Iphoto crash in Leopard
As soon as I upgraded to 10.5, I have been having trouble with iphoto (05)
The program crashes (no error message) as soon as I start editing my pix. Sometimes i can make a couple changes before it crashes, but it is usually within a couple minutes. It also rotates the pictures sometimes, including upside down.
HELP! This is a program I used to use all the time - my pictures are seriously backing up waiting to be fixed up!
Rachel - I've had the same problem with iPhoto 05 in Leopard. Looks like the database was corrupted by an old beta install of Mozy. I had good luck using the free version of iPhoto Library Manager and an external drive to rebuild my library (instructions here), even when iPhoto's rebuild feature wouldn't work. This preserves all your categories and metadata. You can use iPhoto Library Manager to open the rebuilt library in iPhoto to test it out. If it works, delete the contents of your iPhoto library folder, and copy the contents of the rebuilt folder into it.
Just a gentle reminder that backing up your photos before starting anything like this is always a good idea.

IPhoto crashes on Snow Leopard, Memory Deallocation Bug
I have on the order of 10 Macs. I also have several sizeable iPhoto libraries that I work on regularly. The libraries are on removable media that can be moved between different computers (eSata and Firewire drives).
For some reason, many months after Snow Leopard was introduced, I still cannot use any of my photo libraries under the new OS. Every time I try, I get a crash almost immediately. I have reported this bug to Apple many many times. If you look at the stack dump, it is quite obviously a memory deallocation bug that causes a stack overflow. I cannot comprehend how Apple has been unable to fix this 5 months after I first reported it and how it can still be there.
Yesterday, I purchased a brand new MacBook 15" with an i7 processor and a 500GB SSD. I was hoping that the bug in iPhoto or the OS had finally been fixed and eagerly loaded one of my photo libraries onto the built-in 500GB SSD of the new MacBook.
Alas, it took less than an hour to get iPhoto to crash - while it was searching for Faces. This is absurd. I have been using this same library across many different computers running Leopard as recently as two days ago. The library works on any computer running Leopard and crashes any computer running Snow Leopard almost immediately.
Unfortunately, it also doesn't appear to be a specific problem related to the file structure of this particular library. I have at least 4 iPhoto libraries, containing entirely different photos, that all manage to crash Snow Leopard and all run for days of nonstop work on Leopard.
Apple, please fix this. This is ridiculous. Just look at the crash report below and you can see what is wrong. And I have been sending full detailed crash dumps to Apple on this at least 20 times including the full binary.

IPhoto crashes during Flickr set up
I installed the iLife 09 family suite on my computer then on my husband's (iMac 2.4 GHz intel core duo). iPhoto works flawlessly on my husband's. On mine however, it started out with the same problem others have posted: iPhoto crashing (or closing unexpectedly) upon starting. I followed the advice in a post to turn off AirPort and then start iPhoto turning AirPort on again once iPhoto was running. This seemed to solve that problem.
My problem now is that iPhoto crashes (or closes unexpectedly) when I try to "set up" Flickr to work through iPhoto. I click the Flickr button and it brings up Safari to have me log into our Flickr account then I am supposed to select the "ok, I'll allow it" button - but somewhere in there iPhoto always crashes in the background. The log below is from one of these occasions (I have only pasted what looked important to me).

I've tried to publish to MobileMe as well, and iPhoto always crashes during that scenario as well.
I used my husband's computer to test the Flickr feature using the same library my computer was working with - his published perfectly.
Here are the troubleshooting techniques I have used (all have yielded the same crashing of iPhoto during MobileMe/Flickr setup):
tried both with and without the iPhoto Update 8.0.2
tried restoring iPhoto 08 from Time Machine (can publish to MobileMe even as recent as the day I installed 09); then reinstalled iPhoto 09
tried reinstalling iPhoto 09 while iPhoto 09 was still on the computer
tried deleting the the com.apple.iPhoto.plist (but not the com.apple.iphotomosaic.plist)
tried rebuilding photo library with all 5 options selected
tried resetting Safari with all 9 options selected
have opened and saved a file in Garage Band (I know I'm reaching now)
tried starting with other libraries, including creating a new one
Interesting: my new iWeb published content and pictures to MobileMe no problem!
Background: my MacBook was not "born" with Leopard or iPhoto 08 - I put those on a year(?) ago (about the same time I upgraded my memory). And, my iPhoto 08 had been crashing or hanging when ever I tried to export (one of the reasons I wanted 09 so badly - to fix that problem). I thought that might have been due to my dotphoto file exported plugin - but I've deleted it and I've tried restoring past the time I installed it. iPhoto library has 6,700 pictures and 70 movies taking up 13.1 GB.
Any suggestions as to what I might be doing wrong? It feels like iPhoto 09 doesn't "talk" to the internet correctly.Patrick-
Thank you for the suggestion. I still encounter the same problem after running repair disk permissions. Here's what I get: Permissions differ on "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/iPhotoAccess.framework/Versions/A/Resources/P lugins/..."
the specific plugins vary (there are about 16) then it states ".../Contents/CodeResources", should be -rw-r--r--, they are lrw-r--r--.
It also states this for nine /CoreServices/Front Row.app/
There are also warnings; one is: SUID file "System/Library/Filesystems/AppleShare/afpLoad" has been modified and will not be repaired.
It ends by saying Permissions repair complete. I have no idea what to do with this information! -
i Photo (version 7.1.1) crashes on opening. Just Four days ago I did a clean install of the system software. I examined the disk with DiskWarrior 4 without change. I reinstalled the iPhoto, version 7.1.1 again without change. The console log app. has this to say:

My Mac is a G4 1.25 GHz DP MDD, 2 GB RAM running OS 10.4.11. The Crash Log reports the problem is: Reason: image not found. Thanks for any suggestions to clear the issue.
EricEric:
It looks like the iLifeMediaBroswer didn't get installed when you did the system install. You may have to do an Archive and Install (with the option to preserve the user and internet settings) in order to get that framework to install. Also don't forget to install the iLife Support 1.1 updater as it an essential part of the package. You can find it at the Apple Downloads site.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file. -
IPhoto crash on open after export
Hello -
iPhoto crashed this morning when I performed the following steps.
Attached Canon A570is camera this morning over USB with 4 photos on the SD card.
Used iPhoto to "Import All..."
Selected option to erase originals on camera.
Powered off camera, then disconnected the cable.
I left the folder selection on the "navigation" bar to the left as-is. I think the option is labeled as either "Last Import" or "Recent Import".
Rotated all 4 photos.
Selected all 4 photos and selected the "Export..." option to place them on the HDD.
After pressing the button on the Export dialog window, I pressed the Delete key on the keyboard to move all 4 photos to the iPhoto trash WHILE the export operation was in progress. My intent was to have iPhoto move the photos to trash after the export operation completed. I suspect this is event that triggered the error(s).
After the export operation finished, iPhoto crashed.
I see in the Finder that the 4 photos were exported to the HDD.
I am unable to launch iPhoto since this happened, each time I try it unexpectedly quits and I am presented with the option to send a crash report to Apple.
I have tried the following to resolve this:
Remove all plist files under ~/Library/ which are related to iPhoto.
Launched iPhoto while holding down the Cmd & Alt keys and selected ALL of the following to remedy things:
"Repair the iPhoto Library Database"
"Rebuild the photos' small thumbnails
"Rebuild all of the photos's thumbnails (this may take a while)"
"Recover orphaned photos in the iPhoto Library folder"
"Examine and repair Photo Library file permissions."
When iPhoto complete each of the above steps, I still get the "unexpectedly quit" message and the opportunity to send a crash report to Apple.
I am running the latest version of Lion (10.7.1). My iPhoto library was orignally created with Tiger. On that machine, I installed Lepoard then Snow Lepoard to upgrade, then bought a new machine just recently with Lion and used Migration Assistant to pull the library from the Snow Leopard machine to the new Lion machine.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks! My problem only started after my update 10.7.2, if anyone can help would be greatly appreciated..

Imported photos, deleted originals, then iphoto crashed and lost everything
I imported photos from my iphone, deleted the originals (i never do this, but figured, it's a new year so i should start cleaning up my phone!), and then iphoto crashed and now the photos i imported are nowhere to be found! help!
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. There's still a good chance that the photos are in the library but just not being recognized by iPhoto. Backup the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select last three options.
Fix #3
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
OT
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current.
NOTE: this is not the same as routinely backing up your entire iPhoto library folder to protect your photos. It only protects the loss of your organizational efforts that the database file contains.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete. -
Iphoto crashes after mountain lion upgrade
Hello,
I recently upgraded from Snow leopard to Mountain Lion via the apps store. Since then iphoto crashes upon opening. So far I have tried repairing permissions via disk utility, updating iphoto via software update and reinstalling ML from recovery disk. So far nothing has worked. iPhoto also doesnt work in other user areas on the same machine. This morning when I tried again I got a message onscreen for a few moments before it crashed asking me to update the library. How can I do this without opening iphoto (which I can't do). There is a suggestion on this forum about typing a command into terminal but this scares me and nobody has commented to say that it works.....
I would be really grateful if anybody can help me with this. There seem to be a lot of people with similar problems but most people seem to find their problems solved after reinstalling ML which hasn't worked for me.
ThanksHello again,
Please could someone help me, I am really getting nowhere. I've tried reinstalling and updating again and it still doesn't work. Here is the crash report:

IPhoto crashes when I edit with Photoshop!
Whenever I edit an iPhoto photo using Photoshop, iPhoto crashes when I try to import it back into iPhoto. This happens whether I export the photo, Photoshop it, and re-import it, or whether I use iPhoto Preferences to select Photoshop as my editor. I can import other photos into iPhoto, just not photos that have been edited with Photoshop. Help would be much appreciated!
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
My iPhoto crashed as I was trying to export a selected number of photos (to send to colleagues with Windows PC) and all content is missing. How do I restore/get all content back and in the same formet ie in their original events that I set up?
Hi Terence, here goes:-
iPhoto 09 version 8.1.2 (424)
Snow Leopard Mac OS X (latest update)
I had selected about 7 photos to export into 'pictures' so that I could send them by email to colleagues who don't have Apple. On returning to iPhoto all the content had disappeared and the photos I had selected did not export.
It happened on Thursday 21st Feb, nothing had been installed or deleted but I did update the latest software fairly recently (usual automated update etc). I am able to still use iPhoto but when I click the red button to close the application, it closes completely from my machine - the blue highlight button underneath the icon disappears and it does not remain in the background where I would usually have to click on 'iPhoto' in the top left hand corner.
No error messages
Attempted to restore by accessing Time Capsule - that's another matter/problem I will need to address separately (user error I reckon on this aspect!).
As far as I know I use iPhoto as it should be ie I have all my photos in Events (not albums)
Thanks -
Iphoto crashes when importing from SD card
I found similar discussions but no solution.
I am using snow leopard with Iphoto. I never had any problems but now I am not able to import pictures into the library. Iphoto crashes whenever I am trying to import from an SD card. I need to restart the computer to be able to use Iphoto again. Is there a limit of the library size? I read something about 250000 pictures but I am far away from this number. What might be the problem?Hi Terence,

Although a long shot try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion and Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

I can't launch my iphoto, keep getting error message (crash). Try to reopen but the problem still persist. This is happening to me right after i upgraded to snow leopard.
Please help me out here
Message was edited by: gizmo_ponyI just experienced the same problem here, iPhoto crashing at launch after upgrading my iMac to 10.6, and I traced it to a missing iLife framework:
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/iLifeSlideshow.framework
I managed to recover without re-installing iPhoto by transferring the same framework from another working machine using the Administrator accounts on both machines:
1. On the good machine navigate to the folder HD > System > Library > PrivateFrameworks in the Finder.
2. Right click on the missing framework (iLifeSlideshow.framework) and choose Compress from the context menu. This should put a ZIP archive on the desktop. Transfer it to the problem machine via network or flash drive.
3. On the problem machine expand the ZIP archive to recover the original framework then drag it into the HD > System > Library > PrivateFrameworks folder. You'll have to authenticate.
And that fixed it.
Both machines were updated to 10.6 but only the iMac had the problem. On both I did a clean install of 10.6 then used the installer's system migration option to restore my data from backup, but the iMac was restored from a (known current) Time Machine backup while the laptop was restored from a SuperDuper! full disk backup so maybe that explains the difference. -
IPhoto Crashes all of the time. Attached Error Log. Please help?
Attached is the error log. I've tried creating a new library and running disk utility. iPhoto crashes after a few minutes of use, especially when trying to edit photos. Any advice? The crashing is chronic and has occured for some time now (months).

Back up first, just in case, but it shouldn't effect your library.
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
