IPhoto broken??

OK, am a bit confused about what has happened, and not sure if this is a recognised problem or not.
I have an iMac running leopard with iPhoto '08.
I bought a MacBook Pro running snow leopard with iPhoto '09.
I shared some of the photo library onto the laptop. This caused an issue with the iMac's iPhoto library, with it saying this library cannot be used with this version of iPhoto. Following on-line advice I corrected that problem, so I now have access to the photos, however, many of them have now been altered to much lower resolution. This happened a while ago, something that I kept meaning to get around to fix but haven't got around to.
I just updated the iMac to snow leopard so I can install iLife '11. On restart, the desktop photo now also has a low resolution, as has the album that it contains - this wasn't the case before updating the OS.
I have a time capsule so assume I have the photos stored in their original resolution somewhere. They are also backed up on a separate external hard drive.
Can I fix the problem? And if so, how? And will installing iLife '11 cause more problems?

Key question:
I shared some of the photo library onto the laptop. This caused an issue with the iMac's iPhoto library, with it saying this library cannot be used with this version of iPhoto. Following on-line advice I corrected that problem,
How did you correct that problem?
however, many of them have now been altered to much lower resolution.
This is the kind of thing that happens if you import one Library to another. Did you?
I suspect your best route is to restore a known-good back up. Don't upgrade to 11 until you've sorted out the Library.

  • IPhoto broken - Empty window when I open the application - Help needed

    Hi Guys,
Since my upgrade to Snow Leopard my iPhoto 09 has been completely broken. What I get when I start it up is an empty window. No pictures on the right pane and no menus on the left pane. I read many threads about iPhoto issues, and so I have tried to rebuild the library, reinstall iPhoto from the disk I got with my mac. Still the same problem: On startup, iPhoto opens with a completely blank window. All I have are the three buttons at the bottom left side of the window (+, info and enlarge). Only if I click "+" to add a new album the menus on the left pane (events, photos...) appear. A few clicks on these menus and iPhoto crashes. All this, done with a new, clean library. I moved the old one, and keep it for the day I'll get iPhoto to work again. Hope you guys can help. This is painfully frustrating.

    Thanks for help Terrence
I am using Suitcase Fusion 2 and just activitating Helvetica Neue in Suitcase seemed to fix this problem I have had for several months.
I highly recommend doing the activation in Suitcase instead of just droping it into the System Fonts folder. This will allow for Suitcase to activate or deactivate the font. If you put the font into one of your folders, Suitcase can not deactivate, which might be necessary if your job uses a different version of Helvetica Neue.

  • Iphoto Broken HELP!

I have a Macbook Air MAC OS X Version 10.6.8. The software up to date. I cannot find the version of iphoto I am workign with because it will not open. My problem is that I click on iphoto, it begins to open and then I just get the loading white wheel and it never stops trying to load. I have asked many people and tried to find online how to fix this but I cannot. I cannot lose the photos in my iphoto. I do not know what to do. Does anyone know how to fix this? I am in Italy and cannot contact apple. Please help!

    1. Make a back up.
    2.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto broken in Leopard

i have installed Leopard on both a MacBook and a G4 12-inch Powerbook, and in both cases iPhoto fails to open. the version loaded seems to be 2.0.1, which seems very old. in both machines i did an erase-install, so any old versions would have been wiped out.
    any ideas?

    Ed:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. iPhoto 2 is not supported by Leopard. Therefore, in order to recover your library as a working entity you'll have to purchase iLife 08. If you don't want to purchase iLife you'll have to move all of the full sized image files out of the iPhoto 2 library folder and put them is another folder. If you have duplicate file names that will be a difficult prospect. However, I think you can follow the procedure in Tutorial #1 to write the keywords to the actual files and then use iView to Batch Rename each file to it's Capture Date choosing whatever date format you'd like. I recommend you use YYYY-MM-DD-001.jpg format.
After renaming you can easily find the large files in the library folder and subfolder with a search criteria like Size greater than 100 KB. This will exclude the thumbnail files and you can move the files to a new folder and use a different image management application on them.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Software Update hanging - iPhoto broken as result - how to fix

So I was running software update on LION 10.7.3, which found 3 of the latest updates for Itunes, iPhoto, and Garage band. It downloaded the updates fine, but then hung for hours when "moving items into place" toward the end of the update process installation. I presumed it was not going anywhere based upon previous experience with software update always finishing properly, so I forced quit Software update and shut down. Shut down hung, and I had to force shut down with the power button, but reboot was fine back into my user account.
So I tried running Software update again thinking it would know what happened and try to fix the issue, but it just hung halfway through the searching for updates phase.
Also, my iPhoto was crashing immediately upon opening it. Itunes and Garage band opened fine, but without the latest updates applied.
    HOW I FIXED IT:
I booted my computer into SAFE MODE - hold down the shift key after the Apple startup chime, and keep holding it down until you see the Apple. Then a little progress bar will show up at the bottom letting you know you are in safe mode.
Then I ran software update and everything proceeded just fine.
Rebooted and everything back to normal.
    Hope this helps.

Pull out memory card and and battery, wait 5 mins and put the battery back in - not the memory card. Try powering on with and without the charger connected.
I would guess the three finger reset applies to your device too ( actually four finger if you count the power button). - press green call button, * , 3 while powering on. Keep holding in those buttons till you're past the handshake logo screen. This will delete everything on your phonememory, but might be worth doing as a last resort before sending it in.
You should read the " pool of knowledge" post by psychomania too. Specially if you get your phone on - might need a reinstall of the fw.
And the battery is of course not discharged?

  • Iphoto broken down- how to fix it?

When I try to start my iphoto, it will load forever without success...
I also tried the iphoto library manager, the manager complains that it can't open iphoto either so the rebuilt was aborted.
    Help pls

  • Update broke iPhoto - crashes during import.

It seems the update recently has rendered my iPhoto broken. Now when i try to import my photos from my camera iPhoto crashes. When i come back in it says I have photos waiting to import then crashes again and the import amount increases each time.
    Can anyone help?

Use Image Capture to upload the files to a folder on the desktop and then reformat the card with the camera. Take a couple of test shots and see if you can import them. If it's still bad, run Disk Utility and repair disk permissions anddownload and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, putting your administrator login name, long or short, in the owner and group sections. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field.
    Try importing again.
If still no go, boot into another account on your Mac and try in a library there. If it works there then it's something to do with your account. If it doesn't work, the next step would be to reinstall iPhoto. If you do try a reinstall of iPhoto you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder.
Once installed run the iPhoto updaters in this order:
    1 - 6.04
    2 - 6.0.5 (requires 6.0.4 to run)
    3 - 6.0.6 (requires 6.0.5 to run)
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Problem iMovie Component Quick Time HD

Hello, I had installed Snow Leopard and I update my iMac to Lion last month.
I try to open iMovie, but I hava a popup message before open the iMovie app, the pop up message says:
The QuickTime components necessary to view, edit, import, and export several kinds of movies are not installed. These components are included with the iMovie installer; please re-install.
I try to reinstall QuickTime, iMovie... but I have the same message. I don't have the DVD install of Lion because I purchased it on the App Store.
Do yo know how can I solve this problem? because when I try to optimize a video, I have a problem too.
    Thanks!

    Problem resolved:
    - I use the DVD of applications of my Snow Leopard and I installed the iMovie again (an old version)
    - But my iPhoto broken with the new installation
    - I use a backup of my time machine to restore the iPhoto
    - I updated the iMovie from the iMovie Updater
    - Now, everything is working fine
    Thanks!!

  • IPhoto events view broken after import, images missing

I'm running the latest iPhoto on a 10.8.2 Retina MacBook Pro and experience some strange import problems since the end of last month.
My library holds more then 26.000 images right now and whenever I try to import some new images by dragging them from Finder to the iPhoto library the images (and videos) get imported... but when I try to view the event afterwards it doesn't open and the scrolling of the complete events view is broken. The scrollbar moves but thumbnails of events don't! I'm not able to use the events view anymore after a try to open such broken event.
When I use the regular photos view (the 2nd item in the left menu) I can see and use these new images... until I quit and restart iPhoto. Afterwards many images are missing – see http://cl.ly/JrjF for an example. I can delete those broken events... but not empty the trash afterwards. It just hangs while purging all entries.
    Has anyone experienced this already?
I'm importing iPhone images uploaded to the DropBox "Camera Uploads" folder. But I can't believe it has to do with anything related to this.
I've also disabled the Photostream feature (not the shared ones) in iPhoto because I got tired of splitted events due to Photostream missing some images now and then. Maybe it has to do with that disabled feature. I'll try to reenable it after restoring my 5 days old backup (120GB) a second time now.
Thanks for your help... let's hope I can solve this.

This sounds like a damaged database.
    Try this test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
If it's not then back to your main Library:

  • Can I safely use the Finder's "Get Info" feature to choose "Select a New Original" or "Delete the Alias" to take care of one broken alias that's inside my iPhoto '08 Originals folder?

This alias is not in the Modified or Data folder.  I've read warnings to never change anything in iPhoto through Finder, yet the Finder options look helpful.  However, if they are certain to cause trouble, what other method will get rid of this alias? By the way, this alias is likely the result of changing to a Referenced library a while back (once I found out that was a bad idea I switched back to Managed and purged the problem photos caused by this)  Thanks so much for your help.

What system version and iPhoto versions are you running?  If old enough you may be able to use AliasHerder | Rorohiko Workflow Resources to repair the broken alias files in the library (that is if the source files are available).

Restore from your back up is the most obvious way forward.
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to rebuild the thumbnails. It can take 3 or 4 goes for this to work

  • Tried "everything" and LOTS of iPhoto 6 thumbnails still broken

I have the "Gray" Thumbnail problem in spades on BOTH my wife's and my PowerBooks running 10.4.6. As per many other postings, various Thumbnails gray with exclamation mark, and they will not link to photo on a double-click. I currently have just over 10k photos with approximately 10% displaying the problem. My wife's system has about 8k photos, with about 40% broken! THATS A LOT TO RE-IMPORT and a LOT of meta-data to loose...
    I Have:
    * Repaired Permissions (Multiple Times)
    * Rebuilt iPhoto at startup (Multiple Times)
    * Rebuilt iPhoto using iPhoto Library Manager (Multiple Times)
    * Tried a new iPhoto Library, which worked but a couple of hundred photos do not a library make...
    * Checked for the missing Color Sync file recommended in one posting.
BOTTOM LINE: NONE of the above one of helped repair our libraries.
Are there any NEW or revelatory suggestions or recipes to solve this obviously wide-spread problem, that I haven't listed above or might have missed?
    Thanks in advance! SRJaynes

Hi, SRJ. Sorry to hear that both of you are having the problem.
    - Did you move or reorganize photos in your iPhoto library? Rebuilding and many of the other methods won't help if users manually move folders or photos around inside the library.
    - Do you have the preference to copy photos into your library or do you keep them in an external folder and simply let iPhoto link to them?
    - Usually people just let the library start in the Pictures folder of their account and then hook up their cameras and let pictures download. They might edit the pictures in iPhoto, create albums, order a few books, etc. I'm not suggesting you stay within these narrow lines (hey I don't), but it would help people on the board understand the problem better if you could detail anything unusual that you do that could have triggered a known problem.
    - What kind of images do you import? RAW (what kind?), JPG? Any other types?
    - Anything that the images that don't appear might have in common? e.g. they were all edited with some application, or they were all portrait images, or all were used in some album, book, anything?

  • I just upgraded to Yosemite. Iphoto is now broken.  Upon upgrade receiving error "This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled."

I just upgraded to Yosemite. Iphoto is now broken.  Upon upgrade receiving error "This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled."

Perform the following, stopping with the first one which works:
    1. Open the Mac App Store's Purchases tab. If you're prompted to accept iPhoto into your Apple ID, do so.
    2. Move it out of the Applications folder(it may need to be put into the Trash temporarily), and then see if you can download it for free from its individual product page.
    3. Click here and contact Apple.

  • The iPhoto is not working...  Program is broken...

When i start iphoto it's not working and it says the program is broken... What can i do?

    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.

  • Broken images in photo stream in iPhoto on iMac

I don't know where these images are coming from but they look like broken images from the internet. I can't delete them because they are on my photostream. I've reset my photo stream on my other devices but the broken images are still there and it has maxed out my capacity of 1000 pictures. I hope this makes sense and any help is appreciated.
    Thank you!

    OSX version 10.8.5
    iPhoto version: 9.4.3
With these versions you cannot see the contents posted on IOS 7.0.4 devices by the persons invited to the stream. You will only be able to see the photos streamed by the owner.
If you want to see the photos added by the subscribers to the stream, you need to upgrade to Mavericks and iPhoto 9.5.1. Mt. Lion does not support the new shared photo streams of IOS 7.0.4 fully.
