then I try to print it - all of the design disappears and only the text is visible.
To view the full card design do I have to purchase the card and have it delivered?

Tried. If I directly print, or save as a PDF, the design is either:
    a) lost
    b) replaced with the design of another card
    c) just goes blank
I've had this problem ever since updating to the most amazing operating system in the world (Lion...) ahem...
All of the Lion computers at my university also have this same issue...I have no idea how to remedy it.

  • Annoyed by iPhoto's lack of event folders

    Hey Everyone,
Typical Apple......some things are absolutely amazing, some things are absolutely stupid.
    Love iPhoto. Hate iPhoto.
I love the concept of Events, I hate how rigid they are.
I want to make ONE event entitled "Summer Vacation" that encompasses several days, locations, and activities. When I click that event, I want several "sub" events that appear that separate my photo collections logically under the hood of one experience.
Is it a practical method of organization? Absolutely. Is it possible in iPhoto? From what I have attempted and researched, NO!
I can sub-categorize my music collection beautifully in iTunes and access it in any capacity using the browser view. Why can't iPhoto be built the same consistent way?
How hard is it to offer 3 methods of view: 1. All Events 2. All Photos 3. Event Folders (aka Smart Events, Event Playlists, Whatever)
I don't want workarounds, title tricks, album massage, etc. I want simple old fashioned quick and easy drag and drop. X number of related Events into one with the entities sub categorized and preserved.
So simple. Somebody PLEASE tell me this is possible and make me an idiot, I will wear the title with pride.

You can do what you want with the virtual folders that can be created in the left hand pane. Virtual folders can contain albums, smart albums, books, slideshows and other virtual folders like this. The smart albums can be configured to span a specific time line or any other criteria of the photos. You can also use keywords or multiple keywords assigned to a photos to help with your organization.
That's what you'll have to use if you're going to use iPhoto. It's the nature of the beast. if you want to maintain your own, hierarchical folder structure and have that represented in the image management tool you're using you'll need to use something link iView MediaPro which is now Expression Media.
    Happy Holidays
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • IPhoto, not found in Applications/ new X install

    Currently 10.4.11,
and all related updates completed last night, except for iTunes 9xx. I'll wait.
I just ripped the drive clean on my old Powerbook G4 15" 1.6 2Gb last night.
I have no plans to go further than 10.4.11.
These older PowerBooks seem to work great at this limit.
Reloaded OS X Tiger from DVD, which was the upgrade to original OS9 when it was released.
I have the 2 original discs of OS9 when I purchased machine new in Feb 05.
Amazingly its still the same Hard Drive. No PC's in my circle made it this far.
    The OS9 discs,
one is the Install Disc, and the other is the PowerBook G4 OSX Install Disc.
I have to assume iPhoto is on one of those. But maybe not the preferred way.
I did not use these OS9 discs last night, just the Tiger disc.
Laptop drive was cloned to external OWC Mercury drive using
CCC, Carbon Copy Cloner before wiping drive clean. That was a good find.
Should I just go to external drive to bring back what's missing?
Is it just drag & drop, as in grab application from external & simply drop in Application folder?
    Any dangers to watch for?
After he was up and running, I put Tiger disc back in and did the Permissions Repair.
He listed several issues as usual even at this state.
I'll have to bring in iTunes files, & that may have to be a thread on it's own.
Not sure how to handle these delicate issues to make it painless.
With only 85GB left on internal drive after all updates, I want to be a little fussy what comes back.
I was down to only 6GB left when I decided this last night.
iDisc did a nice job bringing in the Bookmarks and iCal settings.
But I'm a little worried of iPhoto, & Aperture 2 of how to handle this.
I didn't have these on iDisc. Probably a to-do in the future.
I'll have to look to see what I had for iLife, & possibly 08 is on external there.
    As example/
Not sure if just grabbing Aperture Library from external is the way to do this.
Maybe just set it aside on Desktop until Application is loaded?
Just hope when done, the Referenced files find there way in.
And can Applications from external be enough to bring over? w/o using the application's disc.
I think I entered into unknown territory here just thinking about it.
Thanks' for tips of process. I do have MacPro handy if this guy has crisis.
To get this far, one should really have a pilots license vs learn by mistake, & no parachute.
    Cheers

I don't have a MacPro but here's a screenshot of where the iApps are located on the disks that came with my Macs:

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. • Photos published to iWeb '08 from iPhoto as a gallery not showing up

Last night, from my home computer, after installing iLife 08, I made 2 new webpages using the new photo gallery feature from iPhoto.
It seemed too good to be true. It published pretty quick considering that there were 20+ 2.3mb photos. it seemed to work great. I viewed the newly published webpages. It was amazing, the photos were sized down, thumbnailed and loaded so fast.
Gave myself a hi-five, turned computer off and went to bed.
This morning, while at work, i cannot see the photos on these two, new pages. Surely my home computer does not have to be online in order for these photos to be viewable??
Here are the two web pages in question:

  • IPhoto vs Aperture uploaded image quality to Mobile Me

I realize this may have been discussed, but by my tests the exact same album loaded up to Mobile Me gallery via iPhoto looks better than Aperture...how can this be? I searched for topics about image quality and Mobile Me and found many complaints but little in the way of solutions. While, for me, this seems to be a solution, it is sad that my "pro" app is doing a worse job than a "consumer" app, not to mention the additional importing needed to use iPhoto. And this is v7.1.5 of iPhoto. Anyone have any other solutions for image quality involving Aperture and Mobile Me galleries? Thanks.

So the album finished uploading and the difference is amazing! I was very hesitant to send a link to my client after Aperture had uploaded the album...the images were that soft. But the iPhoto, while still a touch soft look 10X's better. Same album...just different programs used to upload to Mobile Me gallery. I'm not sure what is going on with Aperture, but Apple really needs to figure it out.

  • HT4906 Iphoto not able to link with icloud- more $$

So is this just another revenue stream for apple- I have to pay for a new Iphoto download - no update showing. Is that correct?

I have to pay for a new Iphoto download - no update showing. Is that correct?
No idea - totally depends on details you do not give
If you do not meet the minimum requirements then you can not use the feature - just like the rest of life - if you are not this tall you can not get on the Disneyland ride  --  requirements and setup instructions are here - http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/
So is this just another revenue stream for appleof course - exactly like the new Ford is another revenue stream for Ford, etc, etc, etc, etc - the reason Apple hires people and pays them to implement new features is to create moe revenue - amazed that you did not know that (same for Microsoft, Adobe, and Ace Hardware - and your local hamburger stand)
What eactly did you think the purpose of new features was?

  • How touse an external NAS to hold your iPhoto library?

Hi, I'm new to Mac. I want to start using iPhoto which seems to be amazing.
Problem: I have a NAS hooked up to my wireless network at home. Both my wife and I always download our camera's photos to the NAS so they are safe and easy to find from our different computers, media players, etc. I have several hundred GB's of photos and don't want to import them all to my new MacBookPro' hard disk. I want to keep them on the NAS.
Question: Can I configure iPhoto so that it keeps it's iPhoto Library on my NAS instead of on my local hard drive on my laptop? I used to do this whith iTunes when I used iTunes on a PC so I'm guessing there is some kind of similar solution.
THANKS for your help and time!!!
    Regards,
    Willem

Can I configure iPhoto so that it keeps it's iPhoto Library on my NAS instead of on my local hard drive on my laptop?
No. iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos.
Options: and these are less than ideal
You can run a Referenced Library when the Library is on the Hard Drive of your Mac but the photos are stored on the NAS. I strongly recommend that you don't do that. This discussion will explain the pitfalls of such an arrangement:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3062728?tstart=0
You can put the Library on a Disk Image formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)  and store that on the NAS. But you'll need to mount the Disk Image ech time you use the Library.
    More things to consider:
A strong warning: If you're trying to edit the Library (that is, make albums, move photos around, keyword, make books or slideshows etc.) or edit individual photos in it via Wireless be very careful. Dropouts are a common fact of wireless networking, and should one occur while the app is writing to the database then your Library will be damaged. Simply, I would not do this with my Libraries.
At heart, iPhoto is a $15 app aimed at the guy with a Mac and a camera. He takes snaps of the kids an dsends them to Grandma. He takes snaps on holidays. The app has no cross platform ability, and while sharing with other iPhoto users is possible, it's limited or risky.
