Iphoto and GarageBand broken since restore from backup

My main problem now is getting iPhoto and GarageBand to work. But below is some history of my problem:
My MackBook was returned today from the fixers. I had previously created an account for the engineers and wiped all the others. When I used Backup to restore it restored my account to the current engineers account! keeping the login name and password for the engineers account... at this stage a look in the finder showed me that only my account had been restored/backed up.. and as just mentioned with the wrong login details!!!!
I have resolved to wipe and reinstall OSX and then try to restore...... NO LUCK, NO copy of backup to restore from!!!! And I could not remember my airport pw (idiot!!) so couldn't download it!
Righty ho, I have the Web, Email and itunes working now.
But iPhoto & GarageBand do not start at all. What can I do to fix?
Btw I have reinstalled iPhoto to no avail.

Apple's tech support advised me to do an 'erase and install'. Then to try to perform a restore within Backup. If that failed I was asked to call back for further assistance. I was ok though and didn't need further help.
In a step by step way how things got fixed:
I booted from my OSX install disks that came with the computer, chose the option to erase the HD and perform a fresh install.
Installed the system and the bundled apps. (I did a custom install to choose only the software I wanted)
I then ran software update and got the mac up to date. Once done I tested all the Apple apps.. Restored my .mac data... all was now working YIPPIE!!!.
After that I hunted down and installed all 3rd party apps I had been using.
I used "http://www.versiontracker.com/macintel/" ...most apps I use were bought online or freeware, and the versiontracker website is the easiest route to find them all again.
I now had to get my data back. BackUp still showed it was missing although I knew my backed up files were valid.
I checked those backed up files were safe by right clicking on one of my backup packages (created by Apple's BackUp) and chose view package contents.
I then navigated my way to the "sparse image" file which will open just as a disk image (.dmg) would. Inside that I found my data from my user folder (which BackUp had reported not there). Opened up several files of various types to check such as jpegs, movies, text files and pdfs. I was not aiming to restore any applications from this back up.
I manually copied my files from the backup and put them in their relevant folders. I only copied things like my pics, movies, documents.
Ran "Disk Utility" and repaired permissions on my HD.
I Shut the Mac down and then booted up, logged in and all was fine and dandy.

  • Photos mysteriously vanished and iphone won't restore from backup. iOS 6

Ok well hopefully someone has a good answer for this because I know numerous techs that currently work for apple that are going to have some very colorful stories to tell their familes over dinner about an irate customer they were trying to "help" earlier in the day.  After updating to iOS 6 I suddenly realized that not only was every App, contact, and song missing but also every picture that I had on my phone.  I began to sigh a sigh of relief when I realized that after syncing with itunes the Apps, contacts, and songs were replaced with great haste until I realized that I still had none of my pictures.  Mind you alot of the pictures are saved in otehr locations on the computer and some to my email but there are several pictures of my twin baby girls that have been saved over the course of the last 8 months that were only on the camera roll.  I looked into the issue a bit and found a solution that looked promising.  Restore the iPhone 4s to the backup file that was made by iTunes that was before the pictures were all erased.  Followed the manual perfectly only to recieve error messages about how there is not enough space on my hard drive to create a file.  Not only is there more than enough space but the message itself is extremely confusing because I am not trying to make a file....I am trying to apply a file that is already on the C Drive to the iPhone through iTunes.  I have manually went into my hard drive and located where the file is being kept.  Mind you it is all encrypted but after the arduous task of adding up all of the little file's and big file's sizes I have come to the conclusion that this is indeed the backup file seeing as how before all my information got molested I had a little under a gig of space of my phones 13.5 capacity and after adding aaaaaaalllllll the files together in the "backup" folder I came out to a figure of ~12.5.  If anyone is willing to or can help then please do because currently teh words irrate and ****** don't begin to illustrate the anger that is boiling within me at the thought of paying a company for a service and being a loyal customer and then having 8 months of memories ripped away because of some glitch or mishap.  Thanks    (to whoever can help, not to Apple ((Apple can rot and die for all I care))  )

Just had the same problem, did this and it worked.
Delete all of your previous backups, do an new backup from scratch, and then restore from the new backup.

  • Restoring From Backup? Can't!

I am not really sure as to where I should post this thread because it is quite a mixed topic. I recently updated to the iOS 4 on my iPhone 3GS 32GB, i first deleted everything of it and then wanted to restore from backup after the update. Update all worked fine until I realised I could not even choose a backup?! iTunes had skipped the step and had gone straight to naming my iPhone. So i restored again, but this time I watched iTunes. Oh right a message come up (from windows) saying 'MobileSyncHelper' has stopped working. How am I going to restore from backup now?! I have tried reinstalling iTunes and the Mobile Device program. Many thanks in advance.

  • My iPod won't restore from backup

I have an iPod touch 3rd gen 32 gb. I backed it and recovered it, then restored from backup, however, now it is stuck between the lock screen and a loading circle. Is there a way to fix this without recovering it and not restoring it?

    Not likely
    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Restoring from backup & bootcamp

I have a new hard drive (replacement as a result of a sudden failure) and now preparing to restore from backup. My backup is a bootable clone in an external drive, from which I'm now running. Yeah I'm on the spare tire, so hopefully no accidents before I get to my destination.
Originally I had OS 10.7.5 with a boot camp volume for Windows XP Pro. The Win partition had only apps and not data, so losing it was no real loss. I can reinstall Win XP along with all the Win apps.
So I'm now in Disk Utility trying to figure out how to partition the new drive, but I remember boot camp did that for me. Or does it? My fully functional OS 10.7.5 cloned volume is Mac only. It did not include the Windows volume.
How should I proceed to restore from backup and create a Windows partition?
For example, I'm looking at the partition schemes in the DU options, and they read:
    GUID Partition Table
    Apple Partition Map
    Master Boot Record
Yet I remember boot camp did it for me so that I can get Apple software updates directly from within Windows.

A note previously posted by The hatter .
Windows 7 system backup and restore - Apple's goofy HFS read-only interferes with system and file backup.
For future reference here are some comments on Boot Camp backup that I have collected from this forum.
WinClone was handy for XP users but doesn't for instance check for errors during the backup only during restore.  It was discontinued at 2.2, all 2.3 versions are hacks (removal of the OS check seems to be the main thing)
Acronis 2011 w/ plus pak, didn't work well previously
    Ghost 15 - probably not
Casper 6 works for Windows on Boot Camp only but some report it failed.
CopyCatX is more lengthy and sector copy so takes the longest.
Paragon Hard Drive Suite 2011 because it works great and they have CampTune

I try to open I photo and  I get the message, your iPhoto library is damaged...please restore from backup. But i din't made backup copy. How can i delete previous library and work wrom the new one?

Try this (assuming you're using iPhoto 12): make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
      Fix #1
delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library.
    Select options #1, #2 and #6.
    Fix #3
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

    Restore from backup.

  • Hello. I have updated my iphone 4 to ios7 after doing a backup to itunes. I am caught in a loop of being asked to 'restore from backup' as part of setup and that restore failing because the phone already has it's content I believe. Please help if you can.

Hi. I have an iphone 4 that I have just installed ios7 onto. I had backed up the phone prior.
After the software install the phone rebooted and showed the 'Hello' setup. I am stuck because as part of the setup it asks me to 'restore from backup via itunes". I dont understand why i need to do this as I thought the ios7 install procedure would restore the phone with it's content.
I tried to restore from backup but it says I cant because there is not enough space on the phone. If I connect the phone to itunes, it shows that the phone has all my content, especially since iphoto launches and I can see all the photos it wants to download to iphoto off the phone.
I am caught in a loop. My phone has it's content, but the startup procedure on the phone will not let me progress until I have restored from backup via itunes. But it cant because the phone has no space!!
The only other option it gives is 'Set up as new phone".
    Can anyone help please. Thanks.

You should be syncing your contacts with an app on your computer or cloud service (iCloud, Gmail, Yahoo, etc), and not relying on a backup.  If you haven't been doing this, start now and then restore your old backup.  You will then be able to sync the new contacts back into the phone.  However, you will lose all messages, etc newer thant the backup.

  • I just got a new iPhone 6 but when I did the restore from backup of my old iPhone 4; none of my pictures were there and almost all of my calendar was missing. Can anyone help?

Hi, I just bought an iPhone 6, 64GB and had everything ready to do the "restore from backup" from my old iPhone 4 8GB. It kept stopping and I'd have to start over from the beginning. When I finally got it to do something with the help of my provider(who had walked me thru from the beginning anyway); I figured I was all set. Then I went to see my pics to use one for my lock screen and there were NO PICTURES AT ALL and only part of my calendar came over. I'm missing a lot of future appointments that I know are set up. I made sure not to wipe out my old one yet; as I will have to since I did the trade in plan; so I still have my old iPhone 4 and it has everything in it, in addition to having the backup on two computers in the house.
I also tried syncing it after the restore since things were missing, but that didn't work either.
I would appreciate any help so I can use my phone and get going with it.
    Thanks!

Did you choose the wrong back up? There should be a drop box when you go to "Restore from Back up" in iTunes and your iPhone is plugged in, on the Summary page. Choose the correct back up. If you can't find one, and you still have your device, back up your iPhone 4 again and then choose that back up. Or check for an old iCloud back up if you have one.

  • My iPhone's "Other" capacity has suddenly jumped to 56G out of 64G. Yes, you read that right. Every time I try to sync to recalculate, it gets worse! Please help! Can't even restore from backup now, since my backup is all "other"!

I have fully up-to-date everything on my iPhone and computer and iTunes. I have an iPhone5 and MacBook Pro. I synced my iPhone this morning and it has 12 or so gigs of free space (even with my music and some photos on it). Then I deleted some voice memos in iTunes, and wanted to sync again to reclaim the space. When I tried, it said I had 29G of "other" data and that my phone was way over capacity and can't sync. I tried a few online solutions to force it to recalculate, but now it says it is about 90% "other"!! Only 8G of 64G free, and "other" is the ONLY thing in the summary bar.
I un-checked music for syncing, thinking that must be the problem. It did not help.  Now there is nothing on my phone except "other", according to iTunes (not even photos).
I cannot restore from backup now, since the backup includes the giant "other". I don't want to delete my info on my phone knowing a corrupted backup is my only alternative.
    Help!

Thanks so much Meg. Unfortunately, iTunes is the program I use to perform syncing. I don't really have other outside options. It is also the location of the backup I would use to restore my phone, and my only way to reclaim important data. I am concerned that, since the last backup occurred when the "other" bar was only moderately huge (around 29G I think), that a backup would replicate the problem back onto my phone.
My contacts, etc. are all in address book and the calendar app on my Mac.  As far as I know, iTunes is the way to get them back, but iTunes is where the problem is.
    Any thoughts on this?

And why not? Apple is selling these things like BigMacs. They can't make enough of them. You've been suffering since May because you refuse to get a decent router.
Can you imagine if a company that makes a refrigerator told me that I needed to upgrade my electrical system to rectify a problem with their device? What kind of response IS that?!?!
What if the problem with their device is that it requires a new-fangled "grounded" outlet and your circa 1890 house doesn't have grounded outlets. Would you refuse to purchase a $ 25 adapter on principle?

  • Backing up an iPad/iPhone and Restoring from Backup

To preface this post, I have always had Apple products and currently own an iPhone, iPad and MacBook Pro. I have also spent about 4 hours on the phone with Apple support staff and they recommended I make a post on the Apple Support Forums.
Basically, this is a warning that when you backup your iPad or iPhone, Apple only backups contacts, notes, photos, calendars, and mail.
According to the third representative I spoke to, Apple does not, I repeat DOES NOT, actually back up music and playlists in your iTunes on your devices or backup the apps you have on them.
I had to get my iPad replaced because the smart cover was corroding and I did a full backup before I brought my iPad in to the Apple store. When I tried to restore from backup, everything but my iTunes libraries and my apps reappeared. For most, the iTunes wouldn't matter, but I was using a newish computer and had not yet organized my music library, although I had transferred all the songs back from an external drive. The apps are always a pain, since you have to manually download all of the ones you want after going to your purchases in the iTunes store.
However, a helpful thing I did learn, despite the fact that all my music from my iPad was gone, was that you can restore old playlists by quitting iTunes and going to Finder > Home > Music > iTunes and selecting iTunes Music Library.xml and dragging it to the desktop. Then you open iTunes and click File > Library > Import Playlist and select iTunes Music Library.xml from your desktop.
Anyway, this is one of the first times I have been thoroughly fed up with Apple: if their policy is to not back up music or apps when a user clicks backup, then they need to make it clear. Before I restored from backup, those files appeared in my iTunes as if they existed, although according to my Apple representative, they never did.

All the information about what gets backed up is available from Apple.  Here's the article explaining what is contained in iTunes backups (see "iTunes will back up the following information"):
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946
Most people will not have the unfortunate coincidence that you had wherein you wanted to restore a backup because your iPad needed replacement and simultaneously had an issue with your computer that had been storing your music.
So although the iTunes backup does not contain your music, you could subscribe to iTunes Match as described here and get that music all stored in the iCloud for you.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4914
    I hope this helps.
