IPhoto crashes trying to access library on NAS

Question

Hiya...  I am on a 1st gen MBP retina with 8gb of ram, running mavericks and iPhoto 9.5.1 (902.17).  I have copied some of my previous iPhoto libraries onto a Synology NAS and when I try to connect to the library, iPhoto goes through to the process of reading and upgrading the library (last version was 2007 I think) and then crashes.  I have upgraded to the latest Java version.
I notice others having issues and one thread suggested checking the user logs and messages in the console to provide some more detail behind what is happening. 
Causing me serious frustration… any assistance greatly appreciated

iPhoto goes through to the process of reading and upgrading the library (last version was 2007 I think) and then crashes.
It would be good to know the version of iPhoto that created the older libraries, If your older libraries have been created by iPhoto version 7.1.2 or earlier, you'll need to run iPhoto library upgraded first.  (see:  iPhoto '11: About the Library Upgrader)
