I got a new Macbook pro in March and transferred all of my old files into the new macbook from my old one. But ever since then, my iPhoto just does not open up. It says 'error' every time I try to open it, but I am still able to attach the iPhotos saved to emails. Help! How do I get my iPhoto back?

    Thanks, Sig.
The old computer is a 2.6 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
The new one is a 2.3 GHz intel core i7
In going over this, thanks to "tallking it out" with you, I did discover the Text Edit problem.  Because I've still been unable to get the new computer text size (fonts or whatever) to match the old computer, I did not notice that the curser is now different--the line midway down the curser has to be placed on the line I am working upon, otherwise the edits go elsewhere on the page.  Now, with a bit of difficulty, I am able to get Text Edit to work correctly.
If you have any ideas as to why my menu bar and Text Edit type are still so slow, I'd love to have them.
(I went through the process you suggested earlier, re my Trackpad preferences, and found no improvement.)

Since updating iPhoto it has ceased to open.  I have tried to Hold down the Command and Option keys on the keyboard which is the suggested solution to then open a suggested solution to rebuild the library,  but it does not work.  iPhoto still does not open.  can someone please help?
    thank you

    Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
        Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
    2 - delete iPhoto's cache folder(s):
    Home/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto
and, if there is one, the
    Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: For Mavericks, 10.9,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:

  • One of my applications does not open. how can i delete and reinstall, one of my applications does not open. how can i delete and reinstall

One of my applications does not open. how can i delete and reinstall it?

    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead.  Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
    AppZapper
    Automaton
    Hazel
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • My applications does not open only working apps are safari and finder

  • HT201250 time machine application does not open

Tried to open Time Machine but the application does not start up.
    Software is up to date.
Preferences are set to "on" with oldest backups from November 2011 and plenty of room left on external hard disk unit.
Need some tips or tricks to be able to search a recent backup for missing files.
    thanks!

Please try each of the steps below that you haven't already taken.
    Step 1
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Try again to enter Time Machine. Post any messages that appear in the Console window – the text, please, not a screenshot.
    Step 2
Open the backup volume in the Finder. You should see a folder with the name "Backups.backupdb". You should not see a file with a name ending in "sparsebundle". If you do see that, the backup was created over a network and can only be used that way.
    Step 3
Launch Disk Utility and select icon of the backup drive in the pane on the left (not any of the volume icons below it.) At the bottom of the window, you should see this:
Partition Map Scheme : GUID Partition Table
If the partition scheme is anything else, the drive has to be repartitioned (with the loss of all data.)
    Step 4
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder... from the menu bar, copy the text on the line below into the box that opens, and press return:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the Finder window open for now.
Relaunch the Finder by selecting  ▹ Force Quit... from the menu bar, then selecting Finder and pressing return. Your Finder settings will be lost.
Try again to enter Time Machine. If you still can't, put back the file you moved to the Desktop, replacing the newer one that will have been created in its place.
Otherwise, close the Finder window you opened and delete the file you moved to the Desktop. Recreate your Finder preferences.
    Step 5
Boot in safe mode by holding down the shift key at the startup chime. Try again to enter Time Machine.
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.

  • Iphoto application does not respond

When I attempt to open iPhoto, it does not respond. I have to force quit.

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
    what system are you running?
are you runnning iPhoto or Photos?
if iPhoto what version are you using?
    what fixes have you tried?
    where is your library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?

  • Iphoto file does not open in external editor

I have selected Photoshop Elements as my external editor in iPhoto.  When I select a picture file and click 'edit',  Photoshop Elements working space opens but the picture does not appear.  (Same with Silkypix, the Lumix Raw editor).   This is a new bad habit that came with Mavericks.
I can fit both working spaces on the screen and drag the photo into Photoshop Elements, but I should not have to do that.

Which version of Photoshop Elements and iPhoto do you have?  The newest version, Adobe Photoshop Elements 12?
Other than the previous versions of Elements, Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 installs the editor directly at the top-level of the Applications folder, so there are no longer any nested folders to select the editor application from.
But there is a weird glitch, when I try to use it as an external editor in iPhoto.
When I select a photo in iPhoto 9.5.1 and ctrl-click it and use the command "Edit in External Editor" from that panel, Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 opens with an empty window, like you reported.
This does not work: Elements launches on an empty window:
But when I use the "Edit" button in the footer of the iPhoto window and double click it, Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 will open with the photo in the Editor window.
    This does work:
So, for the time being, use the Edit button to launch your external editor, if you are also using iPhoto 9.5.1 with Mavericks 10.9.4.

  • Terminal application does not open automatically a window

Suddenly (but don't know when exactly because I don't use this application very often), Terminal will not open by default the window specified in Preferences>Startup. It will simply display nothing and I have to manually choose a window from the menu. I am not sure when this happened for the first time but I am pretty sure that in the past it used to open a window.

    Hello Bonnie:
Try rebuilding the mailbox (Open mail, select the mailbox, go to the menubar>mailbox>rebuild).
If that does not help, trash a preference file (com.apple.mail.plist) and restart.

  • Adobe Reader X process starts but application does not open

I have Adobe Reader X installed on a Windows 7 64bit OS.  Most of the time (95%) when I try to open pdf files that I've saved locally or on the web the process (AcroRd32.exe) will start, but the application and the file do not actually open.
Sometimes I can shutdown the computer and restart and I'm then able to open pdf files.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the application, but the status does not change.  I still continue to have problems opening pdf files.
I have searched, but cannot find this issue in the discussion board...most users get some type of error.  I checked the event logs on Windows and there are no errors.

    Hi Antonyd22,
I've found the same issue using Acro Reader 9 on Windows XP.
Sometimes, when I try to open some PDF documents which are locally saved on my computer, the process AcroRd32.exe (and AcroRd32Info.exe) starts immideately, but the window is not shown for a long time (more than some minutes); trying to start Adobe Acrobat Reader from start menu, the window is shown immideately but it becames "not responding".
It seems that this behaviour is related to some recent file that it is not more accessible (perhaps because it was located on an unavailable network path).
To solve this issue, try to reduce the number of recent files (Edit -> Preferences -> Document -> set "Document in recently used list" to 1) and to open a PDF file that it is available locally (in order to set the last used file); then close and restart Adobe Acrobat.
In my opionion it is a bug that it is still present with Adobe Acrobat Reader 9.4.7.

  • When I open Iphoto it does not open.  Just spinning

I have been trying to open Iphoto for several days now.  When I do open it, a black screen appears with a white spinning wheel.  I let it spin for quite a while and it will not open.  Any suggestions?

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Encore 6 application does not open

I have CS6 master collection installed on my PC, but after getting an 'internal error' message while working in encore 6, the application no longer opens. Can it be repaired? Do I have to reload it? How do I do that when it is no longer an active product?

Without proper system information and other details nobody can tell you anything. Running the cleaner tool and reinstalling is of course always an option, though it may not fix anything at all.

  • Application does not open?

    Hi,
i wonder if anyone can help me. I have an Imac g4 17 inch (which i have had for over two years). I have a really strage problem. For some reason when I try and open Photoshop CS nothing happens. If I try an open it from the Dock, the icon bounces as though it is trying to open but then nothing happens. Similarly, Adobed Imageready is part of Photoshop CS and this will not open either? All other applications open fine and I have not experienced anything unusual with my mac? I have tried trashing the applications folder and re-installing but I am still having the same problem?
If anyone has any ideas they would be greatly appciated as I am a graphic designer who uses photoshop a lot.
    Thanks in advance
    Steve

    Hi, Steve and Francine —
Thanks so much for "chipping in" on this, Francine!
Steve, in case you're not completely familiar with Francine's final suggestion — it's intended as one means to help isolate the problem (if it "works"), and may very well be a good place to start on this issue. What's involved is setting up a new, temporary "test" user account with administrative privileges — then logging into this account, and testing the problem behavior to see whether it persists.
If the behavior is "gone," then in ~all probability, the issue lies in your user account — and the next thing to try is to delete related .plist files associated with your user account. In an ~odd case like adobe apps — that install other stuff into your user account, too — there may also be other things to consider.
If the behavior persists in the "test user" account, then there are more systemic issues to consider — including, possibly, un-installing.
[I learned ~all this from Francine originally...]
I was hoping that the Adobe Photoshop forum would have the answer for you. I haven't probed it too deeply, myself...
If you decide to proceed with a more thorough "seek-and-un-install" process as Francine has explained — but have problems — I might be able to help a little. That's because I have a list of what was installed on my eMac as part of Adober Reader — if you need to isolate its files. (You've mentioned Photoshop CS and ImageReady; I don't know what other Adobe apps you may have — and, thus, whether Reader is really a conflict.)
Because of Adobe's "unfriendliness" — both in installing and un-installing — I've gotten into the habit of carefully tracking both the installation process and all the changes on my HD after installing one of their apps. That is (I'll admit this seems ~ridiculous, but...), I do a "show all files" from their installer, and I comb through my HD and the installer.log file that's created in ~/Library/Receipts/com.adobe.Reader/ as part of the installation. I even take screenshots of any alerts, etc. I didn't quite understand during the installation. Then I paste all this into a TextEdit doc for future reference.
One lesson from that may be useful to you now — if you find can this ~/Library/Receipts/com.adobe.Reader/installer.log file from the installation — I'm unsure whether it's been overwritten by your re-install(s) — and double-click on its icon, it'll open in Console and provide a list of what was installed where.
The other issue I'm mulling over is whether an aspect of Tiger's Finder or LaunchServices could be involved — but I think you're much better off trying the "test user," Adobe's forum, and more-thorough uninstalling/reinstalling first...
    Good luck!
    Dean
