IPhoto changes my dpi while editing - what to do?

Hello!
I have iPhoto 6 and have taken over 500 pictures for a wedding. Now they want to print bigger photos (A4) from my photos. All of a sudden we notice that all of the photos that I have taken with my Nikon D70, that are vertical have the dpi 70 instead of 300 needed for good quality print. Some of these pictures I have cropped but not all. I also have not turned all of them around. Most of them where taken the "right way" already with my camera. What I have done is that I have edited the colour or exposure in iPhoto. So why has iPhoto changed the dpi and why does it not ever notify me about this? Is there some way in how to prevent this from happening? Or change the dpi later in iPhoto? I can't possibly start re-editing each vertical photo in Photoshop, that is absurd! How can I prevent this from happening again?
Thank you for your help!

lkaranko:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. The resolution has not been changed. It's the pixel dimension of the image that is the more important factor. If you take a 1600 x 1200 image at 72 dpi it will give you a 22" x 16.6" print. But if you take that same file and print at 300 dpi you'll get a 5.3 x 4" print.
iPhoto just reports the resolution at 72 dpi which, if printed at that resolution would give you a very large print. If you select a print size iPhoto will squeeze the available pixels into those dimensions. The smaller the print size the larger the resolution will be.
In rotating the files a new jpg file is created and when it's saved there will be some jpg compression applied. The original file is left intact and can be recovered by selecting the photo and using the Photo->Revert to Original menu option.
The bottom line is: as long as the number of pixels do not change (or by very much) the inherent resolution of the file is not changed.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • In Aperature, how do you keep photos in the order you changed them to while editing? When you go to burn them to a disk, the order changes from what you see on the screen.

I need to know how to save my photos to a disk for a client in the order I changed them while working on them. I photographed a party with another photographer and joined both photographers photos. Now I want to keep them in the order the event took place and how I rearranged them.

The exported photos will show on the disk like any sequence of files, sorted by date, name, filetype, etc. To help your client to sort them according to your sequence, rename the files and append a sequence number. You can rename them on export by using an export preset, for example the name format "Custom name with index". That will append a number to the filename, according to the position in the album you are exporting.

  • IPhoto Titles & Descriptions revert while editing them.

So I've had this issue for a while, but it's only recently annoyed me enough to seek help for it.
When I'm in iPhoto, and have the 'info' tab open.   Quite often when I go in and try to edit a Title or Description of a photo, half-way through editing it, it will suddenly revert back to being whatever the original version was.  I find I have to type fast to make sure this doesn't happen.
Also, many times if I enter something, then click off elsewhere, it will immediately revert.  Whereas keeping my cursor in the edit area, and just 'waiting' until it changes back to the non-edit widget, seems 'safer'.
Why is it doing this?  Makes it very annoying to attempt to edit things.

No 3 would be my next step.
    If that doesn't help:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • JDeveloper 11g: spaces change into &nbsp while editing usecases

With JDeveloper 11.1.1.0.2 I am editing (new) usecases. After saving a usecase, certain spaces in my text have changed into the text &nbsp. How can I suppress this??
In another forum I have found the registry key: REPORTS_NO_HTML_SPACE_REPLACE (must be YES), but this is for Oracle Forms.

Do you solve this problem? I have the same attitude..

I've run Disc Repair from recovery partition recently but suspect I may need to revisit that.
My next step I suppose is also to reinstall the OS from recovery partition. Does that wipe user data? Does it replace user settings and logins etc?
Following that all that is left is reformat, reinstall OS, and replace user files from backup.
I've been trying to learn from all the input in this valuable thread. Manhy thanks to all. The common ground points to my GeForce card, anyone else with the 130 out there?
    What am I missing? Anything?
Thanks again for the shared knowledge!

    CookieDuster.
I think you are on the right track. It does look bad for your graphics chip.
Re-Installing Mac OS X on a drive without pre-existing flaws will not overwrite User files. But it would be prudent to:
    • Have good backups anyway.
    • Run Disk Utility ( Repair Disk ) as a precaution. ( Verify disk ) will suffice Provided it does not find any faults to be repaired.
    What have I missed?
Yours is an iMac and most of the rest on this thread are MacBook Pro or Mac Pro.

    BDAqua and old comm guy,
thanks so much for the good advice. I used both of these and now the problem has stopped. first I checked the finder crash logs and yes, my finder had been crashing repeatedly.
next I removed the preferences files from the library, rebooted from the CD and ran disk utility to repair preferences. since then my computer has been stable.
there were some preferences that didn't get repaired when I ran disk utility. I am copying them here to refer to later if I need to. I don't understand what these mean to me:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/Filesystems/AppleShare/afpLoad" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskManagement.framework/Versions/A/Resources /DiskManagementTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.

I have noticed that the refresh while editing my Nikon D70 raw files is slow, I can see windows like the histogram redrawing while making changes and the more changes I make the more unresponsive it gets.
Has anyone else noticed this on their hardware?
    Paul

    Paul:
It can't the too little memory but how much free space do you have on your HD? Also have you repaired disk permissions after the Leopard upgrade? If not do so but beware that it might be very, very slow, a bug, but will finish.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • IPhoto changing file size to 0 kb after only a few edits

I am uploading approx 5mb sized files directly from my camera into iPhoto. after just a few edits ( rotate, crop, color boost - nothing but presets) the file size is reduced to 0 kb and I cannot access the photo from any other program ( upload to facebook, email, slideshow). I can still see the thumbnail with the edits I made but can only do any thing with it if I revert to original. When it changes back to the original file size as well as the original photo. I am using version 8.1.2

Then that  suggests the original Library is corrupt.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • While editing a scanned pdf, Acrobat will not recognize the current font & change to very different font. How can I choose the font I want to match the current document?

While editing a scanned pdf, Acrobat will not recognize the current font & change to very different font. How can I choose the font I want to match the current document?

Thanks for answering. The version is XI.0.10. I just did the update yesterday hoping that I could now properly edit a scanned pdf document. Yes, it's happening on most all scanned documents. I followed your steps & found the list of fonts used in the document & then attempted to edit. The same occurs. When I type in a correction, I get an error alert... "the original font (in this case Fd 5805) is not available or can't be used in editing. Acrobat is using the font Minion Pro in its place."
When I select the text & right click as you suggested, my only choices are cut, copy, delete or select all, no "edit text".
I have no other options to choose another font. Thanks for any help you can direct my way.

  • How do you change the dpi settings in iPhoto

How do you change the dpi settings in iPhoto

Short answer: the dpi is set when you decide what size you're printing at.
Long Answer: Dpi means nothing in the digital world of your computer. There are no "inches" to have "dots per..." Size is measured in pixels. That's the same on your camera. It doesn't take 10 x 8 or 6 x 4 shots. It takes shots measured in megapixels. For instance 4,000 x 3,000 is a 12 megapixel camera.
Using that example, that shot from that camera has 12 million pixels. So that's how many "Dots" there are. To decide the ratio of dots per inch, you now need to decide the "inches" part. And that's printing.  Print at 10 x 8 and the dpi will be 4,000/10 or about 400 dpi. At 6 x 4 then it's 4,000/6 or 660 dpi. Work the other way: Print at 300 dpi and the resulting image will be about 13 inches on the longer side.
So, your photo as a fixed number of pixels. Changing the dimensions of the print will vary the dpi, changing the dpi will vary the dimensions of the print.

  • How can I change the pixel height and width of a photo in iPhoto without changing the dpi

I want to change the dimensions of a photo. Current dimensions are 480 pixels on each side. I want to make a copy that is 100 pixels on each side, but I want the dpi to stay the same. In iPhoto I tried exporting the copy using the new dimensions, but the result was a blurred image. Is there another way to do this?

to change the pixels crop to 100x100 and export with maximum dimension of 100 - see the user tip on exporting foo details on Export options - Exporting From iPhoto
As to DPI - digital photos have no DPI since DPI is Dots Per Inch and digital photos have no inches hence no DPI - when you print a photo then DPI is a mathematical calculation - dots divided by inches - it is not a setting
    Print a 480 pixel photos as a 1" square and the print it 480 DPI (480 / 1 = 480) and print the 100 pixel image as a 1" square it will be 100 DPI (100 / 1 = 100) - print a 480 pixel photo as a 4.8 inch square and it is 100 dpi (480 / 4.8 = 100) - just a calculation - not a setting

  • How would one skip from point to point that the video is changing while editing.

How would one skip from point to point that the video is changing while editing, like if a certain set of pixels changed to white, and then mark it.?
Basically, I have a set camera, and when certain objects change color I want to mark it.   Think of a baseball flying through the air off a pitchers hand, and be able to skip to each point the pitcher is in that position.

The only method of this level of content analysis I'm aware of is with your eyes.
You'll just have to wacth the video to find those parts.

  • IPhoto changes slideshow when exported

I am having significant problems with iPhoto changing the slideshow when I export it to iDVD or even Quicktime. This is so frustrating! All I can attribute this to, is one of the updates. I have used this to do DVD's for weddings, graduations, birthdays, anniversaries, etc. with no problem, then somewhere along the line, it began changing the timing. All my hard work to synchronize the exact picture with the music - GONE!
Please help, as I have lots of these to do on a tight turnaround time. I adore my Mac & really need for this to work like it used to!
    Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    The audio syncing has been a problem with iPhoto 6 for a while now. There is a couple of ways you can do what you want;
1 - create the slideshow in iPhoto without music and share to iDVD.
2 - when the import into iDVD is complete, close iDVD without saving and look for your movie in the Movies folder. This produces the larger size movie than just exporting to Quicktime does.
3 - open the movie in iMovie and add your tracks. You have considerably more control in fade ins and outs, cutting out the dead time at the end of a track, etc.
4 - save the iMovie project.
5 - open iDVD, select your theme.
6 - drag the iMovie project file into the iDVD menu window, avoiding any drop zones. This avoids additional encoding by iMovie so the only encoding done is by iDVD when you go to save as a disk image or burn directly to disk.
Are you using the KB effect in your slideshow? If not, you can get, IMO, better image quality slideshows by creating the show entirely in iDVD from the imported stills. By selecting the option to scale photos to the TV Safe Area you won't lose any of the picture to the TV overscan phenomenon that affects all QT files used in iDVD. This method also allows you to add titles/sub titles to selected slides or add a text slide as a title. The scale to audio in iDVD is very precise.
