IPhoto Books... no pix on page to old project

Greetings - Have recently upgraded to iLife'11 and iPhoto 9.1.5. All pictures, events, albums, books, etc seem to be present. however previously made books show no photos placed on pages. Again, entire cache of pix for project remain on side to pick from, text from previous book still exists, yet only three photos are placed in book containing 100 pages. Have gone as far as rebuilding iPhoto w/ thumbnails, etc when launching iPhoto, but have seen no change. Any suggestions ?

Then the Library isn damaged. Best solution: Restore from your back up. next best:
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

You can make the collages easily if you have iWork.  Just open a letter sized page in landscape mode and drag the photos onto the page, rotate and postiion as necessary.  Then do a Print ➙ PDF ➙ Save PDF to iPhoto to get a 200 dpi jpeg version of the Pages page into iPhoto.  From there you can add it to your book and use a blank page with the option to have an image as the backbround.
If you have a 3rd party image editor that supports layers you can create the collage with it.

  • Iphoto Book with only 17 pages

Can I make a book with only 17, instead of 20 pages? I'm trying to delete the existing pages 18-20, but I can't figure out how. Or maybe I am forced to have a 20 page book....
    Please advise.

No. The minimum number of pages in an iPhoto 11 book is 20.

  • Size of digital images for reproduction in iPhoto Books

I have been reading comments in this forum and have become confused reading about image size in iphoto books. I have some very old scanned photos saved in tiff format files on an external hard-drive and want to make a book using them. I don't want to compromise the altered quality of these old photos since so many are over 100 years old and were in poor condition when scanned. I corrected them as best I could using Photoshop and saved them them in tiff form in storage. Can I leave them as a tiff (cropped to 4:3ratio) when I import them to iPhoto or do I have to convert them to j-pegs BEFORE importing? I realize that these files are larger than a j-peg of the same photo so the entire 100 page book is quite large. If so will j-peg format make these look worse in the printing? iphoto's instructions skip over this detail. Could some please help me with an answer to this?

    Dognut:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You can use the tiffs. There won't be a problem. The only restriction is Apple can't use CMYK color. I've always used jpgs without a problem. As long as the number of pixels are high you should get good results. The downside to using tiffs is that iPhoto will copy them into the library and will take up a lot of disk space. But you can always delete them from iPhoto when you've ordered and received your book to free up disk space.

  • Iphoto book picture resolution

I am making an Iphoto book and am importing pictures from old libraries. The resolution on the pictures go as low as 500 kb. I am putting 4 pictures to a page, so the pictures are not large. Will that resolution be okay? The pictures appear to be fine and there is no indication that they will show as being of poor quality. I was wondering how low you can go with the resolution. Thank you.

your will see a yellow triangle with an ! in it if the resolutions is too low for the size you have chosen to use.

  • Looking for iPhoto book template for Aperture

I created a photobook in iPhoto and now need to add a few things that iPhoto wont permit ie images in places that are not on the templates. Therefore, I am trying Aperture since it allows me to modify templates. So, I now need to recreate a template in Aperture that is the same as the one I used in iPhoto. To speed everything up, I am looking to see if I can install the templates from iPhoto. If so, that would save me lots of work. Actually, if I could only import the photobook from iPhoto, that would be even better!
So, does anyone know where I can get the templates/themes that are in iPhoto and how do I install them in Aperture?

That is not a possibility - but you can do a page layout in Aperture (or any other program) and print it to PDF using the send PDF to iPhoto option to send an option of it to iPhoto and then add it to the iPhoto book as a full page photo

    Start with Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file delete the contents the following folder:
    User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: For Mavericks, 10.9,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
where you can check the Show Library Folder checkbox.
If that doesn't help continue with:

  • PDF text pages in iPhoto books

I'm not sure that this is a problem. I just want reassurance before I click the ORDER BOOK button and buy the iPhoto book I have created.
I have imported PDF pages of text into the book, as I was able to get more control over the text layout that way. However, when I proof a PDF-text page, it looks more blurry and pixellated than standard, typed-on-the-page text, as if the resolution is not quite so high. It is perfectly legible, just a shade less sharp.
Is this likely to be a resolution matter with my printer, or will the text be marginally more blurry in the printed book's PDF pages, too? If blurry is the answer, is there anything I can do before ordering the book to get the text looking just as sharp on the PDF pages as on the non-PDF, direct-to-page, text?
    Many thanks in advance.

In PS under Edit->Color Settings Working Spaces set Grayscale to Dot Gain 20% and set the RGB menu to sRGB IEC61966-2.1. This is for future uses.
Now open each file in PS CS2 from withing iPhoto, go to the Image->Mode menu and select RGB. Save the changes, Command+S, and that's it. The photo will then appear normally in iPhoto.
Here's how to use Photoshop from within iPhoto:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
If you ever do any scanning of B/W photos always scan as color.

Trying to delete pages 21-24 on iPhoto book but "remove pages" option grayed out and pressing delete button not doing anything.  These extra pages resulted from using Autoflow and now we can't seem to get rid of them.  Help!

    Good morning Old Toad.
    I did as you suggested:
    1) Booted from install CD.
    2) Ran Disk Utilities on internal hard drive--no repairs necessary. For good measure, did the same thing on external drive. Also no repairs necessary.
    3) Checked software update--no updates found. About this Mac said I was already running 10.4.7. For good measure, I downloaded the latest and installed it. Since it let me run the install, I'm not sure if I installed something new or reinstalled what I already had.
    4) I rebooted from CD, ran disk utilities, ran repair disk--no repairs necessary. Repaired permissions and a lot of permissions repaired.
    5) Tried to delete the files and the same old thing happened: kernel panic. The specific message:
    panic(cpu 0 caller 0x00102A08): jnl: transaction too big (1587712 >= 1572352 bytes, bufsize 8192, tr 0x29f1fb0 bp 0x2801de40)
So there's no change in my status.
I'm trying to delete the files because:
    A) They already take .5 Gb.
    B) I can't get rid of them ever. If I move the problem files to a different folder, I can only do one successful drag-and-drop backup to the external drive until the "new" thumb segments become unerasable just like the previous versions and crash the system.
    C) I can't even "just" drag and drop every file/folder except the thumbs, because that ends up crashing the system as well. So I have to drag and drop every file/folder in the iPhoto hierarchy individually. Which makes me less inclined to backup, which defeats the purpose of a backup.
    D) After the iPhoto fiasco I'm just crabby about all the Apple screw-ups I'm experiencing and I want to get them fixed.
Thanks for your help. Any additional suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Finding old iPhoto book templates

Is there a secret location for old templates (storybook) for creating books in iPhoto?

  • Iphoto book won't submit - hangs up on map page

I created a 52 page iphoto book in Old World format and created a map page with 4 locations in 2 continents. iphoto hangs up on this page when I try to purchase book. If I eliminate some of locations on map page, or eliminate map page totally, iphoto will allow book to be submitted. Brought this to attention at Genius Bar -they also re-created problem on one of their computers. They also tried other book formats and also had same problem with multiple locations in different continents. Any fixes or do I have to wait for iphoto upgrade?

There's a way around this possibly. See if you can create a PDF for previewing by starting a print job of the book and using the PDF->Save as PDF. If you can create a PDF of the book with the maps the following is a way to get the maps into iPhoto as image files:
1 - open the PDF in Preview, go to the first map page in the PDF (note the Page number) type Command+P.
2 - in the Print window click on the Pages radio button and put in the page number in both fields.
3 - click on the PDF button at the bottom and select *+Save PDF to iPhoto option+.* This will create a jpg file of the page and import it into iPhoto.
4 - repeat for each map in the PDF book.
5 - add the map jpgs to the book in iPhoto.
6 - go the the first map page in the book, change the format to the one that uses a photo for the full page background.
7 - drag the appropriate map photo onto that page. Do the same for the other maps.
f you want to increase the dpi of those map page jpgs you will need to edit the Automator workflow "Save PDF to iPhoto.workflow" so that the dpi is 300 (the maximum needed for books). That workflow is located in the HD/Library/PDF Services folder. I would change the dpi to 300 and save the changed workflow as a new one titled "Save PDF to iPhoto 300 PPI.workflow" in the same location.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • Can I make an iPhoto book that is only 10 pages long?

I want to make a hardcover iPhoto book, but only have 15 photos to go into the book, so 20 pages is too many pages. Can anyone advise? Does iPhoto let you make a book that is less than 20 pages or do you have to fill that whole 20 pages in order to make the book? Thx

You don't have to fill those extra pages. Pick a blank page layout but not the all gray layout. That requires a photo for the background and you can't order the book unless it's been filled with a photo. Most of the themes have a layout that is essentially blank. Some, however, have the theme's colors which might not look good as a filler page.
If you have such a theme you can select a page with a photo background and use a blank, white image file to make that page a blank, white page or whatever you would like on the page. Create the page, landscape, in a text editor or other applications and use the Print->PDF->Save PDF to iPhoto menu option. This will create a jpg image file of that page and it's layout and import it into iPhoto where you can add it to the book.

  • Creating iphoto book and can't seem to view/ work on only one page at a time.

I am creating an iPhoto book and can't seem to view/work on only one page at a time.  The Navigator, that allows you to focus on a part of the page is actually 1 1/2 pages in size so 1 1/2 pages are in view when trying to work on one page.  What am I doing wrong or how can I fix this.  It is very distracting viewing half of a previous page when trying to create a new page and write a story to go with the related pictures.

My Navigator seems to be to large.  It covers 1 1/2 pages while in the training information it shows as the size of one page.  Is there a way to adjust the size of the Navigator?
You can hover the mouse over the left border of the Navigator - then the cursor will turn into a resize cursor and you can drag the border and make the Navigator panel smaller by enlarging the source list.
Or drag the lower right corner of the iPhoto window and shrink the appliaction window. This will only make the navigator smaller - the source list and information panel will stay the same size.
