i delete pics form iPhoto and they keep coming back again... help as I'm duplicating my efforts on back up ...

Deleting Photos from an iPhoto Library
1 - from an Event or the Photos mode: select the photo(s) and use the Delete key to move the photos to the trash bin. Then empty the iPhoto Trash bin as follows:
2 - from an album, smart album, book, slideshow, card, etc.: select the photo(s) and use the key combination of Command+Option+Delete to move the photos to the trash bin. Then empty the trash bin as above.
Note: The last 12 month album is a smart album.
NOTE: deleting a photo from an album, slideshow, book, etc., with only the Delete key only deletes that photo from that item. Deleting a photo from an Event deletes ALL occurences of that photo in the library.

Yes - you need a min of 10 GB just to operate - with just 1 you certainly can lose photos and other critical things - you need to make space immediately - probably by moving your iPhoto library to a volume formatted Mac OS extended -
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

I downloaded pics from my camera to iphoto on my macbook pro and forgot to click 'import all. Then i closed iphoto and deleted the pics from the camera. i know I'm screwed, but i'll give this a try, is there any way to retireve these pics?

Use an app like MediaRecover to get the pics back from the card.

Moving and deleting pictures

I have 48 GB of photos on my iMac and would like to move all of them to my external firewire hard drive. I would actually like to have iPhoto then access the pictures from the external hard drive as well. What is the best procedure for this, and how can I reclaim some hard drive space?

You can have iPhoto use the library from an external drive. Close iPhoto. Use the Finder to copy the entire iPhoto Library Folder (all in one piece) to the external drive. When complete, hold the Option key as you launch iPhoto and click "Choose Library." Navigate to the iPhoto Library folder on the external drive, then click Open. iPhoto will continue to use the library from there until you option-launch again and tell it otherwise. When you are absolutely certain that all is well with your library you can delete the iPhoto Library folder on your internal drive to free up the space.

Iphoto crashed, deleted pictures from camera

Iphoto just deleted all of the pictures from my camera, without importing them. These are my honeymoon pics,any ideas on how to recover them?

And in the future never have iPhoto (or any computer program files- import them and test them (I wait for at least one backup cycle) and then use your camera's format command to reformat the card and erase it

Iphoto and uploading pictures

I am having problems with my photos on my mac. I have them all organized into folders in iphoto. But then, when I go to email pictures, or share pictures on snapfish.com, I cannot locate my folders in iphoto. The pictures are completely disorganized. I think they are divided by roll # instead of in the folders I created for them in iphoto. Anyone know how to find the iphoto folders when trying to upload? Thank you!!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Because iPhoto is a database application, you are supposed to stay out of the iPhoto Library folder altogether. Rooting around in there from the Finder is a recipe for disaster, as any changes you make will damage your database. In addition, your Albums and Folders are virtual entities that exist only in the database file; they don't exist in any folder structure accessible from the Finder.
The sanctioned way of doing this is to select the photos using iPhoto (not the Finder). Then do File > Export > File Export to a folder on your Desktop. You have the option to rename the exports or resize them for better performance in an email. Select the exports for your email or uploading, then delete them when you are finished. Exports are copies; your files remain safe in the library.

What is the relationship between iPhoto and my pictures ?

I hope you don't mind if I pose another question to you: one that's been bothering me for some time. It has to do with iPhoto and storing photos in general. So far I have been placing my photos in >my mac>my pictures and then working through iPhoto to sort them into categories, events, etc. So far, so good, but I don't understand the relationship between the two. For example, I can create new folders in iPhoto, but that doesn't change my original folders in my pictures at all; so where are the iPhoto folders on my mac? And if I delete from >my pictures, then does that also automatically delete them from iPhoto, or visa versa? The set up that I would ideally like to have is that everything I do in iPhoto automatically updates my actual photos in >my mac>my pictures. Is that possible? Or am I going about this the wrong way? You're going about it the wrong way
iPhoto is a Database. The entire point of it is that you can manage your photos without recourse to your files. This is more powerful and a whole lot more flexible than files in folders.
iPhoto can run in two modes: Managed and Referenced.
In Managed (the default mode) your photos are copied into the iPhoto Library when you import them. I would strongly suspect that this is the case in your set-up. This is the best way to run iPhoto.
It also means that you now have two copies of the photos - on in the iPhoto Library, the other in your Pictures Folder. (And by the way, there's no "my pictures" folder on a Mac. It's just the Pictures Folder. I'm always amused by the "my" prefix on WIndows folders. Who else's files would they be? If they belong to someone else, shouldn't you have a "their" Pictures Folder too? Any enough of a pointless digressions)
In Referenced mode iPhoto does not copy the files into the LIbrary. It simply references them where you have put them. I'll add a bit to the end of this post explaining some of the gotchas with this mode.
How can you tell if you're running a Managed or a Referenced Library? Go to iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. Is the box at Copy Items to the iPhoto Library checked?
As iPhoto is a database there is
a: No relationship between the photos in your Pictures Folder and iPhoto if you have a Managed Library
b: Minimal relationship if you have a Referenced Library.
For example, I can create new folders in iPhoto, but that doesn't change my original folders in my pictures at all; so where are the iPhoto folders on my mac?
They are entries in the iPhoto database.
And if I delete from >my pictures, then does that also automatically delete them from iPhoto,
Again: depending on whether your Managed or Referenced:
a: Managed: No it does not, makes no dfference to iPhoto at all.
b: Referenced: You've just corrupted your iPhoto Library.
When you use iPhoto it's your "Go To" app for photographs. The point is that you don't manipulate the files in the Finder any more. You use iPhoto to import, iPhoto to organise, share and so on, you use iPhoto to Delete too.

Managed: Deleting from iPhoto also removes the files from the HD.
Referenced: Deleting Files from iPhoto only removes those elements within the iPhoto Library. You then need to trash the original file yourself. Why? When you elected to Reference the files you said to iPhoto "I want to manage the files myself" So manage them.
The set up that I would ideally like to have is that everything I do in iPhoto automatically updates my actual photos in >my mac>my pictures. Is that possible?
That's not possible. That's file organising, and as I said, iPhoto is about Photo organising. Albums, Folders, Slideshows etc in iPhoto are all virtual, that is they are entries in the database. The advantage of this is that a photo can be in 50 albums and use no extra disk space at all. Also, iPhoto has no ability to manage files outside the iPhoto Library Folder.
So how do you actually get to your files if you want to email, upload etc?
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.

*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
*To work with another editor*
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.
Finally +On Running a Referenced Library:+
*How to do it:*
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
*What Happens:*
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
*Some things to consider:*
1. Importing and deleting pics are more complex procedures. You have to to put the files where they will be stored before importing them. When you delete them you'll need to remove the files from the HD yourself.
2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
4. Because iPhoto has no tools for managing Referenced Files, if, for some reason, the path to the photos changes then you could find yourself resolving aliases for +each photo in the Library+ one by one.
My own opinion:
I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organiser
I know there's lot there, so by all means post back if you need more

How can I import all photos from iPhoto and delete all the ones currently on my iPad?

I uploaded all of my iPad's photos to iPhoto('08) thinking it would be easier to delete and organize them. Now that I've done that in iPhoto I need help finding out how to delete all the photos from the iPad and have the iPhoto photos imported from iPhoto back to the iPad.

This workflow may do what you want:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new library.
2 - connect the iPad to your Mac with the new library open.
3 - import all of the photos from the iPad into the new library.
4 - select the option to delete all of the photos from the iPad.
5 - disconnect the iPad and delete the new library.
6 - launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and select your original library.
7 - assemble the photos destined for the iPad so you can easily identify them by album or event which you alread have done.
8 - launch iTunes and connect the iPad to your Mac.
9 - go to the photos section for you iPad and synce those particular albums or Events with the iPad.
That will get those specific iPad photos back into the iPad.

Image Capture didn't import photos to iPhoto and now pictures are deleted

I went to import photos from my camera like I normally do. Image Capture opens up and I hit "import all" and always have "delete after import" checked. The pictures imported and then it's supposed to open up iPhoto (which it did) and then import the photos into there, but it didn't. iPhoto opened and then sat there with a blank page, nothing happened, my photos weren't uploaded and now my camera is empty and the photos are gone. How did this happen? And how do I get my pictures back?? Please help!!

BUT! I used "Find Any File" demo software and it helped me find the "photos" but they weren't in iphoto, but on my mac(still not too sure where it was found.)
Do you have "Find Any File" still open?
If you click one of the found images, it will show you the path to the image files.Could you post what you are seeing then?
Does the path start with your Home folder or outside? Desrcibe exactly the the names of the nested folders.
Now my new problem is that the photos that were uploaded(or found) are tiny and pixelated. What i'm hoping is that I found a cheap version of the photos that were uploaded or something,
Perhaps you found the thumbnails folder - if you can give us the path there, we may be able to find the matching Masters or Originals folder.

(2) I hear with Iphoto6 you can set preferences so that RAW files are saved as 16 bit TIFF files instead of JPEG files so that when you are editing them you are editing a lossless file? Is this correct...what exactly does that mean?

Yes. But not iuntil you empty the iPhoto trash.

Yes, this is set at Preferences -> Advanced
What it means is that jpeg is a compressed format, which saves space, but is a lossy format - that is everytime you edit and save a jpeg you throw away information, and the file gets a little smaller. To the eternal credit of those who developed the format, you have to waaaay down the generations before you see a difference onscreen. It shows up sooner in print.
.tiff not a lossy format, so nothing is thrown away when you save. But the file size are much bigger, they could be 10 times the size of the corresponding jpeg.
btw the same is true of mp3 files and aiff music files.

Error when opening iPhoto and missing pictures

I don't know what exactly would have impacted the fact that when I open iPhoto is goes to a message saying "Your Photo Library was not found" I don't know where it would have gone. I downloaded the new version of iTunes and allowed iPhoto to sync to my iPod. I only synced some of the albums I created but the ones I did, show up on my iPod but I have now record that they were ever on my computer. I did a search for them in Spotlight (came up with nothing) and I don't even have my pictures folder anylonger. I know I didn't delete the folder or the pictures. I just want my photos back. I want to know what I can do, if anything, to get them back. I know I should have backed them up/saved them somewhere else, I realize that but I didn't. So where do I go from here?

First of all, look for the iPhoto Library folder in your Pictures folder. Is it still there? If so, then you have a chance to recover your photos.
Next, look in the library folder to verify that your .jpg files are still readable. You will have to go down multiple levels. Click on the .jpg file icons to open them. Do not make ANY changes to the files!
The .jpg files are your photos. If you can't find them, then you can try searching for them. If you tell us what version of Mac OS X you are running, we can tell you how to do the search.

Import to iPhoto and delete originals

I have messed with Image Capture and Automator, but I cannot get this to work.
When I connect my iPhone, I want the following:
1. All images from the iPhone camera roll imports to iPhoto.
2. All images from the roll is deleted. No questions asked.
There ARE some checkmarks for "Delete after import", but it doesn't work. How should I do it?
Please help...

The version is 9.5.1 of the one Library I want to move all the originals to Aperture, and 9.4.3 of two others that I am not using and could get rid of...

In your first post you said that you are trying to import an iPhoto Library with
"File > Import > Library > User (me) > Pictures >my iPhoto Library".
This command is used for merging two libraries into one. I assumed you want to merge your iPhoto library into your Aperture library to make one unified library from both libraries. But now you are saying you want to import the originals. Do you really want to discard all your iPhoto edits and metadata? If you want to import only the Masters folder from your iPhoto library, then it is no wonder that the command does not work. You cannot import single folders with "File > Import > Library", only incomplete libraries.
Why not really import the complete library as library to merge it properly into your current Aperture library and save all your work you have done in iPhoto?

Organizing my Library and Deleting Pictures

In my library I made duplicates of all my pictures for editing and now I need more space on my hard-drive for movies so I want to delete my original photos and leave the edited versions. I put all my originals in a folder and saved them to disks, I want to know if there is a more efficient way to delete the originals off my library without tediously going through again and selecting every other picture?

This is not necessary as iPhoto retains your original at all times. So now you've got your Original, your Original Copy and your Modified versions. Not duplicating before editing will save you 1/3 of the disk space.

How do i remove vidoes and photos from iphone 4s memory once it has been synced and all photos imported to iphoto and deleted from iphone camera roll?

I have iphone 4s and imac. Have synced phone with itunes and imported all pictures and vidoes to iphoto which were then deleted from camera roll as prompted by iphoto. i have however no memeroy in iphone as 1000+ images and vidoes showing in the memory bar of iphone summary on itunes.
Must be an easy fix but I an't work out how to do it

In iTunes find your device and navigate to the Photos tab at the top. Uncheck 'Sync Photos from' and click Apply. Do the results change?
