Iphoto- Can't see some photos

An 'i' on a black screen won't allow me to see some of my photos. How do I get rid of it?

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
2. Download <a href="http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/"><b><u>iPhoto Library Manager</b></u></a> and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • IPhoto can't see my photos

I had a hard drive directory problem after filling my HD to 99.9% full. iPhoto now can't see my photo's. The iPhoto library is there, complete with originals, alterations, etc, but when iPhoto opens, it says that there are 0 pictures. I used option+iphoto and selected the folder again, as well as moving the folder and selecting it from another location, and iPhoto opens it and says 0 pictures.
I tried rebuilding the database, which it does very quickly, reopens and says 0 pictures.
But I know the pictures are there because they are in the originals folder (as verified with preview) and they are in the date archived folders as well.
    What should I do?

    Cane,
so far you have done all the correct steps. iPhoto unfortunately cannot read the data files in your library folder(they are probably corrupt from whatever happened to your HD) and so it tells you there are 0 files.
The next step is to create a new library:
How many images do you have in your library?
Do you mind losing albums, keywords, comments?
    If not...
    close iPhoto
-drag the iPhoto Library folder to the desktop
-launch iPhoto and create a new library
-double click the iPhoto Library folder on the desktop to open it
-the two main folders you will need to import are the Original folder and the Modified folder (only if you want to import the edited images).
-the Originals folder has all your originals photos unedited. the Modified folder has all images that you have edited, rotated, cropped, etc.
-Drag these two folders to the desktop
-If you want to save the edited image, find it in the roll in the Modified folder and drag it into the roll of the same name in the Originals folder. It will replace the originals and now will be the original.
-If you don't care to save any edited images, then don't import the Modified folder into iPhoto or don't bother replacing the edited image with the original image like I just described.
-If you import the Originals folder into iPhoto you will have all your originals in their named rolls.
-If you import the Originals and Modified folders into iPhoto, you will have all of the being in the originals folder in the finder. The roll with the same name as the other will have a _1 appended to it's name (in the finder)
-the roll from the originals will be next to the same roll from the Modified folder within iPhoto. You can then delete any of the images from there if you want.
I know this might sound confusing but it really isn't.
Get back if any of this sounds like something you might want to do.

  • Why can I see some photos in iphoto just fine, but then I will drag something in, edit it, and when I go back later it is not in photos or events. If I search my computer, I can find it, but it doesn't show up in iphoto. Yet other photos show up fine!

I am completely confused by this. Should all photos loaded into iphoto show up? What makes some different from others? Does it matter if they are on the desktop first, straight off the camera, or sent to me via email?? Why should they be different in any way? I just worked on 2 differnt photos - one was sent to me via email, placed on the desktop and dragged into iphoto. It shows up as an event.  The other was sent via email, saved directly from the email to iphoto - I went in and edited it and now it is nowhere to be found. Help!!!!

In your post here you say:
But I can find the photo when desperate by searching the computer through another system. When I find the photo, it has all the iphoto edits made, but it is NOT in iphoto.
What "other system" are you using to search? And, when you find the Photo, where is it?
Storing files in folders is not using a Photo program at all, it's just using the file manager for the job. You can do this on your Mac just as easily as on your Windows box, with the same advantages (it's easy to understand) and limitations (it's inflexible, limited and treats your photos the same way as it treats your text files.)
iPhoto is a different kind of program alright, and once you finish the learning curve - and for most folks, that's not very long - you may see some additional advantages over storing files in folders. Maybe you won't. It's not for evertbody, but frankly, "if all your friends" can "never find any photos they are looking for" when iphoto offers far more ways to manage, arrange, categorise and seach for your photos than the file manager does, then perhaps you need to look closely at your friends
Seriously: I post this for folks who are getting to know iPhoto for the first time. It's just one way of using the app, but it does demonstrate what I mean by being more flexible than the file manager:
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums exensively. I title the pics broadly.
    I keyword on a
    Who
    What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 39+k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a  typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
    File -> New Smart Album
    set it to 'All"
    title contains Seattle
    keyword is mountain
    keyword is snow
    rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
    New Smart Album
    Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
    Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John  to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.

  • I can't see some photos

I saved to my HD many pages from the Web containing photos and now that I look back at it, after weeks or months (and I think in some cases, just the same day) I realize that many do not have the photos. It has everything else; text, links, etc but not the photos. Instead it has a tiny blue square with a question mark in the middle (and no, I can't click on it).
    I'm a photographer. I visit a site called modelmayhem (www.modelmayhem.com).
I don't know if I have this also on other sites. I don't think so.
I use Safari but I had this also in the past when I was using Internet Explorer.
    I do File-->save as-->web archive
(I have only 2 choices anyway with OS X this or save as page source)
Also, on some pages there that contains 20 photos, I would see a few (maybe 5-6 or maybe 12 or so) but not the rest.
So some photos I can see and some not, although they are on the same page, downloaded the same day, that's not logical.
    Why can't I see something I downloaded ?
PS: I have other pages, from other sites that I downloaded, and while the sites don't exist anymore, I can still SEE the pages I saved. (of course if I click on anything, a link for example, I will get some error message) but I can see the photos and text that was on that page.)

once I save/copy the picture on a disc is it permanent ? will I be able to see it even if they remove the photo from the Web ?
I understand that when I save a photo or page on my HD I only copy the link and when the photo or page is removed I won't be able to see it.
Also when I click on a page with a photo that was on my HD, it will show no image just text, if I'm not connected to the internet. But once I'm connected it will show it.
So saving a page with photos on your HD actually doesn't mean a thing; your page is not saved ! meaning you can't see it whenever you want, even years from now. If they remove the page, you won't see anything (just text and sometimes not even that).
So again, once I save/copy the picture on a disc is it permanent ? will I be able to see it even if they remove the photo from the Web ?
Maybe I'm naive but once it is on a disc I should see what is on the disc, just like I watch today a VHS tape with "The Odd Couple" or "Taxi" although these shows are not on the air, the stations doesn't even exist anymore but it's all irrelevant because I COPYED the show, it is physically on my tape and therefore I can see it anytime I want. Isn't it the same with a disc ?
In other words is there a difference between saving something on your HD and saving it on a disc ?

  • Can't see some photos in Organizer - Photoshop 9

In Organizer, I am using the "Folder Location" display view. I imported some photos from a folder by doing the following: I right clicked on the folder from which I wanted to import the photos and then left clicked on "Import to Organizer." When the process was done, I then clicked on "Show All." With that folder highlighted, only the thumbnails of some of the photo files from that folder appear (that folder highlighted) on the Orgnaizer screen. Other thumbanils of photos in that folder do not appear on the screen. I can verify this by right clicking on the folder in question and then left clicking on "Reveal in Explorer" which shows all the photo files in the folder in question. Also, no "Keyword Tags" are checked. The photos that do not appear from the folder in question are ones that have copies in other folders.
    1) What could be causing this problem of some photos in a folder not appearing in the Organizer screen using the "Folder Location" display view and that folder being highlighted?
    2) How can I be sure that all photos from a given folder appear in Organizer when I use the "Folder Location" display view in Organizer?
    Thanks.

  • Can't see some photos in iphoto

Hi - I have a lot of photos stored in iphoto, and there are loads that, above a certain picture size, are showing blank. By picture size, I mean the slider at the bottom left or right (depending on which version of iPhoto - I have the same pictures on an old and new mac, hence with differnet versions of iPhoto). When set at the smallest size, all photos show fine. Above a certain size though they show a blank frame, and when I try to open them, I get a black background, with a grey trainagle or circle with a exclamation mark in the middle. Does this mean the files have been somehow corrupted? Are they therefore lost forever?

If the original files are still in the library but not being recognized by iPhoto and the rebuilding doesn't work this might:
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
You can tell if the missing files show up in this new library and if they do try rebuilding the problem library with  iPhoto Library Manager.

  • IPhoto can't see iPhone photos

My iPhone 5, updated to OS 7.1.1, is plugged in while booted from a Snow Leopard partition of my Mac Pro.  iPhoto 8.1.2  sees the iPhone, but not its photos.  Anyone have any guesses as to why this is happening?
I updated the iPhone's OS  yesterday.  Today I discovered this problem.  While I was fussing with the iPhone, I mistakenly told it to 'Don't Trust' my computer (that was stupid!)  After that happened, I reset the iPhone's Network settings, but that doesn't make any difference.  Both before, and after the 'Don't Trust' incident, the photos were not visible to this computer.
I don't have iPhoto on my Mountain Lion partition (whiy is that?  Isn't it rather self-serving of Apple to force us to use iPhoto, then remove it from the OS?), so I booted from Snow Leopard to get the photos off my phone.  I dont want to degrade the photo quality by emailing the photos to myself.  Because of softaware compatibility issues, I don't want to run Mavericks.
    Thanks for any ideas.
    Greg

Thanks, that did it, but not while I was in Snow Leopard.  When I rebooted back into Mountain Lion, Image Capture and Drop Box automatically notified me, and downloaded the photos.  Earlier, before changing boot partitions, a dialog box appeared giving me the choice of downloading the photos into one or the other of those programs.  I chose Drop Box, but at the time, nothing happened; that's why I decided to boot into Snow Leopard.
The strange thing about the iPhone is the way it's mounted.  I tried running Terminal to see if the iPhone was visible from there, but it wasn't.  "cd /Volumes" [Return]  followed by "ls" [Return] only showed me the mounted hard drive volumes.  The iPhone must be discoverable from Terminal, shouldn't it?

I can't see older photos events of iPhoto on my Apple TV 2nd Gen. Only recent events are shown and I have selected to see all photos, events and faces from the sharing preferences in iTunes. Does anybody have any idea how to solve it?

Mirroring is working on my iPad2 and iPhone4S (IOS5) but not on my iPad (ios5) or iPhone 3G (IOS4).
As I understand it, mirroring is restricted to iPad2 and iPhone4S on ios5.
    Hope that helps.

  • Can't see all photos on Camera Roll on laptop

I have a slightly unusual problem with my iPhone. I have downlaoded quite a few camera and photo apps from the app store. All of these work fine on the phone itself and I can view all pictures taken and edited with the various apps on the camera roll on the phone. My problem occurs when I connect my iPhone to my laptop and access it using Windows Explorer. When I do this I can only see the photos taken on some of the apps and not all of them. Photos taken using ClassicPAN, ClassicToy, ShakeItPhoto, Pro HDR, Pano to name a few can't be found. If I want to transfer photos from any of these apps to my laptop I have to email them but I have hundreds of photos so this is not feasible. I have a brand new Samsung laptop so maybe some of the settings are wrong but I don't even khow where to begin looking. I would appreciate any help you might be able to give me.

What visual presentation do the other 900 photos have? A Dotted Square? Do you get a ! or ? when you double click on them?
IF so: The ! or ? turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents. The most common cause of this is User Activity in the iPhoto Library Folder. Have you altered, moved or renamed anything in the iPhoto Library Folder?
If you haven't, then try rebuilding the database. Hold down the apple and option keys and launch iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
