Iphoto; Classic environment no longer supported

"You can't open the application iPhoto because the classic environment is no longer supported."
Posting this for a pal whose new iMac (Nov 2008) gives her this msg when she tries to access her photos in iPhoto. She is no longer able to open the program from her dock, nor from her Applications folder. Does she have to re-install the software to access iPhoto from now on? If so, how does one re-install. She has not backed up anything since becoming a new Mac customer.
Thanks for the assist.

Try re-install:
To re-install iPhoto
1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applcations Folder to the trash)
2. Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name
3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only...’

  • Can't open application because the Classic environment on longer supported

I created a droplet on my 2013 Macbook Pro and emailed it to My 2013 Macbook Air, both are running Maveriks. On the Air the app is locked and says "Can't open application because the Classic environment on longer supported"

Try: open the droplet in AppleScript Editor and re-save and email again (edit: right-click the droplet and select "Compress" as Frank suggested).

  • Downloading Sony Alpha 900 Firmware: "Classic Environment is not supported"

Sony DSLR users have been offered firmware updates for the a-850 and a-900 since dec 2nd; I have tried in vain to download it and the message I get on my mac is : "You can't open the application DSCA900-1.APP because the Classic environment is no longer supported". What does this mean???

This is because Sony are idiots. The download link from <a href="http://support.sony-europe.com/dime/downloads/downloads.aspx?site=odwen_GB&f=FW_DSLR_A850_A900_V2_WINMAC&m=DSLR-A850"?this page</a> works, but when unzipped the file is a Classic application (pre-OSX), despite the page's claims that it's for OSX. You won't be able to run this application. You need to contact Sony and tell them they're fools.

  • Iphoto 6 books no longer supported

I just got a message saying I will no longer be able to order a book from my iphoto 6 after 13 March as it is no longer supported. Does this mean I will have to upgrade my computer, my operating syatem and all of my software to be able to order any more books??

It means you will need to upgrade to iPhoto 08 at least. As to what else you need to upgrade will depend on what exactly is on your machine.

  • Why is it when I try to load photoshop 5.5 it says "cannot open the application install 5.5 b/c the classic environment is no longer supported"?

What does it mean; "cannot open the application photoshop 5.5 because the classic environment is not supported"

It's not part of Mac OS X 10.5 on a PowerPC Mac or of any OS on an Intel Mac. You need to use Mac OS X 10.4.11 or earlier, or a newer Photoshop version.

  • Mac OS 9 – Classic environment support

    Hello,
Couldn't find Classic environment (OS 9) support package for OX S 10.4 on the Apple website.  Can someone please provide a link?
    Thanks.

Apple doesn't provide it online. You get it from the computer's original disks as long as you're using a PowerPC Mac which shipped with Mac OS 9 or the client version of Mac OS X.
The retail Mac OS X 10.0 to 10.4 client packages contain the Mac OS X drivers for Classic but not Classic itself.

  • Iphoto 7 no longer supported

I made an album in iphoto as I have done in the past. This time when I tried to send it for publishing, I got a message saying that iphoto 7 is not longer supported. From reading this forum, I see that I will need to update to a later version of iphoto, likely not the most recent as I expect that my comupter is much too old for it. My question is, if I upgrade to a later version of iphoto, will I have to start again to make the album that I have spent days working on or is there some way to transfer it? Thanks for your help.

Yes, that's right.  You will have to upgrade your iPhoto to at lesat iPhoto 3 (09) or later in order to purchase print products from Apple.
if I upgrade to a later version of iphoto, will I have to start again to make the album that I have spent days working on or is there some way to transfer it?
No.  But depending on the theme you've chosen you might have to change themes as some have been dropped while others added.
What model is your Macbook, i.e. Macbook x,y.  You can find the information by going to the   menu and selecting About  This Mac ➙ More Info.  With the help of MacTracker we'll be able to tell if you can upgrade to Mavericks and iPhoto 9.5.
If you can't upgrade to Mavericks you'll have to purchase a copy of the iLife 09 disc from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com and install iPhoto 8 and update it to 8.1.2. which will run on 10.5 or later.
For iPhoto 9 up to 9.3 you'll need to be running Lion or later.

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know some details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
    what fixes have you tried?
    where is you library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?

  • I have been trying to move pictures to iphoto and am now receiving a message that "you cannot open the application iphoto because the classic environment is no longer supported.

I have been trying to move pictures into iphoto and am now receiving a message the say I "cannot open the application iphoto because the classic environment is no longer supported."

Launch iPhoto the the Option key held down and create a new library.  See if you can import those photos into it.  If you can then your current library is damaged.
If that's the case make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
delete  the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
       2.  delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in the Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select last three options.
    Fix #3
Use  iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Iphoto will not open as it is saying  it is no longer supported by the current environment

I am trying to open Iphoto and there is an error mesage saying "you can't open the application iphoto because the Classic environment is no longer suppoerted"

    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List* there.
For older versions that have been installed from Disk you'll need these additional steps:
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 or later they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
*Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

  • Classic environment is no longer supported.

I am a pc user switching...
I have some old DVDs, vol 1 an vol II. Vol II is the newest, and have the "built for OS X" logo on it, but both are old. They install fine under windows XP.
The MAC installation is to drap a folder, open the folder, and start the program (no installer dmg like I have seen elsewhere). However, you then get the error message:
you can't open the application "Hemera Photo-Objects" because the Classic environment is no longer supported.
I have boot camp/parrallels, so I realize I could access them that way, but they work so poorly it would be a pain.
I have no idea what the error message means, is there a way around it? The mfg no longer support mac that I can see.
    Bob

As Baltwo already mentioned, Classic is the name for Mac OS 9 running under Mac OS X in emulation. Apps for Mac OS 9 are different than Mac OS X apps. In the early days of Mac OS X, most people still used a lot of Mac OS 9 apps, so there was an emulator built-in (called, you guessed it, "Classic").
As Mac hardware has moved to the Intel chips (Mac OS 9 ran on PowerPC chips), it has become more and more difficult to support Classic, and less and less useful, since most people don't use Mac OS 9 apps anymore. So, recent hardware doesn't support Classic, and Leopard dropped all support for Classic.
There are third-party solutions, though they're not going to be easy to use, primarily due to the need to find an old Mac ROM image. I have been unsuccessful at finding one to download... old links are gone now. If this software is something you really need, it might be easier to visit eBay and buy a cheap older Mac.

I am not able to install my 'Complete National Geographic' cd on my Mac mini which runs Lion OS. The error message I get says  'Can't open installer as classic environment is no longer supported' can some one suggest a solution.

It means the software is PowerPC code, which is no longer supported in Lion. Your choices are to go back to Snow Leopard, run Snow Leopard Server in a virtual machine within Lion, see if the vendor has an updated version of National Geographic that will run on an Intel Mac, or run the software on an older Mac separately.
