IPhoto Backup from External HD- ?

I just backed up my entire system to an external HD. Because I am about to upgrade this particular system to Leopard, I want to make sure my 5,000 photos on that system are surely and properly backed up. I did the backup and when it was done I hooked up the external backup HD to another, newer, Mac to check that all of those photos were there. Well, the Mac I hooked it up to has an iPhoto library of it's own, many (probably all) which are duplicates of the huge iPhoto library from the other Mac. This library only has about 600 photos in comparison to the 5,000 that should have been backed up.
Here's my issue: In the newer Mac, on which I am testing the backup, when I open my Backup HD and click on Users>myusername>Pictures>iPhoto Library, it opens iPhoto but all that shows up in iPhoto are the photos and events that were already in there (the 600 photos). On the bottom of iPhoto, it says "600 photos in 27 events." So, that makes my think my photos are not where they should be. However, when I go back to the finder, and navigate through my Backup HD's folders back to my iPhoto Library, it shows that it contains 25GB on disk, which is the same as the backup should have been (same amount of space taken up as on the old Mac with 5,000 photos. So, they must be in there, but how do I access them on a MacBook that already has an iPhoto Library?
Please let me know if any of this needs to be clarified. I'll stick around for a bit in hopes of a quick response from anyone! Thanks!!

quit iPhoto and start it with the option (alt) key depressed - choose the select library option and navigate to the library on the external HD that you want to check
Afterwards do it again and navigate back to the internal drive so you don't get confused after you move the external

  • Incomplete iphoto backup from external drive

Hi. I just bought a Western Digital My Book to store my IPhoto library since I am out of space on my internal hard drive. I successfully copied my IPhoto library onto the new drive. I set up Time Machine to backup my library onto my Time Capsule. When I looked into the backup drive, only some of the photos are backed up. It seems very random and several of the photos have a blank thumbnail. When I try to restore those photos, it does not work. Furthermore, when trying to solve the problem, I attempted to delete random photos from my IPhoto library to see if I could restore them from my backup. When I deleted certain photos from my library, it also deleted those from the back up disk. That is just crazy and I don't know why that is happening. If anyone has any advice for me, I would appreciate it very much. Thank you. P.S. My old back ups (from before I moved the library) are fine and also IPhoto has been closed during the backups so that is not the issue.

No, deleting an original won't delete the backup. (Time Machine will, eventually, delete the backup copy though).
Are you sure you're looking at the backups of the new version of the library (on the external HD), instead of the ones from your internal HD?
Try this: Start iPhoto. Make sure it's looking at the iPhoto library on the external HD, then select +File > Browse Backups..+ from iPhoto's menubar.

  • Can't read iPhoto library from external drive

I suddenly can't can't read iPhoto library from external drive. I have talked to WD and nohing is wrong with the network drive. I can open images and files from it. But, I can't read in iPhoto Library.

    Network Drive? a NAS?
iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, exporting, saving edits and sharing the photos.
Basically, you need to move the library to a correctly formatted disk.

  • Restore iphoto library from external disk backup

    Dear all,
I need to restore all the iPhoto library after have backup and formatted my MacBook pro with iPhoto11.
Before to format the hard disk I have copied all the "Pictures" folder to an external HDD and it also includes a file named "iPhoto Library".
Then I have formatted the hard disk, installed the OS Montain Lion and iPhoto11 and the iPhoto library was empty at the beginning.
I tried to simply copy the file "iPhoto Library" from the external hard drive backup and substitute the original emply file. Then when I run the iPhoto it said "iPhoto library was probably created with a newer version of iPhoto and cannot be opened" and I could just quit. So I have restored the original empty file.
I've noticed that the file "iPhoto Library" is an archive and can be opened by itself. Is there a way to copy the right files from that archive?
I tried to find a solution in the website http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2504 but it's not valid in my case.
Hope you guys can help me since I had very important pictures in the archive!!
    Thanks in advance.

  • Time Machine backup from external drive to MyBook World

I'd like to back up my external flex drive (w/ about 350gig of pictures) to my 1TB MyBook World which is connected directly to my router (and not my laptop).
My Macbook Pro recognized the drives, I seemed to have everything set up ok. When I went to do my backup I realized that the estimated total backup was only 60gig... clearly the external wasn't included. I went to see the files that were showing as excluded in options & that drive was there. I deleted it from external & in options, the new backup size looked perfect.
Then when I went to actually run the backup, it says Backing up 1.32 gig of 60.67 gig again. When I go back to Options it looks correct in there.
Am I missing something? Keep in mind that I've only been using a mac for a week & 1/2 so I'm still trying to catch up on knowledge.

Thanks for your suggestion. I don't use iPhoto (I use LR and Photoshop & both were closed).
I called apple care support & he said to let it run through the initial backup (which indicates that I only have 60 Gig to backup instead of 400ish Gig) and then to call them back. I will wait until the first backup is completed (hopefully today) and then I may try your suggestion.
The exclusions initially included my external drive and I noticed it right after the backup started. I stopped the initial backup, removed the external from the exclusion list & then restarted the backup... but it was still showing a very small backup. I guess it could have somehow got messed up.
    Again, thanks for the suggestion.

  • Can't read iPhoto library from external drive via airport extreme base stat

I can't seem to open my iPhoto library from my external USB drive that is hooked and being shared through my airport extreme base station. If I plug the external drive directly to my mac via USB it works but not when going through the base station.
This only started happening when I upgraded from iLife'06 to iLife'08.
Anyone have any ideas on how to fix?

That's a problem that many are posting about. Haven't read of a solution yet. Be sure to report the problem to Apple at: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Not able to access my iPhoto library from external harddrive

I get this message when I attempt to access my iphoto Library from my LeCie external hard drive.  "Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable. Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup.
I'm nervous to do as instructed for fear of deleting my photos from the external harddrive.

What format is the external drive? Has the iPhoto library been working on the external drive in the past? What recently changed? what ahppened when you tried
Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again.

  • How to take Auto backup from External Network Drive to Mac pro internal Dri

    Hi,
I have a External Network Drive (Buffalo 1TB) which i use as a server, now i need to take auto backup from that external drive to the Mac i am working on, which has 2TB Internal hard Disk.
Please could anyone help me on this.....
    Thanks in advance

If you are looking to actually integrate what you have on the external one terabyte hard drive with the 2 TB hard drive you're using inside the Mac the best move for you if you want access to that data when using the Mac Pro server is going into utilities click on the top bar where it says go fall that down to the utilities told them that folder quickly once you are there you will see migration assistant click on that you will be asked to type your admin password to that. It will ask you "how do you want to transfer your information" then select from a Time machine backup or other disk when it asks you will be transferring information to your Mac Pro from your 1 Tb backup external hard drive once it's finished eject the drive or reformat it and use it again if your objective was to infect keep compress the data on the external so you have more space but do not have access to it I strongly recommend Carbon Copy Clone 3.3.1 is 100% free and does a fantastic job here is the link http://www.pure-mac.com/downloads/carboncopyclonerdl.html of copying every block to create an exact replica of your source hard drive. If you want something different and don't mind paying SuperDuper! is a great product as well this WebSite will have many options I would stick to carbon copy clone http://www.pure-mac.com/backup.html I also like EMC Retrospect backup and recovery software for the Mac it is a great product but very much on the expensive side for backup utilities although if you need word offers this might be right up your alley.
    I hope I wasn't help,
    Sincerely,
    Thomas

  • Time machine backup from external hdd to time capsule

Is it possible to transfer an time machine backup from an external hdd to a time capsule? I have changed the original 2tb time capsule hdd to a 3tb hdd because of loud sounds from the 2tb hdd. Now i want to transfer the backup from the (now external) 2tb hdd to the new 3tb hdd which is now in the time capsule. Could anybody help me?

Yes, it should be easy.. just copy the sparsebundle from the old 2TB plugged into your computer to the TC.
This will take a few hours maybe a lot more if the drive is near full.. use ethernet.. do not even dream of using wireless.. Do not plug the 2TB into the TC USB.. that is super slow.. plugged into your computer with a FW hard disk holder would be the ideal.. but USB is ok.
    http://pondini.org/TM/18.html
    Is it worth it??
Saving old backups.. or simply start again.. a clean fresh backup is much more efficient. Put the 2TB drive in a draw.. if you haven't needed any files on it in 6months from now.. wipe it.

  • Best way to Import Rebuilt iPhoto Library from External HD to iMac HD

I recently bought a new iMac and transferred the data from my old Mac to the new one. In doing so - I now want to move my entire iPhoto library from an external hard drive to the new iMac internal hard drive. What is the best way to do this?
I had to rebuild my library with iPhoto Library Manager; so all my photos now reside on the external HD in the Rebuilt Library package. I do want to keep all my events, folder, etc. in tact.
Do I just drag and drop the entire package contents? Or should I use the import function? What is recommended?

Will this help: see MacWorld's online article Possibilities for overcoming Finder Error -36 in OS X .

  • How to move iPhoto Library from external drive to new mac?

I have exported a copy of my iPhoto Library from my old mac to an external hard drive. How can I import entire library into iPhoto of new mac? When I click Import to Library, I'm unable to highlight iPhoto Library file listed on my external hard drive in Finder. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Is the iPhoto library on the new computer empty? If it is, quit iPhoto and just drag the iPhoto library on the New Computer to the trash and drag the iPhoto library from the EHD to the pictures folder on the new computer - there is no importing involved - you NEVER want to import an iPhoto library into another iPhoto Library
If you want to run the new computer with the iPhoto library on the external drive simply launch i{Photo while depressing the option (alt) key and use the select library to point to the EHD

  • IPhoto backup and external storage

I have run out of disc space on my macbook. It is full of photos. Everything is backed up with time machine, but I am going to buy another external HD to store all the old photos. I know I can just copy the whole iPhoto library to the HD, but is there a better way? Perhaps an app that will allow my to incrementally add any new photos, but not try to be an exact copy of the macbook (which will have the older photos deleted). Or should I just start to use iPhoto from an externally stored library (this makes me nervous, and obviously I will need to change Time Machine settings). What is the best system? Many thanks.

I recently moved a good bit of my photos to an external drive
How exactly did you "Move a good bit of you photos"? the iphoto library mot ever be modified - it is a single entity and must always be kept intact
the directions you were given for moving you library moved it all
You can archive the older images to the external. But there is no reason not to have the whole library on the external. I have all of mine of externals.
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
    3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
    Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager

  • HT1338 backup from external hard drives?

hello.i have 2 wd 1tb external hard.if i want to get backup from them, what should i do?does it need to having 2 tb free space?please explain.

    Hi,
It does depend on what application you are using to make your back up.
    Lets talk about Time Machine.
IN System Preferences > Time Machine your set the Drive you want the Backups to be kept on.
If this is an External Drive (recommended) then it will need to be connected and On all the time the Computer is On.
On First Run it will Save the whole OS  X Boot drive including the Applications, System, Library and the Users files.
After that it starts making regular backups mainly of the things that Change.
If for instance you wanted to get back a Pic you had Dragged to the Trash from your Pictures Folder you would go to the Pictures Folder on your computer.
Then you start the Time Machine App from the icon in the Dock.
This reduces the Finder window to the middle of the Galaxy Backdrop.
It has a Time slide on the right and some navigation Arrows
Dates that indicate the last few changes to the folder you have on display are indicated on the right (it might not be every date)
You click the arrows that will go to these Dates and then you can highlight the item you want and then click Restore.
At first you will only need as much space as the size if the Hard Drive contents with the OS, your files and anything you have added such as Music and Photos and Movies.
As it make incremental Backups there will come a time when the 2Tb drive will get full.
Time Machine can mange the files it keep after this point.
However just because it gets full does not mean a Full OS X and Application and Users files Restore will need a Drive on your computer of 2Tb.
This is a brief and simplified overview.
Google for pondini time machine faq
Pondini is a regular poster here who has basically taken time to master everything and more that you might want to know about Time Machine.

  • IPhoto Backup to External HD not working.  Any tips?

Hi there. My hard drive is getting full of photos so I would like to put an iPhoto library of old photos on my external HD and keep new photos on my laptop HD. I researched the message board and found the following instructions (thanks to TD):
    =====
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
    =====
I followed these steps but am having a problem with steps 3 and 4. I copied the laptop HD iPhoto library to the external HD, and then as a quality check I added one extra photo to my laptop HD iPhoto library (the external HD copy does not have this extra photo). I then launched iPhoto holding control, and through the Finder window I clicked on the iPhoto library in the external HD. However, when iPhoto opens, the library that appears HAS the extra photo. In other words, it looks like iPhoto is launching the local laptop iPhoto library and not the external HD iPhoto library. So I'm having difficulty confirming that the "old" iPhoto library was, in fact, copied to the external HD and that I can access that external HD iPhoto library from iPhoto.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

To clarify, I launched iPhoto holding COMMAND, not control. Thanks.
Yes, but the instructions say to hold the option (or alt) key
Hold down the *option (or alt) key* while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.

  • Backup from external HD to external HD

I just bought a Mac Book Pro. I mainly use the computer for photography activity (Potoshop). When I was using a Windows PC normally I have stored the files on an external HD backing-up them on further external HD using Cobian.
Now my question would be, using Time Machine is it possible to back-up an external HD on another external HD?
    Many thanks for help.

Hi birba and welcome to Discussions,
yes Time Machine can backup one external HD to another external HD.
Our 'local' Time Machine guru Pondini has put together a very informative Time Machine FAQ to be found here http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Home.html
Especially section 2 http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/2.html clearly states what goes and what not.
