IPhoto cannot convert Tiff to Jpeg after editing.

I have a set of very high resolution scans made on an 11" x 17" Epson scanner that I would like to edit in iPhoto. iPhoto imports these files (which are 450 MB or so in size) (sometimes) allows me to edit them - - and sometimes it crashes when I attempt to edit these files - - but when I attempt to export them as maximum resolution jpegs it says it can't do so. Once I've quit iPhoto and then start it again the edited image disappears when I double click it. My guess is that file is simply too large for iPhoto.

I Additionally, when I convert the file using the save as command in Preview, I can convert it into a jpeg or jpeg2000 and it is much smaller (71GB for example), but the same anomalous behavior occurs when I finish editing the file and quit iPhoto- - when I double click the thumbnail, the full sized image appears briefly and then disappears. leaving in its place a completely black window. I would be most appreciative of any insights.
Thanks.

  • Converting TIFF to JPEG with sips, then import into iPhoto problems

I am cataloguing a box of slides and negatives for my family. The scanner generates huge TIFF files (on purpose), and I have an Applescript that then uses sips to copy them into low quality JPEG files using this command:
    do shell script ("sips -s format jpeg -s formatOptions low -s description " & "'" & "Original path: " & (POSIX path of an_image) & "'" & space & (POSIX path of an_image) & " --out " & new_file)
where an_image is the source file, and new_file is the path and name of the converted image.
This way, I can save the original file path as the image's description while shrinking the file size to speed up later importing into iPhoto. As part of the iPhoto import, that description from the metadata is placed in the on screen comment section for each image.
This works fine to do the initial shrinking, but less than half of the resulting jpeg files can subsequently be imported into iPhoto. I get this error:
The following file could not be imported. (The file is in an unrecognizable format.)
And yet, Preview and Safari both open the files with no problems.
Is there anything else I need to set when doing the conversion with sips to make it easier for iPhoto to recognize the converted files?
I have over 1000 images, and anticipate a final total of about 2500 when I am done. These are images of myself and my siblings from the 1960s and 1970s, and my idea is to scan them all at high resolution, and use the converted, smaller files for iPhoto for keywording and Faces to get them organized, while retaining the paths to the original images. Any commentary is appreciated.

I have uploaded one of the bad JPG files here:
    www.mrcodeboy.com/smith/Try.jpg
I tried examining the metadata with exiftool, Image Events, and mdls, but there are a number of differences between the TIFF metadata and the JPEG metadata structures. I found no obvious differences, but this is a good idea, and I will continue to examine those closely for clues.
    *EDIT*
I downloaded the bad JPEG above onto a different machine; it still does not import into iPhoto. However, by invoking sips on that file to convert it back to a TIFF file thusly:
    sips -s format tiff Try.jpg --out TryTF.tif
it imported just fine. There has to be some sort of parameter that is NOT being addressed in the conversion from TIFF to JPEG that is somehow messing this up, yet is preserved when the file is re-written as a TIFF.

  • IPhoto does not see any changes after editing a photo in Camera Raw

    Hello everyone ,
I have some small problem with my iPhoto. I have set up Camer Raw in iPhoto as  External Editor, so when I click on edit in IPhoto,
automatically opens my JPG in Camera Raw. After editing in Camera Raw I'm clicking on ,,Save image" then destination is ,,Save in same location" When I go back to iPhoto to the same photo, iPhoto does not show any changes I have made in Camera Raw.
What could it be or should I set something in iPhoto or in Camera Raw?
Is there a chance in order to deal with this?
I will be grateful for any assistance and
    I'm waiting for advice
    Dawid

Any time a RAW file is edited in any 3rd party editor from within iPhoto it MUST be saved to the Desktop and imported as a new file. There's no other way to do it.  So the photos you've edited and saved are somewhere in the iPhoto Library folder system but cannot be recognized and used by iPhoto.
The following is geared for Photoshop and Photoshop Elements but might have some info relevant for you:
Using Photoshop CS3 or Photoshop Elements 9 as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's Advanced Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 9 the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
s  I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
NOTE: If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS/PSE without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in iPhoto".  That will let you either edit in iPhoto using the Edit button or Control-clicking on the thumbnail and selecting "Edit in iPhoto" or in PS/PSE by Control-clicking on the thumbnail and selecting "Edit in External Editor" in the Contextual menu.
This way you get the best of both worlds.

  • Iphoto book substitute tiffs with jpegs

I prepared an entire book of 100 pages with tiff. images which are very big. The book is ready but I can't save the book as a pdf or see the preview. As soon as it starts saving the program crashes. I figured I need to change all images and convert them in jpegs. Is it possible to export all the images as jpegs, import them back in the program and see them automatically changed in the book?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Using Pref Setter to view/edit preference files the book bleed amount used by iPhoto is 9 (no units). Have no idea how to determine the units but I imagine it a standard unit for the printing industry.

  • Iphoto is converting raw to jpeg!

ok, so i always import from my Canon Rebel XT raw files into iphoto 8. i use iphoto to organize my "negatives" and photoshop to edit. i have never had problems dragging raw files from iphoto into photoshop [in the dock], until recently. the problem is this:
i drag the file into photoshop and it opens as a jpeg.
and i realize that iphoto rotates the portraits and coverts them into jpegs and that to open them in the photoshop camera raw editor i need to convert them to the original raw settings before doing so. it is the same for both portrait and landscape orientation. they both open as jpegs.
i am able to right click on the thumbnail in iphoto and click Show File, and then drag that raw file from the finder into photoshop and have it open as a raw file in the editor, as it should. which should tell me this isn't a photoshop [cs3] problem, no? iphoto has been like this for a while now for me. probably since the last update?
i had an efficient little workflow mojo and now it's a hassle! i hope there is a fix for this. can anyone shed any light?

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Help converting tiffs to jpegs

After processing raw images in Elements 8 and saving as tiffs, I find that I need to convert the images to jpegs for commercial printing.  How do I  acomplish that?

In the Organizer, File->Export->As New File
In the Editor, open the .tiff and then File->Save As and select JPG
In this scenario, there is really no need to save a processed RAW as a TIFF, you can leave it as RAW and save a step (click on "Done" in the RAW editor)

  • Problem saving files as JPEGs after editing them as CR2 files

I took some photos in RAW format and used Photoshop CS2 to make my lighting adjustments (in the Photoshop RAW viewer). For most photos, I just clicked the "Save" button, and I had the option to convert and save the file as JPEG, TIFF, etc. But I had some additional changes to make in Photoshop using layers, so I clicked "Open" first before saving, and worked in the general Photoshop window. But after making my changes, I clicked "Save as" and the long list of file options to choose from was no longer there, and I only had the option of saving the file as: Photoshop, Cineon, Large Document Format, Photoshop PDF, Photoshop Raw, PNG, TIFF. I really need to save it as a JPEG, but it is not one of the options. I have flattened all the layers, and am working in RGB color mode.
If anyone could help me understand why I can't save this as a JPEG, I would really appreciate it! Thanks!

Convert the files from 16 bit to 8 bit and you be able to save your jpeg.

  • Cannot convert web to PDF after updating to Firefox 10.0.2

I have Acrobat X Pro 10.2.1 (student edition). In Firefox 10.0.2 I have enabled Adobe Acrobat - Create PDF 1.2. I can click to convert a web page, get a dialog box for filename & location, but after clicking save, the dialog box disappears and nothing happens (no conversion). Also, when I try to choose 'Preferences' from the drop-down box of the ConvertPDF icon, nothing happens. [Note that the conversion and preferences work fine in IE.]
I tried disabling all other Firefox add-ons -- no change to the problem. Is there some setting/option in the new Firefox that I need to alter (or make an exception) for this to work?
Also tried to 'repair' the X Pro installation (even from CD), but that did not change anything. And both X Pro and Firefox are up-to-date regarding updates / patches. ... Do I need to completely uninstall and reinstall X Pro?

I'm on a Mac, so take this with a grain of salt...
Is there a Windows Firefox 11 update? That's what I'm using and Create PDF 1.2 works just fine.
    Check for updates, maybe?
    Good luck,

  • LR doesn't auto import Jpegs after editing in PS

I have searched the internet and cannot find an answer for this.  When I am in LR and right click and choose to edit in photoshop, then retouch it and then save as a jpeg, LR does not automatically import the jpeg into the catalog.   So I synchronize the folder and it imports them in but then won't put by the original, even when I sort by name.  I want this to be automatic.  It was on my older version of LR but the new one I downloaded doesn't do it automatically and I can't figure out how to auto import the jpegs.
I am not tech saavy so go easy on me.

Ah, I think I have it figured out. My Canon software was also setup to push the image into LR as a registered application. With that disabled the auto import seems to be doing what I want. For anyone reading this later... Simply set the current image view to the preview size you want and all the imported images should open up at that preview size.

  • Converting tiffs to jpegs

I have exported images from lightroom in tiff format, now I would like to get them printed. The printer I have spoken to only works with jpegs? This brings up several questions, will I loose image quality? If so maybe I should be looking for a different printer. If not can I convert these files or should I just re-export them again using jpeg settings?
       Thanks !
    Joe

You're right about the jpegs for Bay. I was confusing them with the lab I
used before. The quality of their prints from jpeg was better than that from
tiff I got at a previous lab.
To get good color in your prints you need two things. I. you need good
monitor calibration. You have that covered already which is more than most
folks. This allows you to make sure the color you see is what ends up in the
file. II. you need to use the correct color space in your output file.
Colors are defined within a certain standard and the same color will have
different values in different standards or vice versa, the same RGB values
describe completely different colors in different color spaces. The most
common of those color spaces is sRGB which is the standard for the web.
Other big standards are adobeRGB and prophotoRGB. Both can describe a much
wider array of colors than sRGB, but are less standard and often lead to
unexpected effects if your destination is not very savvy. If your lab is not
very good, they will not understand files in adobeRGB or any other space and
your prints will come back desaturated and or muddy looking. Bay understands
different color spaces than sRGB and I usually send them adobeRGB jpeg
files. This allows for slightly more saturated colors in the final print as
the file can describe more saturated colors. This is noticeable in things
like Neon colors, flowers, etc but for many subjects it doesn't matter an
awful lot and sRGB would be just fine.
Regarding output sharpening. This is a different step from the capture
sharpening you do in Develop. Output sharpening, which is indeed done in the
export module, allows you to compensate for the softening that is introduced
by the scaling and printing processes. It basically slightly oversharpens
your output file (they will look a little too crunchy if you look at the
output files) which will get softened for a very nice sharp result in the
final print that will be more like what you see on your screen. This needs
some experimentation. I usually use matte standard and I scale to the native
resolution of the printers (250 ppi for the photographic printers at Bay).
Note that this is a detail that allows you to eke out the final last bot of
possible quality. In my experience, your customers will not notice this at
all but it really looks much better to me. Your customer usually looks far
more at the color and contrast of the image than he/she will take out a
magnifying glass to check the microdetail on your print. If you print for
fine art purposes, this is different though and you would be best off really
paying attention to this detail (pun intended) too.
    Hope this helps!

  • Trouble converting TIFF to JPEG

I have a Canon G9 and when I process RAW images in Canon's software, it automatically saves it as a huge tiff tile. I am using Photoshop CS3 on Mac 10.5 Leopard and when I open the TIFF to change it to JPEG, it doesn't offer that option in the "save as" screen.

How many bits per channel? I'm guessing it's 16. You need to convert to 8 under Image>Mode before trying to Save as jpg.

  • Cannot View Video in Canvas AFTER edits are made. Why?

so i just received Final Cut Pro for my birthday because i have been craving an amazing video editing system. I use this for comedic videos with my friends and to create Halo 3 Montages.
I have already saved clips in iMovie '08, i am able to import those clips and play them in canvas and the preview or whatever the one on left is, but when i insert file transitions or any effects for that matter, the section where i put the effect has a red line on the timeline of the sequence. When i try to play it in canvas that particular part has the blue/black screen and reads "undrendered!"
How can I fix this? please help...
Also, like many people, i love music in my videos, but I try importing an MP3 from iTunes and when it imports it can play in the left side player/preview player (whatever its called) but once again if I insert the MP3 into the sequence to play along with my video, all i get is the "beeping" sound instead of the the actual song.

    Hi Voltaic,
    Congatulations!
I think, now that you played a little bit with FCP, it's time read a little in tha manual. Rendering is explained in there.
The red line you are talking about tells you you need to render. That is to process the effect into a movie-file (AKA Render file).
The easy answer is: Select everything under the red line and hit Command-R (or menu: Sequence > Render Selection)
As said: More about rendering in the manual.
Actually the same applies to audio. The beeping sound means the audio needs to be rendered. Select and use Command R. But with every cut you make you'll need to render again, so it wuld be better to convert your 44.1 kHz mp3 file to 48 kHz AIFF. That doesn't need a render....
By the way: The left video screen is called Viewer, the right one is the Canvas. You can see those names in the top of those windows.

  • I cannot convert PDF to word after downloading new acrobat.

I just downloaded AdobeAcrobat to convert PDF files to word. The first time I tried to convert a file it worked. The second time it did not on a different computer. What could I have done wrong?

Not sure what you mean about downloading Acrobat. You would either have to download the trial or purchase Acrobat. I don't understand what you really have. It may be you have Reader (a free download) and not Acrobat.

  • Mac using iPhoto with elements 9 saving file after editing

I start with iPhoto select a photo to work with, make adjustment or add layer etc and then when I save the file I can never find it again!
It says it is saving it to my iPhoto folder I started from but it is not there.
Never had this kind of problem before. How can you direct Elements to save where you want it not where it wants it.
    Thanks
    LarryB

    Thanks for that info.
I had it almost set up correctly did not know in Elements to set "save over original" feature so that solved it.
I have no idea where these others I have modified went.
I search for them in the spot light but the path doesn't get me there.
It stops at iphoto library/modified etc.
They are not in the library that's for sure.
Anyway this method will work just fine.

  • Can't convert tiff to jpeg in PSE 4

When I try to "save as" for certain photos, I do not get the option in the dialog box of saving as a jpeg file (I do get jpeg 2000). Does anyone have any idea why, and what I can do to save the photo as a jpeg? Thanks.

Yes, but if the image has layers and is 8bit, you can still create a JPEG, only PE will create it as a copy, which is something like doing a Save As, only instead of the new image being open on your desktop afterwards, the old image is still there and the new image is wherever you saved it, but closed.
