IPhoto and Aperture won't open
Dear all,
Since a couple of days I've got a huge problem with iPhoto.
Last weak it worked without any issues, but when I installed iDVD to help a friend to create a dvd..I guess iPhoto somehow crashed.
I've tried to reinstall iPhoto but I constantly get the same error.
I get this message while opening iPhoto:
But I've already got the latest updates installed:
Then I tried to install the latest Aperture, because I wanted to try to import the iPhoto library to Aperture in order to save my nicely organised 50 gigabytes (medatada, places, faces, albums e.d.) of photo's.
But unfortunatly:
I know I can right click the library and copy the masters folder when I choose show package contents, but then I loose all my medadata and clean organisation that I've worked on for a really long time... it's a 50GB library, that's a lot of pictures and I the system and folder structure that the master folder has is very very poor.
Is there any iPhoto guru that can help me with this problem?
Would be greatly appriciated.
1. What exact version of iPhoto do you have? If you've just re-installed from disk then
Go to
http://support.apple.com/downloads/
Find and download the 9.1 updater. Run it. Then Run Software update again.
2. You know that there's no need to import the library to Aperture now, just open it with Aperture.
Regards

Updated to Yosemite, no problem. now iPhoto and iMovie won't open. Says I need to update software however, when i try to update indicates my User ID and PW won't work for these two pieces of software. User ID and PW works everywhere else.
I am having the same problem. I even changed my password and updated all of my security information. Now it just gives me an error and retry message, which of course also does not work. Went to support and was going to open a chat (seemed the simpler option) and received a message that my support has expired for this serial number unless I want to pay $29.00. So I chose the option to call later, which was the exact time suck I was trying to avoid. Why wouldn't the new operating system also update the apps that were already part of my old platform?

IPhoto and iDVD won't open after I reinstalled iLife '08
I was unhappy with iMovie '08, so I tried to load an older version from my iLife '05. However, it copied over all of my iLife '08 apps. I was hoping it would give me the option of just installing the iMovie app. Everything opened except for iPhoto and iDVD. I then reinstalled iLife '08, to try and fix the problem, from the bundled software that came with the computer. But still, iPhoto and iDVD don't open. Here's what iPhoto report says...

Can anyone help?
Thanks.delete all of your iLife applications and your iLife receipts - do not do anything with your iPhoto library
Install iLife '08 and go to the Apple downloads page and download iPhoto 06 (a free download for iLife '08 owners) and install it and you will have the best of both worlds iLife '08 and iMovie 06

I have a library (Library6.iPhoto) and it won't open...
I tried to open it and it said I needed to update my iphoto, which then led me to updating my operating system. I still cannot open the library. HELP!
I tried to hold the command and option keys down while opening the library, and it brought me to the repair window. I get asked if I would like to import the photos into iphoto, but then they are still not there. I have tried to use iphoto library manager, but it doesn't recognize the library. I hate that one day I can open my photos fine and then the next day they are all of a sudden corrupted.
Please Help me!Library6.iPhoto is a file that's located inside your iPhoto library Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and select your library in the window that comes up:
Do you get the same results? If so then apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with
Option #4 followed by #1 as needed.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
Now if you're still getting that Do you want to import photos message open the iPhoto Library with the Finder as shown in this screenshot:
Look for a folder titled "Import" or "Importing'. If there is one move it to the Desktop. If there is no folder named as such look inside the Auto Import folder and move the contents to the Desktop. DO NOT MAKE ANY OTHER CHANGES TO THE CONTENTS OF THE IPHOTO LIBRARY.
Launch iPhoto and the message should be gone. Check the contents of the folder you moved to the library to see if any of those photos are ones you want to keep and import. Otherwise delete them from the Desktop.

Firefox, Microsoft word, iPhoto, and more won't open.
Basically, everything except Safari and Photo Booth continuously refuse to open. I click on them, the icon bounces for a good minute or so, and then I get a pop-up window saying it closed unexpectedly. I don't know if this helps, but here's the detailed information...

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling firefox four times. After the last uninstall, I didn't even reinstall it. Safari is extremely slow on my computer, and YouTube refuses to work, as well. What should I do?Welcome to Apple Discussions!
The first thing to try is to repair your hard drive. Boot from your install disc, choose your language, and then navigate to Disk Utility from the menu bar. Go to the First Aid tab and select your hard drive and then "Repair Disk". Repair it until there is nothing left to repair.
When done, you might want to update your software if you are still running 10.6.3--I believe that 10.6.5 is out now.
Good luck! -
IPhoto asks for an upgrade of Aperture and otherwise won't open
After upgrade to Maverick, iPhoto asks for an upgrade of Aperture (which I don't have and never had), and otherwise won't open. If I click "ok", the Applications store opens and asks me to BUY Aperture (69,99 EUR).
There must be a bug in iPhoto 11 after the upgrade to Maverick..?I can only guess at a couple of solutions:
#1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion and Mt. Lion delete the contents the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If you're running Mavericks, 10.9, go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
where you can check the Show Library Folder checkbox.
#2
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database, followed by Option #1 if needed. -
afyer updating to yosemite aperture, pages, numbers and keynote won't open
i have tried updating them via app store only be told they aren't authorised on this account, they were bought and installed with this mac and there has never been a problem updating before so why now?
this is the fourth time i have had to type this question out. what a terrible lay out for a support section!this is the fourth time i have had to type this question out. what a terrible lay out for a support section!
You aren't likely to get an answer with that type of attitude. BTW, you are not contacting Apple on these forums. We are all volunteer end users just like you. If you want support, then call AppleCare and you can get one-on-one assistance. -
Cannot open apps iPhoto and Aperture after updates
Cannot open apps iPhoto and Aperture after updates. I'm operating ML on mbpro. Now apps will not open. Simply that.
Not simple, if as ML implies you are running Mountain Lion! If you only mean Lion, then it would be useful for you to open another User Account, and as that User test to see if either app will launch?

The simplest solution is to download and install the OS X Lion Update 10.7.3 (Client Combo)
You can do that over your current system without causing a problem but of course whenever you're doing maintenance work like this is it always a good idea to have a current working backup of the system just in case. -

Print quality difference between iphoto and aperture...?
when ordering books, is there a print quality difference between using iPhoto and Aperture? or are they sent to the same lab?
it's possible i may have some setting wrong, but when i order a book using iphoto, i never really feel the quality is that great. it's good, i just feel it could be a lot better. the print quality sort of reminds me of newsprint, albeit high quality newsprint. similar sized prints made at home on my basic 3-in-1 printer look better.
thanks...Previews are what you view on your display. When you import a photo into Aperture (and I'm pretty sure iPhoto as well), your computer automatically generates a preview for quick viewing. The original images are stored in your library, but it is the preview that you see.
In Aperture, you are able to set the size and quality of these previews. When sharing photos between Aperture and iPhoto, the process is as follows:
Let's say that your images are stored in Aperture, but you also want to be able to view them in iPhoto without taking up too much room on your hard drive. Essentially, if you were to import the originals into iPhoto as well, you would be storing two exact, yet separate copies of the same image on your hard drive. As you are aware, with large images (whether JPEG's, and especially RAW) this would put quite a tax on your storage capacity after not too long.
So, you have your images in one or the other (in this case Aperture), but you want to play around with them in iPhoto. What you can do, is open iPhoto, go to the File menu and then select, Show Aperture Library. This will open a window with all of the contents of your Aperture Library. You can then drag any images you want into iPhoto . The only thing is, you are not dragging the original JPEG's, but rather, the previews of those images. If you have those previews set to a lower quality (again for capacity concerns), you will only have lower quality and lower detailed images in iPhoto. These images might not be ideal, or even suitable for printing high quality prints. The previews that you generate in Aperture though can be adjusted to be extremely high quality with no size limits.
My thinking was that since you mentioned Aperture, it sounded like you had experience with working with it and with ordering a photo book through Aperture. I guess you were saying that you ordered via iPhoto, weren't happy with the quality and were wondering if Aperture created books were better.
Anyway, if this is the case, I cannot answer that for you. I have never ordered a book through Aperture. If the quality of your images is good, you should be able to get a decent product no matter where you order it from. There is not doubt that the materials used and the print shop that does the work makes a difference, but if your images are good, you should still get a decent product through iPhoto. Perhaps iPhoto isn't the way to go though if you have had poor experiences with them.
If you haven't used Aperture yet, I would highly recommend it though aside from the photo book aspect of this thread. It is a stellar product.
I hope this helps.

Safari, iMail, iTunes, and Dashboard won't open
A week ago, Safari, iMail, iTunes, and Dashboard won't open but other applications will, like Mozilla, iPhoto, Word, Excel, etc. Does anyone have any ideas of how I can get Safari and the other programs to open? Thanks for any help you can offer.
Hi, I'm replying to myself to add more information on my case. I wasted half my day yesterday trying to fix this, looking into forums and trying to talk to people about it and there it absolutely no answer. Yesterday I installed the programs necessary to sync my phone in my wife's macbook and nothing bad happened. So I'm guessing it isn't about the phone plugins I installed. I've tried to download combo updates but they crash as soon as I try to install them - I even tried to install a 10.4.10 update.
This is the error message I get:

I put part of in on google to check if there was anybody discussing anything related and someone suggested - bizarrely enough - updating adobe reader. I did it just in case and, of course, it didn't work. I repaired permissions a million times already, I rebooted in safe mode, I scaned the computer with apple jack, I verified the disk with diskutility - which showed nothing. I tried downloading an anti-virus (ClamXav), but I couldn't open it also, I trashed my prefs, I deleted all internet plugins, but still.... nothing. I'm about to quit and take it to the very expensive - yet reliable - authorized tech support apple has in Rio. Any ideas, anyone? -
Hey there, Apple Support Communities.
To start, I'm working on a MBP Retina 15" with a 2.3GHz i7 processor and 16 GB of RAM. 10GB free on a 256GB SS HD. Attached are two external HDs - one 1TB Western Digital portable drive from 2011, one 2TB Porsche LaCie non-portable drive from 2013; both connected via USB. All photo libraries in question are on the external drives.
I have Aperture 3.5.1 and iPhoto 9.5.1. I prefer to work in Aperture.
The Issue(s)
Over the years, I have accumulated a number of iPhoto libraries and Aperture libraries. At one point, I thought my WD drive was dying so I purchased the LaCie and copied all libraries over the the LaCie drive. (Turns out, there's probably an issue with my USB port reading drives, because I can once again see the WD drive and occasionally I can't see the LaCie drive.)
So now I have old version of some libraries on the WD drive, and new versions on the LaCie drive.
When I was moving things, I ran the software Gemini to de-dupe my iPhoto libraries. Not sure what effect that may have had on my issues.
In my main Aperture library and in some iPhoto libraries, I get the image-not-found badge or exclamation point. I've dug through the hidden Masters folders in various libraries to find the original image. In some cases, I have been able to find the original image, sometimes in a different version of the iPhoto library.
My Question(s)
1. For Aperture libraries that have missing originals, is there some magical way to find them, or have they just disappeared into the oblivion?
2. For iPhoto libraries that have missing originals and I have found the original in another iPhoto library, what is the best way to proceed?
3. Are there quirks to merging iPhoto and Aperture libraries (by using the Import->Library) feature that I should be aware of?
TL;DR: Too many iPhoto and Aperture libraries, and not all the original pictures can be found by the libraries anymore, though some originals still do exist in other libraries. Steps/process to fix?
Thank you! Let me know if you need add'l info to offer advice.
With appreciation,
ChristieThat will not be an easy task, Christie.
I am afraid, your cleaning session with Gemini may have actually removed originals. I have never used this duplicate finder tool, but other posters here reported problems. Gemini seems to replace duplicate original files in photo libraries by links, and this way, deleting images can cause the references for other images to break. And Aperture does not follow symbolic links - at least, I could never get it to find original files this way, when I experimented with this.
1. For Aperture libraries that have missing originals, is there some magical way to find them, or have they just disappeared into the oblivion?
You have to find the originals yourself. If you can find them or restore them from a backup, Aperture can reconnect them. The reconnect panel can show you, where the originals are supposed to be, so youcan see the filename and make a Spotlight search.
For iPhoto libraries that have missing originals and I have found the original in another iPhoto library, what is the best way to proceed?
Make a copy of the missing original you found in a folder outside the iPhoto library. You can either open the iPhoto library in Aperture and use "File > Locate Referenced file" to reconnect the originals, or simply reimport them. Then Lift&Stamp all adjustments and metadata to the reimported version.
See this manual page on how to reconnect originals: Aperture 3 User Manual: Working with Referenced Images (the paragraph: Reconnecting Missing or Offline Referenced Images)
Are there quirks to merging iPhoto and Aperture libraries (by using the Import->Library) feature that I should be aware of?
References images will stay referenced, managed will remain managed. You need to unhide all hidden photos in iPhoto - this cannot be done in Aperture.
and not all the original pictures can be found by the libraries anymore, though some originals still do exist in other libraries. Steps/process to fix?
That is probably due to Gemini's replacing duplicate originals by links, and your best cause of action is to fix this before merging the libraries. Reconnecting can be done for your iPhoto libraries in Aperture. -
How can I make a backup to an external hard drive from iPhoto if it won't open?
how can I make a backup to an external hard drive from iPhoto if it won't open? I just wan't to make a backup to my pictures not my entire computer so how does Time Machine work on that?
you could also clone the drive or volume, or just some of the user folders. look for carbon copy cloner, then enable the "use checksum to insure file integrity."
you can have multiple iPhoto Library catalogues in different locations.
Continue to use TimeMachine and make sure it has 350% or more capacity than your system and data. -
I just downloaded the OS X Lion mountain and Mail won't open. I get an error message everytime I try to open the app.How can I fix that?
I-Photo won't open even though I have upgraded to OS X Yosemite and downloaded the I-Photo upgrader.
But have you run the the iPhoto Library upgrader? It is installed in Applications > Utilities. Launch it and direct it to your iPhoto library.
Which version of iPhoto did you upgrade from?
The upgrader is only necessary, if you have been running iPhoto7.1.2 or earlier.
