IPhoto constantly needs permission repairs

Hello everyone. I put a new hard drive into my mac. I used to have my iPhoto library on an external drive, but I put it on the new internal drive. Now every time I, or one of the other users, want to open iPhoto, it complains EVERY TIME "There is a problem accessing one or more files in your iPhoto library. Do you want iPhoto to repair permissions for this library for you?". We all click yes and it fixes permissions and it runs just fine. All photos seem to be there. If we quit iPhoto we have to go through this same routine any time we open it again. I've tried the command-option technique upon opening iPhoto and I've tried all the options to rebuild permissions, database, etc. It's all no help. Anyone have any idea what is going on and how to fix this?

If you want to repartition the hard drive so there's one partition just for the iPhoto Library you can do what you want. The partition would be the same an an external HD partition. However, you will have to make sure it's large enough to accommodate any library size increase in the future so you don't get locked of of the library and eventually have to get an external HD anyway.

Constantly need to repair disk using Recovery HD to get Lion 10.7.2 to boot

I have a Macbook Pro 17" 2.8ghz I7 with 8gb of ram, OS X Lion 10.7.2, model series MacbookPro6,1....
Every time i reboot the computer or turn it on i get past the gray screen with the apple, it begins to load my desktop but stops just before it finishes loading everything. I can see my background image, some of my desktop icons, anywhere from 1/4 - 1/2 of my icons at the top, then i get the pinwheel and it doesnt progress any further than that.
The only way that i can get the computer to boot after this is to hold down the power button, wait for it to turn off... wait 20 seconds, reboot into the Recovery HD and use the disk utility to repair disk and repair permissions on Macintosh HD. This usually works, but one time i actually had to download a new copy of lion. After i repair disk & permissions, i reboot the computer and it responds like nothing has happened. My problem is that i do not want to have to constantly repair the disk and permissions every time i reboot the computer.
I did have one problem before all of this began, but it was about a month before this started occuring. I sent a bunch of unneeded documents and duplicate files to the trash as well as a couple of programs that didnt work anymore using appcleaner. When i tried to empty the trash, it deleted all but one file, or should i say most of the file. It was Dragon Dictate... it deleted everything from the main app package except for a plugin file. The plugin apparantly took up 0 bytes on the disk, and nothing i could do would allow me to delete the file. Finder froze every time i tried to delete the file, or should i say hung at the emptying trash window. Finder was still working. I could still open windows and move files around, however, i couldnt get the trash to empty. I left the screen up all night into the next afternoon, and it still hadnt deleted the file. The only way i could get it to not hang was to remove the file from the trash, and delete what else i had to delete. The only way i was able to get trash to stop hanging was to force relaunch finder by going to Finder>>Force Quit...>> select finder>> relaunch. Sometimes finder would relaunch, and sometimes it wouldnt. The only guarantee that i had to relauch finder was to reboot the computer. Eventually i jsut moved the file to a folder named Can not delete..... Now a month later i have to repair the drive each tiem i want to reboot the computer.
I know the drive isnt failing because i dual boot to windows, and that works flawlessly. No problems with reading/writing, other permissions, hardware, software, bluetooth, network, monitor, sound, camera.... nothing wrong on the windows side.

Your problems started when you used AppDelete, it searches for files and can accidentally delete some files as well.
You should never use such a program, it's no subsitute for the developers uninstaller.
Because your issues reside in the Applications folder, a global use, your going to have to perform a backup, erase and resintall of Lion, all your programs and return of files from backup.
As you learned, a OS X overwrtie install isn't going to work.
Also when you use Disk Utility to Erase the Lion Parititon, use the Erase>Security Opiton> Zero aspect, it takes longer but maps off failing sectors which may be responsible for your issues and ones in the future.
Map off as many as these failing sectors as possible, with Zero Erase and Erase Free Space once in awhile. SSD owners need not apply.

I constantly need to repair permissions, hundreds need repairing weekly

Hi, this is not a new problem with my MacBook Pro, and I have recently encounter the same problem whilst trying to fix a friends MacBook Pro after she approached me with the same issue. I have had a mac in new form or another since 1994 so without being a certified Mac technician, I know my way around pretty well. I use my mac all day every day and am always on grand to help my friends with theirs so I'm totally baffled by this issue.
Each week I have to repair my permissions, in fact if I use it more that usual then it will be a disk utility fix in 2 or 3 days, the permissions that need to be fixd vary depending on what programmes I have been using, itunes comes up more than most. After a few months of this I decided that the hard drive must bat fault so, having the old one still in warranty, brought a new one, backed it up and returned the old one to the store hoping to get a refund, they tested it and found no fault with the drive... So I reformatted it and cleaned it and have had no problems with it since it's in a hard case and used as an external. Again after a few weeks I have the same permissions problem back again on the new drive... So I diced to update the operating system, now running 10.8.5, it's made no difference. I still have fix my permissions every couple of days as it get he dreaded rainbow wheel and my work flow becomes impossible. So my fiend came to me with her MacBook Pro, I much newer model than men and told me of the dreaded spinning wheel . I fixed her permissions and then again in a few days time the spinning wheel was back. I changed her hard drive too and the problem persisted the same as my own.
Please can someone help me figure this out ... Why am I getting these constant permission issues

Hi. Yes I know of the ones I can safely ignore, but I'm talking about hundreds of permissions that need to be repaired every few days and the reason why I run disk utility is because my programmes won't run properly and every action is greeted by a minutes worth of rainbow wheel. That is when I rerun disk utility to find yet again a hundred or more permissions that have to be repaired and continue to have to be repaired.

My iMac crashes using iPhoto, the database constantly needs repair, and upgrading software patches causes the screen to hang

I am not sure what is going on. I have kept current with all upgrades and now when I attempt upgrades my system will hang on the white screen, forcing me to turn the machine off and on.
iPhoto has been really buggy (latest version) - keeps telling me that I need to repair my photos. Last night I was working on a photo book and it crashed twice.
Once it rebooted the iMac, the second time while uploading the book it crashed iPhoto.
Since this is past apple care - I am not sure what to do. I am in the US and I can't find any information on pricing for a visit to the genius bar.
The only thing I have going on with this machine is two seperate user accounts that access a shared iPhoto and Music library on the shared portion of the HD.

This happened a few weeks ago and I have been fumbelling around trying to fix it. I have no backup servers or shared access. My iPhone and iPad 'used to' pump pictures via iCloud but this has stopped.

Please bear with me as I am very new to this subject.
1: Using a MacBook Air OSX 10.7.5 and it is WiFi connected to a Time Capsule.
2: Overnight I have done a complete back-up. Checked the data files and all correct.
3: I can open the files on the TC except for the iPhoto Library as I want to check visually that they are there. All 2,388.
4: The iPhone Library on the TC will not allow me to look in.
5: the iPhoto Library on the MBA allows me access and I can view etc all the 2,388.
Q1: So why can I not look into the TC's iPhone Library? Or how do I open that library so I can look in?
Q2: how can I export data back from the TC to the MBA if ever I needed to do that?

Iphoto user permission repair

I recently shared my iphoto library with another user on my Macbook. Now every time either one of us opens iphoto (when it is closed in the other's account) it asks to "repair user permission". Do we have to do this each time now? Also, this requires Photostream to re-upload pictures which is tedious.

Click somewhere on your Desktop, to bring the Finder forward. Then open the Finder's Preferences "Finder > Preferences"
In the "General" tab of the Preferences select everything you want to see on your Desktop.
Do the same for your Sidebar.
The "Permissions" problem is more tricky. Each time one of you repairs the permission of the iPhoto library, you make yourself the owner and the other user will need to repair the permissions again to be able to writs to the shared iPhoto Library or to edit a photo.

Sharing is best done by putting the iPhoto library onto a separate disk partition or an external drive. Then you can set the "Ignore Ownership on this volume" flag, and you do not need to repair permissions. This flag is set from the "Get Info" panel. Select the Disk Parition or external volume, press "⌘I" for "Get Info", and reveal the "Sharing and Permissions" brick of the panel. Click the padlock icon, authorize, and enable the flag:
Make sure, any drive or partition you are using for your iPhoto Library is formatted "MacOS X Extended (Journaled). If you want to use a drive previously used with Windows, reformat it using Disk Utility.

Disable Photo Stream in iPhoto's preferences and then go back and reenable it. See if that will jump start the process. If that doesn't help try this: make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.

3 - launch iPhoto check its preferences to meka sure all is as you expect and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

Do you have a back up? What version of iPhoto do you have? Assuming 09 or later:
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

HT1310 Ongoing permission repair problems --- is there a way to prevent or limit them from happening?

I seem to have Ongoing permission repair problems; I repair them (and there's lots to repair) and then not even a week or two later I check permissions and again huge repair job needed. Any idea why this keeps happening? Am I chasing symptom of larger/different issue?

The best thing for you to do is stop repairing permissions unless you are getting permissions errors relating to system files.
You are presently getting what sound like recurring but innocuous messages you can safely ignore. But unless you post something here to see, we have no clue what you are seeing.

In 10.4, Permission Verify and Repair took about a minute. After the latest Updates - iTunes and Front Row - Permission Verify and Repair became an astounding 40 minute exercise. And whatever was in those Updates is seriously clogging performance. Upgrading to 10.5 was hard enough on my little iMac, but this latest is almost more than it can pull. Now, before we get into "you don't need to Repair Permissions" more than once in a great while, I've found over the years that Safari won't run worth a hoot, unless I Repair at least once a day. Video clips like YouTube are just out of the question. Yes, I "Reset" Safari on a regular basis, keep the cache as empty as I can without becoming obsessive. And no, I can't afford additional memory even if there were anyone around qualified to crack the case and install it properly.
Is anyone else having this Permissions problem, and if so, what the heck? And how do I remedy or undo the damage?

Okay. Went, read, unsatisfactory opinions posted on those threads.
I wouldn't care a fig about this except, Safari doesn't run worth a tinker's hoot unless I once a day Repair Permissions. That's the only fix I've found for Safari after years of struggling with the browser. Repair Permissions and reboot, and Safari works great for about an hour, though it still struggles like crazy with any kind of Java (and animated ads). I've been through Tech Support (answer:buy more memory or buy a newer model Mac), I've talked to Mac User Groups, an exercise in futility, I've read everything I can find and the problem is still only resolved by Repairing Permissions.
Surely I'm not alone, and surely there is an answer to this. What if I delete Front Row? (chances are slim and none I'll ever have enough Mac to use an entertainment hub)

Volume needs minor repair

I've been having problems with opening applications and some websites such as itunes, quiktime, mirosoft word, iphoto, bascially most programs won't open. These programs out of the blue wouldn't open, I can't think of anything I did before these problems started. For instance I click the icon it bounces once a black arrow appers under it and then nothing happens. The When i try opening them from the application folder some might flash, but then nothing happens. I tried removing the plist files, but that didn't help. Then I ran disk permissions and nothing came up. Then I ran disk utilities from the Mac OS X install disk and did repair disk and this is what came up.

Unfortunately this error (failure on exit) means that the problem is more than minor. Here is what you can do:
1) Before doing anything I would strongly suggest backing up the data on your hard drive. Use instructions in this article
2) You may be able to use 3rd party disk utilities such as Disk Warrior (made by Alsoft) to repair this disk's directory. I say may, as there is a chance that it will not be successful.
3) If the utilities you try are unsuccessful, or you elect not to use them, you will need to erase and restore your hard drive, thus creating a new directory for the disk. After this, update your OS and applications, then put your data back on the hard drive using the steps in the article in step 1.

'OS X needs to repair...' - Creative Cloud dir error

I have recently updated to Mavericks (dreading the response now!) and my MacPro is now in a constant cycle of error messages stating:
'OS X needs to repair your library to run applications. Type in password to allow this,'
- which I do and nothing happens.
I also have an error:
'Error starting Creative Cloud
cookies dir: cannot make folder /cookies: Permission denied (error 13)'
Please can someone advise. And of course, it's ridiculously urgent.

Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.

If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take a few minutes to run, or perhaps longer if you have literally millions of files in your home folder. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password dialog will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
In the dialog, select the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if it's not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if it's not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select

Permission repair been running for almost 2 days now? What happens if i stop it? What to do? Please help. Thanks in advance.

My imac wont start up after it asked me to restart the system. Prior to that, a message showed saying i dont have enough space on my start up disk. Now after i restart, it wont go pass the gray screen at start up with the apple logo. I restarted it several times, unplugged power from wall and still wont go pass the gray screen. I am now start up with the installation disk that came with imac and running permission repair( read it from other posts). Permission repair says 8 min till completion and its been running for 2 days now. What else can i do? What happens if i end permission repair and do repair disk? Will disk help solve my start up problem? Please help :( Thanks in advance...

You shouldn't be running Permissions repair booted from the install disc, in the first place. Stop it, shut down and Safe Boot. Hold Shift key down at startup chime. Give it longer to boot than usual. If you can get it to boot up, you must delete some things to make room. Likely candidates are in your home folder, music, movies, documents, pictures. The Safe Boot will, if possible, repair your drive.
If you don't want to lose them completely, you need to move them to an external drive. You should maintain at least 15-20% free of drive capacity.
You will likely have introduced real errors by repairing Permissions booted from the install DVD. You can fix them by running Permissions repair if and when you are in Safe Boot.

Need to Repair Disk Permissions Everyday? Same errors each time.

I have a White MacBook 4,1 - 2.1 Ghz 3 MB Cache, 800 MHz Bus. It seems like I need to repair the permissions everyday. Every time I do I get the exact same errors, when I start up off the Mac OS X dvd I get no errors under repair disk, but the same errors under repair permissions.

There is no error. You could repair permissions continuously and these same notifications will show up.
Recent updates to iPhoto, Front Row, and an update for RAW compatibility have resulted in these permissions differences. Rather than replacing the old permissions with a new one, the system sees a symbolic "link" (the L you see in front of the permissions).
Nothing is wrong with your machine--we're all getting these notifications. Hopefully a system update will change the permissions for us in the future.
