IPhoto bouncing but not launching solution

Just thought I would share this (painful) experience with you folks so nobody will need to go through the frustrations I went though.
I got a new Macbook (white, 13"). Being the control freak I am, first thing I did was to do a clean re-install of OSX Tiger from the original discs (v10.4.10). This was so I only had what I wanted on my notebook, and not other needless stuff.
After the welcome screen, first thing I did, without starting any apps, was to run software update. This led to installation of the iLife updates (iPhoto 7.02 and iMovie 7.01). All was hunky dory, rebooted...
After the reboot, clicking on iPhoto and iMovie resulted in nothing. The icon would just bounce a few times, and... nothing. The application would not launch. This is one of the (many!) threads on Apple's support forums which shows this issue is not a unique one:
discussions.apple.com/me...=5319234#5319234
Yes, yes. I repaired permissions, deleted plist file, etc etc. No joy. Rung Apple Support - completely clueless. To make things worse, none of the forums provided solutions to this problem.
What was the solution? I re-installed OSX again (grr....), but this time, instead of installing the iLife patches straight away, I opened iPhoto, iMovie FIRST; exited, then ran software update, applied the latest patches, rebooted and waa-laa... no problems.
My gripe with this:
1. What if your "typical user" did what I initially did? What a quandary they would be in!
2. How can Apple make such a basic mistake? Won't there be a appreciable number of power users out there that would have done what I did, and applied patches on the first install?
I hope anyone who have had this problem find this post useful.

If you hadn't reinstalled the system this wouldn't have happened. If you didn't want certain things on the MacBook couldn't you have just deleted them? If it were the extra language modules you could have used Monolingual. The MBs setup to work right out of the box with no further installations. Most users do just that, start using the MacBook right out of the box and bring over their user files, etc. either manually or with Migration Assistant. You're the first I can remember with this specific problem posting.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Apps in dock bouncing but not launching.

I have second account on my PowerBook. And this problem is only on this second limited account.
It was working five until few weeks ago. The problem is "Apps in dock are bouncing but not launching".
Apps like Mail, Safari, Firefox, iPhoto, iTunes, Skype, QuickTime, Vlc, Address Book, iCall and even Google Notifier on the top Bar. I can click on them again again but nothing. Only way to open them is to Log Out and Log in again. But in this case not all of them are working yet. I have tried with Apple Apps to delete in Library/Preferences - com.apple. .... but it doesn't work.
I know the easiest way to solve it would be just create this second account again but I wanna find out what's going on here.

"com.apple.launchservices.plist" Could not find it there (in Preferences on second account) I found it only in Preferences on my *Main account*. So tried to copy it on to my second account but it did not help.
I know it is maybe not at least 10% free al the time but I had no problem with it until now.
Another thing is I deleted "com.apple.launchservices.plist" on my Main account Restarted Computer and it did not created new "com.apple.launchservices.plist" and everything works ok on my Main Account. Very confusing.
Only common thing both accounts now have is "com.apple.LaunchServices.QuarantineEvents". Tried to delete it and it Created it self again as I expected.
Even non Apple App *"Google Notifier"* is not launching in top bar.

  • IPhoto '11 does not launch AT ALL

I've tried fixing permissions, using BatChmod, deleting the appropriate .plist files, reloading the software (and the software upgrade again), and iPhoto '11 does not launch. It shows up under 'Force Quit Applications' but does not show up anywhere else.
I had no problems using iPhoto '09.
Now I've only been using Macs for 18 years, but I have to say this is one of the worst Mac software experiences I've encountered.
Are there any plans to fix this program?

Some users had good luck by removing any 3rd Party QuikTime Plugins. Apparently there is a compatibility issue.

I can't load pictures to online site... IPhoto works but not aperture3.  I have edited photos that I exported to an external drive but they will still not load to Walgreens for printing.  Does anyone know what I can do?

Are you shooting RAW? Are you exporting masters or versions? Is there a size limitation on the Walgreens site?

  • IPhoto 08' will not launch after double clicking icon in dock

I recently had to reinstall the Tiger OS and did so through Archive and Reinstall option. After everything was back up and running I installed all updates available through Software Update. But, iPhoto does not launch. The icon bounces up and down twice and then stops... nothing happens after that. I tried looking for the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file and could not find it in the preference folder. Funny thing is that all the other iLife apps work just fine.
Any ideas not involving reinstalling iPhoto through the CD? I just moved and am still trying to located the iLife CD.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    Start with the troubleshooting basics:
    1. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
    2. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
    3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • Video (mov)  in iPhoto 8 library seen in iPhoto 8 but not iMovie 8.

After installing iLife 08, I can see my photos and videos in iPhoto 08, and the videos (mov from Kodak V570) play fine in QT. However, in iMovie 08, I cannot see all of my videos in the event library (though the manual leads me to believe I should be able to see them). I can see some of my videos (the ones that I had on the computer when I installed iMovie 08). I cannot see any video that I imported into the iPhoto library after initial install from within the iMovie 08 event library. If I try to import the video, all of the video files within the iPhoto library are grayed out. I can import the videos (mov) just fine into iMovie06.
Much discussion on this topic within the iMovie08 forum. No solutions, though. A person suggested that the topic be raised in the iPhoto forum, since the iPhoto library in iPhoto08 is the library for iMovie08. Appreciate any help.

I have exactly the same problem as well... I upgraded from iMovie HD to iMovie'08. I can only see one video clip from my iPhoto library but I have over hundreds of these clips... not sure why. I am using *.AVI video files.

  • IMOVIE 08 - Bounce but not opening?

    Morning all,
I have upgraded to iLIFE 08, and have come to use iMOVIE, but it does not seem to start. The icon appears in the dock and bounces, but thats as far as it gets.
All other programs seem fine, and iPHOTO has upgraded database etc, but would I do any harm, by trying to upgrade again just in case there was a hitch?
    Or
    Does anybody have any suggestions?
Never used iMOVIE before, so bit gutted its not wanting to come out and play at the moment
    Thanks
    Rich

I believe this has already been addressed before.

  • Photo stream is showing up in iphoto recent but not web and I am not able to join the shared photo stream.  all of my software is updated.  can someone tell me how to get photo stream in the web source list? thanks!

Can someone help me get Photo Stream to appear under Web in the iPhoto Source List? I have updated all my software.  iPhoto 11, Mac OS X 10.7.5  All of my preferences are checked.  I am able to see the shared Photo Stream on my iPad, but not my Mac.  The Mac iPhoto photos from the shared photo stream are appearing in the Photo Stream (under Recent), but I thought they would appear as a shared Photo Stream in its own file/album (like on the iPad and iPhone)  - labeled with the shared Photo Stream's title.  Is this supposed to happen on the Mac?  Thanks!

So you are saying for it to do what i want: shared photo stream to appear in web then i need to upgrade.
    Yes
Does that mean i purchase the new software an it's not just an update?
    Yes
Your profile indicates your running 10.7.5.  For shared Photo Streams you need to be running 10.8.2 or later: The following is from  iCloud: Photo Stream FAQ
What do I need to use Photo Stream?
To use Photo Stream, including Shared Photo Streams, you need an iCloud account, compatible devices, and up-to-date software:  iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 6.0 or later Mac with OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.2 or later and iPhoto 9.4 or Aperture 3.4 or later
So you'll need to upgrade to Mt. Lion.
iPhoto requirements are free updates for iPhoto '11

  • IPhoto update but not to 9.5.1

I have an old version of iPhoto (7.1.5) which is no longer supported for making books, etc.  I would like to upgrade to a more current version but am still on 10.8.5.  Is there a way to upgrade  my iPhoto but not to the most current version?

Purchase an iLife '11 DVD - Amazon or eBay are potential sources and install iLike '11 form it and update to the lateest version for your OS - 9.4.3

  • IPhoto 4 will not launch

I ran the latest software updates from Apple and now my iPhoto 4 won't launch. I just have the spinning wheel. Can you walk me through the steps to fix this?

A corrupt album can cause iPhoto 4 to just sit there with the SWOD. If the repair of disk permissions does not help try the following:
1 - Download and run BatChmod on the V4 library folder with the settings shown here, substituting your account name for mine.
2 - Determining if the SWOD (spinning wheel of death) at launch is caused by a corrupt album.
1 - move the Albums folder and the AlbumData.xml file to the Desktop
2 - launch iPhoto. If it launches OK then it's a bad album.
3 - to determine which one(s) is the bad apple (pun intended) move, one at a time, each album folder and it's associated data file back into the new Albums folder that was created inside the iPhoto Library folder.
4 - Launch iPhoto. If the launch is OK, that one was good and try the same with the next one.
5 - If the launch gives you the SWOD, remove that last album folder and it's data file.
6 - repeat with each album folder and data file until you've checked them all.

  • Mail icon bounces, but never launches. HELP!

Dear People Who Know Macs Better Than Me,
Please help! Yesterday I was trying to back up my Mail (Home/Library/Mail), and when I saw that it was as big as it was, I tried compressing/archiving the Mail folder using the (Create archive of "Mail") when you right-click on any item.
BIG mistake. As I was doing that, my computer froze mid-process and I had to force quit out of Finder. I ended up having to force-restart the computer from holding down the power key (since other force-restart options don't work anymore). I should have never tried to archive by creating an archive, I should have just copied the files directly over to another hard drive, which I did later. My computer froze yet again... choked on a file called "173447.emix or .emlx", did I want to continue copying? I hit yes and then the copy/task window showed no further progress. It would not quit process thereafter, not even if I hit that little X up top, and was instead frozen. I had to force quit out of Finder yet again. Totally digressing, but you know how it is. I'm trying to document everything for you here.
Fortunately I have a backup, but it doesn't have everything from the last two weeks. I did do a manual backup where I dragged all folders inside Mail over from one drive to another.
So, I've been unable to launch Mail. The icon does its perfunctory dance in the dock, the Mail menu appears at the top of the screen, but nothing else appears, and then it goes dormant and never launches. I have watched Activity Monitor during this process and indeed Mail does launch and appears on Activity Monitor, but then it subsequently and almost immediately quits.
What file do you think I damaged? Was it the Mail app itself? Or do you think it was a preference file? Please help! Thanks in advance!

Dear Golden Shoes, thank you very much for that simple fix! After restarting, Finder froze so I restarted with all external hard drives removed and Mail launched this time. Of course none of my passwords or other account settings were saved, but I can easily figure it out. THANK YOU!

  • Some photos in iphoto library, but not in iphoto

iphoto 5, i have random photos in various folders that used to show up in iphoto, but after a plist issue and rebuild (which mostly went fine), these photos don't show up in the iphoto library or app. as an example, i have no photos showing up for september through december, 2003, although the iphoto library folders in finder show probably 150 pictures during those months. they're just not visible via iphoto, and in fact the filter-by-calendar function just shows those months totally grayed-out. i can't 'add to library' on these pics, because iphoto tells me the originating folder is invalid (meaning, i assume, that it won't 'import' from the exact folder it's going to import into, or something like that. any ideas on how to just tell iphoto to find all the non-duplicate images already in its own folders, and make them part of the 'library'? thx.

I'm having the same issue. I just got a new G5 tower and Leopard. I had a G4 iMac Flatscreen. I imported my iPhoto app.. got rid of plist, press option when I started iPhoto.. so it asks me to choose a library, I chose my iPhoto Library. I have well over 5000 pictures in there, but iPhoto only shows my first 167 pics! Hmmmm???

  • Duplicates in Shared Photostream in iOS Photos, Mac OS X iPhoto, AppleTV, but not iCloud Web

Just started using the shared Photostream feature today, and we noticed that the first shared Photostream we tried duplicated all the photos that were shared if viewed from iPhoto or AppleTV. The web site for the shared Photostream does have exactly the right pictures with no duplicates.
All versions of the software mentioned are the latest.
Background: I did have to turn on Photostream for iPhoto for the user, and the user had never used iPhoto Photostream before. We might have tried sharing once, then cancelled to get a better list of email addresses before sending out the invitation, but we didn't hit OK, only Cancel.

You know you're not talking to Apple here, right? Only other users, just like you.
iPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback is the route to Apple.
