IPhoto crashes when burning

Hi,
This topic as been talked about, but except for not having enough hard drive space for the disk image, no good solutions.
If I try to burn a DVD with my iMac G5 to back up my iPhoto library, iPhoto crashes. I say burn, a small window pops up, I click burn and iPhoto crashes.
iPhoto 5.04
I have enough hard drive space 179GB free on the 250GB drive!
iPhoto only thing running with 2 GB of memory. and ~1500 photos.
I can export the photos to a file and then burn that through the finder.
But, if I try to burn the iPhoto library with finder, it gives me a -43 error and won't burn.
I can burn through iDVD and through the finder other things, so it is not the MATSHITA DVD-R drive.
Trashed the iPhoto preference file, but it did not help.
So I used my PowerBook G4 laptop. Both computers on a LAN. (File sharing on). Moved my Powerbook iPhoto library ( so iPhoto could not find it), started iPhoto on the Powerbook, and when it asked for the library, I pointed to the iMac G5 library! I then went to burn a DVD and NO PROBLEM!!!
It burned just fine. I had thought it might be a problem with the library as it wouldn't burn through the finder but...
So I trashed the iPhoto application on the G5 and copied it over from the Powerbook, but it still crashed when trying to burn a DVD.
This is a bit long winded, but a lot of info (and clues?).
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hi,
This is how I resolved the problem:
Since I was able to back up my iPhoto library thru my laptop (see my original posting. Connected to iMac thru LAN),
I trashed the whole iPhoto library and used the back up DVD to make a new one. I could then burn a copy thru the iMac.
Something was corrupted in the library. I have no idea why i could back up thru the Powerbook (LAN). That makes no obvious sense! If the library is corrupted it is corrupted! But I could and it worked! The backed up library was "fixed".
One other option (if you cannot make a backup like I did) is to export the library(I was still able to do this), trash the library, then recreate it by "adding to library". If you made notes, rotated photos, etc, you might loose that info, but I haven't studied that so I don't really know.
Let me know if you fix the problem.
Jeff

  • Iphoto crashes when I try to print - just moved moved iPhoto to my new iMac

I just bought a new iMac and iPhoto crashes when I try to print a picture.  I did port all my programs from my old iMac.

Before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.

  • IPhoto crashes when I name specific faces

iPhoto crashes when I attempt to name specific faces. It will always, for example, crash as soon as I try to enter the name of my son. However, for other people it will quite happily allow me to name the face.
I've set up a new library and a new user, but the behaviour was not replicated with either.
I've tried repairing and rebuilding the library using iPhoto, but this did not fix the problem.
I have tried rebuilding using iPhoto Library Manager, which I've seen many people suggest on here. While this fixed the problem (in that iPhoto didn't crash) the faces were no longer in the right location and it appears as if the face matching was to the wrong photo. Even trying to rescan for faces didn't correct it.
Are there any other potential solutions?

  • IPhoto crashes when I edit with Photoshop!

Whenever I edit an iPhoto photo using Photoshop, iPhoto crashes when I try to import it back into iPhoto. This happens whether I export the photo, Photoshop it, and re-import it, or whether I use iPhoto Preferences to select Photoshop as my editor. I can import other photos into iPhoto, just not photos that have been edited with Photoshop. Help would be much appreciated!

Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • IPhoto crashes when I try to Export

I had a message pop up yesterday that wanted to update iPhoto. After the update iPhoto crashed when ever I tried to export a photo. I even tried to restart and it still crashed. What do I do next?

Trash the HP Plug in from /Library/Application Support/iPhoto
There are two libraries where this plugin might be
    HD/ Library/Application Support/iPhoto
    and
    HD/Users/Your Name / Library/Application Support/iPhoto
(On 10.7 or later: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
as well as within the Application package
    /Applications/iPhoto.app/Contents/

  • Iphoto crashing when trying to print

when I select a photo, and go to page setup, the paper size just says 'item1' rather than the usual selection. if I try to change anything and click ok, iphoto crashes.
when I go to print, it hangs.
It seems that the app has lost something to do with the printer settings, but my printer works fine in other apps such as pages, where all the page setup details are in order.
    any idea what to do?
    thanks
    Gwyn

    Gwyn:
    Try the following:
1 - run Disk Utility and repair disk permissons.
2 - delete the print driver for you printer and then reinstall it with Printer Setup Utility.
3 - download and run the 10.4.7 COMBO updater followed by a repair of disk permissions again.
    Do you Twango?

  • IPhoto crashes when managing accounts

I am using iPhoto 11, 9.2.1. When I try to send a picture, I get the notice that my mail password is not correct. So I then go to iPhoto preferences - accounts and iPhoto crashes as soon as I load the Accounts page. I need to change the accounts from the mobileme account to the iCloud account, I think that is what I need to do to resolve the password error, but I can't manage the accounts because iPhoto crashes when I try to load the accounts page. The Update functionality says there are no updates available for my system. Any ideas?

  • IPhoto crashes when NAS is connected

I have a quite new MacBook Pro with OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2.
I experienced some problems with iPhoto since I work with a NAS (Synology 112j with one HDD/Western Digital).
Every time the NAS is connected to the network and the WiFi is on, iPhoto crashes when trying to start a slide show or build a new slide show. When the NAS is shutdown or I cut the WiFi, iPhoto works without any problems.
The iPhoto library is NOT exported to the NAS, it's still on my MacBook-HDD. The library is managed!
I tried to build up new libraries several times, but the problems occurs again and again.
I had a discussion in the iPhoto section of the community, but we couldn't get the problem fixed.
Now I try it here in the OS forum.
Maybe somebody experienced the same problem and got it fixed.
    I would appreciate any help.

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -Rh $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Step 1 should give you usable permissions in your home folder. This step will restore special attributes set by OS X on some user folders to protect them from unintended deletion or renaming. You can skip this step if you don't consider that protection to be necessary, and if everything is working as expected after step 1.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • IPhoto crashes when I write name on people's faces. Can I solve this problem?

From 2-3 weeks my iPhoto crashes when I select Faces and I add the name of people which is in the photo... can I make something ?
Those problems starts when iPhoto rebuild my library because it was damaged...

Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists.  If it does make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a viable backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
If the problem didn't repeat in the new library then your current library is damaged. In that case make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a viable backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Iphoto crashes when I try to edit existing (old) slideshow.

iphoto crashes when I try to edit existing (old) slideshow. If I create a new one I can edit them ok, it seems to be older slideshows I have the problem with. I am happy to delete slideshow but even if i try to right click I just get whirly wheel of death then need to force quit. Am running Maverick and latest version of iphoto software...

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if iTunes crashed, you would enter "iTunes" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Iphoto crashes when i export

Iphoto crashes when I export - help

Well don't throw it if you want the pictures of your child. Of course, you have a back up, right? I mean you wouldn't have something as precious as these photos that you "can NOT lose" without having a back up. That would be just stupid, right?
    And you're not stupid, right?
For the benefit of folks out there who may not have a back up: you don't need to launch iPhoto at all to make one.
    Most Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
    Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate
Anyway, the least of your problems right now is iPhoto. You have a much more serious issue either with Hardware or your OS. I'd post on the forum for your iMac for help with that.

iPhoto crashes when I try to enter a name in Faces

OK, I'm out of ideas. Something changed in your set up and just trying to find out what it was. Maybe someone in the iPhoto forum can help. https://discussions.apple.com/community/ilife/iphoto?view=discussions

  • IPhoto crashes when loading

iPhoto crashes when loading.  I am on 9.1.2 & I think this may have started after the update was applied on the 27/4 and the error message does not mean much to me

That's a different crash. When you re-installed, did you delete the receipts first?
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.
