IPhoto Backup To External Drive

I am currently in the process of backing up all my photos so that I can move the main libraries off of my main drive on my laptop.  I have already moved the "iPhoto Library" file to an external drive (Drive_1), re-routed iphoto to locate  the library there, and then run time machine onto another drive (drive_2) that includes Drive_1.  To give a more visual Layout:
iPhoto is located on Drive_1
iPhoto is backed up through time machine on Drive_2
iPhoto is still on my laptop drive as well
While I have iPhoto backed up at this point in the "library" format through time machine, I would like to make a seperate backup onto a third drive (Photo_Backup_Drive).  However I do not want to have it in the "library" format.  I would like to export all the files as ".jpg"s and ".mv4" etc and stored on Photo_Backup_Drive as straight files.  Is there any way to do this where I can update my iPhoto library and automatically have the files moved  on the "Photo_Backup_Drive" as plain files? Thanks for your suggestions.

The only way to get the files from the Library is to export them.
Apps Like Iphoto2Disk Or Photoshare Will Help You Export To A Folder Tree Matching Your Events. I'm not sure about automating them, but you could try a feature request to one of the makers.
Why do you think it's necessary to do this? Can't you just 'Show Package Contents' on the Library and there the files are?

  • Incomplete iphoto backup from external drive

Hi. I just bought a Western Digital My Book to store my IPhoto library since I am out of space on my internal hard drive. I successfully copied my IPhoto library onto the new drive. I set up Time Machine to backup my library onto my Time Capsule. When I looked into the backup drive, only some of the photos are backed up. It seems very random and several of the photos have a blank thumbnail. When I try to restore those photos, it does not work. Furthermore, when trying to solve the problem, I attempted to delete random photos from my IPhoto library to see if I could restore them from my backup. When I deleted certain photos from my library, it also deleted those from the back up disk. That is just crazy and I don't know why that is happening. If anyone has any advice for me, I would appreciate it very much. Thank you. P.S. My old back ups (from before I moved the library) are fine and also IPhoto has been closed during the backups so that is not the issue.

No, deleting an original won't delete the backup. (Time Machine will, eventually, delete the backup copy though).
Are you sure you're looking at the backups of the new version of the library (on the external HD), instead of the ones from your internal HD?
Try this: Start iPhoto. Make sure it's looking at the iPhoto library on the external HD, then select +File > Browse Backups..+ from iPhoto's menubar.

When I try to drag and drop my photos in iPhoto to an external drive (for backup or to transfer them to my other Mac) only some will transfer.  If I copy and paste, the same thing happens.  The photos are all taken with the same camera, but some will not transfer.  It tells me right away - for example, I'll "grab" 3500 photos to drag and move, and the red ball will tell me it's moving 3256 or something.  If I use the copy function instead - copy 3500 photos, it will show in Finder that I can paste 3256 or whatever. This happens on my iMac as well as my MacBook Pro.  It started recently and I've never had this before.  Any thoughts?  Thank you!

Are you able to use the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu to export  the photos into a folder on the EHD?

  • Update Iphoto on an external drive

I have an iphoto backup on  n external drive, unable to open (iphoto 9.4.2) asking to update to the latest version, how can I update the iphoto on the external drive?

What version was use to create the library that is backed up? What version of iPhto and of the OS do you have? And why are you opening a backup? Typically you restore backups and use the restores one - it you open a backup and change it then is is no longer a backup but a second library and you have no of backup of it or of your main library.  The general answer to upgraing a library is to open it with a later version of iPhoto and let iPhoto update it for the version your are using

  • Install iPhoto 9 on external drive

I am transitioning from a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.75 and iPhoto '11 to a new MacBook Pro with Yosemite, and no iPhoto installed.
I want to install iPhoto on an external drive, because I have thousands of photos that are taking up too much space to even fit on my new Mac.
When I go to the App store and choose Install on the iPhoto page, it does not give me the option to choose the location to install it onto.
I have the external drive formatted Mac OS Extended (Case Sensitive, Journaled).
How can I install iPhoto 9 on this external drive?

The iPhoto Application MUST be in the applications folder - it can not be anywhere else
The iphoto library (where you photos are stored) can be on any drive that is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and is directly connected to your Mac with a fast hard wired connection (Firewire, USB 2 or 3, Thunderbolt)
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • Viewing Pictures with iPhoto from an External Drive

Hi... My wife and I share the same computer and we both have a lot of photos stored on our machine. My wife has a magnitude of more pictures than I do. I tried to search for this, but I wasn't having any luck finding it. Maybe I wasn't using the correct key words. Anyway......
Is it possible to save photos imported into iPhoto to an external drive that you can connect to later and view again using iPhoto? Our hard drive is getting loaded down with photos and I would like to have another place to store the photos. Besides, I would like to keep a good copy in our fireproof safe as a backup at the least.
    Thanks,
    Jim

Yes, you can move a Library to an external drive. Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and then
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Cannot open the iPhoto from the external drive?

I followed the procedure to copy the iPhoto Library of my Macbook to the external drive in order to free up disk space. However, the library on the external drive was not in the selection list after the pressing the "option key" and opening the iPhoto, as many have suggested. The iPhoto is version '08. This may be very dumb question. I tried to remove the "Picture/iPhoto Library" and then opened the iPhoto. The response was that " the iPhoto Library not found, etc."   It did not seen to recognize the external drive. I have exhausted my limited understanding on the subject. Appreciate greatly for any suggestion. The MacBook is down to about 5% free space.
    Thank you!

Thank you so much for responding.
The external drive I'd Seagate 500 GB, connected with USB. It is formatted as Journaled. This drive was used as the Time Machine drive before i installed the 2T Time Capsule. I like to relocate the iPhoto Library to the Seagate to free up the internal drive and hopefully a much faster response time on MacBook.
I did what you described. However, the external drive (and copied Library) was not found after holding the Option key and launched iPhoto.
    I did the following tests:
    1) I could launch the iPhoto by double click the icon from either Picture/iPhoto Library or External drive/iPhoto Library.
    2) I modified a picture in either icon and the modification appeared in both.  It seemed, some how, that both libraries are linked.
    3) I used the Disk Utility to verify that the external disk is indeed Journaled. However I do not remember how I erased the old backup files from the external drive.  Do I need to reformat ED again to have a clean slate?
Thank you much for your help!,

  • Time Machine backup on external drive no longer working after upgrade to Yosemite

Can anyone explain why, after upgrade to Yosemite, Time Machine is no loger working? Backup on external drive stops few seconds after it has started. What can I do?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Try running a DVD Lens Cleaner disc through it, a little bit of dust or dirt is all it takes to throw them out and it might just be co-incidental with the upgrade.

I have just installed Photoshop Elements for a MAC. MY photos were in iPhoto, I have 47,000 pictures and my drive on my Mac laptop is not large enough. I store my photos in iPhoto on an external drive. Can I store all my photos on an external drive when using Photoshop Elements? If so, in what format should they be stored in? I do I move them from iPhoto to the new storage location? How do I call them up in organizer? And how do I call them up to Edit? I do not want to store any pictures on my Apple Mac laptop. I want to store pictures on several external devices.

Yes you can store images on an external hard dive and have them referenced in Organizer. It’s best to export copies to separate folders/subfolders and that will ensure iPhoto does not get corrupted.
Alternatively you could continue to use iPhoto with the Elements Editor set up in the iPhoto prefs as your external editing app. Then there is no need to use Organizer and no need to duplicate your images.
You can then call up photos directly from iPhoto as normal with the additional option e.g.
Double-click on a thumbnail to edit in iPhoto editor.
Control (right) - click on a thumbnail to edit in the elements app.

  • Using Time Machine to Backup an External Drive (RAID 1)

Is it possible to backup an external drive to another external drive using Time Machine in Mountain Lion?
The following diagram describes what I want to do.  I am basically trying to use Time Machine as an external RAID 1 system.  However, I don't want to buy a RAID 1 box.  I want to have control of TWO OR MORE time machine setups.  I don't want to backup my OS every time.  I simply want to backup one external drive to another external drive.  The drives are 2TB each, so the advice to buy a big hard drive to back everything up on won't work.  Also, I am often swapping drives and would like to use this system for all of my projects and all of my drives.  Any help would be great.  Thanks for your time.
NOTE: I am on Lion and wanted to know if this was possible before upgrading.

To be clear, TM can back up your external drive perfectly well, provided it's in MacOS format. What it can't do is back up the external drive alone to one destination, and everything else to a different destination.
As for what you should use instead of TM, I don't really have an opinion. SuperDuper and Carbon Copy Cloner are well regarded. You need to make some decisions about backup strategy before you choose a backup method. TM makes incremental backups, so you can revert to any of several earlier versions of a file. Those third-party products can do that too, though not as efficiently as TM. Also bear in my mind that a single backup is inadequate. You need more than one backup to be safe, and to be truly safe, at least one backup must be stored off-site at all times.

  • Can't read iPhoto library from external drive

I suddenly can't can't read iPhoto library from external drive. I have talked to WD and nohing is wrong with the network drive. I can open images and files from it. But, I can't read in iPhoto Library.

    Network Drive? a NAS?
iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, exporting, saving edits and sharing the photos.
Basically, you need to move the library to a correctly formatted disk.

  • Can photos be transferred back and forth from/to iPhoto and an external drive? If so, how?

Can photos be transferred back and forth from/to iPhoto and an external drive? If so, how?

When in iPhoto for iOS you can share your photo to iTunes and then connect your iPad to your computer and use the file sharing window to move the photo to any connected hard disk. Sharing to iTunes is the only way to maintain original file size when sharing a photo in iPhoto for iOS.

How do I save my all the photos in my IPHOTO to an external drive or USB?

to an external drive or USB?
Before you copy the library to the external drive, make sure it has the correct file system. The file system needs to be MacOS Extended (Journaled). If the drive has a different file system,, save the content to a different drive and reform the drive, just like described in this document for Aperture:
Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture

  • How to run iphoto 08 off external drive?

Hi - I'm trying to clear space on my 60 gig power book g4 and was wondering if I can run iphoto off an external drive (where I would house many - but not all - photos). Currently, copying the photos to the drive loses all the iphoto info. Thanks for any help - and I'm open to suggestions as to other methods to clear off hard drive. (Have the same with itunes - I lose all the info when I "copy" files to the external drive). Thanks!

Quit iPhoto and drag your iPhoto library to the external drive (just one big drag - do not drag components)
Then launch iPhoto while depressing the option (alt) key and point use the select library option to point to the external drive - verify your library on the external drive by using it for a while and then you can delete the iPhoto library on your internal drive or you can switch back to it and delete some photos by using iPhoto to move them to the iPhoto trash and emptying the iPhoto trash
DO NOT delete photos or otherwise modify your iPhoto Library using the finder or you will corrupt your library and lose data
You may find that iPhoto library manager is useful in managing multiple libraries - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/
