Iphoto crashes, really fast error message...

hi,
iPhoto 09 on my school's MacBook crashes after I plug my iTouch into the computer to charge. The iTouch is 'assigned' to the MBP at home, but I thought I 'gave permission' for the iTouch to hook up to the MacBook as well.
After each crash, I have to go delete the plst thing in the user library, and it works fine--until I hook up the iTouch again. However, during it's 'working fine' stage, when I go to shut the iPhoto app down, there's a lightening-fast error message that drops down for a fraction of a second then disappears. The only word I've been able to read was 'critical". I can't read as fast as it appears and re-appears. I've attempted to grab a screen shot, but I'm not that fast.
Any suggestions on what the message might say, or how to keep from having to delete the plist each time?
Thanks
Lisa

That message is simply telling you that Photo is "saving critical data" - i.e. the database.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

There is a framework missing in your System library. You need to reinstall MacOS X to restore the dynamic library:

How are you launching iPhoto? From your Dock? The Dock icon may still be linked to an older iPhoto version. Just to be sure, you are opening really iPhoto 9.6, launch iPhoto by double-clicking the iPhoto icon in your applications folder. Your crash log  with the the "Library not found" error message should show the version number of iPhoto. Which version is it showing?

  • EncoreDVD CS3 crashes without an error message - perhaps not enough RAM?

    Hi,
my Encore DVD CS3 crashes without any error message!
I made a DVD with a main menu and two submenus, one submenu for the chapters of my movie and the other submenu for a bonus part of my DVD. I'd linked all content to the buttons, except the videos of the bonus-submenu. When I tried to link them (therefore I used the flowchart), Encore just crashed - without sending any error message!
I've only 1GB RAM in my iMac - perhaps it's simply not enough? Could this be the reason for the crash?
    Greetings, Micha

Could be anything, not necessarily a memory issue, even though 1 Gig really isn't much by today's standards. It's imaginable that there is a problem with latching on to the chapter points and EN doesn't generate the list correctly. Could also be drawing issues for the pickwhip gizmo stuff... Hard to tell without sitting in front of the machine.

  • When I open iphoto I get an error message that says Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable,

when I open iphoto I get an error message that says Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable, I have tried restarting computer and opening iphoto whilst holding down option and command key, but then I get the following message-Your photo library is damaged or unreadable and cannot be opened. Please restore from a backup.  Please can anyone help?

Make a back up now. If you have any vaule in Your photos always have a back up.
    Most Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
    Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate
In Library Manager the Rebuild command is under the File menu. There's also an excellent Help available.

When trying to open iphoto I get the error message "You can't open the application iPhoto because it may be damaged or incomplete." How do I fix this and get my photo's back?

    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.

Hhow much goal and free hard disk space is available? Sounds like you need to move some things off of that hard drive.

  • Opening iphoto I get an error message that says "you can't open your current photo library using this version of iphoto.  You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iphoto.  Please quit and use the latest version of iphoto.

Opening iphoto I get an error message that says "you can't open your current photo library using this version of iphoto.  You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iphoto.  Please quit and use the latest version of iphoto."  I wouldn't have a clue as to how to change to a new version of iphoto even if I wanted to.

If you don't have a backup you can resort to give this a try:
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

When I try to open iPhoto, I get an error message that says it can't open the application because it may be damaged or incomplete.

Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
    Happy New Year

I have scanned photos using an Epson V500 scanner set to scan using jpeg format at the highest quality (least compression) setting.  When I try to import the scanned jpegs into iPhoto, I get an error message from iPhoto saying "The file is an unrecognized format."  But if I reduce the quality setting on the Epson scanner to just slightly below highest quality, the images import into iPhoto just fine.  Why won't iPhoto accept jpegs scanned at the highest quality setting?  Wondering?

What scanner format settings dis you use?  Are these color photos? If they are B/W did you scan as grayscale images?  That could be the problem.
Are you able to open them with Preview?  If so do a Save As, select full quality and save as a jpeg with a new file name.  See if that file will import and work as intended.
