IPhoto crashes at random, always deletes all photos from latest import

Can anyone help? It can crash when doing anything - editing photos, looking through them, or when I've just finished an import. Whenever it does this, when I re-open iPhoto, the name of the last event I last imported is still there, but is always empty. I have to rebuild my library every time this happens, and it's getting pretty annoying. Thanks to anyone who has a clue what's going on!

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

If you deleted photos from the Camra Roll of the photos app they are not deleted immediately. Instead they are moved to the Recently Deleted album where they will remain for 30 days. This feature was added because so many people deleted photos then wanted then back.
To completely delete those photos quickly go to the Recently Deleted album and delete them from there.

To transfer your photos:
Transfer and erase the Camera Roll:
Connect the iPad to your computer and launch Image Capture, iPhoto, or Aperture.
Select your iPad in the Devices list and click "Import all".

Are these photos in your camera roll? If so, you can't delete them using iTunes, & if you've already imported them to your computer, but left them on your phone...you're not clear on that...I suspect whatever program you used to import them doesn't see them anymore...is that correct? If so, you'll have to either mark to delete one at a time, or use third-party software to delete them.

Becky you can navigate to the iPhoto's library which is likely in your Pictures folder in your user account. You can simply move that to the Trash. HOWEVER please please please move that folder to the EHD you now have and have iPhoto point to that drive. Apple explains how to do this in iPhoto '11: Move your iPhoto library to a new location
Once you have successfully moved the library you can then trash the old library and then empty the Trash. I suspect your performance issue may be due to a HD that is too full or it is also possible the HD could be failing too.

I have recently purchased an external hard drive for my macbook air in order to make more room. Therefore I have transferred all of my photographs from iPhoto to the external hard drive and now I would like to delete everything from the iPhoto application. However when I select 'delete all' it informs me that I will also be deleting all the pictures that I have uploaded to facebook, which I do not want to do... I could go through and delete them individually, but I have over 5,000 pictures and only share them sporadically. Please help!

To make room on your MacBook Air you could also simply have dragged the iPhoto Library to your external drive and used it from there. You just need to make sure, the external drive has the correct filesystem.

Well, I guess my heading says it all. I am trying to delete multiple (like A LOT) of photos from my camera roll on my iphone 5 without connecting to my computer. Delete the pictures in the "camera roll" using computer.
On Windows:
Open up the DCIM folder from "My computer", select all the pictures/videos (Ctrl + A) and hit delete.
You could have selected the option "erase after importing" while importing the pictures on to your HDD.

Hopefully someone can help with this problem! I suddenly cannot see all my pictures in iPhoto only pictures from my latest import. All other events have black thumbnails and the pictures are not displayed when opening the event.

What's happened is that your database has been damaged. Have you had a crash or force quit recently?

To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

Quit iPhoto. In a Finder window, find the file named "com.apple.iPhoto.plist" in your user's Library >Preferences folder. Drag it to the trash. Start iPhoto and try emptying the trash again.

i used to get this problem if i hadn't selected to "trust" the device but i can confirm that was done
a suggestion on the web was to use the option to "import photos" and then in the advanced options choose the option to delete the files after import. the import works, but the files don't get deleted so it seems like there is something related here.
