Iphoto and back up issues

Can you help please.
I have a MBPro and am looking to move my iphoto library from the MBP to a 1 ter bite Mypassport external HD.  I have time machine running from a seperate external HD so this one is merely used to hold everything, freeing up the MBP memory.
Firstly, what is the best way of moving the 12000 photos from the MBP to the external HD and then finally when I delete all of the photos from the MBP memory will that effect the events I have set up as most of my 12000 photos are grouped into events rather than albums and obvioulsy dont want to loose any of them whilst moving and deleting.
Thanks for your help in advance.

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

    how can i reinstall iPhoto and iMovie on my macbook air (if they are not shown on the purchases collumn in the app store)

    Please try each of the following steps you haven't already taken, until the issue is resolved. After each step, relaunch the App Store and try again.
    1. Follow the instructions in the Apple Support article linked below:
    Mac App Store: Cannot update App Store purchases or updates do not seem available
    2. If any App Store purchases were made under a different Apple ID, or if the bundled iLife applications were accepted under a different ID, sign in to the App Store with that ID to update.
    3. Alternatively, delete the probem applications and re-download them with the ID you're using now. If you haven't already purchased them with that ID, you'll have to do that first, because purchases can't be transferred from one account to another.
    4. Select the Purchased tab in the App Store window. If you see an item in the list marked "You have 3 apps to accept," click Accept.
    5. Triple-click the line below to select it:
    /Library/Caches/com.apple.appstore/adoption.plist
    Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
    from the contextual menu. A Finder window may open with a file selected. If it does, delete the selected file. You may be prompted for your login password.
    Then repeat step 4.
    6. Select
    Store ▹ View My Account
    from the App Store menu bar, then select View hidden purchases. If you're trying to update any hidden purchases, unhide them.
    7. Launch iTunes and select
    Store ▹ Authorize This Computer
    from the menu bar.
    8. If you've moved any App Store apps out of the applications folder, or into a subfolder, put them back. Never move or copy those applications.

  • I recently uploaded some pics and videos from an ipad and a camera. I put them all on Iphoto and backed them up in my personal folder. I then trimmed one of the videos and dragged and dropped that into the master folder(pictures). Its now gone!! HELP!?!?!

    I rencently added all my photo's from my Ipad and Camera. There were photos and videos on both. The import was done through Iphoto and then transfered to my backup in my pictures folder. I then took one of my videos and trimmed it and then addded that trimmed version to my back up(pictures)albumn. It asked If i wanted to replace existing photo or cancel and I hit replace. Now the file plays great on Iphoto but I am unable to share it through any form(facebook, Imessage etc) and in my back up(pictures) it says the file in only 87kb. I dragged and dropped it from Iphoto to the desk top along with another important video, when I hit get info on both of them one of them is a full sized video(50mb or whatever) and the other one(the one I am trying to recover) is only the 87kb. I want this full file avaiable to me how can I get it back?? it is already deleted off the camera??? please please help me.

    Garret,
    is your movie in your backup folder a Quicktime movie? Then probably only have the Quicktime wrapper in your backup folder, but not the referenced media in the file fork of the movie. If you see the full quality movie in iPhoto in QuickTime player, don't drag it from the browser to the Desktop, but use "File > Reveal in Finder > Original File" to show the movie in your iPhoto Library. Select the Movie when it is revealed and ctrl-click it to open it in Quicktime Player.
    Export it from Quicktime Player with "Export to" and share it to iTunes. This way it will be converted to a .mp4 movie that embeds the missing resources.
    You can drag the converted movie from iTunes to the Desktop or share it using to Media Browser to other applications.

  • Help with iPhoto and back up

    Hi
    Can someone help me... In order to create more space on the HD of my 2007 iMac (500gb) i copied the iPhoto library to my external HD (La Cie) and then put original in the trash wit a mind to delete it and only boot iPhoto from the Lacie. After consultation on this site i realised this was a mistake as i should do that with a completely separate HD not the one I use Time Machine on! So I've put the orginal iPhoto library back in the pictures folder and it works fine when i select it BUT its now called an iPhoto PACKAGE with a folder as an Icon NOT iPhoto library with the flower icon. Does this matter or should I now delete this package and copy the original back from the LaCie which IS still called a library with the little flower icon... Sorry this is so long winded but I need to give you all the info.
    Thank you for your help.

    Hi Yes it does all is normal with it and no lost images. Just the iPhoto icon has been replaced with a Package folder since being taken back out of the trash.
    Thank you

  • I am experiencing very slow import and backing up issues.

    I am experiencing very slow import and backing up catalog on exiting Lightroom. This is a very recent issue. I use RAW files.

    The type of files you are importing will have an effect on the speed of the import process. Larger files, like raw sensor files, are normally much larger than JPG files.
    But if this is something new, the slowness, and you are using the same camera with the same size files as previously then it's not just the file size.
    What type of computer and what operating system are you using.

  • IPhoto and Address Book issues

    I went to Finder window to locate a picture in iPhoto. I noticed in the iPhoto library files labelled as e.g.Thumb32Segment.data etc (they are all Segment.data files). When I opened them, Address Book opens them with a dialogue window stating 'No new cards added". I sent them to Trash and deleted them. Nest time I opened iPhoto, a dialogue window opened stating 'Rebuilding Thumbnail Cache'... When I checked through Finder, it would seem the Trashed files have been re-formed. I Trashed them again using Secure Trash... Guess what! You guessed it.. Next time I opened iPhoto, same thing happened.. 'Rebuilding Thumbnail Cache'.. and yes, even though they were 'Secure Trash(ed)', they've reappeared. I'm new to computing, so I'd like to know what is happening, is it significant, and is there anything I can do to stop it. Or am I best just not knowing, leaving the Thumbnail Segment.data files where they are and hoping for the best?

    The photos appeared to be missing because iPhoto had lost track of their locations. This can be caused by user tampering in the iPhoto library folder. If you move or rename the photos or their folders, it changes the file path, which breaks the link to the iPhoto database. Or, sometimes a database file becomes corrupted and iPhoto loses the links even without such user tampering. A power interruption, crash, or force quit while iPhoto is writing to the database can cause database corruption.
    How you recover those photos may depend on the underlying cause of the damage. If you know you moved or renamed something inside the library folder, the fix is fairly straightforward. Quit iPhoto, locate those files inside the iPhoto Library folder (using the Finder -- sometimes 2 wrongs do make a right) and drag them to the Desktop. Then launch iPhoto and locate the thumbnails representing those photos. Move them to the iPhoto Trash (in the Source List) then *empty the iPhoto Trash*. That clears all trace of the photos from the database, so that you may now import the files from the Desktop and start over with them. It would be a good idea after that process to run the database rebuild that Old Toad advised, since the direct manipulation of the library files could have caused minor damage to your database file.
    If you didn't tamper inside the Library folder, then your database may be corrupted. While it may seem to only affect a few photos now, the damage could be hidden and may appear to progress. The fix for this is to follow Old Toad's instructions to rebuild the database. With a mildly damaged database, the rebuild will restore the links to your photos, and all will be well. With a severely damaged database, the rebuild process will bring all the damage immediately to light. In that case, you'll have to resort to more drastic means to restore your library. But wait... you say you keep regular backups? You can take the damaged "Library6.iPhoto" (that's the main database file) out of your current library, and copy the good one from your backup into your library. This will restore your library back to the state of your backup. Any photos you've added or work you've done since the backup will have to be re-imported (as described above) or redone.
    Also, why would iPhoto rebuild thumbnails of .data files from Address Book?
    Those .data files have nothing to do with Address Book. They are created by iPhoto for your database. What happened was that when you opened them, your Mac decided that Address Book was the best application to use for those files. All files have information about which application should be used to open them. To see it, select the file and do File > Get Info (Command i). The get info box has a section "open with" which reports the default application assigned by the file. You can change that assignment there. Or you can right-click (control-click) on the file and use the contextual menu to change the "open with >" designation. When I look at my Thumb...Segment.data files, the "open with" is set to "none". Yours somehow got set to Address Book. Since AB didn't recognize the files, it gave you the error message. You could set yours to "none" but since you know not to open them directly, there is really no need to do anything.
    Regards.

  • Syncing videos taken with iPhone 3GS to iPhoto and back to iPhone again!

    Sorry,
    I know this has been asked and answered many times over on this forum I still don't understand why these won't sync back?
    Videos taken with iPhone 3GS. They will play on iPhone. Now synced back to iMac. Videos will play on iPhoto. They will not sync back to iPhone. Yes, the option under the iPhone in iTunes (Photos>Sync Photos From [iPhoto]>All photos and albums>Include Videos is checked.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance for your help!

    Thanks,
    I will give that a try. But why in the world did they put that option in the iPhone Sync menu in iTunes under the Photos tab if it does nothing at all??

  • IPhoto and Powerpoint Resolution issues

    I'm currently making a book for a recent trip and I wanted to design my own pages versus using the defaults in iPhoto. I designed my own page using powerpoint and sent it to iphoto. When I put the picture on the page in iPhoto it shows the low resolution warning. The photos were taken in 8 megapixel, but the powerpoint slides show in iPhoto as 720 x 540. Does anyone know how to convert powerpoint slides in higher resolution? Did I miss something?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Go into PP's slide sorter mode, select all of the slides and start a print job of them. Once in the Print window select the PDF->Send PDF to iPhoto option. That will produce a 2200 x 1700 pixel jpg file for each slide in the presentation and import it into iPhoto. You can then use those images for your pages.
    If you would like a larger dimension file for each slides edit the Send PDF to iPhoto workflow with Automator and change the 200 dpi to 300 dpi. You can find that workflow in the HD/Library/PDF Services folder.
    Tutorial #6 describes how it's done with an iPhoto book so that you can make a iDVD slideshow or web page slideshow. It's the same process. This is the result of the web slideshow of a book.
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
    Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • PanelTabbedPane and Backing Bean issue

    I have a page with 2 components: a "save" button and a tabbedPane with serverSideTabSwitch set to "true".
    The tabbedpane contains 2 tabs and in each tab there is an inputfield whose value is linked to a backing bean.
    If the user enters a value in the input field of the first tab, then clicks the second tab, enters a value in the input field of the second tab and then clicks the "save" button, only the value entered in the last chosen tab is set in the backing bean (and thus saved)
    Is there a solution for this problem , so that the information in all tabs is set in the backing bean (and also validated) ?
    A snippet of my JSP:
    <h:form>
    <h:commandButton action="#{testtabBean.save}" value="Save" />
    </h:form>
    <t:panelTabbedPane serverSideTabSwitch="true" >
    <t:panelTab id="tab1" label="Tab1">
    <h:inputText value="#{testtabBean.text1}"></h:inputText>
    </t:panelTab>
    <t:panelTab id="tab2" label="Tab2">
    <h:inputText value="#{testtabBean.text2}"></h:inputText>
    </t:panelTab>
    </t:panelTabbedPane>
    My backing bean:
    public class TestTabBean {
    private String text1;
    private String text2;
    public String getText1() {
    return text1;
    public void setText1(String text1) {
    this.text1 = text1;
    public String getText2() {
    return text2;
    public void setText2(String text2) {
    this.text2 = text2;
    public String save() {
    return null;
    }

    3 hours later is worked out is should be false :) Fixes the issue.

  • IPhoto and Facebook - Syncing issues with publication error

    I am having trouble with the syncing function using the facebook icon at the bottom right of iPhoto '09. I create a facebook album with several photos, and it seems to take the appropriate time to upload the photos. But when I go to Facebook, there is only a few, if any photos in the album. It did create the album, however. I delete the album and repeat the same steps, and a different amount of photos would upload this time, but nowhere near the correct amount. Also when i try to sync the albums again, usually an error message comes up saying...
    "An error occurred with the publication of album "(Album Name)." Do you want to remove the album from your library?
    And then in small print
    "The feed could not be found or is invalid."
    And then the option to remove or keep the album.
    Why am I having syncing problems?
    For now I am using the Export function and a facebook plugin which works fine, but I want the ability to add photos to libraries and sync rather than using the export function.

    Same problems here, multiple albums. It will upload a couple photos, then say it can't find the album.
    (then Keep or Remove Album blah blah, because that's a good feature. oh wait, we couldn't find your photos, so we'll just throw em all out, cool?)

  • Time Capsule Wi-Fi and Back-up Issues

    I use Time Capsule to back-up the contents of my MacBook Pro and as a wireless base station (for my Mac, iPad, and iPhone).  Recently, I noticed that Time Machine is pretty much constantly backing-up.  Also, my iPad and iPhone recognize and connect to my wireless network, but when I try to access the internet on either device, I get an error message indicating that there is no internet connection.  I don't have the same problem with my Mac - it recognizes the network and still connects to the internet.  Any help would be much appreciated!

    Redo the setup of the TC.
    Set wireless names (TC name as well is good).. to SMB standard .. ie short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
    Use WPA2 Personal security only with 8-12 character pure alphanumeric passkey.
    If the above is still not sufficent.. set fixed radio channels for 2.4ghz. try each non-overlapping channel, 1, 6, 11 (13 in Eurozone).
    Keep whichever channel works best in your environment.

  • I recently upgraded to Yosemite on MacBook Pro - unable to open iPhoto and Photo Booth

    I recently upgraded to OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 on my MacBook Pro (bought in 2011).  Since the Yosemite upgrade, I have been unable to open both iPhoto and Photo Booth at all.  I have lots of photos and need to access them. Both icons of iPhoto and Photo Booth have a circle with a bar across them, in my dock.
    When I click on iPhoto I get the message " In order to open “iPhoto”, you need to update to the latest version. The version of iPhoto installed on this Mac is not compatible with OS X Yosemite. Download the latest version for free from the Mac App Store".  I have tried upgrading iPhoto on the App store but get an error message "The item you've requested is not currently available in the U.S. store" .
    Since I cannot even view my photos, I cannot store them elsewhere.  Please, can someone help me resolve this problem!!!
    For Photo Booth, when I click on it, it says "You can’t use this version of the application “Photo Booth” with this version of OS X. You have Photo Booth 3.0.3" - gives me no option to upgrade at all.
    Would appreciate help for both iPhoto and Photo Booth issues described above, with iPhoto being the most pressing concern. Thank You.

    The new app is called Photos. It's icon was added to the Dock. Both, Photos and iPhoto, are located in your Applications folder.
    If you need to upgrade iPhoto, follow these instructions prepared by Barney-15E: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-8431

  • Time Machine, iPhoto and External Drives

    Hi!
    My Mac Info:
    Macbook Pro Retina OS X, Version 10.8.5, Processor 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5, Memory 8GB
    I have 0KB out of 120.47GB.
    Audio - 2.33GB
    Movies - 37.12GB
    Photos - 28.66GB
    Apps - 6.98GB
    Backups - 0KB
    Other - 45.38GB
    Ok...the scenario, let's say...
    I backed up in Jan '14 on Time Machine on a G/Drive 1GB. (got it.)
    In Feb '14, I ran out of space on my Mac, so I deleted photos to make room and did another backup, photos and everything. (got it.)
    In Mar '14, I backed up again.
    Question 1.
    In the Mar '14, back up, it only backed up the photos from my iPhoto library that were current, it did not back up the deleted photos.
    So how do I see a complete photo library? The deleted photos and everything on my G/Drive? This scenario was fictitious, however I'm in a situation where I've been deleting photos in iPhoto and backing up to make space since Dec 2012. I don't know  how retrieve a true library that has everything! (The photos that I have deleted, btw, have not been duplicates.)
    Oh, the reason, why I want a complete photo library is because I want to externally print a album of our 3 yr old son. But when I go to the back ups, I can't tell which files have still have the photos that I deleted. So, how can I piece together all of the photo libraries for 1 comprehensive library without showing duplicates?
    Question 2.
    My external drives
    G/Drive, S/N 7DGVE8MA - 1TB (I use this for Time Machine).I have used 295GB
    WD My Book, WD P/N WD5000h1Q-00 - 500GB, (Backup to my G/Drive).I have used 45GB
    Are these good external drives?
    Many, many thanks!

    Your profile shows 10.6.8 - you might want to update it.
    If you are backing up using Time Machine, do you have a backup prior to when you started deleting photos that you could restore?
    There seem to be multiple problems with WD drives in the discussions, but whether WD is a bad brand is hard to say.

  • How do I copy iPhoto 7.1 Library from Intel to PPC Mac and back

    Hello all
    I apologize for the long first post; but I've been lurking for a while and haven't seen a similar problem. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    I have two Macs - a PowerBook G4 and an Intel Mini. I copied the 6.x Library from the PB to the Mini. The copy was successful - no issues. I upgraded iLife on both machines successfully: both machines opened the 6.x Library and updated it the 7.0.1 Package Library. All was well.
    I updated both machines to iPhoto 7.1. All was well.
    I updated the PB to 7.1.1 + all the recent updates. All was not well! The Library seemed to be corrupted! When I clicked on a thumbnail I would see the photo "zoom" but then I'd see a black window. Clicking again would unzoom and I'd again see all the thumbnails. If I tried to export a photo Preview couldn't view it because it was "corrupt" or should be opened by another application.
    After numerous troubleshooting steps - repairing permissions, deleting preferences, trying to rebuild the thumbnail caches, rebuild the Library, recover lost photos etc I gave up.
    I've wiped the PB clean and installed Leopard and iPhoto 7.1 - not 7.1.1.
    Now I want to copy the iPhoto Library from the Mini (also iPhoto 7.1). I tried copying the package across the network by "Connect to server" in Finder but that produced the same "corrupted" symptoms. (Thumbnails would zoom to black window.)
    So here's the question(s):
    Are there any incompatibilities between Intel/G4 versions of the iPhoto apps or Library Packages?
    What is the best way to manually copy the Library from the Mini to the PB? And back?
    I use the PB on the road and on vacation to capture my 'photos; but I like to display them on my HDTV connected to my Mini - hence my need to periodically copy the Library from the PB to the Mini.

    No.
