IPhoto backing up archiving and transfering

I'm trying to find a method to backup my photos. I have burned about 30 CDs full of pictures but I don't have much time to get this done so I bought a flash drive to try to get more pictues on. I was also convinced that CDs are problematic for really long-term storage.
The only way I could get them on the flash drive was to export, create a folder, and then complete the transfer...took a while. I did it with the 10 events left in iPhoto after my mad CD burns but hope there is an easier way than exporting. If I stick a CD in can I essentially copy/paste? With my PC I could cut/paste or copy/paste but don't seem to be able to cut/paste with my Mac; it only copies. I don't use a mouse, just the pad, if that makes a difference. Please be explicit and simple, I'm fairly new to my Mac.

Yes you are a little confused, aren't you
I did some searching in iPhoto Help and found out where the Pictures folder is located. I did not know that I have a "home folder". I thought I had a "Place"
You're getting the word 'Place' from the SIdebar in the Finder Window. That's a shortcut to the actual location, not the location itself.
I have now seen several references in iPhoto Help that one can have more than one "Library". I haven't found an explanation on why one would need more than one Library.
Well if you can't think of a reason why you would want more than one, you obviously don't need one. That's an option for folks who do see such a need.
The iPhoto Help instructions for "Moving your iPhoto Library folder to a new location" implies that one moves the Library folder out of the Pictures folder.
Implies? I would have thought there was nothing "implied" at all. If you look up moving then it tells you how to move.
Therefore, by moving it to an external drive, is it no longer on computer?
Again, that's what "moving" means.
I just want to save a copy of the iPhoto Library - not remove it from my computer.
So you don't want to move your Library, you want to *back it up*. right?
So, if you drag your iPhoto Library to the External it will make a copy of the Library on the External and leave the original Library in your Pictures Folder.
It will do this because whenever you try and move something from one disk to another the Operating System copies the material to the new disk - a protection against dataloss.

  • IPhoto's deficiencies: Archiving and streamlining

I feel there are two pressing deficiencies in iPhoto that a future release must address. Both are due to the burgeoning size of my iPhoto library.
    1. iPhoto offers to archive photos to CD or DVD, but Apple have clearly indicated Optical media is on its way out.
I could export to individual files, but I fear I would lose valuable metadata created by iPhoto, such as event, face, description or location information.
What I want to do is archive selected photos to an archive format on an external hard drive; a monolithic format that preserves that metadata. iPhoto does not
allow this, and this appears to be a fairly glaring omission in a product that is 10-years mature.
    2. It would be great to have a "downsizing" option that allows me to select (for example) photos in RAW format and downsample them in-place to JPGs of a defined quality, resolution or file size. Converting a thousand RAW photos to equivalent JPGs would save 12Gb of HDD space. Not trivial. I could ask iPhoto to export them and then re-import them, but this is cumbersome.
Am I missing something here? How can I archive my older photos without using optical media and keep all my iPhoto metadata?

I'm with Larry on both these points - and I post to amplify what he says.
Multiple Libraries give you the opportunity to archive easily.
    For instance:
Use a  drive that is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
    3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
    Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager
As Larry says, remember to back up the archive(s) too. Also, remember to update them too when you update iPhoto.
    In regard to this:
could export to individual files, but I fear I would lose valuable metadata created by iPhoto, such as event, face, description or location information.
File -> Export and in the resulting dialogue set the Kind to Jpeg or Tiff. (These two are the only formats that support standard metadata). Check the box at Titles and Keywords and at Location Information and your Photo Titles, Keywords, Description and GPS info will be written to the IPTC and Exif metadata of the Photo. These are industry standard metadata recognised by photo apps on every system.
Then export to folders named for your Events. If you're using iPhoto 11 v9.3 or later this is an option in the export dialogue. On earlier versions apps like iPhoto2Disk or PhotoShare will help you export to a Folder tree matching your Events.
So, with the exception of Faces, you can get any metadata you have added in iPhoto. Why not Faces? Because there is no agreed standard for sharing this information on any system. But you can use it for a keywording system, so all is not lost.
And again, as Larry says, iPhoto is specifically designed to retain the original image at all costs. If you don't want this then - to put it simply - iPhoto is not the app for you.

  • Getting space back after archiving and installing

hi i need help!!! guys after i archived and reinstall leopard. eveyting is fine only that i used to have only like 50 gigs of space used and now it says i have 75 gigs used ... Why is that ?? how can i get my space back and the previous system folder its only taking up like 6 gigs stiil where is ther 15 gigs? its like if installed leopard over leopard again please help! i Want to get my space backk

    Hi JM111;
When you do an Archive & Install the procedure saves the old system for you in a folder called Previous System. It does this just in case something is missing so that you can recover it from the Previous System folder. Once you have tested the system and applications and are satisfied with it, you can delete the Previous System folder which will return some disk back.

  • How can I get my iPhoto back after installing Yosemite OS X 10.10.3?

Can I have iPhoto and Pictures (Yosemite 10.10.3) both on my iMac?  How do I get the iPhoto back on screen and compatible with Yosemite 10.10.3?

Where is the actual instructions to getting my iPhoto back on my iMac?  I can't stand this new OS X Update 10.10.3 for the new photo's app!  This community page only talks about the 10.10.2 but no instructions on how to retrieve the previous version back?
The new display is awful, not appealing at all, can't label the pictures with names anymore, editing pictures, cropping and etc?  Not user friendly!  I don't like anything about this new change!

  • IPhoto 11 very slow and hangs up the computer continuously

iPhoto 11 loaded fine and transferred all my photos. It hangs up a lot when being used. Sometime for 10 or 15 seconds. I ran Disk Utility to repait any permission issues. Still have the same problems. Sometimes it not only locks up iPhoto in a loop, but the whole computer. I normally comes out of the loop, but it is a pain. Anyone else having this issue with iPhoto 11, upgrading from last iPhoto?

This performance issue, slow and locking, seems to affect Mac Pro users more than other desktop or laptop users. Wondering if it could be a graphic card issue (my thinking) since Mac Pros had a graphic card problem earlier. Try rebuilding the library with just Options #1 and #6. If that doesn't help try again with #1 and #2.
Is your library on your boot drive? How much free space on your boot drive (with a Mac Pro I've thinking this is not a problem but have to ask)?
Do you have a backup of your iPHoto 09 library? If so keep it safe.

  • My Macbook Pro 5.5 was slow.  I backed up word and  my photos and wiped it clean.  I reinstalled  Snow leopard but my IPHOTO ILIFE is missing.  I transferred word documents over and photo library but can't find IPHOTO anywhere.  How do i get it back?

    Hi All,
I have a Macbook Pro, 5,5.  It's a few years old and was running slow.  My son backed up my Microsoft Office documents and my photos onto a thumb drive and ran 'wiped my computer clean'...using a disc that came with my computer.  (I am NOT computer savy at all).
I was able to reinstall the Mac OS X install DVD that came with my Mac, but IPHOTO, ILIFE did not reinstall.  I transferred the word documents successfully, and my photos transferred to an icon on a 'library' on the desktop, but I can't use.  How do i get IPHOTO back?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much for responding.  I will look for the other disks.
One more question - I initially decided to do this because my Mac kept opening with the date changed to 2008, and I keep having to re - enter my Web key.  In addition, it was running much slower.  Since I 'cleaned' everything out, I thought all would work perfect.  This morning, the date changed to 2008; again AND it again asks for my Web key.  Does this mean my Mac has reached it's almost end or could I have a 'bug' on it?
Again, thanks so much for your suggestions.

  • After I upgraded to Yosemite iphoto can't recognize my backup CDs which were created in iLife09. Ihave the original applications install disk and my old hard drive(I upgraded  to SSD). How do I get a n iphoto back to read by old CDs?

After I upgraded to Yosemite,iPhoto can't recognize my backup CDs created in iLife 09. The applications install disk won't install iphoto because iphoto 9.5 is already installed..I updated to a SSD and have the original Hard Drive with an updated iphoto which recognized the older CDs(thanks to iphoto expander). I thought that the iphoto that transferred with the new hard drive was the same as what was on the old one. I guess it wasn't. I really need to access my backups.   HELP

Later version of iPhoto write to the library on opening, and so cannot open libraries on optical media, as that cannot be written to. Further, optical media is going e way of the floppy disk. Therefore, you need to use a different form of archiving and back up going forward.
To allow iPhoto to open these libraries you need to copy them to your Mac or an attached external disk.
To merge them into an existing Library will require that you use either Aperture (if you have it) or iPhoto Library Manager.

  • I got a new Macbook pro in March and transferred all of my old files into the new macbook from my old one. But ever since then, my iPhoto just does not open up. It says 'error' every time I try to open it, but I am still able to attach the iPhotos saved

I got a new Macbook pro in March and transferred all of my old files into the new macbook from my old one. But ever since then, my iPhoto just does not open up. It says 'error' every time I try to open it, but I am still able to attach the iPhotos saved to emails. Help! How do I get my iPhoto back?

    Thanks, Sig.
The old computer is a 2.6 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
The new one is a 2.3 GHz intel core i7
In going over this, thanks to "tallking it out" with you, I did discover the Text Edit problem.  Because I've still been unable to get the new computer text size (fonts or whatever) to match the old computer, I did not notice that the curser is now different--the line midway down the curser has to be placed on the line I am working upon, otherwise the edits go elsewhere on the page.  Now, with a bit of difficulty, I am able to get Text Edit to work correctly.
If you have any ideas as to why my menu bar and Text Edit type are still so slow, I'd love to have them.
(I went through the process you suggested earlier, re my Trackpad preferences, and found no improvement.)

  • How can I back up the iPhoto library when iPhoto won't open and I can't simply copy the iPhoto library packet because "some of the data in the packet cannot be read from or written to"?

How can I back up the iPhoto library when iPhoto won't open and I can't simply copy the iPhoto library packet because "some of the data canny be read from or written to"?

Regarding not being able to open iPhoto.  As a test  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Were you able to create a new library?
If so then your current library is damaged and needs to be repaired.
Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start
with Option #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Just purchased a new iMac and transferred all info from my old iMac. Now when using iPhoto slideshow is displays the pictures in reverse order.

Just purchased a new iMac and after transferring all info from my old iMac.  Now when using iPhoto slideshow it  displays the pictures in reverse order.

There's a bug in iPhoto 9.5.1 and Mavericks that affects slideshows played directly from an album.  The slideshow will not play correctly if the photos have been sorted manually.  Any other type of sort, date, rating, keyword or title, will play correctly.
If you need that manual sort of pictures for your slideshow create the slideshow in iPhoto's slideshow mode.

  • Archiving and backing up.

I have recently had a nasty crash in which i lost everything on my system hard drive. now i want to start archiving and backing up to cd. i started archiving with my itunes folder which was around 6gig but the zip file was around 5.8gig. Aren't the zip files sposed to get much smaller? am i going about this the right way or is there smarter ways to back up the data? i also lost a few expensive downloaded programs and because i kept my proof of purchase in my email, i lost any chance of getting them back too. has anyone dealt with companies after having this happen? (lots of questions, i know. help with anything would be muchly appreciated).

    spiffmeister, welcome to Apple Discussions.
You don't say what model G4 you have, but there are better options for backing up than using CDs. If you have a G4 desktop, you can add a second internal hard drive (you will probably be limited to 128GB max) & use it to back up you current HD. If you have a G4 iMac or laptop (or G4 desktop), get a firewire enclosure with a hard drive (you are not limited to size).

  • Is it safe to update my iPhone to IOS 5? I have backed it up, synced it, and transferred my purchases but I still get the error message...

So, yes. Backed up, synced, and I have all my purchases transferred... The thing is, I just got a MacBook Pro for my birthday, and I get the error message saying "Updating to iOS 5.1.1 will delete all of the apps and media, including iTunes Store purchases, on your iPhone. To preserve your content, apply this update on the computer where you sync apps, music, videos, and photos.. "
The computer I had been previously using simply would not recognise that iOS5 was available (it was a Windows PC; this is my first apple computer.)
So... Is it safe to update it?
What would I have to do to qualify this laptop as the "computer where I normally sync"?

If everything is on your computer, as it should be, then you are safe.
    Not sure what you want.
Your iphone simply mirros the selected content of your computer.  If all of your content is on your computer, then it will be on your iphone.

  • I accidentally deleted iPhoto on my mac and it says the the app was downloaded with a different apple id and now i can't get the app back without paying $14.99

i accidentally deleted iPhoto on my mac and it says the the app was downloaded with a different apple id and now i can't get the app back without paying $14.99

Did you install it yourself are somebody else for you?
If you installed them yourself, but do not remember which AppleID you used, try all AppleIDs you might have used in turn.
If somene else set up your Mac for you, ask the person to reinstall it. If you bought the mac second hand, the previous owner needs to contact Apple to transfer the iLife apps. If that is not possible, delete the apps that you cannot update and buy them using your AppleID.

When you export the videos out of iPhoto be sure to select Kind = Original.  Otherwise you'll just get an image file of the first frame of the video.
