IPhoto corrupt in all drive disks.
I installed iLife 9 and have been using iPhoto 8.1.1 successfully, in conjunction with iPhoto Library Manager, in several volumes. Quite suddenly I have found the application corrupted in all of them: when I try to open any with any library it will open, but then at some point it reverts to the spinning beachball and I have to force quit. I have tried to rebuild, with both Manager and iPhoto methods, but am not able to do so. For the first time I have noticed an icon "printing" under "recent" in the resource section, and when I click on it the program stalls with the beachball.
I am inclined to dump and reinstall iPhoto from the iLife CD, but am not sure if that should be my first step. Can anyone explain what has happened and suggest a cure?
TD: I have had iPhoto installed in several of the volumes, but since I have had this problem I have removed it from all of them except this one. I believe it is the application that is the problem, because I use iPhoto Library Manager to switch between libraries and I get the behavior described above in any of the libraries that I have tried to use. It is difficult for me to believe that 5 or 6 individual libraries could have suddenly become corrupted all at once. It is easier to believe that I could have made some move that caused that aforementioned printer icon to show up in the source section of iPhoto. I may never know what I did to cause it, but that won't matter if I can get the use of iPhoto back again. I've come to think that a reinstallation from the iLife CD is the only hope. If anyone has any advice for or against that I'd like to hear it. Thanks for your interest - RF.

I keep all driver disks in one place which makes it easier to find what I need when I need it.
I recently downsized my case and installed a MSI H77ma-G43 mobo, my wife's PC has a MSI H61M-P31 mobo.
I became necessary to reinstall Windows to my better half's PC and accordingly a few drivers also. Imagine my annoyance when I discovered that for some inexplicable reason MSI do not print the motherboard model number on the driver disk label.
Is this because all MSI drivers are universal or am I missing something here? How am I supposed to work out which driver disk is the correct one for the board I need it for?I can't say for 100% certainty by I think the MSI Intel system driver disc is pretty much generic and the MB will simply extract the particular files needed from it. Naturally the later MB files will be on the newest disc and there should be some way for you to determine which of the discs is the newest. I figure that as I had 3 discs at one point and they all looked the same on the label. I 'explored' each disc and the newest one had the same files as the oldest one plus the newer files for the newer MBs. The discs were for an X58, H55 & P67 MBs.
Explore the discs and you should be able to determine which is which as the one for the H77 will have a few more files that the one for the H61.
That being said the H77MA disc should work for the H61M. Like FG said , after you sort them out get a Sharpie and mark the discs & sleeves for future ID. -
I want to back up my photos, but they are all contained in iPhoto. Is it sufficient just to copy the entire iPhoto folder onto a separate disk drive or should I do something else?
The iPhoto library contains every thign you ned to use iPhoto - database files and two or three versiosn of each photo plus face thumbnails and other information
TO have a backup you need a copy of the iPhoto library
However to backup just your photos or to use them on another computer withour iPhoto select the photo and export (file menu ==> export) to a folder and put that folder on teh disk

You have to duplicate the photos unless you want to use PSE as the external editor for iphoto. In iphoto, your photos are stored in a proprietary library, which should never be messed with by programs other than iphoto. Writing to the iphoto library from outside iphoto is the fastest way to corrupt it and lose all the pics it contains.
So you can either set PSE as your external editor and send the photos from within iphoto, or you must export the photos from iphoto to be able to use them outside that program. -
I have just installed Photoshop Elements for a MAC. MY photos were in iPhoto, I have 47,000 pictures and my drive on my Mac laptop is not large enough. I store my photos in iPhoto on an external drive. Can I store all my photos on an external drive when using Photoshop Elements? If so, in what format should they be stored in? I do I move them from iPhoto to the new storage location? How do I call them up in organizer? And how do I call them up to Edit? I do not want to store any pictures on my Apple Mac laptop. I want to store pictures on several external devices.
Yes you can store images on an external hard dive and have them referenced in Organizer. It’s best to export copies to separate folders/subfolders and that will ensure iPhoto does not get corrupted.
Alternatively you could continue to use iPhoto with the Elements Editor set up in the iPhoto prefs as your external editing app. Then there is no need to use Organizer and no need to duplicate your images.
You can then call up photos directly from iPhoto as normal with the additional option e.g.
Double-click on a thumbnail to edit in iPhoto editor.
Control (right) - click on a thumbnail to edit in the elements app.

Must have done something wrong..
1. formatted external disk to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) - required a partition, but that went fine. Entire new external disk was included in the partition formatted to Mac OS Extneded (journaled).
2. moved iPhoto library to new external disk
3. Holding Option key down, opened iPhoto
4. Choose library feature appeared, however when new library function option appeared and "choose library" selected, the iPhoto folder appearing in the new external drive was greyed out and not able to be selected. Therefore the default library remains the original iphoto library on the Mac.
I've moved the original iphoto library to the trash and then tried to start iPhoto. A message comes up that the iPhoto is in the trash and needs to be pulled out before iPhoto can start (clearly the new iphoto library on the external drive is not being seen.
Can anyone suggest where I went awry? Thanks!Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7 or later: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.
Then try select it again. -

Before you copy the library to the external drive, make sure it has the correct file system. The file system needs to be MacOS Extended (Journaled). If the drive has a different file system,, save the content to a different drive and reform the drive, just like described in this document for Aperture:

Since the average 0.9 megapixel JPEG photo file of normal graphic complexity stored at a high quality compression setting is 125-135 KBs in size, I would have to assume any QT video files you created of more than a fraction of a second in duration were most likely saved as "reference" files to only be 50-150 KBs. Basically, a reference file is q QT (MOV) file that tells a video player how to play data that is still stored in its original source file container(s). For instance, you could trim and merge a number of files together and save the result as a "reference" file that takes up very little room on your hard drive. Or, you could post fles to a server and create a "reference" file that is small enough to be sent as an email attachment that plays the uploaded data on someone else's computer as long as they are connected to the Internet. Unfortunately, for these reference files to work, all of the resources referenced within the file must continue to exist in their proper locations in order to be found and played by the reference. Since you did not indicate what "but they won't play" really means here or how you actually "moved" your iPhoto library files to the external drive, I can only make some "educated guesses" at this point. (BTW: for future reference, iPhoto has a built-in function that allows you to copy your library to one or more back-up locations and then connect to them by default when iPhoto opens or switch source libraries at will within the opened application.)
If you created reference files and saved them to an external drive, you should be getting an error message telling you the app needs to know where the source files are located so the reference file can re-connect to the resource data. If the original files were also saved, then simple navigate to the source files in oder to tell the app where they are now located. If the source files were deleted as part of the reformatting process, then you are up the proverbial creek whithout a paddle with little or no hope of doing anything about this issue. (I.e., reformatting and then re-installing a system drive usually means you would have little hope of recovering the specific "lost" data you want as there is always a good chance that some of the data segments were overwritten during the process.) -
When I try to drag the iphoto library to the external disk a forbidden (circle with slash through it) icon appear. Why do you suppose it is preventing me from adding to external drive? These are pictures I have taken. I believe it cannot find the original file. Please help.

My Intel iMac with 4 ext daisy chained drives freezes up sometimes. If I unplug all drives there is no problem. Also Disk Warrior gives me the error msg (2154) that in Time Machine, (which is on a lg.(1TB ext. HD only 1/4 used space) error msg me that there is not enough memory. I am using Lion 10.7.2.

My startup disk is full?!?! This has been happening for a while and I have dumped 4500 jepegs from iPhoto onto an external drive to try and free up space. I am still recieving the "Startup disk full" message. What more can I do?!?!
Did you empty the Trash?
What size hard drive & how much free space. You should always have a minimum of 10-15% or more free space?

I plan to design a "file chooser" by myself because
the one provided by JDK1.3 has a serious bug:
when the signed applet open a file chosser, the program will crash.
I want to list all available disk drive ID.
Does anyone know how to do this??

They should, yes. You should have a full and complete backup as well, of course.

I am trying to import a few new photos from a 8gb card but Iphoto keeps reloading all the files that I have already downloaded AGAIN! This is new behaviour! I have the box ticked to Hide photos already unloded but it is grayed out so couldn't unselect if I wanted to. I've looked at the directions and they seem to say NOT to select the files on the card and drag them into Iphoto. It is taking hours to reload files that are already there. Any ideas? Cheers.
