IPhoto crashes when opening partially completed book

Using iPhoto 5.0.4 with Tiger 10.4.3 OS on a 1 GHz PowerPC G4 laptop with 768 MB of memory.
I created a book in iPhoto using the Yearbook Theme. I have 266 pictures either in the book or waiting to be placed. At least 230 pictures are on pages. There are 38 pages in use. At this point when I open the book, it opens to the pages selection and I can move off the current page by one or two pages before iPhoto freezes up and then quits. I am unable to view pictures at all. Fixes I have tried are repairing permissions, dpi settings, and cleaning caches from this discussion board.
Any additional help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
PB G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   768 MB Ram

I tried Lori's suggesting about opening each photo in iPhoto. I was able to get through 6 - 10 photos before the program crashed again. After trying to open and view each photo separately and crashing numerous times, I decided to try to make the book on a different machine.
I transfered the iPhoto library to my iMac G5. I was able to work on the project for about a half hour before the crashing began on that computer.
I removed all photos from my iPhoto Library (over 6000) and just imported those I needed for the book. Previously, I had used the Yearbook theme. This time I tried the Picturebook theme. I was working with 290 photos. I filled the standard 20 pages then started adding pages to the book. (My book needs to be 40 pages). At this point I again started to crash in iPhoto.
My images are standard images from digital cameras and scanned images. Scanned images are either 150 dpi or 2400 dpi. Is the size of my larger scanned images the issue? Is there a size limitation on the images in the book? Since I have used two different computers and have gotten the same problem, the common factor seems to be the photos themselves. All of the images I have set aside for the book will open in iPhoto, so I don't believe I have a corrupt photo.
Any other ideas or thoughts you have for me?
Thanks again for any help you can give.

  • IPhoto crashes when opening library over AirPort

I'm having major problems with my iPhoto library when opening iPhoto. If the external hard drive on which the library is stored is connected to my AirPort Extreme iPhoto says "loading photos" and then crashes. However, if I plug the external hard drive directly into the USB port on my MacBook it opens fine with no problems whatsoever.
Is anyone able to help me? Should I also post this in the AirPort Extreme area?
    Many thanks...

    Kempard:
I've had no problem opening libraries wirelessly withe AE when the drive was connected to another Mac connected to the AE. But many users have experienced just what you've experienced when the drive was connected directly to the AE. How is the drive formatted? iPhoto likes OS X Extended best.
Do check the AE forum as a different setup g instead of n or whatever, might word. Opening photos wirelessly can be very slow depending on the size of the file, etc. It's not an ideal setup.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • IPhoto crashes when opening, iPhoto crashes when opening

For a couple of weeks now, iPhoto crashes every time I open it. I have repaired disk permissions.
    What else can I do?

Hold the option command keys when launching iPhoto and repair permissions as your first step,  before moving on to rebuild.
If all else fails with the built in Photo Library First Aid  then download:
    http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/
always good to have a full back-up.

  • IPhoto crashes when opening application

I'm trying to upload photos from my camera and update my photo albums, but iPhoto keeps crashing when I try to open the application. I've deleted com.apple.iPhoto.plist from my Preferences folder and I haven't done anything with GarageBand recently or ever, except maybe updated in Software Update. I'm attaching my crash log/problem report in the hopes someone will understand it. Thanks for any suggestions.

Is this all being done over a wireless network connection between your Mac and the Airport base station?
If so - my recommendation is that you don't do it. If your iPhoto collection is anything like mine, the amount of data is massive. Trying to transfer all that data over a wireless network connection is going to take a fairly long time. You can use the hard drive connected to the Airport base station for backups - but keep your active working files (like your iPhoto collection) on your Mac's internal hard drive or a hard drive plugged directly into your Mac. Or if you really must connect the drive to the Base Station, run an ethernet cable from the base station to your Mac.

  • ADE on MacBook crashes when opening downloaded library book.  Any fix?

I just downloaded ADE on my MacBook Pro, then downloaded a book from the library.  The book downloads every time I open ADE.  Then, when clicking on the book, ADE quits.  It is supposed to add it to a list to "READ", but this doesn't happen.  Any solutions?@

Follow-up... it turns out this problem was caused by a corrupted e-book file.  The test is to download another e-book, then try to open it.  At my librarian's suggestion, I tried this and it worked.  They will try to fix their broken e-book file.

    Hello A. Turner.
You may be having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?
Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you should make sure it's not coming from one of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode safe mode] and select ''Disable all add-ons''. If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. See [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes this article] for information about troubleshooting extensions and theme. You can troubleshoot plugins the same way.
If you want support for one of your add-ons, you'll need to contact its author.

  • IPhoto crashes when opening photo

Actually, the photo does not even exist! I am trying to back up my library on an external hard disk, and every time it gets to a particular photo, it stops the operation because it cannot read or write it (which is stupid, it should just note it and go on, or at least ask me if it wants to ignore it and continue). This photo is not to be found in Spotlight, in the photo library, etc. But, when I get to where it would be in iPhoto (lots of my photos are unnamed and in alphabetical order), iPhoto immediately crashes. So I cannot even get to it in iPhoto to delete it (if it were even there, I can't see it). The main thing I want to do is back up my photos. Any ideas? Thanks.

If the photo is gone but iPhoto thinks it is still there then the library is corrupted.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    Regards
    TD

  • Iphoto crashes when opening.

Whenever I try to open iphoto on my macbook pro it starts the process but eventually crashes. I have tried many times to open it but it just crashes. Whjat can I do???? would re-installing iphoto help?? Any Thoughs?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if iTunes crashed, you would enter "iTunes" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
☞ If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
☞ Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Iphoto crashing when opening nettwork library..

i have set up my mac mini as a iphoto server for my house. it runs 10.5.2
When i try to open the library trough the network on another mac mini iphoto never opens, the computer is thinking/working, and finally i get a error message that it has crashed or something. this computer also run 10.5.2.
the librar is stored on a external drive, so i can ignore acount restrictions on the library.

just found out that my mac mini that has the library on it is connected with 10mbit LAN (even if network card is 100 mbits and the router is the same). the mac mini im trying too acess the library with is connected wireless. Also tried to copy files between these to computers, and it goes verry slow.
before i set upp the iphoto server, i tested to view some pictures with preview trough nettwork, and that took me around 6-7 seconds to load the next picture. now it takes over 30-40 seconds.
    what can be wronge?

  • IPhoto crashes when ordering large, hardcover book!  iLife 11

Can anyone help? I spent many hours creating a book as a Christmas gift and when I try to order it iphoto "quits unexpectedly" after approx. page 50. I saw another thread about deleting something in keychain, quitting all other applications and dragging plist file to desktop. None of these solutions worked! I am using iLife 11 - all software is up to date! It quits during the assembly phase.

KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE is most often related to bad data. Try the following: make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

It looks like the book is corrupt. You could try deleting it and downloading it again, but I doubt that there will be any change. You would have to contact either the uploader or Apple customer service.

  • PSE 6 on Mac Book Pro Crashes when opening a picture

Whenever I try to open a picture PSE crashes. This is similar to another post but I should not be having RAM or generation issues. I have removed and downloaded from different DMGs all to no avail. Please advise.
    Thanks

Thanks for the comment but I wasn't asking about viruses.  The thread I asked on solved the other user's issue because of the Norton incompatibility. I was referring to the original question which had nothing to do with viruses.  I open elements and try to open a picture from iphoto to work on and elements quits.  Since I don't have Norton or any other anti virus program, I was hoping there was another explanation which would apply to my situation.  Any ideas?

There's really no need for Norton on the Mac - because there is no such thing as a Mac virus.  I realize that this could change tomorrow, but as of today, there is no such thing as a Mac virus.  There hasn't been for about a decade.
You can remove Norton.  I removed it from my Macs about a decade ago.
To prevent any future viruses from getting in, set up a new sub-user account on your Mac, and start using it.  Don't run your Mac as the Administrator.
When you run as a lowly user, your Mac keeps an eye over what you do, and demands the Administrator's name and password whenever you do something suspicious.  That won't be a problem 99.9% of the time.  It's only a problem when you try to install an application or a utility.
Keep that limitation in mind, and use it to your advantage.  A virus is an application that pretends to be something else.  It lures you into installing that virus onto your computer.  Let's say in the future you download what you think is a photo.  It's really a virus.  You double-click on it to launch Photoshop Elements.  Instead, you launch the virus, which starts to install itself on your Mac.
At that point, everything comes to a screeching halt when the Mac operating system stops the installation, and puts a message on the screen.  That message will say something like, "Please type the Administrator's name and password to INSTALL THIS APPLICATION into the Applications Folder."  That is your tipoff that you aren't dealing with a photo.  You are dealing with an application.
At this point, you should ask yourself, "Why is a photo trying to install anything?"  Whenever the Mac operating system asks for the Administrator's name and password, you should ask yourself if you know exactly what is being installed.
If you were running your Mac as the Administrator, then you wouldn't get this warning messages.  The Mac would say, "Well, I guess he knows what he's doing, so I'll install this application."  And the still-to-be-written virus would be installed on your Mac.  It's a lot easier to keep viruses off your computer than to try to remove them once they get in.
This is why you don't need anti-virus software on the Mac - if you have an intelligent user operating the computer as a sub-user.

  • ADE won't let me read DRM books - 4.0 crashes when opening library books (EVERY. SINGLE. TIME) so I installed 3.0 and now I get an "activation error".  I have it authorized to my ID....WHERE IS THE STAFF TO ANSWER QUESTIONS?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?

Working on a MAC with a Kobo.  ADE won't let me read DRM books - 4.0 crashes when opening library books (EVERY. SINGLE. TIME) so I installed 3.0 and now I get an "activation error".  I have it authorized to my ID....WHERE IS THE STAFF TO ANSWER QUESTIONS?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!? I have wasted hours on this and I'm getting really annoyed.

Thank you! This worked. But now I copied my files back, which was successful. But the last file did´t work. I even loaded this file from the bookstore. When I try to load this file, ADE crashes and gives me the following report:
