IPhoto copying my pictures when I add them.. How to disable?

I don't like how iPhoto organizes the images. I often use Photoshop and other apps to get my photos and change them, add to them, remove from them, etc. and navigating the iPhoto:Year:Month:Day: is hard, much harder than my nice Pictures:Camera Name:Roll/Set: method. Is there any way to use iPhoto to browse the images, but not allow it to copy them when I import images? Right now I have two copies of all my images. Which means I'm using 12gb+ for my images when I only should be using 6. Help please!

No. To manage image files iPhoto has to copy it into it's own folder system (iPhoto Library Description).
iPhoto is designed for the user to do all his editing and organizing from within iPhoto. You can set Photoshop to be the default editor when you double click on a photo in iPhoto. The only caveat to that is you must not change the file name, extension or location saved. If you create a layered image in PS then you must save it to the desktop and import from there. All subsequent edits of that file with PS can be done normally. If you always upload your image files to the desktop before importing into iPhoto you can batch change the extension to .psd before importing. Then even your first edit with PS can go normally. You may be asked on the first save if you want to replace the existing .psd file of the same name. Just say yes and go from there.
After importing into iPhoto you can delete the original files so you only have one copy on your HD.
Otherwise you might consider using iView MediaPro. It lets the user create and maintain the folder/organizational system of his choice.

I blocked something for pictures on Facebook and now can't see anyones pictures when they download them, how do I get them back ?

I didn't want to see some postings, so I was told to block the pictures on the postings.....after I did that, we now cannot see anyones pictures when they download them on to facebook... it only affects us when on our desk computer not our ipod.

If images are missing then check that you aren't blocking images from some domains.
*Check the permissions for the domain in the current tab in "Tools > Page Info > Permissions"
*Check that images are enabled: Tools > Options > Content: [X] Load images automatically
*Check the exceptions in "Tools > Options > Content: Load Images > Exceptions" (search fbcdn.net)
You can use these steps to check if images are blocked:
* Open the web page that has the images missing in a browser tab.
* Click the website favicon ([[Site Identity Button]]) on the left end of the location bar.
* Click the "More Information" button to open the "Page Info" window with the Security tab selected (also accessible via "Tools > Page Info").
* Go to the <i>Media</i> tab of the "Tools > Page Info" window.
* Select the first image link and scroll down through the list with the Down arrow key.
* If an image in the list is grayed and there is a check-mark in the box "<i>Block Images from...</i>" then remove that mark to unblock the images from that domain.

In my desktop my photos are 29GB, but in my ipad it is 8.8, why is this? and also will my photo's compress when i add them to iPhoto in my air?

Arrow in bottom left allows you to multi select. After you choose your photos, you can hit the delete button that appears in the bottom right hand corner. Or, you can hit the cancel button in the rop right and not delete them

Have you tried restarting or resetting your iPad?

Hello everyone! First post here. I have searched endless amount of forums and finally decided to post my problem.
Today my images from Iphoto went missing. When I tried to open the iphoto app, it gave me an error that the files were unreadable and therefore not imported.
Then I tried to rebuild iphoto by holding down option and command. I tried every option and it would still show my iphoto as 0 pictures.
I tried to view my images by going to the show packages option but it doesnt display the masters or originals files..
lastly I downloaded the Iphoto library manager and it was able to detect my pictures, but I could not see them or import/rebuild the library.
Does anyone have a solution to this problem? When I tried to view the images it also shows a white triangle with a question mark in the middle. I beleiev the caption also says missing.tiff. Any help would be appreciated. I just recently got my macbook air so I have not done any backups.

I also noticed that my photo booth pictures got deleted as well. I'm trying to recover images through a recovery software and it does give me the option to look at the masters file, but there is nothing in there...
Also how could the Iphoto manager show that I have the 900 pictures? even though I am unable to actually see the image.. Could it be these pictures formats were changed somehow?

Why Are the Text Boxes I Create in a Layout Not Editable When I Add Them?

I've made some chapter and section layouts and in the layouts panel when I select them the text boxes are red and editable. But when I apply the layout to a page in my book, everything is greyed out. Nothing is locked, but now my layouts are useless.
Have anyone else had this issue? Am I just creating the text boxes incorrectly? What's the problem?

I figured it out but this is a HUGE gotcha for anyone else this happens to.
While editing layouts, there is an option in the Layout Tab in the Inspector called "Editable on Pages Using This Layout". This MUST be checked for each object you want to change in the pages you add to a book.

IPhoto has duplicate pictures when browsing iPhone photos

It's really strange. I plug in my iPhone and iPhoto displays duplicate of all photos, but my iPhone continues to only have 1 copy.
I kept trying to upload all 5,700 photos but iPhoto kept freezing on me. I re-opened it to try again and again then I noticed the dupes.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You don't need to burrow into the iPhoto Library package via the Finder to find photos for use outside iPhoto. Read Terence Devlin's treatise on file access for use outside of iPhoto. It's the best explanation of how to do what you want available.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

How to retrieve Facebook pictures when I deleted them from iPhoto?

Hi. I'm new to Mac and not very techy. Anyway, I synced my Facebook account to iPhoto and for some reason, I thought that iPhoto was just a back up of my facebook photos. I deleted the facebook pictures on iPhoto and now, I have lost all of my Facebook albums. Is there any way I can retrieve my Facebook Albums? They were 5 years worth of memories.

REstore you backujp of the iPhoto library form before you did this
and if you want photos only on Facebook then do not use iPhoto to upload them - iPhoto as documented does a two way sync with FB and any chnage made on FB or on iPhoto is syn=ced to the other platform

IPhoto copying unedited pictures into modified folder!

Hi everybody!
recently I've noticed the size of my iPhoto library growing without me adding any photos, so I checked the folders and discovered that whole events had been copied into the modified folder without me even having edited them!
I marked all those pictures and clicked on "back to original", but when I checked the modified folder again, I could watch while the same pictured were being copied in there again!!
Does anyone else have this problem and if yes, how can it be stopped?

First try deleting the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder. Launch iPhoto and try importing again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
Next, if necessary, log into another user account on your Mac, launch iPhoto and import some test images to see if the situation is repeated. If so then a reinstall of iPhoto is warranted. To do so you'll have to first delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder, reinstall iPhoto from the disk it came on and reapply the latest updaters.

Does iPhoto save original picture when it has been cropped?

Hi, I have editd some pictures to crop them. Once done, I don't seem to find a saved copy of the original picture. Does iPhoto keep the original somewhere and if yes where? Or is this normal behaviour and I should "duplicate" my photo to keep an original and play with the copy when cropping? Thanks for the feedback, ML

Yes, iPhoto saves your Original pic. All operations - cropping, editing, fixing, exporting - are carried out on a copy of the file.
iPhoto does not show you the “before” and “after” side by side. If you want to compare then simply hold the shift key. (Remember you need to be in edit mode to for this to work.)
You can remove the edits by going Photos -> Revert to Original.

Why do my photos zoom in when I add them to a video?

I am not experienced at all with premiere pro at all. i have to just splice videos and photos together. My videos come out fine but when I try to add photos to this video it like zooms in or takes only a portion of the picture and adds it. Its very strange. Like I said though I do not really know Premiere Pro so work with me here if this is a dumb question X)

Probably because your sequence is 1920X1080 or smaller and your images are in the neighborhood of 4000X3000 or more.
I suggest that you just scale them down with the Scale parameter of the Motion effect. Once you do that to one of them, you can copy it, and then "Paste Attributes" on the others to make them the same size. That way you can adjust them a little later if you wish.
The other way is to set them to "Scale to Frame Size" but that resamples them and you can't zoom back in without losing quality. Also, if they are the wrong shape (quite likely) then you will be stuck with bars on the sides.

In iPhoto on your computer, add the photos in the iCloud section to the Events, Faces, Places section before you delete them. In the future you can make that happen automatically for new photos by going to iPhotos > Preferences > iCloud and setting Automatic Import to on.

IPhoto - mismatch in pictures when trying to insert two-page panoramas.

I am trying to give iPhoto a try by making my photobook from my vacation to the USA in iPhoto. Since I like full control over the page lay-outs I am designing all pages in Photoshop (CS3), en then insert them in iPhoto. All pages for my iPhoto book are therefore set as the full frame 1 photo lay-out, in which I copy my photoshop pages.
I looked up the recommended resolution, and it told me to use files of 3338x2587px, with 300 DPI. I made a photoshop document of 6676x2587px so I could design two pages as one, which would give me the option to insert a photo that is spread over both pages. However, when I insert the file into iPhoto, it does not match exactly. When I resize the resolution to 6636x2587, it does.
Question:
Do you recommend using the first resolution, which is ok in theory but does not show up right in iPhoto's preview, or
Do you recommend using the second option, which shows up perfectly aligned within iPhoto?
Second question, related to color profiles;
Should I embed the sRGB IEC61966-2.1 color profile in my photoshop exports to make sure the colors in the final printed book are the same?

I recommend using the one that look the way you want it -- when I do this I pay no attention to the photos size and just place it twice - one on each side of the book and adjust to look like I want - the results have been fine for me.
To some degree over thinking things actually causes issues - iPhoto is designed as a consumer product and works best when used that way - Most people doing that love the results - some people who over adjust and over edit photos are disappointed - not sure if it is because of the over editing or just that they have much higher expectations - but in any case that is what I've observed here - and the books are great

IPhoto pics are black when I open them in iMovie HD

Hi there,
When we are in iMovie HD, we go to media, iPhoto, and pick a picture. But then, when we insert it into our movie, it turns black. Can anyone help right away. We would like to figure this out right,as we are in the middle of a project.

Hi momto11 - (I think you are actually using iMovie HD 6, for which there is a different iMovie forum.)
I wonder if you have done some editing of the pics subsequent to the original placing of them? iMovie 6 has a bug which causes this to happen if the iMovie trash has been emptied.
If that is your problem, then you must do one of these:
1. Do not empty the trash.
2. Drag the original version of the pic from the iMovie trash back onto the Clips Pane.
3. Re-import the original from iPhoto or where-ever.
Of course the cause of your particular problem may be quite different - only guessing!
Perhaps you could explain exactly the steps you are making.
