IPhoto cannot show photos unless scrolling or resizing!

The following happens both for event and pictures. The difference being that in events there are black empty heightened button like boxes for each event, while in pictures there is an empty gray box bordered with white dashes.
In either view, when I cklick on the scrollbar on the right side and scroll up or down there are actual pictures shown in these boxes. But as soon as I stop scrolling I'm back to empty black or grey boxes with no pictures at all. When scrolling to the top (that is reaching the top and not being able to scroll any further up) in the pictures view, some of the pictures stay on the screen until I move the mouse over them, at which time they go blank (grey with withe dashed border) again.
Faces also behave the same with the exception of a cork background and white photo border with name and no pciture whitin. Here scrolling has no effect. The faces are never shown no matter what.
Pictures can be shown by clicking on them, enlaraging the photo and showing only that photo.
Not being able to see any photos in thumbnail view makes it very difficult (or rather impossible) to use iPhoto and organize your pictures.
The last import from my camera also crashed iPhoto completely loosing the import.
I think my problems coincided with me buying and installing iPhoto 09. Is there any way to get this version working or is there a way to revert back to the old version?
I really need iPhoto working so that I can make albums that I can show on my TV through DLNA and my PS3, and also publish on my mobileme gallery, which do require a working iPhoto.
I really liked iPhoto, and I want it back again! Please, please, someone help me get iPhoto working again! Using Mac and mobileme I'm completely out of other options.

Thanks for the replies. Terrence, I saw your suggestion in other posts, but following that instruction had no effect what so ever. iPhoto just started as usual, and nothing else happened.
After poking around in the "iPhoto Library" filestructure i did find a folder called "Originals" which seemed to contain all my original photos, so I copied them elsewhere, deleted the "iPhoto Library" folder. When I started iPhoto again after that it created a new "iPhoto Library", and then I imported all my photos from my copy of "Originals". It took a while, but it seems to work now. I did loose all my albums except those published to mobileme.
iPhoto is a very nice application. Too bad that it is not very stable.

  • IPhoto not showing photos in Modified folder

I have an issue uploading photos into facebook.  I use iPhoto to manage all of my photos on my iMac, and I created different albums to organize photos.  When I try to upload some photos into my facebook, only the photos in Original folders show up in the albums, and the ones in Modified folders are missing.  When I open album directly in iPhoto, all the photos are there.  This happens both in Safari and Chrome.  Is there a way to fix this so that I can see all of my photos when I access iPhoto albums from the browser?

    iPhoto 09?
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • I cannot show photos from my iPad on my tv using AppleTV

I am not able to show photos from my iPad on my TV using AppleTV-2.
When I show my photos on my iPad and I click th AppleTV icon, choose AppleTV, it then asks for my Airplay-password. I enter it and click ok. Then nothing happens for a few seconds but then it is asking for my airplay-password over and over again.
What is wrong? What do I wrong?

Try turning off the airplay password on your Apple TV, playing a few slides and then try re-enabling your password if you wish to use it.

  • IPhoto 11 will not show photos unless importing new ones

iphoto 11 has been working absolutely perfectly for me until tonight. it might have been when emptying my trash but when i open it, it shows everything but does not show the pictures. I have screen captures to show you what I'm talking about.

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto cannot find photo to open

I have imported hundreds of photos into iPhoto. After installing 10.5 (upgrade method), many of the pictures I had imported previously will not export nor attempt to open when I drag to PSE 4.0. The message "cannot locate the photo" appears. I have no idea where it is in order to locate it. My "library" icon is gray....

    ifarabee
    Should I reinstall iPhoto?
I don't see what that would achieve. The issue with "where are the pics?" and as such, is with your library rather than with iPhoto.
Go to your Pictures Folder and right click on the iPhoto Library Icon. Choose 'Show Package Contents' and a finder window will open showing the contents of the library.
Your pics should be inside the Originals Folder, in the individual Events folders. Can you see them?

  • IPhoto not showing photos

    Hi,
When I go into iPhoto and click on the photos in my library, nothing appears. I can see the thumbnail but when I click on the photo, it just appears blank. Do I need to download all my photos again to have them appear in the Library? Have I lost all my photos completley? I'm new to Macs and I must have done something wrong but I'm not sure how to solve my problem. Thanks.

    megsav,
iPhoto imports all the images into it's own database which is the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder. It also keeps track of where all the images are, their file names, albums, slideshows, etc. in it's data files. there for everything such as deleting photos, renaming (titles) have to be done within iPhoto so it can keep track of the changes. If you rename or delete anything in the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder, iPhoto will have no way of knowing what you did.
Two Apple kbs for you to read
Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto library folder
    About the iPhoto Library folder
You said that you can's open any of your images in the edit mode. This would mean you did more than just rename and delete some photos in that folder in the Finder.
I suggest you create a new library and import the images from the old library.
    Close iPhoto
Rename your messed up iPhoto Library to "iPhoto Library_old"
Drag this library to your desktop
Hold down the Option key and launch iPhoto
This is the window you will get
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library
Once this new empty library is open it is time to import the images from your old library
    Go to File>add to library
Navigate to the old library on your desktop and choose it.
iPhoto will start importing the images from your old library
    This is what to expect:
Your images will be imported in nice dated rolls. (make sure your view is set to sort by rolls to see it) There are a couple of caveats to this. You will get rolls named "Originals" These rolls will contain your video clips and your original images that you had edited. If you had RAW files they would be in those rolls too (I don't do RAW, so I don't know for sure) Delete what you don't want from those rolls. You will also get the jpeg pointer files to your video clips imported. They will just be jpegs and will not point to the video clips anymore as iPhoto made new ones when the clips were imported again. You can delete those. they should be in a roll right next to the newly imported video clips so they are not hard to find. The thumbnail files don't get imported as iPhoto makes new ones when the images are imported.
Once all you images have been imported, check through the library and make sure everything looks ok.
You can now start making your Albums, and do your keywords or any other organizational steps.
You can also delete the old library on the desktop.
It is also a good time to backup this new library to CD/DVD by burning the iPhoto LIbrary folder in the Finder, or copying the iPhoto Library folder to an external drive formatted for Macs, or copying the iPhoto LIbrary folder to an iPod.
    Good luck!
Here is more info for you so you can better understand how iPhoto works.
--First thing to know and remember is this...Do not drag any images, folder of images into the iPhoto Library in the Finder. Images have to be imported into iPhoto within the application. Do not scan images and save them into the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder. Save them to another location such as the Pictures folder or even the desktop. You can then import them into iPhoto.
--All images that you import are sown in the library view. You can choose how you want to view, by rolls, by date, by rating, etc. When you put images in an Album, slideshow, book, etc, you are actually just putting pointers to those images in the library. You are not adding more images. If you delete an image from the Album it will still be in the library. If you delete an image from the library it is deleted from iPhoto's database and your hard drive (unless you have it backed up somewhere else)
--You have a folder of images on your hard drive and want to import them into iPhoto. Drag the folder of images into an open iPhoto Library window and the folder of photos will be copied into the library, resulting in a new roll with the name of the folder. You now have two copies of those photos, the ones in iPhoto's database and the ones on your desktop. You can keep the ones on your desktop that you just imported as backup or you can delete that folder.
-- you scan a picture/pictures and save it in a folder. You cannot scan directly into iPhoto or the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder.
You want all your photos in iPhoto so you import them into iPhoto.
Now you have two copies of that picture/pictures, so you can delete the originals that were in the scanned folder and keep the one/ones that were imported into iPhoto.
-- You download pictures from your camera into iPhoto.
There is now one copy of each of the pictures.
You want to change something about a picture you imported, such as
cropping it or changing the size, or changing the orientation.
Once you do that to a picture, you now have two copies of the picture
in iPhoto, the original and the edited one. The edited one will be in the library organize view. The original is packed away in an Original folder in your iPhoto Library folder under the date of the roll. You can always revert to the original by control clicking on the photo and choose "revert to orginal" You will not have this choice if you used iPhoto Diet to get rid of the Originals.
(a quick note on cropping within iPhoto...when you are in edit mode, you automatically will be in the crop mode with cross hairs to highlight the crop area. To finish cropping you must click the crop button and then go back to library view and your cropped picture will be there.
3.You want to use Photoshop or another graphic program to edit a picture in your iPhoto library.
You can open up prefs for iPhoto and choose "when double clicking on
photo ..do" choose "other" and select Photoshop. Now you can edit all
pictures in your iPhoto library in PhotoShop by double clicking. If you save the photo with the same name and as a flattened file it will be saved right into iPhoto and you will see the changes. If you don't want to save it into iPhoto then do a "save as" and save to the desktop. You will then have the original photo still in iPhoto and your new edited photo on the desktop.
Or, with iPhoto open, you can drag a picture from the library window
to your desktop (you see a + sign on the pic you are dragging). You now
have two of the same picture, one in the iPhoto library and one on your desktop. You can open up the one on your desktop in any graphic program and work on it. The one in iPhoto stays the same. You can also share/export the picture/pictures to your desktop or folder to work on them or do batch processing, etc. You will still have the originals in your iPhoto Library.
Or, you can open up the ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library/folders and option drag any
picture out of the folder to your desktop. Notice that you will see a plus sign while dragging the photo. This is copying the file to your desktop
I would advise anyone not to do this as they might forget to use the option key and drag the photo out. Next time you open iPhoto the photo will be missing.
Two Apple kbs for you to read

Don't forget that in Library view you can Control click on any picture and get a contextual menu with many options. One is to revert to original.

  • IPhoto cannot find photo.  when i press the find button.

The thumpnail of the photo is displayed.  When I try to select the photo it says file cannot be found.  I select the button to find photo.  Navigate to the new location of the photo.  But the files are all greyed out.  Cannot select the jpg file.
The file is valid.  i checked the user privilages and they are read and write for everyone.  The file opens fine in Prview.
    What is wrong with I-PHOTO?
    Thanks for any help.

The thumpnail of the photo is displayed.  When I try to select the photo it says file cannot be found.
Is this the alert you get?
That's an indication that at the time those photos were imported the library was being run as a "referenced" library.  Unless you can use the Find Photo button to find the photo on your Mac to relink it they are gone.
Download  Find Any File and use it to search for some of the image files that give that warning message. FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders and packages and if the full sized source files are on the hard drive FAF will find them.

  • IPhoto Cannot Show B&W

    Using iphoto 08 v 7.1.3.
Seems that i cannot see any thumbnail of black and white shots that have either been taken that way or changed in photo shop or aperture.
When the image is displayed in a sideshow within iphoto its dark and hardly viewable.
Has anyone else seen this happen or does anyone know of a solution?

I found an Automator workflow application that will convert the grayscale photos to RGB color mode and embed the sRGB profile. You can download it from Toad's Cellar. There's also an Applescript there that does the same thing and would be a better choice but it doesn't work on some grayscale files. I'd try that one first and if it doesn't work on a file use the Automator version.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • IPhoto not showing photo

I have a problem with iPhoto (6.0.6). I can see all pictures in my library, but when I make a zoom, I only get a white/gray square with a ! symbol. It only happens with some photos. Also, when I use the slideshow, I get blank slides for those same photos. I had never had a problem with iPhoto before! Does anybody know why this is happening?

Why does iPhoto not allow copy?

Yep I tried that. I get a quite often preferences/com.apple.alf.plist should be 80 but is 0
After my post I realised my wife's profile couldn't copy ANYTHING. No images no documents. The log-in was screwed. Solved itself in a way because Mountain Lion is so unstable when switching users - it did its usual crash and when I logged back in I removed the usual mentioned: preferences/com.apple.alf.plist "should be 80 but is 0" to trash and restarted again. This fixed it. For now - but with ML all is flakey
