IPhoto crashes no thumbnail cache rebuild bad thumblnails

My iPhoto crashes when rebuiling thumbnail cashe, it also has many thumbnails with no image. If I try to select these images it also crashes. There may be other times it crashes. Anyone have an ideas on how to fix this.
I have run fix permisions and several other utilities. It has crashed about 13-15 times since Saturday night.

  • Photos missing after thumbnail cache rebuild

I upgraded to ilife 08' and rebuilt my thumbnail cache in iphoto after it prompted me to do so. my photos are still on my hard drive in the "originals" folder and I can see the titles and outlines of where the albums should be when navigating through iphoto but I can't look at the pictures. When I scroll through iphoto I can see the pictures for a split second and then they're gone. I tried re-importing my originals folder but it says it already exists. help please!!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
I can see the titles and outlines of where the albums should be when navigating through iphoto but I can't look at the pictures.
What happens if you double click where a thumbnail should be? Does the correct pic open? IF so, then you have a thumbnail problem. If not, then I'm afraid you have a corrupted database.
If it's the thumbnail problem, try rebuilding again. Hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
If it's a corrupted database Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file. If not, then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Upgraded to iPhoto 8, rebuilt thumbnail cache, lost all pre-iphoto8 pics

Arrrg! I recently upgraded to iLife 08 - iPhoto was working beautifully but kept asking me to rebuild the thumbnail cache, which I put off for a few days. Then, after downloading pictures from my camera to iPhoto8 for the first time, I decided to rebuild the thumbnail cache (from the prompt at start-up). I never really noticed anything happening (no window to say that the rebuilding of caches had begun) but when iPhoto opened up again, only the recent pics I had just downloaded showed up. PANIC.
I have a few thousand pics now missing.
I can't go into the iPhoto library (on an external harddrive) like I used to. As it is now more like an application icon that only opens the iPhoto program. It seems that I can no longer access any file like "originals".
Now, I have checked all the trash cans: nothing
I have opened iPhoto using option, and option apple: nothing
When I open disk utilities and check the external harddrive I can tell that the files are still there (judging from the amount of disk space used, and still available) I just access them at all.
What should I do? Please Help!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    Sounds like a corrupted database.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums back.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder.
    As to accessing files:
There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
To upload to MySpace or any site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser. Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves. If you're willing to risk database corruption, you can restore the older functionality simply by right clicking on the iPhoto Library and choosing 'Show Package Contents'. Then simply make an alias to the folders you require and put that alias on the desktop or where ever you want it. Be aware though, that this is a hack and not supported by Apple.

  • Iphoto updating the thumbnail cache

I recently installed ilife 06 and I had just moved all my photos over to my recently purchased power mac, and when I opened up iphoto it said it needed to update the thumbnail cache or something like that. Now when I open a photo even outside of iphoto all the images are much smaller in pixel size. Before I did the cache update the photos were very clear in full screen now they are blury. Also I used to have raw images before the update and now they aren't marked as raw anymore. Is it possible to change this or are the images going to be stuck small? Also i do have a power book g4 with the same photos on it and it never asked to update the cache.

I copied the files over the network from the iphoto folder on my old computer.
The correct way to do that is to copy the entire iPhoto Library Folder as a unit to the new machine, then let iPhoto update it.
Have a look inside your iPhoto Library Folder - in there you should have three main folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
Check inside the Originals folder. You'll find it contains Roll Folders and your pics should be inside them Try open some with Preview - are they full sized pics? What file sizes are reported in the Finder?

  • IPhoto '06 crashes when rebuilding thumbnail cache

title says it all. Every time I try to rebuild the cache when it prompts me to, it crashes about 90% thru. Any ideas?

    Hi luke,
    Close iPhoto.
Navigate to your iPhoto Library folder in the Finder and drag out the Data folder and the three thumbnail files to the desktop.
Hold down the Command and Option keys when launching iPhoto until you get the rebuild screen. Choose the thumbnail options and rebuild.
Hopefully it will work this time.

  • IPhoto 6 crashed after rebuilding thumbnail cache

I, too, have had trouble with iPhoto 6, but only when I finally clicked "ok" after the endless suggestions to rebuild my thumbnail cache. The result? A loss of all my thumbnails on my eMac. My elaborate structure of albums was there, but each one was empty. I gad to call Apple several times, as the solution seemed to work but didn't at first. I hunted everywhere, as 10,002 photos were seemingly lost, and eventually found the image files in the iPhoto trash. The Apple expert told me that my iPhoto library was probably corrupted (perhaps too simplistic an answer, or were all 10,002 photos somehow corrupted?) so the suggested solution was to rebuild the library after having made a copy of the old library just in case--knowing that the images were actually there in the iPhoto trash. Thank goodness I had just enough space on my hard drive to do this. This crisis occurred the very night before a vacation where I was planning to take a lot of nature photos, so when I returned 10 days later, my first task was to rebuild the library with a whole new album and folder structure. It took two days! Now I am getting the "rebuild your thumbnail cache" instruction again every time I open up iPhoto on my iBook that I use for work and my eMac, and I won't dare do it. Who has a thorough explanation of this problem and has any information on whether or not Apple has encountered this enough to address it? Thanks for weighing in on this.

    Christina:
Did you check the file sizes of those files you found in the Trash? If you still have them check their size to see if they are truly the full sized files or just the thumbnails?
Does your current running library have the albums, slideshows, keywords, etc. intact? If so I suggest you try letting iPhoto Library Manager rebuild your library. It will create a new library and a new database file and copy the full sized files from the old library. I believe it creates new thumbnails. That might get you away from that incessant "rebuild thumbnails" message. Here's how:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: It can take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos. One user reported that with a library of about 5,000 images it took about 12 hours so plan ahead.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • IPhoto: rebuilding thumbnail cache.

Further to my last problems with iPhoto 6 - most kindly and helpfully answered on this forum - I now find that every time I re-open iPhoto it has to rebuild the thumbnail cache - a time consuming task I never had with iPhoto 5. Is there a hidden button somewhere that tells the program to keep the thumbnail cache? And while on the subject, is there a reason that "Batch Change" won't accept any typing in the text panel? Wish I could be more enthusiastic about this program but after the faiied Adjust panel and now these I'm beginning to wish I'd waited for an Apple debug before investing my money in the upgrade. Any suggestions gratefully - and slavishly - pursued!

  • Rebuild thumbnail cache

    Hi all,
Let me assure you that before posting this question, I read through many of the posts on the same subject. But there were lots of different pieces of advice and I'm not sure which one to use. Also the last post was a few months ago and maybe some new advice has come up.
I'm getting the message to 'Rebuild thumbnail cache' a lot, even though nothing seems to be wrong with the way iPhoto is working. What's the best way to get rid of this message?
I've tried Option + Apple + Launch iPhoto, then selecting all boxes but the 'orphaned photos' one, then rebuilding. That has not stopped the message.
    Thanks and regards,
    Andrew

    Movie lady
Did you go to home/library/caches and delete the iPhoto Folder therein. Then launch iPhoto. It'll take a few moments to launch as it rebuilds the caches.
Do a get info on your HD icon. It'll tell you the capacity and the available space. The reason I ask is that an overfull HD can cause problems like this, but most likely it's just a malformed cache file.

  • HT2638 iPhoto crashes when I click on the "Rebuild" button????

When I launch iPhoto 9.2.3 (OSX 10.6.8), it comes up saying the photo library has become unreadable, and instructs me to restart the app whilst holding the command and option keys down. When I do this, it gives a panel where I can select to rebuild the photo library. I click on Rebuild, and it crashes immediately without a crash log or event in syslog.
Anyone know how to rebuild the photo library manually?
Where does the file reside on the system?

Try this:  make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
    3 - reboot.
4 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
If that doesn't help log into another user account on your Mac and see if iPhoto will work as it's suposed to there. If it does then the problem lies with your account.  If iPhoto crashes in the other account a reinstall of iPhoto is indicated.
To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and from the /var/db/receipts/  folder,
Then install iPhoto from the disk it came on originally and apply all appropriate updaters.

  • IPhoto Crashes during Upgrade at Thumbnails

I have searched this discussion group and found many suggestions to overcome my problem with iPhoto 5.0.4, but none are working.
I installed iLife '05 yesterday. My entire purpose in purchasing this software was to organize my extensive photo library. When going through the upgrade process, iPhoto crashes while updating Thumbnails.
    I have tried this suggestion:
Setting Permissions for iPhoto Library Folder
1 - Select the iPhoto Library folder and type Command-I.
2 - When the Info window comes up go to the Ownership and Permissions section and make sure You have Read & Write permission and that the Owner and Group have Read & Write also. Others - Read Only.
3 - Then click on the "Apply to enclosed items..." button.
See it it will work now. If not, launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the two options regarding thumbnails. This may be the same as what iPhoto was doing on its own but give it a try. if that fails then move the three thumbnail files, Thumb32.data, Thumb64.data and ThumbJPG.data to the Trash and launch iPhoto. They may be damaged and rebuilding this way may get you thru the process.
I have tried the suggestions on these pages:
    http://homepage.mac.com/loridilo/Personal21.html
    http://homepage.mac.com/loridilo/Personal22.html
NOTHING works. I know my photos are not lost and that they are on my hard drive. However, if I have to recreate the hundreds of folders I'm gonna go postal.

    Kirk:
Do you have a backup copy of your V4 iPhoto Library folder? After installing iLife 05 did you repair disk permissions with Disk Utility?
Here's an easy off the wall fix that worked for another user, it just might work for you.
1 - move your iPhoto Library folder to the desktop.
2 - launch iPhoto and when asked create a new library.
3 - quit iPhoto and move the new library folder to the trash and move the original one back to the Pictures folder.
    4 - launch iPhoto.
Don't ask me why but it worked for another user.
If that doesn't work you can try to rebuild the library (make a temporary backup copy of the library folder first - select it and type Command-D. Then launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options.
If that doesn't work there's this option:
1 - move the backup library folder to the desktop and trash the original that didn't rebuild properly.
2 - launch iPhoto and create a new library.
3 - using the File->Add to Library select the duplicate library folder and click the Import button.
This will import the full sized image files that are inside that iPhoto Library folder. Most of the rolls will be intact but with different titles and dates (the current import date). There will be additional rolls for the various original files of those you've edited earlier. You will lose albums, keywords and comments. But that should get you an up and running library.
Hope this has been of some help. Good luck.

  • What to do if "rebuild thumbnail caches" is stuck?

How long should it take to "rebuild thumbnail caches?" It has been over 24 hours and after I closed and reopened iPhoto it tried again and still nothing. The wheel just spins. What can I do to bypass this or make it work correctly?

    What version of iPhoto?
Backup your iPhoto library, depress the opeion and command keys, launch iPhoto and rebuild your database

  • IPhoto Thumbnails missing, rebuild does not work

All the Thumbnails in iPhoto 8.1 are grey. I tried to rebuild them several times  by pressing alt + cmd during the start.
Also tried the other options, nothing helped.
When iPhoto starts, it always is rebuilding the thumbnail cache.
I even tried to reinstall the software, but I couldn't figure out how to import all of them without having duplicates from the originals and modified folder. So at the end I restored the iPhoto Library with time machine.
    Any solutions?

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto crashed during file transfer. Cannot recover photos by rebuilding the library and there is library size discrepancies.

    Hi,
I am using an iPhone 4S and running iPhoto '09 version 8.1.2 (204) on OS X (version 10.9.2).
I was transferring photos from my iPhone to iPhotos with the option of deleting the originals on the phone after transfer. IPhoto crashed at some point and I had to "Force quit" the application.
Now, 3/4 th of all my pics is deleted on my iPhone and they are not in iPhoto either! I tried repairing and rebuilding the library as suggested elsewhere on this forum but nothing has worked.
The library size is currently 11.6 GB but the rebuilt library is 5.6 GB.  I think the library was around 5 GB as well before transfer. I also tried using the "iPhoto library  manager" to rebuild the library. There is no difference between the pictures in the rebuilt library and the default library, but again the new, rebuilt one is 11.6 GB and the library it uses for rebuilding 5.6 GB! So, I think the pictures are there somewhere but I am not recovering it.
Any suggestions as to how to recover deleted photos from my iPhone or to restore the iPhoto library would be muc appreciated.
    Many thanks,
P.S. I do not have a recent iTunes or iCloud backup.

If you sync photos between the Mac and other devices via iTunes there will be an cache folder created that will grow over time.  That's what the new library doesn't include and, in part, is the reason for the size discrepance.
iPhoto 8.1.2 is only marginally compatilbe with Mavericks and, as Linc suggested, should be upgraded to iPhoto 9.5.1 to be completely compatible.

  • Why frequent prompts to rebuild thumbnail caches?

Why does iPhoto 6 continually prompt me to rebuild my thumbnail caches? It takes me less than one minute to do it, but I can't understand why it is necessary to do this so often.
    Bob

    Bob
When you launch iPhoto the app runs various checks on itself to assess the database and so on.
He fact that you are continually being prompted to do this rebuild is of some concern. It suggests that the app is finding a glitch on the DB and is not able to repair it.
    First off, back up.
IF you want to: Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • PSE8 won't rebuild faulty thumbnail cache - any ideas?

I had a LOT of trouble moving my catalog of about 16000jpeg files from a previous pc (PSE6) to a new Windows 7, 64 bit pc.  PSE6 or 7 wouldn't load on the new one so I purchased PSE8.  After a MONTH of uninstall/reinstall etc I finally got the catlaog to work (by converting then moving the thumbnail cache file from the old pc to the new.- It wouldn't work by deleting the cache on the new pc and hopng for a rebuild). It all worked well for a week or 2 and I deleted quite a few files and tags and was just adding some new photos and the cache became corrupted again.  I tried the" repair catalog" instruction and it tried to reform the cache but this jammed Organiser completely and it won't work at all now - opens but is frozen (eg won't even minimise).  I'd left it overnight to recreate the thumbnails so it isn't that....I've got a request for Adobe to answer the problem - (1st June) but haven't heard anything yet.  Any suggestions? Is anyone else using this volume of jpegs on a 64 bit pc with Windows 7...?  Adobe give no official maximum catalog size....but this isn't fitfor my purposes....I'm probably going to switch to Picasa for my new files but need to get access to my old files back via Organiser,,:-(

    Dear John,
As this is rather complicated and I did take action following my post on the forum, I thought it best to email and send the attachment - which is your suggestions and my comments..the rather sad results!
I am now back to the generic Adobe solutions and their customer services. (I think, unless you spot something??)
As Organiser isn't jammed with the tiny test catalog it seems it is purely a problem with the main catalog - and an inability to rebuild thumbnails - it starts the rebuild as soon as Organiser is opened (judging from the size and times of the thumb.5 cache file) then jams straightaway - the last one was 338KB today - just before midnight - a little while ago...  It DID rebuild the tiny test catalog after I deleted that thumbnail cache file as a test.
Adobe's customer service solution was to split the main catalog as discussed before as they said it was too big...(I know it SHOULDN'T be! - and indeed it did work at full size for a week...)
    1.  To split??  Although your psedb tool didn't find last time any errors it does appear to be a problem linked to this (size of/ number of tags? Etc?) catalog...if I am to access the info at all it looks as if I MAY need to split it...as you recommend not doing that if at all possible I thought I'd just send you the attached update to see if you do think it is now warranted...(assuming I'd be able to split it anyway) with Organiser being jammed...
    2.  Try a restore??  Adobe's troubleshooting suggestion includes to restore from a back up if repair and optimise don't work - although my back up is only a week old (so not TOO bad) this would still require thumbnail creation wouldn't it? (and I recall it didn't work last time...) - and it would require overwriting my image files again I think?  As they are jpegs I'm concerned I'll lose quality each time...is that right?
    3.  Rebuild?? I note your comment re the problems with Organiser - and although I've loved it and found it so fast and useful, I will be looking elsewhere for future file organisation - I can't stand the uncertainty of PSE8!  However I do so need to access the info in my main catalog...is it time to give up on it though, if an alternative or splitting isn't an answer?  I've got to be realistic.  Adobe's point 7 in troubleshooting catalog errors is in fact to rebuild.  arrgghh!
I'd be interested in your views on these points - or alternatives.  I may be "in denial" over losing the catalog but hope is fading fast...
Looking forward to hearing from you if you are able to spare the time,
    Many thanks
    Ruth
