IPhoto and Adobe software

In the past I have cautioned photographers who will be using Adobe Photoshop not to acquire images via iPhoto because those images were not directly available to other software. e.g. when people open an image from within iPhoto into Photoshop Elements and process the image, the saved photoshop document could not be stored in a folder with its original image.
Has this changed with new versions of iPhoto?  e.g. If someone uses the iPhoto downloader, are the images stored in a disignated spot on the hard drive where other software can directly access the images?
This is an important question as I teach Photoshop Elements or Photoshop CS to digital photographers.
Has Apple made iPhoto less proprietary?
Thanks for your input.

This might be of interest to you:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.  3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 9 the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
NOTE: If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window".  That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu).  This way you get the best of both worlds.

  • File permissions and Adobe Software

We have a problem with file permissions and adobe software. In Illustrator and Photoshop I can open files from the 10.4.7-server that are opened by another user at the same time and in Indesign, in the contrary, I cannot open any file on the server. Always error "no rights" or "is opened by another user", also if logged in as admin.
In MS Word for Mac we have no problem, if a file is open (Word) and I try to open the same file on another workstation, error "is open" is showed correctly. We have 3 10.4.7-Workstations and a 10.4.7-server on a G4/800. Can anyone help?

Assuming you're connecting via AFP, this may help:
    1. Start with current updates: Update your client and server software to version 10.4.8. Update Photoshop CS2 to 9.0.2, Illustrator CS2 to 12.0.1, and InDesign CS2 to 4.0.4.
    2. In Illustrator and Photoshop I can open files from the 10.4.7-server that are opened by another user at the same time.
This is actually not normal. Instruct your users to avoid opening files simultaneously, as this will result in lost data.
If you have SMB/CIFS access to the same share point, disable oplocks; allow only strict file locks.
If you've disabled the lock manager for AFP, re-enable it. It's enabled by default in /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleFileServer.plist.
    3. For InDesign documents that won't open, delete their corresponding lock files. Whenever InDesign CS or CS2 opens an .indd or .inx file, it creates a corresponding .idlk file that simply serves to flag the .indd/.inx file as open. If File.indd won't open, locate and delete File.idlk and try again. The lock file will be stored in the same folder as the document.
    4. Double-check your file permissions. Start by verifying the filesystems (Disk Utility/First Aid tab/Repair Volume button) of the server volume that houses the affected share point(s). You'll have to disable sharing to do so.
Ensure that your permissions are correct, and adjust them as necessary. Consider using an ACL to apply read/write access for users or groups, because ACLs offer the superior inheritance model. See my ACL Tips post (http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=1732788) if you haven't already.

  • IPhoto and Adobe photoshop elements 4.0

I recently downloaded adobe so that I could do more editing with my photos then iPhoto would allow. However, now I don't have access to my photos so that I can put them in slide shows with iHD or iDVD. They don't show up in iPhoto and I can't get them to import into iPhoto from Adobe. What do I need to do to fix this problem?

To expand on Terence's post a bit, if you use PSE as your editor of choice in iPhoto via iPhoto's preferences and edit a file it may be changed to a psd file during the Save process. You'll be presented with the navigation save window in PS. If that occurs you can take one of two routes:
1 - navigate to the Desktop and save the psd file as a new file and then import it into iPhoto.
2 - cancel the save, to to the Layers pane and flatten the image. Then save as a jpg. You'll get the smaller save window where you select the quality of the jpg and the type of format, Baseline, Baseline Optimized or Progressive) You'll want to choose Baseline. If you select this type of save the edited version will be saved in the Modified folder and the thumbnail will be updated as it should.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • IPhoto and Adobe Bridge Workflow

I finally picked up Photoshop CS3 and am curious as to the best method of integrating the applications in the most effective manner.
I do like iPhoto, and I've used it extensively for some time now, but I wonder if it's better suited as simply a program to show and share my completed photos.
Would it be best to use Bridge to organize and work with the photos directly out of my camera (including RAW files) and then merely use iPhoto as the last means of displaying them?
It should be noted that the only Adobe application I use is Photoshop, so there is no need for thorough integration with other Adobe products.
I suppose I'm curious as to how people might make use of Photoshop, Bridge and iPhoto in the most useful way possible.
    Thanks in advance.

  • How do iPhoto and Adobe Elements Organizer compare?

I just installed Photoshop Elements 13 and am curious how others compare iPhoto 11 and Adobe Elements Organizer 13 compare.

To use PSE 13 as the external editor in iPhoto be sure to select the correct file when selecting PSE from iPhoto's Advanced preference pane.  It should be the Photoshop Elements Editor.app and not the Adobe Elements 13 Organizer.app.  With PSE 10 the editor app was located in the Support Files folder.
With iPhoto 9 if you edit a photo with PSE and do just a Save (i.e. no layers and you're saving as jpeg) iPhoto will recognize the edit, change the thumbnail accordingly. You can do further edits with PSE on that photo or do a Revert to Original on it to get back to the original file.
However, that edited version can't be edited with iPhoto without duplicating the edited  file in iPhoto and then editing the duplicate.   This message comes up:

  • IMac (OS X 10.9.3) and Adobe Software Inquiry

    Hi,
I just got a new iMac (OS X 10.9.3) and I need to install Adobe Software in it but I'm not sure if it will work on the latest update.
Can anyone confirm if the Adobe software works on this OS? And by "anyone" I mean people who actually use Adobe with OS X 10.9.3.
If it works fine, which Adobe software should I buy? CC? CS6?
    Thank you!

I'm using the CC 2014 releases now - yet CS5 and CS6 should work just fine (if you can find them for sale any longer - maybe Adobe is still selling CS6? I'm not sure... I sold out to Creative Cloud when they first got it up and running).

  • IBook G4 and Adobe software

I am considering buying a 12" iBook G4. I want to use it with Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Design, and Adobe Illustrator (and professional resolution photograph files). I would like to know if a 12" iBook G4 would work well with these programs, or if I should get a more powerful laptop. If I do buy the iBook, how much RAM would I need? Any other helpful hints would be appreciated.

Thank you for your (extremely prompt) response. I noticed that you have a 17" PowerBook G4, not the lower-priced 12" iBook G4 that I'm interested in buying. If price is any indication ($2499 for your model as opposed to $999 for the model I'm looking at), there is quite a bit of difference between these two machines. For example, the 17" PowerBook has a 1.67 GHz processor, while the 12" iBook has only 1.33 GHz. Can you (or anyone else) tell me about the 12" iBook G4's compatibility with the Adobe creative suite?

  • IPhoto And Adobe Bridge

My Photoshop came with a program called bridge and it is supposed to be a veiwer from which you select images to edit. My problem is that while I can see iPhoto in the Bridge application when i select it instead of showing thumbnails it opens iPhoto. I have made Photoshop Elements the default editor so i can work around this but it is annoying. Any ideas?

    GiffS
Bridge is a photo organiser, iPhoto is one. They don't work happily together, using Bridge is a common cause of database corruption seen on here.
Select one or the other to work with.

  • Adobe Captivate Help | Drag-and-drop interaction (for subscription and Adobe Software Assurance customers only)

This question was posted in response to the following article: http://helpx.adobe.com/captivate/using/drag-and-drop-interaction.html

Yep.  But it will only likely get to you in the next version released for NON subscription or ASA customers.  With 6.1 Adobe was giving a preview of the functionality they would be including in your next release.  Either way, whether you upgraded to the subscription edition or waited for the next paid upgrade, you were always going to be paying something to get this new functionality.  6.1 users just got it earlier than everyone else.  That was Adobe's decision.  It certainly hasn't been a popular one.

I have just a "regular" copy of Captivate CS6 Mac version running OS 10.7.5 bought the box so it isn't a subscription. I'm trying to record a video that has an audio track with it I tried using "record new software simulation" as shown by by Dr. Allen Partridge above. In this video he has an option in his audio preferences that I do not have, namely the check box "system audio". Is this wonderful option ONLY for subscriptions or ASA's? If so WHY? If not what do I need to do in order to record the video WITH the audio?

  • How to download iphoto and other software for other macs from the liscensed version from a new mac

I purchased a macbook pro in Dec 2011 and was told I could download software from app store (ilife, OSX, etc) for up to two other macs based on the software liscense agreement. Can anybody tell me where to find instructions on how to do this? Thanks. TJW

You need to have accepted the iLife suit into your Mac App Store account from the Mac App Store app on your new Mac. Then you should be able to open the Mac App Store on the other Macs with at least Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.6 and download the apps after signing into your account.
There is not a two Mac limit. You are able to download your Mac App Store apps on every Mac that you own or have in your control, which would include Macs issued to you by your emplyer or an educational institution.

  • IPhoto and Adobe Elements 8

    Hi,
I want to migrate my Elements 8 (Windows XP)databas to iPhoto.
Is that possible? Without new indexing (24000 Photos).
    THX for respons.
    Michael

I'm not sure what you mean by "Without new indexing" but you can write your keywords and other metadata to the files in Elements and they will be picked up in iPhoto. How other things come over - Folders or images and so on, really depends on how you have things currently organised in Elements. For instance, if you have a folder system this can be copied over quite easily. However, if the system is +date based+ then smart albums and the calendar tool make that form of organisation pretty pointless in iPhoto. So, more details will get you bette rhelp.
