IPhoto constantly flips back to Last Import folder

When viewing photos in iPhoto v9.4.2 (710.42), no matter which folder I'm in, my view arbitrarily switches back to "Last Import".
Any reason why?  Any way to fix this?
Thanks
Annoyed...

Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If it does do the following: Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
     User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If the problem isn't replicated in the new library then your current library is the culprit. In that case  Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Close iPhoto and open the iPhoto Library package as shown in this screenshot:
Look inside the Auto Import folder and move whatever you find to the Desktop.  Do not many any other changes.
Launch iPhoto and it should not jump back to the last import smart album.  If there are any image files that you moved to the Desktop that you want and are not in the library then reimport them.

Sounds like you have a folder with an album named fred inside of it.  Folders can only hold other folders, albums, slideshows, etc. but not just photos.  So you must be sure to drop the photo directly onto the album titled fred that resides inside that folder otherwise it will create a new album.
So expand the folder so the fred album is visible and drop the new photo onto the album.

  • "Don't import duplicates" and question about the Last Import folder

*THE CLIP IMPORTING (TO IMOVIE) PROCESS*
Ever since the last time I uploaded clips and made movies with them, I have shot new footage. I never erased the clips that were in the Sanyo VPC-HD2000A.
This morning I uploaded the clips to my iMovie '11, including image stabilization. (Bypassed iPhoto '11 completely, on purpose.)
What caused me concern while the clips were uploading is that there were no prompts about +"only new clips, no duplicates"+ to be imported. There was one set of options saying "Importing checked, or Import checked," but the problem was that I saw nowhere that any of the clips in the box (I will call it the Sanyo Box) could be checked. Selected, yes, but checked, no. I tried to select all of the newly shot footage, but that was impossible. It was only possible to select one clip at a time.
I did not interrupt the file transfer because I did so once last month and it caused me problems.
I ended up with 36 files uploaded and imported.
*THE EVENT LIBRARY LAST IMPORT FOLDER*
_In the iMovie '11 Events Library, the Last Import folder contains clips that were uploaded last month to iMovie. If I am to understand the label, "Last Import" does not mean, "And also stuff from a previous import."_
I realize that having duplicates of clips can be solved by deleting clips, but I really want to know what is going on and also what ought to be going on. Shouldn't the Last Import folder contain only those clips that are in the most recent upload?
And why was there no prompt for all duplicates to be disregarded and not imported?
Did I possibly bollix up the preferences in my Sanyo VPC-HD2000A and did I accidentally tell it not to ask whether or not I want to import duplicates?
I can see that someone could say, "Make sure you delete all old clips before you shoot new footage," but that is an "of course." I need to know what happens when you keep clips in the camera and want to import only the new clips.
    -L

    No.
In LR3 it would ALWAYS pick up the duplicates if I inserted a card I'd just imported.
With no change to my workflow I'm now having instances of the same files being imported multiple times.

  • Iphoto 6 shows only the last imported photos, doesn't include previous pics

History- when I first got the computer I didn't understand how iPhoto accessed its photos, and deleted some of the content from the iPhoto folder directly - since then every once in a while I get a window that asks me to rebuild my cache - the apple employees at the genius bar told me that if I rebuilt my cache, that the thumbnails wouldn't match, and I could possibly loose photos. So I have not updated the cache in 4 years, and have not had any problems.
Recently, my computer was slowing down, so I took it to the apple store and had them help me remove everything from the computer and placed onto an external drive, and then wiped the computer by reinstalling the system. Since then I have run iPhoto through my external hd, and did not replace ANYTHING onto the computer - everything is on the external hd. had no problems for a year. After this last upload(about a week ago) to iPhoto I noticed that it caused all previous photos (10,000+) to disappear - the only ones that were in the library were the ones I just uploaded.
I then returned to the apple store and they used the option "create new library" to find the existing library.. but the computer was not even allowing the library file to be clicked on. So, for some reason the old photos are gone, and it wont allow the existing library to be chosen - yet there are still photos that it is accessing from that same library.
Now when I open iPhoto, I get a message that says "In this version of iPhoto, the thumbnails have been improved. Upgrading the thumbnails will take a while, depending on the number of photos in your library. Do you want to upgrade your thumbnails now?"
I am afraid that if I do this, it will cause the same problem of confusing the program, and not having the thumbnails match the iPhoto files, possibly causing me to loose photos.
Is this message the reason why I can't access the old photos in the library? How would you suggest I go about correcting this problem in a way that I don't loose photos?

I didn't understand how iPhoto accessed its photos, and deleted some of the content from the iPhoto folder directly
This corrupted your library - b continuing to use a corrupted library you have continued the problem and it sounds like it finally has come in to bite you
You can try using iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - to rebuild your library - this creates a totally new library so if the results are not acceptable you can go back to what you have
other than that you have no choice I am aware of except to start over - drag the iPhoto library to the desktop and launch iPhoto and create a new library - open the old corrupt iPhoto library and open the originals folder and drag each folder in it onto iPhoto recreating your rolls but losing all edits and other changes

  • Iphoto gets stuck on finishing last import.

I have this problem where iPhoto gets into a state where it won't quit, and won't let me import anything. If I try to empty the (iPhoto) trash it tells me I should "Wait until the import is finished". Only it isn't importing anything. So far my only solution to get it back to a usable state is to force quit it. Then it is good for another import, deleting the trash, or quiting.
Is there some other import process that I can kill to get iPhoto back into a useable state? I'm importing tiffs off disk.

I was having this same problem recently ie. iPhoto appeared to be in a loop (also 'non-responsive' in red type in the 'Force quit' dialogue under the Apple menu) at the end of supposedly importing large numbers of photos. I spent about 3 days trying to work out what was going wrong or whether there was a decent solution (read; wasted my time and generated stress). I'm posting this now in September 2012 because it might help someone, even Apple customer services, who are experiencing similar situations.
Also, word of warning, some people have suggested going into the iPhoto folder structure and moving stuff around in there etc. etc. It's not a good idea, really. You are basically playing with a very complex database and, most likely, you won't remember exactly what you did in there in order that you could undo it if something goes really wrong.
But I did dig into the iPhoto folders while that spinning icon was rotating endlessly while the iPhoto dialogue merely informs the user that it's 'finishing import'. What I discovered was that, when this is happening, iPhoto is actually still adding image files into the database, so, whatever you think, it's not in a loop at all. The problem is that when you're importing a huge amount of images at one time, like I was (approx. 50 000), that this 'finishing' process can take a long, long time...something like 20 hours for me. Well, after a couple of days I did manage to get my photos to open normally in iPhoto but it took a lot of patience.
So Apple, why couldn't you acknowledge this problem (which has been around it seems for around 3 years at least) and add a progress bar with 'remaining processing time' prediction that would appear during the 'finishing' process. This would surely also please iPhoto customers who really think that iPhoto is incapable of importing their images without crashing/looping and therefore giving up altogether/switching to other products.
Finally, now that all those images of mine are in the database iPhoto is insistant on analysing them for the face recognition function (which I don't use, don't want to use in future etc.). But it seems that you cannot turn off this function so I'm expecting that my Mac will now be eagerly processing all my images for faces for weeks or months to come, consuming processor time that I need for other things and burning unecessary electricity. (Actually it seems to really crash iPhoto at some point, if I leave iPhoto running overnight, for example).
Anyways, hope this post is useful to someone.

  • Iphoto not storing photos in Last 2 month folder

Since I upgraded to Os X 10.8 when I download photos from camera,  iphoto is putting the picture in the Last import folder but if you
download again from the camera a new  pictures the previous one do not appear anymore in the Last 2 months folder.( but  they are indeed in the Photo folder.)
Why? Basically my  Last 2 Months folder has only pictures before the upgrade to OS X.
    Any thoughts?

    iPhoto 09?
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Importing Folder of Photos from Desktop Some of Which are Already in iPhoto

I'm editing a slideshow for our school and I'm using some photos I took and some that others took. Some of the ones I took are already in iPhoto in various imports, but many are not, however I want to drag the whole folder, now on my desktop, into iPhoto and have it create a unique folder for these selections using both the photos in iPhoto and the new ones I'm importing with them.
In the past I've seen where photos dated earlier did not always end up at the end of the group, but will this entire folder, even the ones I already have in iPhoto end up in the "Last Import" or can I create a new iPhoto Album and then drag that desktop folder into it and have all those photos there, new and existing?
    Thanks!
    JoeL

    JoeL:
Make sure the checkbox indicated in the screenshot of iPhoto's Events preferences pane is configured like this. Then any folder of photos imported from the Finder into iPhoto will remain as one event.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Imovie source clips is missing, i had the videos on the last imported event and now they're gone? how do i recover this?

so i imported a few clips, i think i dragged them into imovie? i have forgotten by now because i did this a couple of weeks ago. these clips got into the "last import" in the event library. so without knowing that it would get lost somehow, i didn't put them anywhere else. i don't have a backup on another folder (because i thought it was save in the imovie folder) as it turned out, it is nowhere to be found now. there is no "last import" folder in the imovie events folder. and the yellow box that comes up when the cursor's on the warning sign says they're in the "new event" folder, but that's also nowhere to be found.
i am freaking out right now because it's a group project due this wednesday, i'm on the verge of crying.
is there anyway i can get these clips back?
i'm in the middle of scanning my trash with ulysoft data recovery. hopefully it's somewhere there.
    i'm going crazy right now.

  • How do I delete empty last import albums?

My iPad has suddenly developed a string of empty "Last Import" albums in iPhoto. How do I get rid of them?

Found the solution under "More like this"
iPhoto - delete greyed out albums
I found a solution to this.  Set up a photo card with 1 image. Import the image into a last import folder, keep the photo, change to album view, select the last import folder with the image, click select, select the image, and delete it.  The folder will be removed.  You need to do this once for every folder.  I had  over 100 of them and it took me under an hour.  But it worked.  Good luck!

  • "Last import": no replacement for this?

A friend emailed 15 photos that I exported to Photos. Problem: I can't find the photos, because they're probably scattered by date among my 20K+ photos. With iPhoto, I'd simply choose "Last Import" and then file then photos to albums, etc.  Now I can't even FIND them, much less add them to a slide show for presentation this week.
As with many users, I'm shaking my head and saying, "Seriously? Apple didn't think about this enough to present an obviously solution?"

problem:  Apple changed to Photos from iPhoto, but Mail's options for handling attached photos are still "save" and "export to iPhoto" (inconsistency)
if you do "export to iPhoto," it doesn't show up as Import (or in Last Import" in Photos)
I had to "Save" the email-attached photos to a separate folder on my Mac, then import them into Photos (then they show up on Last Import too)
very helpful:  with the sidebar open in Photos, I realized you can scroll down to Albums and find under that a folder called "iPhoto Events" that helps keep you sane after migrating from iPhotos
Are you using the native Mail.app? Then you should be able to "export to Photos".  I am seeing three export options in Mail, when I ctrl-click an attached photo:
Did you enable your current Photos library as the System Photos Library? Check the Preferences > General in Photos, while you are browsing your library. If "Use as System Photos Library" is grayed out, your settings are correct.  Then try, if quitting Photos and restarting the  Mac will help.
"if you do "export to iPhoto," it doesn't show up as Import (or in Last Import" in Photos)" -that is right, because you are saving to your iPhoto Library and not the Photos library.  You should be seeing the saved photos, when you launch iPhoto.
"very helpful:  with the sidebar open in Photos, ... "  I keep the sidebar open at all times. That makes it easy to drag and drop to albums and projects.

  • IPhoto 8.1.2 - on a teacher's iBook: Worked flawlessly 2 weeks ago. Now it continues to lock up, it often will not import scans, I can not rotate a picture - it just flips back and forth. HELP I need to get a project out!

I created a beautiful Keepsake book a week or so ago. It worked flawlessly. Since - I've had several problems (nothing has changed on the computer/system). iPhoto will frequently lock up causing me to force quit. Other times, upon opening, it says that I don't have permission or something to open it. It often is not importing a scan saying it is an unrecognizable format (it's what I used before). When trying to rotate a photo it keeps flipping back and forth and wont stay put.
    iPhoto 8.1.2
I've run Disk Utilities multiple times - fixes for about 1-2 scans/launches of iPhoto
    I've restarted the computer.
I've tried to update - but can't locate a version my computer will allow me to update to.
Using an HP C3180 scanner/printer --- that is also recently not working ---- locks up, takes FOREVER to scan and then show up on the desktop.
HELP ME!!!! We're trying to get 2 books out for our students before the end of the school year.

Sounds like your Library is corrupted to me. Simple solution: restore form your back up.
    Other than that:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Time Machine not backing up iPhoto "Last Import"

I had a computer failure and had to restore from Time Machine. Everything was perfect except some iPhoto photos (everything from "Last Import") were not restored. Saw from many other posts here that I am not alone.
After seeking advice in the iPhoto forum, and trying many different ways of trying to repair the iPhoto library (you can read the saga: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2765769), it became clear that Time Machine just never backed up those photos, so there was nothing to restore. (Album/event data was intact, so I see the album/event info, and sometimes the thumbnails, I just can't access any originals - I get the dreaded question mark icon).
I've done more testing on my machine (Macbook Pro 10.6.6 with iPhoto '09) - the directory with the last import photos within Pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals/ just never gets backed up by Time Machine until it is no longer the last import. Strangely, on an older Macbook we have (10.5 with iPhoto '08), the last imported directory is backed up by Time Machine immediately when the next backup occurs.
Is there a setting I can change somewhere? Or any other explanation of why this is happening? I lost 159 photos as a result, and this doesn't appear to be a fluke, others have this exact same problem. I realize there are other threads with this issue (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10705622&#10705622), but all the ones I have found are locked from replies, and none have really shed any light on my particular situation.
Any help is much appreciated! Trying to avoid repeating the lost photos if I ever need to restore from Time Machine again.
    Thanks,
    Jon

I'm sorry I missed your question, I've had my head down in work and not checking.
By Apple Backup I mean the application that Apple has had for yonks, with the Umbrella icon, it does seperate incremental backups to where ever you wish - iDisk, DVD/CD or HD - I have a FW drive that I use for Backup backups, and each week I back THOSE up to a DROBO 4 Tbs Mirror RAID (might sound paranoid but I have twice rebuilt one of my iPhoto libraries from these backups) using SilverKeeper from LaCie. This is with my main and biggest work MacPro - where all the most precious work lives.
The startup drive is backed up weekly by Superduper. Each application has qualities that I use for those specific events.
The reason I've been doing iPhoto this way is because some years ago there was an issue with how much of the library was backed up in a clone or incremental backup - I can't remember the specifics of it, but I used to use Carbon Copy Cloner and before that Rendezvous - Rendezvous went through a bad period and CCC kept giving me errors, reported errors, that might not have been important but I felt uncomfortable with it, hence the Backup scenario - I have found Backup really reliable for the past couple of years and same with SuperDuper. I'm sorry I am not helping you with your current issue though.
With our two Internet/Accounting Macs I use BOTH TM and Superduper.
