Iphoto ate my pics and albums

When I click on IPhoto to open, all that happens is the little icon thing spins for hours. I can't see my album names, I can't see my pics or anything. Yet if I look in a file, I see that the albums are there.
Also, it won't let me import new pics from my card. Any ideas?

Hi, Kathy, and welcome to Apple Discussions. Hold down the Shift and Option keys while opening iPhoto. Continue to hold the keys down until you're asked whether you want to rebuild your library. Click Yes, then click Save, and wait for the rebuild to be completed.
This will create a new "iPhoto Library_1" folder inside your Pictures folder, alongside the original iPhoto Library folder, and will open the new Library. When you're thoroughly satisfied that all is in order in the new Library, you can trash the old one and empty the Trash to regain the disk space it's taking up.

  • IPhoto ate my pics

I had just imported the contents of my SD card into iPhoto (7.1.5). It got to the part where it asked if I wanted to delete the originals and, because I've done this enough to trust iphoto, I clicked on "Yes".
    ***Crash***
    iPhoto unexpectedly quit.
I restarted iPhoto and the news couldn't be worse. Not only is the most recent import listed the last one I made a month ago, but it lists the SD card as EMPTY. NOTHING IN EITHER TRASH.
    Am I screwed?

First you should be able to recover the photos from the media card with an application like MediaRECOVER.
Next make a temporary, duplicate copy of your library and apply the three fixes in order as necessary.
    Fix #1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your HD/User/Home()/ Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your HD/User/Home()/Library /Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #3
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Welcome to the Apple user to user assistance forums
can you tell us any more? It sounds like you imported an old iPhoto library into a new iPhoto library - you should never import an iPhoto library into another iPhoto library
If this is the case do you still have the old library available?
If you do then quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library form the pictures folder to the desktop and drag the old iPhoto library to the pictures folder and launch iPhoto - you will now have an intact library with no duplicates

  • I can't get the classic template in email in iPhoto to show pics?

I was using email in iPhoto to send pics, and they always showed the picture when I used the classic template/design?  Now, I don't get any pictures or a text box!  They do email correctly, but without any text and no ability to see what I am sending.  Done the restart, etc, but no luck.  The pictures do show up in the other templates, however, which is really strange.

File on web forms is attached to the case. Go to the case in the admin and you can retrieve the file.

  • HT1040 trying to make an ibook and have 800 photos, want format of 8 photos/page, but default is not that- "create" the initial book from iphoto "album" it loads less than 800 pics and then when i change layout i have blanks.

trying to make an ibook and have 800 photos, want format of 8 photos/page, but default is not that- "create" the initial book from iphoto "album" it loads less than 800 pics and then when i change layout i have blanks.
if i clear the book so that it is all blanks and then try to load in the pictures i have it loses the chronology of the pictures that i had established in the album.
is there a way to import photos into an ibook template and keep the original order of the photos without having to do them one at a time?
also, is there a way to insert a photo rather than just dragging it? i have tried the cut and paste funciton but it doesn't seem to work, the target site doesn't seem to register with iphoto.
    many thanks for your help.

Photos are added to book in chronological order.  So if you want to add them to a book in the order you have placed them manually in an album do the following:
1 - select all the photos in the album.
2 - use the Photos ➙ Batch Change ➙ Date menu option as shown here. Select any date and add 1 minute between photos.
3 - select just one photo from the album and create a book from it.
4 - in the book click on the Options button ➙ Book Settings button and make sure the checkbox for Auto-layout pages is unchecked.
5 - drag the album with your book photos onto the book icon and they will be imported into the Photos tray of the book in your pre-determined order but not into the pages themselves.

  • When I click iphoto it hops and the top menu bar comes up but that is it no files and albums come up it just has my front page pic

When I click iphoto it hops and the top menu bar comes up but that is it no files and albums come up it just has my front page pic

A good general step for strange issues is to renew the iPhoto preference file - quit iPhoto and go to "your user name" ==> library ==> preferences ==> com.apple.iPhoto.plist and trash it - launch iPhoto which creates a fresh new default preference file and reset any personal preferences you have changed and if you have moved the iPhoto library repoint to it. This may help
This does not affect your photos or any database information (keywords, faces, places, ratings, etc) in any way - they are stored in the iPhoto library - the iPhoto preference file simply controls how iPhoto works - which is why renewing it is a good first step.

  • How do I get iPhoto to publish an album with both pics and movies in it?

The built-in link to iWeb seems to assume either:
    (a) I have lots of pictures, but no movies, or
    (b) I have ONE movie, and no pictures.
    This is kinda frustrating.
I expected there to be some easy, clever, way to one-click publish an album with a mix of pics and movies.
    Is there a check-box someplace I don't know about? Or a HowTo?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi bdm105!
Most likely, this is happening because the Album Artist field is different for each song from Random Access Memories. We have an article about song grouping in iTunes, and it can be found here:
Why aren't songs with the same album art grouped together?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1468
There are a couple ways to fix the information listed for Random Access Memories outlined in that article, but I want to point out one here:
Albums in which all songs don't have the same Album Artist information
iTunes 7 and later includes a new attribute for song files called Album Artist This allows you to assign a primary artist name for an album that many includes songs by several artists. It is important that all songs in the album have the same Album Artist name. To assign an Album Artist, select all the songs in the album and choose Get Infofrom the File menu. Next, type a name in the Album Artist field name such that it will apply to all the selected songs. This field can optionally be left blank if all the songs have the same album name.
The Album Artist field is shown in the above picture, but it is not highlighted. You will also want to make sure the Track Number field contains the correct information for the album, and information on that field can be found here:

  • I am having macbook air recently my iphotos did not open and was showing report apple and reopen but i came to know that by pressing alt and iphotos i open an new photo library and stored the pics but now how can i get the pics which i had in the earlier

i am having macbook air recently my iphotos did not open and was showing report apple and reopen but i came to know that by pressing alt and iphotos i open an new photo library and stored the pics but now how can i get the pics which i had in the earlier photo please help me to recover my photos

    Well I'll guess you're using iPhoto 11:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Recently, there is a bug on my Mac OS X Lion, while trashing an iphoto the errant pic does not go to trash bin, but simply disappears! Which makes it impossible to change my mind. The trash remains empty, yet the pic is gone, and I never even emptied

Recently, there has been a bug on my Mac OS X Lion, while trashing an iphoto the errant pic does not go to trash bin, but simply disappears! Which makes it impossible to change my mind. The trash remains empty, yet the pic is gone, and I never even emptied the trash (because it never made it to the trash)! How to recover the album I just accidently made disappear in this way?

Sorry - there have been no updates to that system for a long time
Try to backup your iPhoto library and lanch iPhoto while holding the option and cannoned keys down - repair permissions and if needed rebuild the database

  • How can I import keywords and albums from iphoto 5?

I have new imac with iPhoto 7.1. I'd like to import the keywords and albums along with the pics from my old imac and iphoto 5. Photos import, but not tags or albums. Any suggestions?

    Roy
The trick is not to import, but to update.
Copy the library from the old mac to the new one, then hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. Select 'Choose Library' and point iPhoto at this old one and it will update it to a v7 library, including albums and keywords.
If you already have a new library on your new machine, then use iPhoto Library Manager to merge them or to move the pics from the older to the newer.

  • Question:  Web Album Limit (500 pics) and Library Logic?

I've been using Lightroom for my photos, but the Faces and Places features of iPhoto 09 lured me into giving it a try, and now that I did I have two issues for those of you that use iPhoto:
    1) What is the advantage of having all your photos in ONE file (i.e. the iPhoto Library)? It appears to me that if I want to give a colleague a picture or pictures, I have to export them, or have to option click to find them in the library? Yes, I know that iPhoto has the option to NOT import all yor files, but any changes to the files location and iPhoto goes bananas. So what's the advantage?
    2) Faces and Places: Two GREAT features...that seemed crippled iPhoto's exporting and sharing features. After I tag a HUGE batch of photos, how do I share them with people? I have to export them, which in this scenario isn't bad at all...but the web sharing is ridiculous, as web albums are capped at 500 photos. I know that I can upload in 500 photo increments, but that's not a viable option, because when you combine the batches using Flickr's Organizr, iPhoto only downloads up tp 500 photos for the local copy! What gives?
Anyone else feel my pain or have any workarounds, or words of advice? Don;t get me wrong, I LOVE the Faces and Places features, as well as the Flickr and MobileMe integration, but it just seems half done, or needs a little time to mature.
    Can anyone

    1) What is the advantage of having all your photos in ONE file (i.e. the iPhoto Library)?
It’s not a file. It’s a Unix package. Inside all the files are stored in folders etc.
The advantage is the absolute point of iPhoto - managing your Photos without having to think of file management. Import them, forget about the files, focus on the photos.
It appears to me that if I want to give a colleague a picture or pictures, I have to export them, or have to option click to find them in the library?
Hmm. Those are two options, here’s a few more...
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
    *For Users of 10.5 Only*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
    *For users of 10.4 and 10.5* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
but the web sharing is ridiculous, as web albums are capped at 500 photos.
Having never created a web album of more that 500 photos I did not know of this limit. Been posting on this forum for a while now and I think you may be the first person to mention it. Iphoto is a Mom and Pop photo organiser, firmly focussed on the home user with a point and shoot camera. I don’t know that many folks in the target user group have a problem with the limit.
iPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback. Perhaps they’ll increase it.

  • IPhoto library - Events - pics imported from camera, scanner and internet - it doesn't seem to matter - for a while they show OK but then when I go into the event and start scrolling some--but not all--pics disappear w/ ? small and expanded.

iPhoto Library - events - pics imported to library from camera, scanner and internet.  Some disappear--sometimes when scrolling and other times on their own.  Some disappear when in general event and some when I try to expand the picture.  If when expanding the small pic remains.  It's really annoying.

Are you running a "referenced" or "managed" library?
    Give this a try:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox  "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Is it possible to copy the iphoto library and albums from a G5 to a macpro

I would like to copy my iphoto library and albums from a G5 10.5.8 iphoto 8 to a macpro 10.6.2 with iphoto 9. I would like all the photos and albums to appear in the macpro just as they were in the G5. I have vantecs ezshare adapter that allows you to drag files between two computers mac or windows. Copying photos should not be a problem but its the albums I want to go with the photos and appear in iphoto 9 on the macpro.

iPhoto '09 will open and convert any previous version of the iphoto library - if it is working correctly on the old system it should convert
Firewire target mode is a good way to transfer the iPhoto library - make the connection and drag the entire iPhoto library at one intact as a single entity to the new computer (put it on the desktop or somewhere so as not to mess up what you have done - depress the option key and launch iPhoto on the new system and select the library you just copies (be sure not to select the one on the old computer - you do not want to convert it - conversion is a one way operation) - it should open and convert and be ready to use - then you can quit iPhoto and place it where you want and do the option launch again to tell iPhoto where it is - and do the option launch any time you want to switch between multiple libraries
