IPhoto crashes the system

I have two iPhoto librariries
1st one is quite heavy( around 13 gb)
Whenever I open this library(13gb) the os crashes
The only thing which works as is
1.open another desktop
2.open activity monitor
3.force quit the iPhoto
I am very upset for my photos
This problem is since I upgraded to mt lion and latest iPhoto
Currently I am using MacBook Pro 13" dual i5,os x mt lion,iPhoto 11
Kindly help
I'll be highly thankful to you

13 gigs is not a lot for an iPhoto Library.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Iphoto crashing the system on Mac OSX 10.8.5

    Hello there,
since I updated my MacBook Pro from 10.6.8 to  OSX 10.8.5, iPhoto brings down my whole system. Starting iPhoto causes the MacBook to crash. Someimes, I can start iPhoto and the crash will occur after a few minutes...very irregular.
Maybe someone can give me a hint...
    Thanks in advance,
    philoTon

    Hi Old Toad,
thanks again for the quick reply!
    Alright, I did the following:
    - I used the user account "guest" and logged into it. Then I opend iPhoto there and worked with it for a while: No problems (although I did´nt work with it for hours, but not one crash!)
That means obviously that the problem is based in my "admin" account somwhere and not a system problem...
    - I downloaded Etrecheck and I did let it run over my system. I posted the result down below...
    - I do not know how to reinstall iPhoto (and only iPhoto) Is there a function "reinstall" or are there downloadable versions? Thanks in advance for clearing that up for me...
    - I don´t think I have thrid party RAM installed: Two times 4GB in the unibody MacBook Pro...
And of course thank you for your continuing help on this matter!
    All the best
    piloTon

  • Mkfs.ntfs crashes the system

    Hi all,
Here I am again with a weird kernel & swap bugs! But I'm pretty sure the kernel itself is okay, so newbie corner it is.
Here the problem: Doing this (/dev/sdb is a 16 GB USB key I want to format)
    % sudo mkfs.ntfs /dev/sdb1
Cluster size has been automatically set to 4096 bytes.
    Initializing device with zeroes: 2%^C^C^C^C^C^C^C^C^C^C^C^C^C^C^C^C
Crashes my system in 30 seconds. As soon as I type the command, the computer gets extremely laggy, cursor barely reacts to mouse movement, can't ^C the command, few seconds later X is completely locked up and I switch to another terminal. Shortly after logging in, I lost acces to the terminal as well (too laggy), so I just unplugged the USB key, very bad idea from me:

I had to SysRq+RE to recover from this one. Then I tried it again, but I was able to recover the system this time, and I got this:

I disabled swap and now I'm able to mkfs, ntfs, but it takes the whole available RAM (-/+ buffers is 1963MB). I'm typing this and this is the only tab I can open, if I dare try to open anything else system goes unstable (random app freezes like xfce4-panel, comes back if I close something else).
TL;DR: Question: Why does mkfs.ntfs crashes the system? How can I prevent it from doing that?

I don't know if this helps, here's more dmesg:

It does seem to use usb-storage as expected. I will try to find my other drive I lost somewhere on my desk and see if it does the same, I don't remember having my other drive going crazy like that.
It also seems like dd works fine on it (probably flushes the buffer on every write), I'll keep testing on my side...

  • Why does firefox 7 crashes the system if Quadro NVS 135M graphics driver is installed?

Why does firefox 7 crashes the system with a Quadro NVS 135M graphics cards installed?
It happens immediately after opening Firefox on a two screen system. You get a message saying the Graphics Driver stopped responding, but that it managed to recover, but after a while the system freezes completely. You can't even CTRL+ALT+DEL.

I get this too on with my nVidia GTX460 card. In my case the screen goes black. It happens once every few days, and for a while I could not figure out why. I was forcing a shutdown to get the screen back.
But I put the computer to sleep and woke it up, since that restarts the video, and this let me see what was wrong. The only error message is it reports that Firefox hung. There is nothing else in the Event logs.
I'm running Windows 7 with all the updates from Windows Update, and my video driver is 285.62, but his also happened with the 260.26 driver.
I imagine this is happening a lot, but people aren't able to isolate the cause.
I'm looking for a fix, not a bypass.

  • Previously well behaved printer now crashes the system.

I have a  CC4400.  Until today it has been working fine.  Today when I switched the printer on it crashed my system.  I get a blue screen with a lot of technical data which tells me to restart my computer if this is the first time it has happened.  Now I am at the 10th or 11th time it has happened.  I uninstalled all software and reinstalled - fine until I turn the printer on, then it crashes again.  When I plug the printer into my spare computer directly there is no problem but it is not recognised through the network.  Any ideas?  I'm about ready to throw the printer out the window!!

    Hi,
Unlike a PC, Mac SO X uses Apple's Bonjour to communicate with the device.
In order the device will operate propertly on Mac your router have to support DNS Multicast which is the network protocol used by Bonjour, it can only be named as mDNS, Bonjour or IGMP Snooping.
Some routers may not support Multicast or may have the protocol disabled by the router defautl configuration.
I would suggest contadcting the router service provider and ensuring the router support those protocols and have the latest firmware installed.
    Hope that helps,
    Shlomi

  • Second user account crashes the system?

I'm really stumped; after enduring the migration assistant screw up and crash the newly installed Snow Leopard system on my macbook pro...THREE TIMES and finally ferrying all the documents and apps manually to my primary (home) account, I created a second user account to use for my office work. The home account seems to work fine, but when I logout and try to access the new, empty office account, it's like opening the door and stepping into blank space; all I get is the pink and blue astral plane and the spinning beachball of death!! The only solution is to press the on off button and reboot.
What do I do? This seems to be a different problem from the guest account accidentally wiping the hard drive clean? HEEELLLP!! I can't work until I can get my computer up!

Thanks VK and KT for the replies. I''ve done it both ways: I've deleted the second account and recreated it with a new name...still doesn't work. Changed the 2nd account from a Admin account to Standard, and that didn't work. AND I've tried logging out of one and directly into the other, and when that didn't work (because the system crashed) I started up from scratch and went directly to the second user account... and the same thing happened. LOL at least it's consistent <rueful grin>

Okay, your edit stuff is irrelevant to this particular problem.  You should focus on one thing at a time.
So I am still not entirely sure if you tried masking modemmanager.service before… if so, then this still caused the problem?  If not, then try that.
Modemmanager is also activated via dbus.  So there is a file /etc/dbus/system.d/org.freedesktop.ModemManager1.conf that I think activates the service when NetworkManager is started.  You might be able to stop the modemmanager from being started by eliminating this file.  But unfortunately, this file is not in the backup array of the package, so when the package gets updated, this file will reappear.
Honestly, I think you should learn how to build your own package.  Using the Arch Build System is really no different than using the AUR.  That is, if you aren't using some crap like yaourt.  Using an AUR helper is fine, so long as you know what that entails and how to do things manually.  In the event that you run into problems when using an AUR helper, it is always good to know how to manually build the packages so that you can debug the situation.
Building a custom networkmanager package to not include the modemmanager support is as simple as removing a one line from the ./configure line and one word/package from the depends array.  It is not an incredibly large package, so it builds in a minute or so on my machine.
I think the other sane alternative would be to simply try another network management application.  Wicd I think would be a good alternative, as it also provides a nice taskbar icon in the wicd-gtk package.  Though I use network manager from time to time, I started with wicd.  It is much easier to use, and doesn't try to throw every feature possible into the mix.

  • IPhoto crashes my system when uploading photos to Facebook any help?

I can upload a few photos (getting errors) they still post when you check facebook, but after a few photos the entire system crashes and restarts, happend 3x now and i give up... posted in another forum (got kicked out to iPhoto boad lol) and so here I am again, anyone know whats up with this? im on Lion w/ all iPhoto updates installed.... i posted the crash report on my other post.. but was told dont post it until asked... so if you need it let me know...or if you know what might be causing it?

I found this fix posted by Paul Griffin:
    Paul J Griffin
Re: My iPhoto will not longer let me hit the Facebook icon and immediately post to Facebook.  Now it says, "Do you want to set up iPhoto to publish to Facebook?"  which you still can't do.  What gives?
Dec 30, 2012 7:26 PM (in response to laurafromhamilton)
Just solved it here after an hour+ of experimenting.
    Try this:
    • When you get prompted "Do you want to set up iPhoto of post to Facebook?" confirm and it will bring up your regular Facebook home page in asmall viewer window.
    • Go up to the upper right corner of the Facebook page and log out, then hit the "Close" button at the bottom of the small viewer window.
    • You'll probably get the same "Do you want to set up iPhoto to publish to Facebook?" prompt again. This time hit Cancel
    • Now try to share your pictures to Facebook again.  You'll get the "Do you want to set up iPhoto to publish to Facebook?" message again. Do it and this time hopefully you should get a prompt to login to your Facebook account. Enter your Facebook name and password. This should reset your connection.
    • If successful you should get a prompt from Facebook that you can close the page. Close it and fingers crossed, all should work again. That's what worked for me.
See if it will work for you.

  • Ddi_dma_addr_bind_handle crashes the system

    Hi all,
Mandar here again. I am developing a driver for a NIC under Solaris 7 Ultra SPARC. I am in the process of getting 32 bit virtual address for my network device. I am doing this by using dma calls. I could allocate dma handle using ddi_dma_alloc_handle. After this i allocated a dma object of size 8k using ddi_dma_mem_alloc. This call also succeeded. Then I tried to bind this dma object to a cookie, which will ultimately get me the required 32 bit address, using ddi_dma_addr_bind_handle.
This call is resulting into a system crash. The crash doesnt give me any hint as of what is the cause behind it. I checked all the input parameters n times but m could not find any problem with them. At the time of crash i can see error message disappearing fast, something like
devfsadm error: misalignment. Dont know what this meant.
I was getting a similar error when my dma_attr structure was a member of a device specific structure and i had found that this structure being a member of the device specific structure was not aligned on 8 byte boundary. When i took it out of the structure it got proper alignment 8 bytes and worked fine. I made sure that none of the parameters being passed to addr_bind_handle are a member of any structure so that there wont be any problem of address misalignment.
Not able to understand what the problem is!!
Any inputs to my problem are welcome!
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi
Perhaps, you are facing the SUn Bug ID 4451967 which is fixed in Solaris 8 with the latest kernel jumbo patch 108528-14. This patch is freely available for download from http://sunsolve.sun.com. Install the same and see if it resolves the issue.

  • The latest OS update now causes my external keyboard to crash the system?

I use my late 2008 MacBook Pro 15" as a desktop.  I have it on a stand and use a Magic Trackpad and was using an iHome external keyboard with a built in iPod dock.  I downloaded the latest software update for 10.6.8 this morning and when i restarted my computer a bunch of code displayed on the screen and a window saying "You have to restart your computer" in 4 different languages appeared.  I restarted the computer 3 times and the same thing occured.  It wasn't until a disconnected all the peripherals and restarted that the OS would reload and then realized that it was the iHome keyboard that was causing the OS to crash.
    Any suggestions?
