IPhoto cannot see external storage drive

Very unusual freeze-up while "repairing" iPhoto required a forced shut down. Now cannot see external hard drive with photos on it. Can you help please.

Have no idea the format of the external disk. It plugs into the back of my big monitor and has worked perfectly until I upgraded to Yosemite and iPhoto 9.8 in late December. I had difficulty setting up iPhoto at that time, and you fine folks walked me though the process in mid January. All photos were there and in the proper albums. External disk is a Seagate Free Agent GoFlex, and it is backed up on Mozy and also on an iPad Air 2.
Problem started when I simply plugged in my iPhone and iPhoto told me I had to repair my database, which I did -- it took some time. Then I had to do something with Permissions. That never ended and a Word document froze on screen while I was working on it, and when I couldn't close any tabs in Safari -- couldn't do anything, actually -- iPhoto was continuing to spin with Permissions. Finally after about 15 minutes of that, I did a hard "push the start button" shutdown. The restart took a very long time.
Since I installed Yosemite and got iPhoto working -- when it was working -- the entire computer has been a bit sluggish and slow. And for the first time ever --and I've used Macs since the 1980s -- I had a freeze yesterday. Likely unrelated, but just a data point.
(BTW, is there any way I can find the discussion I had w/you folks back when I setup this iPhoto in mid-January? Anyway to search and find it in Support?)

IMac Finder cannot see external hard drive but Disk Utility can

I have a WD external hard drive and it has been attached to my iMac for a year or two. About two months ago I upgraded to Lion 10.7.5 and hard drive still worked. Then suddenly about a week ago the iMac no longer sees the external hard drive in Finder.
I have connected the hard drive to the iMac with different USB cables and into different ports and it makes no difference so deduce there is no issues with the cables or the ports. I have connected the hard drive to an old Macbook and it can see the harddrive and read some of the info but I really need the hard drive attached to the iMac as I store all my music and photos on the external hard drive.
I read another thread and someone asked if you can see the hard drive in Disk Utility. I tried this and Disk Utility can see the hard drive.
What does this mean? Any suggestions as to how to get the iMac to see the hard drive so I can access the data on it?
I dont really know how Disk Utility works therefore if that is any help to me.

Open the Finder.
From the Finder menu bar click Finder > Preferences then select the General tab.
Make sure: External disks is selected.

Cannot see external hard drive in finder even though listed in Disk utility

I have a major problem with my G5 after file vault became corrupted and I had to erase the user account with all my data after consultation with an Apple Store Genius.
I have an external Iomega external back up but the finder does not list it anymore and it does not appear on the desktop. It is seen by disk utility however and I have run disk repair which says its fine. When it is not mounted, the icon next to the hard drive name (in disk utility) is a firewire external drive, but when I do mount it it appears as the unrecognized file type icon (the icon with the piece of paper with a bent corner). It also doesn't show up when I enable hidden folders.
It does however mount on my son's iMac. All my data is on this external disk and its my only copy left.
Please can you help me or point me toward a previous thread. I have tried ejecting it and remounting the HD after turning it off but no luck.

when i open it in disk utility, all the buttons are grey, and i cannot verify or repair the disk. This happened once i updated it to mavericks.

HP Stream 8 tablet cant see external & internal drives at same time

I have an HP Stream 8 tablet. I have plugged an OTG 64gb flash memory card Sandisk Dual USB drive into the tablet charging slot. The Tablet recognises all of the 64gb of storage & can read & write to the drive with no problems.
However, when an external storage drive is plugged in, the device cannot see the 32gb sandisc micro usb , which I installed . The tablet only seems to be able to see 1 removable drive at one time, which is frustrating as I cant then copy items from the micro sd to an external drive.
Is there a way to make windows/hp stream tablet see all drives at the same time. I have insufficient space on the built in 32gb drive , after win 8.1, office 365 & other programmes are installed so I can't copy items onto that drive.
When the external flash is connected, I can only see the C: Drive & the plugged in flash drive. When the external flash drive is disconnected, I can then see the c: Drive & the microsd32gb card.
One of the problems I think is that the tablet doesnt seem to always assign drive letters to extra storage drives. How do I activate this?

It's something to do with the OTG 64gb flash memory card Sandisk Dual USB drive. Mine sees an internal 64GB uSD & a flash drive connected with an OTG cable. Drive letter asssignment is a Windows thing. You can customize it with USBDLM.

Accessing iphoto on my external hard drive

I just backed up my computer to a WD My Book for Mac. I am trying to verify specifcally that all of my iPhoto library has been successfully backed up before deleting anything but when i try and open it, its says I can't because it's in time machine. When I open time machine and try to access iPhoto, it won't let me open it either. My computers HD is almost full so I must remove photos from my computer. I am a photographer and occasionally need to access old clients photo sessions. Please let me know how I am able to access the photos on my external HD. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

It would be easier to relocate the complete iPhoto library to an external drive with a fast connection - Thunderbolt or USB3, and then work with iPhoto from that drive. Simply drag the library to that drive. This way you do not need to split up your iPhoto library and keep partial libraries in a different location. This can get messy, if you have duplicates in the partial libraries. And it is more difficult to search for photos, if you have several libraries, because you only can have one open at a time.
Any drive you are using with iPhoto needs to be formatted MacOS Extended (Journaled), see: Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture (this document applies to iPhoto as well)
The problem is - you want to do two in one; archive older photos and backup your library, using a backup.
You have to separate these two tasks and use separate drives for the backup and the archive, because a backup cannot double as an archive. The easiest way to achieve this would be to move the complete iPhoto library to an external drive and back this drive up to your regular backup drive.

I have an early 2008 MacBook. I had been using iPhoto on this MacBook until I purchased an iMac in 2011, at which time I copied my iPhoto Library from my MacBook to my iMac. At first I thought it wasn't able to show up anything because my MacBook was running two operating systems behind what my iMac was when I was running my iPhoto Library from that computer. So, I upgraded to OS X 10.7.5 and upgraded the existing iPhoto on my MacBook to iPhoto '11 version 9.4.3. However whenever I plug in the external hard drive and click on the iPhoto Library folder to open it up, it is still just opening up the already existing iPhoto on the MacBook (with my older pictures) rather than the iPhoto on the hard drive (with my newer pictures). How can I access my pictures that are on my external hard drive?

Thank you for your advice. I followed your directions, but came up with the same results. However, I did discover that whenever I open up the iPhoto Library that is already existing on my MacBook a certain set of pictures shows up. But then when I open up the iPhoto Library from the Hard drive another set of pictures shows up. BUT not ALL of my pictures are showing up on the iPhoto Library from the hard drive. At least the last two years of pictures are not showing up?! Actually, it appears that all the pictures are there from when I started using iPhoto about 5 years ago up until around the time that I got my iMac desktop computer and started using that (2 years ago). I have noticed that more recent videos I have made are showing up in a folder on the hard drive, but will not appear when I open up iMovie?! Any ideas on how to access my pictures from the last 2 years off of the hard drive???

Time capsule as an external storage drive

I have the 2 TB time machine / time capsule router running my network. I use an external hard drive to store all of my photos from my IMac 24 as the storage space was filling up. The time capsule, from my understanding will not back up my external storage drive. Am I able to designate the time capsule as the external drive to store my Iphoto library on and be done with my other external storage drive? Essentially making the Time Capsule my external drive as well as my back up drive? I hope that made sense.

That shouldn't be done, but Time Machine will back that drive up as long as it's not set to be excluded in the Time Machine pane of System Preferences. As an iPhoto library can only be stored on a volume formatted as Mac OS Extended, you'll be able to remove it from the exclusion list and use Time Machine to back it up unless you're using an unusual configuration.

has date ranging from 2014 back to 2010 but only highlight date from 2014 back to 2013
anything before 2013 is greyed out and cannot not be selected
when i touch the pages they only rush towards me a limited amount then stops

IPhoto Transfer to External Hard Drive

I'm trying to export about 10000 pics and vids from iphoto to an external hard drive. Each time I try about 500 files won't copy and I get an error message for each. Short of copy down each file and moving them over separately, is there something else I can do ?

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution. We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
what format is the external hard drive?
have you tried exporting in smaller batches to folders on the Desktop and moving those folders to the EHD? With iPhoto 9 and later you can automatically export the photos to folders representing the Events they are in via the menu option File ➙ Export ➙ File Export:
what fixes have you tried?
where is your library located on the boot drive?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
how much free space on your boot drive?

If it's the Library:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

NTFS is your problem.
iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, exporting, saving edits and sharing the photos.

This step is optional.
Click Export.
Choose where to save the exported photo files, and then click OK.
iPhoto works best with JPEG files, the standard format for data compression of still pictures. If you experience problems working with a non-JPEG file in iPhoto, use a different image-editing application to convert the image to JPEG.

File -> Export to a folder and copy it over.
That will give you a folder with the images. There is no way to move an album outside of iPhoto. You would need to have a library containing it.
