IPhoto as Default bug?

Every time I open iPhoto after a startup I get the message asking if I "want to use iPhoto when you connect your digital camera?" I always press the 'Yes' button. I have noticed that although the 'Yes' button is shaded blue the 'Decide Later' button also has a blue edging to it. In iPhoto Preferences the Connecting Camera drop down menu I have iPhoto selected. My OS is 10.7.4 on a MacBook Pro. Any idea what is going on and how to remedy this?

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.
I have noticed that although the 'Yes' button is shaded blue the 'Decide Later' button also has a blue edging to it
Quite normal. The 'Yes' button can be activated by hitting return, the 'Decide Late' by tapping the Space Bar. This is available in lots of places through the OS.

  • How to make iPhoto the default photo program

I belong to a photo sharing site where I upload photos. When I click "browse" at the site, iPhoto automatically opens and I can select and upload my photo. A friend with a new Mac does the same thing - clicks "browse," but iPhoto doesn't open.  I think she needs to somehow make iPhoto her default, but I can't figure out how to do that.

Do you mean to upload to the site?
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • IPhoto as Default Program

How do I make iPhoto the default photo program. I also have GraphicConverter installed and it opens rather than iPhoto whenever I click to view a photo. I cannot find in Preferences for either program any default provision.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You can't make iPhoto the default as it it's a digital image manager/database.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • IPhoto '11 scrolling bug

I have been using iPhoto '11 in Mavericks on my iMac and have encountered a minor, albeit irritating, bug. Sometimes when I am browsing photos within an Event, and I right-click the mouse on a photo to bring up the various options (such as Edit in External Editor), the options menu appears very briefly, disappears, and the scroll bar moves a small amount. The options menu disappears so fast that I cannot click on any of them. The problem only arises when there are enough photos in an event to trigger the scroll bar, and even then the problem is intermittent. I have noticed this same problem on another iMac. It only occurs using the mouse, and when I use the double-finger gesture on the trackpad to "right-click", the problem does not arise. Does anyone else have this problem?

A good general step for strange issues is to renew the iPhoto preference file - quit iPhoto and go to "your user name" ==> library ==> preferences ==> com.apple.iPhoto.plist and trash it - launch iPhoto which creates a fresh new default preference file and reset any personal preferences you have changed and if you have moved the iPhoto library repoint to it. This may help
This does not affect your photos or any database information (keywords, faces, places, ratings, etc) in any way - they are stored in the iPhoto library - the iPhoto preference file simply controls how iPhoto works - which is why renewing it is a good first step.
    And restart your computer

  • Iphoto book default text Question

I have completed a Iphoto book and when I select "Buy book" in Iphoto a box appears and says "Your book appears to have default text that has not been edited. Printed books will not include this text. Do you want to continue?" What does this mean?

text boxes include Latin looking default text - this message means that in the book you have a text block with no text entered and as it says. it will not be printed  --  it is a warning not a fatal error and you can still order - but be sure to preview first as the printed book will match the preview

  • IPhoto 9.6 bug while trying to send photos by mail

When I try to send photos via email directly from iphoto I have the following error message :
Votre message électronique n’a pas été transmis car le serveur n’a pas répondu. (Your email hasn't been sent because server didn't ansewer, check you internet connexion, etc...). Of course my internet connexion is working, so, has anyone ever had this bug ?

This solution is for those of you using 2-step verification for your Apple ID and are using iCloud as the mail server that you are trying to mail photos with.
I too had this issue. The problem in my case occurred because I had setup 2-step authentication for my Apple ID. If you have done this then you will get the error message "the mail server did not recognize your email/password...". To solve the problem go to:
    https://appleid.apple.com
    Click "Manage Your Apple ID"
Verify your identity with the device you selected (if this step does not show up then you have not likely set up 2-step authentication and this is not your solution)
Click Password and Security in the left column
    Click Generate an app-specific password
Enter iPhoto as the name of the app
Copy the password and paste this into the password box in iPhoto where you would normally enter your apple ID (in the mail account section in iPhoto preferences).
    And...voila' (I hope)

  • Iphoto 09 default library

Sorry if this has been posted elsewhere....
Does anyone know if there is a way of setting up iphoto 09 for a macbook pro with mac os x 10.6.3 so that it can point to all the photos and folders stored in the mac hd/user/pictures folder.
I am struggling with trying to manage pictures as i now have too many and so want to store folders externally and as a result i am getting tired of moving folders in an oout for every device i have.

Sounds like a job for iPhoto.
Why struggle to manage them? Let iPhoto do it for you?
Import them to iPhoto then - should you need to move - just copy the Library.
You can run a Referenced LIbrary:
    *How to do it:*
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
    *What Happens:*
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
    *Some things to consider:*
    1. Importing and deleting pics are more complex procedures. You have to to put the files where they will be stored before importing them. When you delete them you'll need to remove the files from the HD yourself.
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
    4. Because iPhoto has no tools for managing Referenced Files, if, for some reason, the path to the photos changes then you could find yourself resolving aliases for +each photo in the Library+ one by one.
    My own opinion:
I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organiser
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Disable iPhoto as default camera import programmme

On my other computer (G3 B&W 400 DVD 2nd Rev with OWC 500MHz G4 ZIF + 1GB RAM running 10.3.9), when I plug in my digital camera, iPhoto starts up automatically. I want to use another programme to import photos and have to first force quit iPhoto. Is there a pref setting I can't find to disable that and select another programmme to start?

  • Aperture cannot import anything from iPhoto and other bugs!!

Aperture is buggy. Recently, I just updated Mac OS X to 10.4.5 and also updated iLife 06. Now I cannot import anything from iPhoto. I tried import images from iphoto or import iphoto library, both not working. I can import images from other directories but jut could not see anything display under iphoto library directory. Trying to use import iphoto library, click choose and then nothing happens.
If you create a smart web gallery, all photos will be automatically duplicated.

I used Pacifist.app to find iPhoto in the iLife '06 install package and then installed the app in the default location replacing the bundle that was there.
the normal method gave me an install error.
Thank you to the person who discovered this.
I was going nuts trying. I have 6 iphoto libraries with 30,000 photos in total and some would import fine and others would not. couldn't tell the difference between them and had forgotten the update. just got a new iMac intel and wasn't paying attention. Causality

  • Opening iPhoto - Library defaults to "middle" of range

This is a rather esoteric question about the library that I hope I am capable of explaining.
When first starting iPhoto 9.1.1 527 (iLife 11), the window opens with you somewhere in the middle of the entire library instead of towards the top where your most recent events are. It was a UI preference I liked in earlier versions of iPhoto. You start iPhoto and you're automatically at the "top" of the scroll; i.e. at your most recent events. I've not found a way for iPhoto 9 to default the library opening window to the most recent events, it's always somewhere in the "middle", which requires me to manually scroll down to the top.
Does anyone know how to fix this so my events tab always opens near the most recent events?

Deleting the pref file is the first step.  It can be corrupted at any time.  So next, make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library.
    Select options #1, #2 and #6.
    Fix #3
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Creating a QT movie in iPhoto 5--possible bug with OS 10.4.3

Playing around with the new feature that allows you to "print" to PDF and think I found a bug. From what I understand, you should be able to create a book in iPhoto, go to Print and choose "Save PDF to iPhoto." This would save each page in your book as an image that can be made into a slideshow. This is an awesome feature that really simplifies the process of sharing books as a slideshow, BUT, it doesn't work in 10.4.3. We tried it on 10.4.2 and it does work. Has anyone else come across this issue?

    Hi Helen,
I just did a test run to see if I had the same problem as you, and I do.
I got an Automator Applescript error. I do remember seeing posts about some Automator actions/workflows being broken with 10.4.3 in the other forums.
Maybe you might find more info by going to one of those forums. I do think that this will have to be a bug fix.
Wish I could have been more help, but I think we are all in the same boat right now.

  • Iphoto constrain default

I have used Iphoto for a long time.  When I have clicked constrain it would automatically defaut to 4x6.  This was great as that is what I used 99.9% of the time.  However, tonight, the constrain is defaulting to 5x7 (1 L, 2 L)  I am so used to the other, I am afraid I will forget to change it.  Anybody have any idea why it all of a sudden changed?  I have done no 5x7 pix tonight.

    Yes.
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
