IPhoto cleanup processes?

I loaded iPhoto today, and it seems to be using between 60% and 90% of the processor, just sitting there (I haven't done anything with it). I'm wondering if it is doing some sort of library cleanup or optimization. Anybody know anything about that?

Hi Tor,
Have you tried a rebuild yet?
Try this:
Before doing a rebuild make sure iPhoto's trash bin is emptied. You can do this by control clicking on the trash bin, or from the menu bar under iPhoto.
Close iPhoto
Duplicate the iPhoto Library folder
Drag the duplicate to the desktop (hopefully you have enough room on your hard drive for the duplicate.)
Launch iPhoto holding down the Command and Option keys until you see the rebuild options screen.
Choose the first three options. If you were missing photos in your library, also choose the last option. Be advised that you will get a roll of orphaned photos and it might be quite huge. Most of them will already be in your iPhoto library, but use caution when deleting anything from this roll until you are sure the photos are still in your library in another place. It might be a good idea to share/export this roll of photos just in case you need to import them again.
Back to the rebuild, depending on the size of your library it might take some time. When it is done, hopefully your photos will be there.
You might see some unexpected results as I did when I did a rebuild. Photos had been moved to wrong dates, video clips had lost their duration info and some were even orphaned from the jpg pointer file. It took me some time to straighten it out again.
This is the reason to make a duplicate before you rebuild, in case you do not like the result. If you don't like the result, close iPhoto, then delete the rebuilt library and drag the duplicate back into the Pictures folder making sure the name is iPhoto Library. Launch iPhoto and it should open the library in the Pictures folder.

  • SMON cleanup process taking longer time (cleaning temporary extents)

    Os info:     Solaris 5.8

    Message:
We are in the process of testing our upgrade from 9.2.0.8 to 11.2.0.3. As a part of this, we have cloned our production database and started cleaning up of unused objects on the new instance.
Dropped an Audit Table (27g table size & 11g index size) from SYSTEM tablespace as a part of 11g upgrade tasks. As you know SYSTEM tablespace is under Dictionary managed tablespace and drop table ran for about 2 weeks.
We are unable to bring this database gracefully, as SMON is still cleaning the temporary extents. This cleanup seems to be very slow and will take about 40+ days.
Created SR regarding this issue, to speed up the SMON clean up process.. but no luck.
At this moment we are looking for a solution to
1#Is there a way to speed up the SMON cleanup process (temporary extents)?
    OR
2# Is there a way to bypass the cleanup of this temporary segment and bring the database gracefully?
    No Luck from Oracle Support...
    Googled it but no luck.
Just want to check with the folks over here and see if there is any solution for this issue.
Thanks in advance for your time and efforts on this forum. Appreciate your assistance!
    Thanks,

    Just passing by.

If the data is not needed, drop the index, truncate the table and then drop the table (as rp0428 noted above)
    >
Srini and rp0428, what do you guys know that I don't? A "drop table" (which is what the OP indicated was run) should drop any data (effectively the same thing as a truncate) and all associated indexes. Does the truncate offer some performance benefit in this case?
And I'm still trying to wrap my head around a 40 day drop. The statement, "started cleaning up of unused objects" scares me if there is more backup tables in this bloated SYSTEM tablespace. If that is the case (and maybe regardless), I wonder if it would just be better to create a fresh "clean" database and then with transportable tablespaces reattach all the DATA tablespaces to this new database. Fresh start.

  • How can we monitor the audio after the cleanup process before we actually record the trans

I have the Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS board and I am using it to transfer vinyl records to make CDs. Before my upgrading of Creative Media Source 2 to Creative Media Source 5, I was able to monitor the audio after the cleanup prior to the transfering process. Now I can only monitor the sound at the line input point and not after the cleanup process. Is there any way that we can do that?Vinylrecord

Assuming you mean Actions when you say "Batches", use this menu...
    1.  Click on the name of the actions set you wish to save.
    2.  Click the fly-out menu icon at the upper-right corner.
    3.  Save Actions, put them someplace on your hard drive other than in the Photoshop installation area.

  • Iphoto cleanup and migration to Apeture

I have been using Iphoto for some time now on my mac book pro and ammased at 92gig photo library.
Unknowigly i didnt know that rotating photos or touching up red eyes would create duplicate photos in my iphoto library, taking my library size to: 92gig masters and 120 gig in previews!!!!
Add to that an iphone chache of 60gig and you can tell I made some big misatkes along the way to managing my library of photos.
Well I have spent a fair bit of time reading about what to do. I am now ready to migrate to apeture BUT I just want some piece of mind before I do it so I dont destroy my library.
I am planing to copy and move my current library to a external drive as a fall back in case I make a mistake.
Then with the photo library still on my mac I will rename it and this will be what I use going forward as my apetrue photo library.
    Not sure about the following:
    1) How do I get ride of all the previews and iphone cache from the library so that when I assign that as the aperture library I dont have the same issue again?
    2) I am planing to get ride of (if possible) my whole previews section of the library, all I want is the originals. I have not done any major photo editing to any photos so I am happy to losse those as long as I have my originals.
However, I have read that previews may also make up any photos that I have uploaded online? Is this true?
EG: I have uploaded photos from iphoto to facebook albums. If I get ride of all my previews will the connection to the album on facebook be lost? Im thinking it wont but just after piece of mind.
    3) I have every photo ever imported into Iphoto stored also on my mac book pro hard drive in a seperate folder to the iphoto library. When a photo is imported to iphoto or appetrue its imported to the library, also on the hard drive. So to avodi making further mistakes after I upload a photo into Iphoto or Appeture I really should be removing the photo from mt harddrive right? Pretty sure I should be as its now in the main library but just after reassurance.
    4) open to idea to help me manage my library better in future. I have always broken my photos up into events but when I migrate to appeture I may have a lot more better options available. Happy to hear of any best practise you may have for managing large libraries.
Thanks in advance for any tips you can give me.

Previews are a key part of the iPhoto (and Aperture) workflow and you might want to think carefully before getting rid of them.
Remember that iPhoto (and Aperture) is a non-destructive processing tool. When you edit a shot - like fix red eye - your master file is not touched. Instead, your decision is recorded in the database and applied live to the shot when you view it. So, what you see in the iPhoto window is your Master+you decision. The edits are not committed to the photograph until you create a new file that includes them. To do that, you export. File -> Export, and anything you export (except at the Original setting, of course) will contain the edits in a new file.
Obviously that would be tedious to do everytime you wanted to email a snap to Grandma or upload a shot to FB. So, to ease that issue we have Previews. These are medium quality versions of the photos, with little metadata, that can be accessed via Media Browser and/or drag and drop.
Removing the Previews means removing that capability, and every time you want to use a shot in a Word Processing document or sync to your iPhone means you have to export it to the Finder first.
    Just bear that in mind.
    1) How do I get ride of all the previews and iphone cache from the library so that when I assign that as the aperture library I dont have the same issue again?
Aperture has options to generate, remove or change the quality of Previews, so you will manage those in Aperture. There is nothing to be done before migrating to Apertrue that cannot be done more safely afterwards. See the Help on Aperture for more.
However, I have read that previews may also make up any photos that I have uploaded online? Is this true?
EG: I have uploaded photos from iphoto to facebook albums. If I get ride of all my previews will the connection to the album on facebook be lost? Im thinking it wont but just after piece of mind.
Depending on the specific method you used to upload, yes it is very likely that those are the Previews - otherwise your facebook shots would have red eye and be the wrong orientation. (This is why Previews are used. Same in Aperture, but you can chose simply not to integrate with other apps.)
I'm not absolutely sure what will happen to your FB albums if you delete the Previews. I'd ask that on the Aperture forum.
o to avodi making further mistakes after I upload a photo into Iphoto or Appeture I really should be removing the photo from mt harddrive right? Pretty sure I should be as its now in the main library but just after reassurance.
That is wasting disk space, and as it's not even on another disk it doesn't constitute a back up.
    4) open to idea to help me manage my library better in future. I have always broken my photos up into events but when I migrate to appeture I may have a lot more better options available. Happy to hear of any best practise you may have for managing large libraries.
I'd ask that one on the Aperture forum. It doesn't use Events but a similar concept called projects. FWIW I have my basic organisation is a Folder per year and within it, a project for either chunks of the year - like Spring 05 - or specific events - John's Wedding. Pretty much everything else is done with Keyowrds.

  • Iphoto post processing speed

When I individually edit photos in iPhoto and add the noise reduction, after a few pictures it takes 15-30 seconds for the next photo to display. Therefore when I am working on a few hundred sports photos, it adds a lot of time to post processing. It is really only a problem when I use the noise reduction.
Any suggestions on how I can speed up the process. Thanks.

Just to add some detail, on my iMac 800 I printed two pages of 9-up and it took between 3-4 minutes to process and even longer to print. The printer would have to stop and process data after printing every line or two at most. The two pages took over 10 minutes to print on the printers normal plain paper setting. As a comparison I can print the same photos laid out the same way from InDesign in a minute or two.
I noticed this problem existed since the early versions of iPhoto. I just can't figure out why iPhoto causes my systems to choke so badly when printing.

  • IPhoto tag process started assigning bogus names

Last night, I was tagging people and places to all of my past photos. The mac was NOT plugged in.  After making great headway, my project was brought to a halt due to bogus names (the same group of names) being assigned to every pic.  I wasn't able to change anything and the software ended with locking up.   I shut laptop down and re-started.  Same thing.  Soo, I put the process to bed for the evening.  Plugged in the Mac and shut everything down as properly as possible (had to force the shut down on iPhoto).
This morning?... I start up the laptop and go into iPhoto.  Went back to the 'event' that I was working in.  All seemed fine until I hit the same picture that seemed to cause the problem.  From there, those names kept appearing on EVERY photo in every event.  Again, I can't delete the name OR the photo AND iPhoto locked up.
    Any suggestions?

    Do the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window. Be sure to follow the circled recommendation in the screenshot.
    2 - apply Option #4, Rebuild Database.
    3 - try naming again.

  • Macbook freeze using iphoto ( kernel_task process )

I have a macbook pro early 2011, 8Gb ram, ssd disk and core i7 processor. I install Yosemite after whe use raw files in iphoto and system use all memory ( proces kernel_task ) and freeze mac. I unistall and install iPhoto and same problem. Any solution ?

My Mac Pro has had this same issue since upgrading to Snow Leopard. It will only run for an hour or two before kernel_task takes up 100% of CPU. I have tried your solution, no luck. I also cleared all the caches, checked the hard disk by booting from the install disk and running Disk Utility. I have not installed any new hardware or drivers. Has anyone else been having this problem?

  • IPhoto cpu usage high, process isboxd

    Hi All
Hoping you could shed some light on an issue i'm having with iPhoto. I've recently noticed that on launch it has been running a process called isboxd, and this is using a high amount of cpu power, and also pushes my core temp up to 80 degrees C. Once i quit iPhoto this process stops and cpu usage drops back to its normal 1%. I've tried quitting the process whilst iPhoto is running and it immediately restarts itself. I have also rebuilt my iPhoto library too and this hasn't sorted the issue either.
    My iPhoto library is 56GB
I've only just started noticing this process happening, hopefully someone can shed some light onto what the process is doing, and if i can stop it.

Then try to test in a different user account. You might want to enable the guest account for testing. If you are seeing the same proble in a different account, that would show that your iPhoto preferences may be corrupted.
Delete the iPhoto preference file: com.apple.iPhoto.plist from your     ~/Library/Preferences folder.
In Lion and Mt. Lion also the cached file in
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto
The library is hidden in Mt. Lion: To remove the files:
Click somewhere on the empty Desktop to bring the Finder forward.
Select "Go" in the Finder's main menu bar and hold down the alt/option ⌥ key, until you see the "Library"  in the drop-down menu. Double click it to open a Finder window, so you can browse the files inside.
Scroll down to the "Preferences" folder and open it.
    Remove com.apple.iPhoto.plist
Note: this will reset all  iPhoto preference settings to the default values, you may want to take a note of them, before you do that.

  • ACR & IPHOTO--processing multiple images

I am wondering how I can open multiple pictures in ACR from IPHOTO to process?
Thanks a bunch..I have been trying to figure this out forever!!
    Jenny

I'm not sure it's possible to do it directly from iPhoto. It's frustrating me as well!
In the Finder, if you have multiple raw images selected and right-click and select Open With Adobe Photoshop Elements, it will open in ACR with all the image preview to the left. You can then select one, some, or all of them and apply the same settings.
In iPhoto though if you select multiple raw images and right-click and select Edit in external editor, the images will open one at a time.
ACR does let you change how it processes each new file. If you select Previous Conversion, once you process the first one, you can use the same processing on the next images.
Another way around this is in iPhoto, right-click and select Show File. This will open the Finder and you can then select multiple images and precess them all at once. This really isn't a very good solution though because it adds another step and you have to find the images agan.
Hope this helps and if anybody else knows how to do it from iPhoto, that would be wonderful!

  • IPhoto Start Error: Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable

Having the same issues with iPhoto as an OP in another thread. When I try to start iPhoto I get the following error, "Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable."
I have tried rebuilding the database with no joy to resolving the issue. The library has not been moved to another drive so I have not bothered with the "LockId" process someone recommended.
Following the instructions provided by Linc Davis in another thread....
    Command Line In Terminal: "find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 \) 2>&- | wc -l | pbcopy"
    I get the following response.

Does anyone have suggestions for what I can do to get iPhoto back up and running?
    SYSTEM:
    Hardware: iMac9
    OSx Version: 10.6.8

Went thru the "rebuild library" process again. This time I selected to rebuild the library from an automatic back up. When I did that a screen came up saying "Upgrade or Quit - The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto". I selected Upgrade and everything seems fine now.
Not sure why anything would require an upgrade as I haven't done anything to upgrade iPhoto. Hope this is not a virus.
My Mac seems really slow. If anyone can recommend a cleanup process, I'm interested in going that route.
Thanks for the help here on the community forums!

  • Adobe Album versus iphoto organizing

I may be crazy, but I cannot figure this out...I have been using Photoshop Album on my PC. In Album, you can view/sort your photos by the folder they are in - meaning, when I uploaded my images to my PC using my Canon camera software, it put the images into folders based on the date the images were taken. So even if I took only one image on one day, that image would be in a seperate folder in "My Documents" and I could see that folder and that image on the Adobe Album viewer.
With iphoto, when I upload my images using my CF card, the images get put into an iphoto roll which is dated the date I uploaded the photos. So even if I have photos taken on from the 1st to the 12th, and upload them on the 14th, all the images are put in a roll titled "14th".
Is there a way to view my images based on the date I took those images - seperated by "folders" - i.e. not all batched together in the library view? Can I view my photos like they are sorted in the Finder - if you look in Pictures-iphoto library-2006-01...the folders listed are by the day the images were taken. Can I get this type of view in iphoto?? Am I making myself clear here??
    Thanks!
    iMac G5 (iSight)   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Lightroom has no awareness of the existence of iPhoto. There is no way that it can recognise the iPhoto Library or any of the work you have done in it - albums, keywords etc. To move files or photos between the two you will need to export from one and import to the other.
Aperture recognises the iPhoto Library and there is a command there to facilitate migration from iPhoto to Aperture. This process captures your Events, Albums, keywords and so forth.
Also, with the Aperture -> Show iPhoto Library command you can import individual photos over to Aperture.
From iPhoto the Show Aperture Library command means you can access the Previews in your Aperture Library.
At heart, these three applications do the same job. Aperture and Lightroom are firmly focussed on the Pro user shooting high volumes of RAW. They both offer distinct advantages over iPhoto in processing RAW, no matter what the volume.
What iPhoto can offer both of these are - very simple books, calendars and so on and much better slideshows options.

  • Print quality difference between iphoto and aperture...?

when ordering books, is there a print quality difference between using iPhoto and Aperture? or are they sent to the same lab?
it's possible i may have some setting wrong, but when i order a book using iphoto, i never really feel the quality is that great. it's good, i just feel it could be a lot better. the print quality sort of reminds me of newsprint, albeit high quality newsprint. similar sized prints made at home on my basic 3-in-1 printer look better.
    thanks...

Previews are what you view on your display. When you import a photo into Aperture (and I'm pretty sure iPhoto as well), your computer automatically generates a preview for quick viewing. The original images are stored in your library, but it is the preview that you see.
In Aperture, you are able to set the size and quality of these previews. When sharing photos between Aperture and iPhoto, the process is as follows:
Let's say that your images are stored in Aperture, but you also want to be able to view them in iPhoto without taking up too much room on your hard drive. Essentially, if you were to import the originals into iPhoto as well, you would be storing two exact, yet separate copies of the same image on your hard drive. As you are aware, with large images (whether JPEG's, and especially RAW) this would put quite a tax on your storage capacity after not too long.
So, you have your images in one or the other (in this case Aperture), but you want to play around with them in iPhoto. What you can do, is open iPhoto, go to the File menu and then select, Show Aperture Library. This will open a window with all of the contents of your Aperture Library. You can then drag any images you want into iPhoto . The only thing is, you are not dragging the original JPEG's, but rather, the previews of those images. If you have those previews set to a lower quality (again for capacity concerns), you will only have lower quality and lower detailed images in iPhoto. These images might not be ideal, or even suitable for printing high quality prints. The previews that you generate in Aperture though can be adjusted to be extremely high quality with no size limits.
My thinking was that since you mentioned Aperture, it sounded like you had experience with working with it and with ordering a photo book through Aperture. I guess you were saying that you ordered via iPhoto, weren't happy with the quality and were wondering if Aperture created books were better.
Anyway, if this is the case, I cannot answer that for you. I have never ordered a book through Aperture. If the quality of your images is good, you should be able to get a decent product no matter where you order it from. There is not doubt that the materials used and the print shop that does the work makes a difference, but if your images are good, you should still get a decent product through iPhoto. Perhaps iPhoto isn't the way to go though if you have had poor experiences with them.
If you haven't used Aperture yet, I would highly recommend it though aside from the photo book aspect of this thread. It is a stellar product.
    I hope this helps.

  • Dsee 6.2, idsconfig, vlv index processing problems

    Hey Folks,
I ran into a problem where the idsconfig script failed on creating 4 vlvindex entries. I had to modify the script to allow me to troubleshoot the problem. I ended up fixing the problem manually, but I'm still not to sure why it happened to begin with. It seems like a race condition, but i could be dead wrong. I thought it might have been the way I answered the idsconfig questions but I went over it quite a bit. This post may be a bit long, but I want to provide enough information.
    - Solaris 10 08/07 fully patched (using smpatch) as of 1/10/2008
    - DSEE 6.2
    - idsconfig that comes bundled with Solaris 10 08/07
    - All this is being done inside a logical domain (ldom) on a T2000 using a file image as a disk
The first thing I did was make the following modifications to the idsconfig script so it would not exit on error while adding vlv index entries, and also commented out the cleanup process so I could view the temp file created by idsconfig
Original Code from the add_vlv_indexes() function:
             # Add the index.
             ${EVAL} "${LDAPMODIFY} -a ${LDAP_ARGS} -f ${TMPDIR}/vlv_index_${i} ${VERB}"
             if [ $? -ne 0 ]; then
${ECHO} "  ERROR: Adding VLV index for ${i} failed!"
                 cleanup
                 exit 1
             fiSame code, after my modifications:
             # Add the index.
             ${EVAL} "${LDAPMODIFY} -a ${LDAP_ARGS} -f ${TMPDIR}/vlv_index_${i} ${VERB}"
             if [ $? -ne 0 ]; then
${ECHO} "  ERROR: Adding VLV index for ${i} failed!"
                 #cleanup
                 #exit 1

I have read blogs about others running this script on dsee 6.x successfully, so thinking its a bug doesn't seem right.
If anyone wants me to test something or provide more info, i'd be happy to.
    Thanks for reading,

Thanks for the response. Sorry about not including the logs. I should have. I have gathered the full logs during the time idsconfig was trying to add the vlvindex entries. I did see that there where a few err=32 codes on the ADD operations on the entries that I had to add manually.
Here is one thing I did notice when I was adding the 4 entries manually. In each of the ldif files idsconfig creates, there are 2 entries as in the following example.
    dn: cn=example.edu_passwd_vlv_index,cn=example,cn=ldbm database,cn=plugins,cn=config
    objectClass: top
    objectClass: vlvSearch
    cn: example.edu_passwd_vlv_index
    vlvbase: ou=people,dc=example,dc=edu
    vlvscope: 1
    vlvfilter: (objectClass=posixAccount)
    aci: (target="ldap:///cn=example.edu_passwd_vlv_index,cn=example,cn=ldbm database,cn=plugins,cn=config")(targetattr="*")(version 3.0; acl "Config";allow(read,search,compare)userdn="ldap:///anyone";)
    dn: cn=example.edu.getpwent,cn=example.edu_passwd_vlv_index,cn=example,cn=ldbm database,cn=plugins,cn=config
    cn: example.edu.getpwent
    vlvSort: cn uid
    objectclass: top
objectclass: vlvIndex After idsconfig was done running the entry with the dn of "dn: cn=example.edu_passwd_vlv_index,cn=example,cn=ldbm database,cn=plugins,cn=config" was created, but the "dn: cn=example.edu.getpwent,cn=example.edu_passwd_vlv_index,cn=example,cn=ldbm" was not created.
This is weird because according to the logs (if i am reading them right) the add operation for the dn that was actually created seemed like it failed.

  • Is there a way? Some iPhone/iPhoto questions

to order the photos so that the latest photos in the past 12 mos are displayed?
The default seems to be oldest first, making it a chore to see recent photos. I have about 4600 photos on there and it's a lot of trouble to see the recent ones.
Also, imports from iPhone to iPhoto sometimes imports dupes even though Do Not Import has been selected. Is there anyway to eliminate these without individually selecting them and deleting?
A sips query could be use to determine dupes, but that would be outside of iPhoto and might screw up the indexing scheme.
Last item: earlier iPhoto created thumbnails that were indexed with and displayed with the full scale images. How can these be easily deleted?
    Any ides greatly appreciated.

I don't believe this can be changed with the iPhone but you don't make use of Albums with iPhoto transferring all or select Albums to the iPhone?
All album photos will be available in the main iPhoto Library with the iPhone - just as with iPhoto but you can select an album and view photos in that album only - it will still be oldest first but makes viewing select photos only with the iPhone easier along with the ability to sort through or view all photos available in all albums at the same time by selecting the Photo Library.

Are you deleting photos taken by the iPhone after being imported into iPhoto? I always delete all photos in the iPhone's Camera Roll after the iPhoto import process and any of these photos I want available on the iPhone, I create a new iPhoto album or place select photos into an existing album, etc. and then these photos are transferred back to my iPhone via the sync process.

Not sure about this one - are you using iLife 08 and if so, are the same thumbnails available/shown now?
