IPhoto/Aperture 1.5 Integration questions

Aperture 1.5 allows you to keep iPhoto pictures where they are with a "reference" from Aperture.
But since I upgraded to Aperture 1.5, I have the opposite problem -- how do I keep my pictures in Aperture but have iPhoto reference them? With previous versions of Aperture I already copied in all my iPhoto pictures and subsequently got rid of my iPhoto library (to save space).
However, I would like to use iPhoto for its better Slideshow capabilities and FrontRow integration.
So here are some questions:
[1] Should I just set preference in iPhoto to not "Copy files to iPhoto Library Folder" and import the entire Aperture library?
[2] Will it copy the albums from Aperture intact?
[3] How much additional disk space (if any) will this use up?
[4] What is the signifcance of setting up previews in Aperture (which I have done)?
[5] In iPhoto I see that there is File>Show Aperture Library... where I can see thumbnails of my Aperture pictures. What else is this used for? (i.e. can I import pictures using this feature?)
[6] If, subsequent to import, I add to the Aperture libary, will that automatically synchronize with the iPhoto library, or do I have to iPhoto-import the entire Aperture library every time new photos are added to the Aperture library?
iMac 17 1.25 GHz; iMac 20 Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

[1] Should I just set preference in iPhoto to
not "Copy files to iPhoto Library Folder" and
import the entire Aperture library?
[2] Will it copy the albums from Aperture intact?
This will work if your Aperture library's masters are stored by reference. However, it will only copy the masters, not an album structure. It won't copy your adjustments either. Just the masters.
[3] How much additional disk space (if any) will this
use up?
iPhoto will build JPEGs for each master image, so you will use some disk space.
[4] What is the signifcance of setting up previews in
Aperture (which I have done)?
Previews will allow you to browse your Aperture library in iPhoto. You can decide what images are made available to iPhoto. These are the versions, not the masters, so adjustments made in Aperture will be seen by iPhoto (as opposed to importing the masters).
[5] In iPhoto I see that there is File>Show Aperture
Library... where I can see thumbnails of my Aperture
pictures. What else is this used for? (i.e. can I
import pictures using this feature?)
You can drag images from that window into iPhoto, which will import the JPEG previews so you can use them in slideshows, etc.
[6] If, subsequent to import, I add to the Aperture
libary, will that automatically synchronize with the
iPhoto library, or do I have to iPhoto-import the
entire Aperture library every time new photos are
added to the Aperture library?
There isn't any automatic synchronization, but I think the following is a good approach:
1) When importing your masters into Aperture, don't have Aperture copy them from the CF card into the library. Instead give it a folder to copy them to. In addition, specify a sub folder that is "Project Name". By doing that, your import will be separate from other imports.
2) Make sure iPhoto is set to reference images not copy them into the library.
3) Then, when you want to synchronize with iPhoto, just drag the directories containing the projects that you want synchronized directly to iPhoto.

  • Question about import photos into iphoto/aperture

I have my own folder of photos in my hard drive. If I want to import them into iphoto/aperture, will all the photos be dupilicated on my hard drive?
If yes, this will use double of my hard drive space, it's not a good thing, right?

There are a couple of ways to answer this.
    1. Yes... and no... and no
By default iPhoto copies the files into the iPhoto Library when importing. This is called a Managed Library  If you work in the default setting then your "own folder of photos" is pointless and you can trash it.
You can set iPhoto to simply reference the files - that is not copy them. However, I strongly urge you not to do this, especially if you're new to Mac and/or iPhoto. For more on this:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3062728?tstart=0
In the case of Aperture there are less pitfalls running a Referenced Library. You can also run Managed Library with it.
In any case, with either app, if you go the Managed route then the idea is to trash your own filing system. It becomes pointless.
More importantly, if you use either iPhoto or Aperture then you never access the files in those folders anyway. Anything and everything you want or need to do via your Photos is done via the Manger - i.e. iPhoto or Aperture. These apps quite replace the Finder for the task.

  • Advice:  iPhoto - Aperture transition

I finally upgraded and got a new iMac last weekend so I treated myself to Aperture2 as well and I'm really excited to get started with it. So, I've spent all day reading up on the process. I think I've come up with a decent plan as far as transitioning over from iPhoto to Aperture, but I thought I'd run it by the experts here and make sure it seems feasible.
    My plan:
First, i'll transfer my iPhoto library over into Aperture as "referenced" and just leave the iPhoto folder right where it is. In Aperture, I go File->import->iPhoto Library and then in the import window I put it to "Store In: Their Current Location".
Question: I'm assuming that Aperture can read the iPhoto library and sort it into the same folders and what-not?? Will it create all of the same folders, etc. or will I have to do that all over again in Aperture?
Once I have moved all of my iPhoto stuff over I will be ready to import new stuff. For this I plan to create an "Aperture Masters" folder on the mac. I then put all photos there first under their corresponding year and month. Then, I import into Aperture for editing, etc, using referenced masters.
If for any reason, I want to export the JPGs out of Aperture (with edits "burned" in, I could do that and import them into iPhoto if I wanted to put them into a slideshow or whatever.
Question: Rather than importing the "burned" JPGs into iPhoto and making another copy of it, I've read that I can view my Aperture Library from within iPhoto. But, from what I gather, i will only be able to view the "previews" from Aperture...so, if i simply reference the Aperture library from withing iPhoto, I won't be able to see any edits that i made in Aperture? Is that correct? In order to see the final, edited version in iPhoto it would have to be manually imported...?
Then, for backup I'll copy my iPhoto, Aperture, and "Aperture Masters" folders over to my external HD (and in the future a second external HD that I can keep offsite). The iPhoto backup will basically be a one time thing since i won't be adding stuff to it very often. Then, the Aperture Library folder and "Aperture Masters" folders would get backed up weekly or something.
I don't fully understand the "Vaults" yet, but from what I gather I'll create a vault on my backup drive which will store all of the edits and metadata...but the actual Masters folder I will have to Finder Copy myself.
So, if you were starting from scratch and wanted to transfer your iPhoto library into Aperture and then move forward using Aperture, is this how you would approach it?

My backup plan for using Referenced images was going to be...
Finder Copy my "Referenced Masters" folder to my external drive...and again to another external drive kept off-site. I'll probably try to implement some kind of system where I burn a DVD backup of masters immediately after importing them...but i haven't figured that part out yet.
I'll probably use the Vault feature in Aperture to back up the Aperture Library files to both external drives.
So, i'll have all of my Masters on the mac and on 2 different External drives. I figure this way, when I pop a memory card in, I will simply create a new folder in my Referenced Masters folder for the event (on the mac) and drag the images in...then do the same thing on the backup drives. Basically copy the images to 3 different places from the memory card. This way, my masters will always be backed up no matter what.
Then, I'll have to figure out how to use the Vault system to backup the Aperture Library. Or, just Finder Copy it to all 3 places as well.
Does this sound like a solid strategy?

  • Merging iPhoto & Aperture libraries

I want to merge iPhoto & Aperture libraries but I have three questions before I do this:
    1. Both programs have different events and albums organizing my photos. When I merge the libraries, does each program keeps the photos organized the way that are right now or does it also merge events and albums? After I merge the libraries, when I creat an album or an event in either program, does the event or album appears in both programs?
    2. After I merge the libraries, when I import photos from a camera or the iPhone, does it automatically refreshes in either programs and the new photos appear in both programs? I guess this is a dumb question but I just wanna make sure.
    3. I Have an external HD backing up my aperture library in a vault but my iPhoto library is not set to back up automatically like the vault thing in aperture. After the merging, now the vault is going to back up the whole master library?
I appreciate the help and guidance with this questions.
    Proto V.
PS: I am mexican so english is my 2nd languaje, I apologize if I commited a gramatic mistake

The key question here is what versions of iPhoto and Aperture do you have?
If you have the latest vesions of both, then merging is as simply as using Aperture's File -> Import -> Library command.
Again, if you have the latest versions of both, thereafter both apps use the same library. So, new photos don't "appear in both programs", they go into the Library and you can use either app to see them.
Yes, after merging the vault will back up the Library.

  • Using Pictures in iMovie That AREN'T In iPhoto/Aperture/Photo Booth?

    Hey,
I was wondering if I could import photos into iMovie to use in projects that aren't in iPhoto, Aperture, or Photo Booth. These are my only options to choose from when I click on the camera button to add photos. And you can't import photos into iMovie, just videos. There are several projects I'm working on that use pictures that I don't really want to keep in iPhoto. If I can't add photos from Finder, then I have another question. Say I import the pictures I want into iPhoto, then add them to my iMovie project. If I then delete them from iPhoto, will that affect my project? Thanks!
    Kate

    What's going on?
Can demonstrate what I do but cannot diagnose your problem without amplifying information. For instance, to which "iMovie window" are you dropping photos? Since photos are stored directly to the named_Project package, they can only be added to a Project and not to an Event (if that is what you are trying to do).

  • ITunes, iPhoto & Aperture - odd sync issue

    Hi all,
I am a user of both iPhoto & Aperture, with unified photo library, and occasionally sync one or more events to my iPhone (rather than syncing all photos automatically).
I've noticed recently a rather odd issue, where iTunes does not seem to be "seeing" my iPhoto library. If I set Aperture to the source, then all my events/projects show up correctly. If I choose iPhoto as the source, 0 photos .
Opening the library directly in either iPhoto or Aperture works just fine - all events and photos present and correct - so the issue appears to be around the link from iPhoto to iTunes - weirdly, given the unified library, Aperture to iTunes seems to be fine.
Whilst I _could_ just sync to Aperture, a) the error bugs me , and I'd like to sort it out, and b) iPhoto is a better manager of events (chronological order etc) so I would prefer to use iPhoto to sync to iPhone, iPad etc.
I'm running Mountain Lion and both Photo apps are up to date. Hopefully some kind soul can assist!?

    Hey Aljrob_UK
Thanks for the question. It sounds like there may be a permissions issue with your iPhoto library, let's see if repairing this will help to resolve the issue. See the additional information section of the following article:
Important: Please backup your library first (http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2504)
iPhoto 6 and later: Rebuilding the iPhoto library
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2638
    Additional Information
iPhoto 9.3 and later introduces a new Library First Aid dialog in place of the previous rebuild options.
If Repair Permissions does not resolve your issue, attempt Repair Database and/after Rebuild Database. You can skip the Rebuild Thumbnails.
    Thanks,

  • I need to minimize the space photos take on my MacBook Pro OSx 10.7.  They are in iPhoto, Aperture, Pictures/Photo Library, etc.  Are they taking space in all of these locations?

I need to minimize the space photos take on my MacBook Pro OSx 10.7.  They are in iPhoto, Aperture, Pictures/Photo Library, etc.  Are they taking space in all of these locations?

Are they taking space in all of these locations?
It depends on how you are using iPhoto and Aperture.
iPhoto and Aperture each create their own library files, and the default location for them is in /users/youruseraccount/Pictures
You can configure iPhoto and Aperture to use the same Library file, in which case your photos are only stored once.  But if you are using iPhoto & Aperture with independent library files, you may in fact be duplicating your storage.
The second consideration is whether or not you have configured iPhoto and/or Aperture as reference libraries, in which case their library files only reference photos you have stored in other places on your hard drive.  Setting them up as reference libraries does not duplicate the photos inside the library files.

Both my iPhoto, Aperture and OX is update still having problem asking me to update my iPhoto.

Make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) if you don't already have a currnet backup of the library and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Duplication of Photos between iPhoto & Aperture / Memory Issues

Is there a way for iPhoto & Aperture to share the same photos, so that there is not a duplication of photos and too greatly reduce memory space for those of us with large libraries????

iPhoto only imports the files from your card, in exactly the same condition as they exist on the card. It does not duplicate. It does not reduce quality or lose pixels. Check your camera's manual. The most likely cause of the duplication is that your camera gives you a simultaneous RAW and jpeg (or tiff) file for each photo you shoot. Your camera probably has a control where you can turn this feature off.
You can check your camera card. Click on the Finder's icon in the dock. Your card should be listed as an external drive in the left column of the Finder window, somewhere below your Macintosh HD. Set the Finder window to column view and click on your card to display its contents. My bet is that you will see the duplication there, before you ever import to your library. Click on a file to see its information in the next column; you can check the pixel dimensions if they are reported there with the Preview.
I import from a card reader as well. You can ignore the initial iPhoto "Importing" screen and click back on Library in the Source Pane. Choose File > Import to Library, then navigate to the camera card. You can preview the files on the card, select only the ones you wish to import, and import directly into the iPhoto library. This gives you complete control over your imports and prevents you from importing duplicates.

  • How to prepare for iPhoto/Aperture shutdown?

I have almost 50K images in my iPhoto library. I also have Aperture, but really just purchased it to be able to manage libraries over multiple drives. What should I be doing to prepare for the iPhoto/Aperture sunset?
    Thanks

It's only late afternoon in our little clearing in the orchard.  We have about a year before sundown, and several months after that before darkness swallows our hole.
Sit tight for now.  Keep your database in good working order.  Rigorously edit your collection.
Apple will come out with a successor photo management application.  I call this PhotOSX.  We know nothing actionable about it.
There is little reason to do anything until you can see if PhotOSX meets your needs.  And no reason to hurry even once it is announced.
FWIW, I have several thousand hours invested in a complex workflow centered on Aperture.  I am considering "freezing" my system when the successor to Yosemite is released, so that I can continue to work with Aperture for a few more years after that.
This is discussed regularly.  Look for other threads here, and elsewhere.

  • Why does iPhoto/Aperture keep deleting photo sets from my Flickr account or keep placing whole sets back into the Pending stage of uploading the photos. This is becoming very frustrating and extremely time consuming. Any help would be most welcome

Has anyone got any idea as to why Iphoto/aperture keeps deleteing my photo sets from my Flickr account without warning or reason given. Also when I enter my sets the program will revert all of the photos back to the Pending stage of the up oading process. One or two photos I could live with but some of my set are in excess of 1500 photos per set, and this becomes very very time consuming to re upload them. and whats more annoying on some occassions after spending 12 to 16 hours re uploading them I find that they have all been duplicated. Is there a Bug with Iphoto or Aperture????????
any help would be most welcome P Jefferys

I am using Iphoto version 9.5.1, and No I am not deleting any photo from any file. what happens is this :- I open up Iphoto and enter my flickr account via the shared folder icon on the left hand side of the screen this is when I get a pop up screen from Iphoto informing me that they have removed a SET of photos from my Flickr account (no reason given) when i go into that set all I can see is dashed empty square where the photo used to be. I will then get another pop up screen saying that Iphoto can no longer access my flickr account and will I permit a reconnection and allow Iphoto to access my flickr account (add pass words etc) when I get back into flickr the SETS have gone and all other photos enter the Pending stage again. After re uploading the missing photos I find that some 50% of them have been duplicated.

  • Process Integrator question?

    Hi,
I'm not sure where to ask a Process Integrator question so I have
decided to ask here. I have been asked to look at business
process (workflow) automation. I have read the datasheet and your
whitepaper on Process Integrator and my question at the moment
is "How do we integrate Process Integrator with existing sets of

of EJB's deployed on top of the app server ala Commerce Server)?
I'm looking for more technical answers so that I have a reasonable
understanding in estimating how much work/effort it would take
to use this product. I also know that this is your engine for your
future Collaborate product, however, that product will not be
available soon enough to tackle our customers current needs.
Thanks for your patience in reading this long message and

technical reason to my manager about why we should
consider (or not consider) using Process Integrator.

  • IPhoto Aperture library intergration.

Is there a way so that you have 1 libary for both Aperture and iphoto?
So that if I import in iPhoto Aperture updates, and vica versa.
Cause if I import iPhoto into Aperture, you can have the masters stored in iPhoto, but when you add photos to iPhoto Aperture needs to reimport and it reimports ALL the pictures... So I have doubles and have to tripple sort.
So is there a way that the libarys can be universal?

You can share the images, by pointing both at the same reference files (thus you must use referenced files in Aperture).
You cannot share adjustments between the two programs -- their libraries are separate. And Aperture includes a lot of additional functionality that iPhoto doesn't have.
For more information on how to share libraries, view Joe Schorr's podcast on it (I linked to it in this forum a couple days ago)... and have a search of this forum, as this has been asked probably 20 times. Search works quite well

  • None of my apple apps can export files, including Mail, iPhoto, Aperture and Preview.

None of my apple apps can export files, including Mail, iPhoto, Aperture and Preview. When I try to export a file from any of these programs, the app hangs for a few seconds and then does nothing, not even open an export dialogue. Same thing happens when I try to attach a file to an email. Also, maybe related and maybe not, Photoshop will crash after the splash screen. All of these app function properly when using a different User Account.
I've tried deleting my application preferences in my user library and when that didn't work, I deleted my account and then created a new one that used the same user directory, which still didn't fix anything.
