IPhoto black screen

Just upgraded to Lion and all is going well except iPhotos. I'm using an '09 version. When I came to open iPhone, a message said I needed to update my iPhoto library. I used Option-Apple keys and checked several boxes (rebuild thumbnails, library etc). Now iPhoto opens but the photo areas are all black screens. Only the Apple explanation pages for Faces and Places will display. And each time I open iPhoto the message is that my thumbnailI need to be upgraded. I do have backups on Time Machine and elsewhere. Any suggestions, please?

The problem is fixed. This explanation is for others who may experience a similar problem. I restored my photo library but with the same result: black screens. When I went through the library upgrade, the upgrade 'process bar' indicated the process took only a couple of second, so I don't think anything of note was processed--just as it did the first time I tried this. So I gave up and purchased the lastest iPhoto from the Ap Store. This only resulted in the same black screen problem. I gave my iphoto library a new name then restored an older version from Time Machine. This time the upgrade library routine worked and I watched it upgrade. Now I have all my photos except for Slide Shows.

  • Iphoto- black screen by clicking edit

Every time I want to edit a picture, I get a black screen or the info sign ( white circle with i in the middle) I went to preferences, but could not figure out what the problem is. I am sure it is an easy fix! Who can help?

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • When I click on almost any picture, in any album, to enlarge it, the pic starts to enlarge and then all I get is a black screen with a large exclamation point in the center.  What have I done to my iPhoto program, and how do I fix it?

Recently, whenever I click on almost any of my pictures, in any album, in order to enlarge that photo, it starts to enlarge but then,
very quickly I get a black screen with a large white exclamation mark in the middle.  And no full sized photo. Boo!
What did I do to my iPhoto program, and how can I fix it?
    Thanks for any suggestions.
    Mike H.

I'm sorry.  Too old to understand this stuff.  I'm sure this seems real stupid to you.  But I have no idea how one
would "right click on the Original iPhoto Library" (I know, I know, 'as stated").
Do I right click on the symbol in the dock??  Or open it first and then, . .  I can't find a way to right click on the word iPhoto in the top bar.
Or should I open the program you had me download.  There I can find something called "original iPhoto library".
When I "right click" on that I get some options.  None of them are "original folders".  There's "reveal library in finder", and "dupilicate library and "sort libraries".  I have no idea if any of these are what you want, or if any of these might change something.
When I clicked on "reveal library in finder" earlier on it showed me the copy of the photo library that I made a while ago, sitting right where I know it is on my desktop.  And if I click on that symbol it shows me all the pictures again.  Just like in my regular iPhoto files - all the thumbs are there, but most can't be opened to full sized.
Are we making progress here?  I'm sure this is frustrating to you.  This is just pictures of family.  Even the thumbs are nice to look at.  But this is nothing critical - like work related or anything.
    Thanks.

  • I cannot view images in iphoto - only black screen

I had problems being unable to boot my iMac this week and ended up having to take it to the Apple store where they re-installed the operating system and all seemed fine. Now however, although I can view thumbnails in iPhoto, when I click on them I just get a black screen.
I've checked the images do still exist in the file folders and I had a slideshow running as a screensaver - this still shows the images but I cannot access them through iPhoto.
    Can anyone help?
    Thank you

There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
    1. Permissions in the Library: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
    2. Minor Database corruption: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    3. A Damaged Photo: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). (On iPhoto 11 this option is under the File -> Reveal in Finder.) Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
    4. A corrupted iPhoto Cache: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/Library/ Caches...
    5. A corrupted preference file: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    If none of these help:
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • Some photo's missing in iPhoto only black screen Appears with ! symbol

I am using iPhoto 08 and have around 11000 photos in my Library, about 300 all of a sudden have gone missing. The thumbnail is no longer visible only a black screen with the symbol ! appears. Any advice?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    If that fails:
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Iphoto 9.5.1 shows mpeg-4 files as a thumbnail, but will only show as a black screen when you double click on it, other video files are able to be played and are viewable.  Why?

iphoto 9.5.1 shows mpeg-4 video files as a thumbnail, but will not play the video.  When try to play video it shows as a black screen.  Other video files play ok- (mpeg, .mov).  What do I have to do to view them?   If I use imovie they will play, but I sometime like to view them in iphoto.  It worked before I upgraded to 9.5.1 and 19.9.2 of the operationg system.

Select the thrumbnail of one of the videos and use the File ➙ Reveal in Finder ➙ Original menu option.  That should take you to the original mpeg4 file.
If it does then try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database, followed by Option #1 if needed.

  • Black screen iphoto and flash

Please note this question is about "black screen" in both iPhoto AND Flash.  They are linked in that the symptom appears in both - if I notice in iPhoto then I know that flash videos will also not work; and if I solve it then both are resolved simultaneously.
MacBook Pro Mid2012 OS 10.9.3  iPhoto   Firefox 30.0   (same problem in Safari)  Adobe Flash 14.0.0.125   iPhoto 9.5.1  (different specs to my apple ID because this is happening on my daughters mac book pro).  Never had this problem on my older MacBook Pro.
We have had this problems 3 times (once a month) and keep resolving it but I am not sure why or how!
Sympton:  iPhoto - thumbnails show but when clicked to show full screen the screen is black.  If the photo is flagged then the flag can be seen (in the place you would expect the top left corner of the photo to be).
Firefox - flash videos just show a black screen
Safari - flash videos do not play and suggest that flash player needs updating.  On following the link it goes to http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ and tries to load the page several times before displaying a long error message
    Solution:
The solution is a combination of the following.  Without understanding what the the cause is it is difficult to know which is fixing it:
1     Uninstall Flash with Adobe uninstaller   http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/support/uninstall_flash _player_osx.dmg
2     find a way to download the flash player installer file (can't remember exactly how I did this as this last time I had it in the downloads folder already))
2     Verify and Repair Disk Permissions shows the following
    Repairing permissions for “”Permissions differ on “Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/Safari.help/Contents/Resources/inde x.html”; should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are -rwxr-xr-x .Repaired “Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/Safari.help/Contents/Resources/inde x.html”
    Permissions repair complete
    3     Re-install Flash
4     Restart at every available opportunity
I have in the past also repaired the disk and used iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild the iPhoto library but these are lengthier and don't seem necessary.
Any ideas on what is causing both flash and iPhoto to fail at the same time so that we can fix the underlying problem very much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Paul

A simpler fix now - but I am still not sure of the cause - might be a faulty hard disk - but this doesn't make sense in that it always seems to be related to Safari - so is there a malfunction with Safari.
This morning - same problem fixed by repairing permissions with the disk utility. then a shutdoen and restart.    Log says:
    Repairing permissions for “”Permissions differ on “Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/Safari.help/Contents/Resources/inde x.html”; should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are -rwxr-xr-x .Repaired “Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/Safari.help/Contents/Resources/inde x.html”Group differs on “Library/Printers/InstalledPrinters.plist”; should be 80; group is 0.Permissions differ on “Library/Printers/InstalledPrinters.plist”; should be -rw-rw-rw- ; they are -rw-r--r-- .Repaired “Library/Printers/InstalledPrinters.plist”
    Permissions repair complete
Is this a hard disk malfunction or a safari issue?  All ideas gratefully received.

  • What do I do after Iphoto crashed and will not reload?  I only get a black screen and a circle of rotating bars.

How do I bring up iPhoto after it seemed to crash while I was using it?  All I get now is a black screen with a circle of rotating bars.  I have closed it, and restarted after putting the machine to sleep and after shutting it off altogether; no luck.   Everything else is working fine.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.

  • When I try to enlarge pictures in iPhoto I get a black screen with an triangle with a "!".

My iMac hard drive crashed and I reloaded Lion and applications including iPhoto. I reloaded the iPhoto database from a backup hard drive. When I open iPhoto I can see my pictures in their events groups. However, when I try to enlarge them I get a black screen with an traingle with an "!". How do I correct the problem.

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto gives black screen when I try to use Slideshow or Edit

    Hi:
I have a new Powerbook Pro with Snow Leopard and iLife 09. I can see all of my photos in the library, but when I try to go to full screen view, or try to edit a photo, I get a black screen. For the full screen view, the thumbnails are aligned at the top of the screen if I move the cursor there, but the screen remains black where the photo is supposed to be. I tried rebuilding the library (option + control when launching iPhoto), and deleted the iPhoto plist file in the library - preferences folder, but the problem persists.
    Thanks

Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. +*The original library will be untouched for further attempts at fixing or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.+*

i have iphoto previously installed. running  but when i have synced my iphone4 the iphoto app. cant be launched anymore. a black screen with the hourglass running till it quits automatically.  What should be the problem???

Try the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your HD/User/Home/() Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your HD/User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.

  • Black screens on export  HD Iphotos

I work my photos and my slide shows on Iphoto, then I pass on Aperture, to resume(to take back) slide shows to export them in HD to establish(constitute) on Imovie the movie with videos. I wanted to pass on Aperture altogether but as he(it) is abandoned(given up), I did not wish to put a lot on this software more profoundly. This system gave me satisfaction until recently.
In January, on the basis of a new library(bookcase) grouping(including) that my photos of a journey: 2000 photos and 950 restraints in 10 slide shows (I split to avoid problems further to the size of files), I realized the export of slide shows. Black screens substitute themselves for photos on more than 10 % of photos without any peculiarity ( the same camera).I made numerous tests by creating a new library(bookcase), by validating a sample of my original photos which are in screen black in a new treatment(processing) Iphoto. The problem is dice iphoto in the export 480 in 1080 but correct at the level of the IPhone export.
Identical result(profit) with MacBook Pro of 2014 (mine is of the end of 2009). I tried with another pimp which was still on Mavericks and there, my files are OK in all exports of Iphoto. The problem, this pimp had no Aperture and I cannot import him(it) because is asked the platform Yosemite.
The problem adorned me to be in the compatibility of Yosemite with Iphotos and can being Aperture.
In the Apple store of the Opera in bets they heard about it and indicates me that best is of detailed(retailed) my problem on the site and to wait for a return of Apple which will indicate to me if the correction is next. At the moment, I am blocked(surrounded).

You are not talking to Apple here, only to Apple users.
iPhoto is no longer in development and will not be updated further. It will be replaced with the new Photos app, in the spring.
    Alternatives to iPhoto's slideshow include:
iMovie is on every Mac sold.
    Others, in order of price:
    PhotoToMovie  $49.95
    PulpMotion  $129
    FotoMagico $99
    Final Cut Pro X $299
It's difficult to compare these apps. They have differences in capability - some are driven off templates. some aren't. Some have a wider variety of transitions. Others will have excellent audio controls. It's worth checking them out to see what meets your needs. However, there is no doubt that Final Cut Pro X is the most capable app of them all. You get what you pay for.
