Iphoto crashing and more...

Running iPhoto 11, version 9.4.3 on a MacBook Pro 10.8.4.
The problem started with iPhoto when I scanned some old photos (1940's-1960's) and imported them into iPhoto.  Some photos say that they can't be edited because the original format is not supported.  If I can get that far, it usually quits unexpectedly after I tried to edit.  It became a major problem when it wouldn't let me do anything...10 seconds after iPhoto started it quit.  Everytime.  It tried to repair itself numberous times, but I finally rebuild the library by clicking command+option and started it from there.  Now it will stay working as long as I don't try to edit those photos that come up with the exclamation point/triangle before the image pops up.  But I still need to edit those photos.  Should I delete all of those photos and rescan them?  Or is there a way to find the original format and get that fixed so I can edit again?  I imported about 600 images, but only about 200 have the problem I'm mentioning.
I appreciate any and all help.  I'm seeing my family in early August and would really like to get these photos in slideshow.  Thank you!

I just remembered that I did use an old (10+ years) Epson Stylus CX7800 to scan some pictures, but it was going so slow I bought the CanoScan LIDE 110 which is much faster.  You asking me what format and me trying to find it on iPhoto made me look in the upper right corner for that information when I click on the "Info".  I can tell which ones were scanned by the Epson and which by the CanoScan.  It looks like the Epson ones are the problem images I can't edit and cause iPhoto to crash.  It seems logical that if I delete those and rescan them on the CanoScan that it would solve the problem.  Does that sound right?

  • Imported photos, deleted originals, then iphoto crashed and lost everything

I imported photos from my iphone, deleted the originals (i never do this, but figured, it's a new year so i should start cleaning up my phone!), and then iphoto crashed and now the photos i imported are nowhere to be found! help!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. There's still a good chance that the photos are in the library but just not being recognized by iPhoto. Backup the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select last three options.
    Fix #3
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
    OT
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
NOTE: this is not the same as routinely backing up your entire iPhoto library folder to protect your photos. It only protects the loss of your organizational efforts that the database file contains.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

When I activate photo streaming, iphoto crashes and closes down.  Any thoughts what would cause this?  I have Lion and paid for the new iphoto.  Thanks for any support or thoughts.

  • Iphoto crashing and ERROR message when trying to EXPORT to slide show

I am producing a simple Slide Show to be shown tomorrow at 8am.
I created it in IPHOTO but an older version. I did some tests last night and today. Worked fine.
Now that it is done I tried to EXPORT it to Quicktime, as a H.264 Quicktime movie.
    Dimension 1280x 720
Stills only and no music. Classic with simple dissolves from one photo to next.
Export and proceed and I leave it alone. After about 1/2 hour or so it crashes and give ERROR message and say
    "unable to process" or complete.
I have tried several times and changed specs. Still crashes.
What happened to Apple's Chat Support? Are then not online after a certain time?
On an IMAC with 16 Gbs of RAM, and have space left on drive. this is not complex.
anyone? It is due tonight so I can Hightail send it to AV people and it needs to be downloaded
tonight or EARLY tomorrow for showing at 8am.
thanks to anyone who can help.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if iTunes crashed, you would enter "iTunes" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
☞ If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
☞ Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • IPhoto crashes and looses modifications

Help! I just lost 3 hours of work when iPhoto '08 (version 7.1.3) crashed and left me with last night's version of the book I was making. Since there is no "Save" function, I do not know how the computer decided to keep only the version from 6 hours ago and not one from, say 10 minutes ago. Below is the crash log. Thanks in advance to anyone who can suggest where a more recent version of my book may be lurking (if one is), or what I can do to prevent another unfortunate episode.

    Anagaid:
I don't know what the problem was but I do have a way to prevent loss in the future. Check the Console log for iPhoto. Sometimes it might have a more condensed version of what caused the crash.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • IPhoto crashed and all content is now missing, how do I restore/get all content back?

My iPhoto crashed as I was trying to export a selected number of photos (to send to colleagues with Windows PC) and all content is missing. How do I restore/get all content back and in the same formet ie in their original events that I set up?

    Hi Terence, here goes:-
    iPhoto 09 version 8.1.2 (424)
Snow Leopard Mac OS X (latest update)
I had selected about 7 photos to export into 'pictures' so that I could send them by email to colleagues who don't have Apple. On returning to iPhoto all the content had disappeared and the photos I had selected did not export.
It happened on Thursday 21st Feb, nothing had been installed or deleted but I did update the latest software fairly recently (usual automated update etc). I am able to still use iPhoto but when I click the red button to close the application, it closes completely from my machine - the blue highlight button underneath the icon disappears and it does not remain in the background where I would usually have to click on 'iPhoto' in the top left hand corner.
    No error messages
Attempted to restore by accessing Time Capsule - that's another matter/problem I will need to address separately (user error I reckon on this aspect!).
As far as I know I use iPhoto as it should be ie I have all my photos in Events (not albums)
    Thanks

  • When editing my photos in albums (in 9.4.3)I enter descriptions and locations. I have had 2 iPhoto crashes and when reopened the descriptions are gone. Locations survived.  Can I get them back? Or do I have to do over?

When editing my photos I add descriptions and locations. I have had 2 recent Iphoto crashes. When relaunched the descriptions are missing but locations survived.  Can I get them back somehow?  Have I missed a "save" step on each entry? Using Iphoto '11 version 9.4.3

backup your iPhoto library, depress andhold the option and command keys, launch iPhoto and use the resulting first aid window to rebuild your iPhoto database

  • Total Catastrophe- iPhoto crashed and can't find my photos

iPhoto locked up, causing everything to lock up.  I manually rebooted, and when I reopened iPhoto my library was empty.  My Albums where still there, but empty.  My Web Galleries were there, but empty.  I also had to reconfigure my Mail and iChat...all my configurations where gone and so was my email.  Also got some weird message that my idisk was out of sync.  What the heck happened?  All I really need are those photos back.  They couldn't have just disappeared.

Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file. If not, then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • IPhoto crashed and can't restore

My iPhoto program crashed this afternoon. I have repoaded iLife '09 twice, and loaded all updates, but I still see a subdued icon with a line through it caliming there is missing pieces are damaged files.  What to do?

Exactly how are you trying to restore form TM?
Have you tried rebuilding your iPhoto library?
And your comments indicate that you may not understand iPhoto at all - you should not be inside the iPhoto library - there are no user servicable parts in it - and iPhoto does not duplicate photos  - more details of yoru work flow would help sort this out

You need to reinstall as iPhoto is missing dependencies.
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.

  • Iphoto crash and uploaded photos lost

    Hi I am flabbergasted!
I tranfered 300+ photos to iphoto, created a folder for them, and was just doing some editing when the program froze, closed and when I reoped the program the new directory was there, however there were no photographs in the folder. During the process up transfer the oroginals were deleted (as per the cue), so now I have nothing - all my christmas photos gone. Please sombody tell me how I can get them back!
    Thanks
    Tom

first off we can only communicate with words so proper usage is critical
In iPhoto folders can not hold photos - folders hold albums or other folders
So what are you calling folders? Events? Albums?
as to the importing - a best practice to is to never have any computer program (including iPhoto) delete the photos from the card but to import the photos and keep them and then after at least one successful backup cycle has completed and the reformat the card --  I use three very large (32 GB) cards in rotation so I do not reformat for typically a year or more giving me one more long term backup of my photos
Depending on exactly what you have done and what you are seeing you may have to use data recovery software to recover the photos on your memory card - downoad media recover and with the free trial see what you can recover - do not use your card until this is resolved - if necessary you can purchase media recover and recover what it sees

  • IPhoto crashes and com.apple.iPhoto.plist MISSING

I imported a rather large jpeg file into iPhoto and during the import, the application crashed.  Now the program will open momentarily, but continuously shuts down after a few seconds.  I have already tried every one of the 4 repair options when you start the program by holding down option and command.  I've tried them repeatedly, no luck.  I deleted the problem causing file completely from my computer, except that I could only get the iPhoto copy into iPhoto's trash.  The program won't stay open long enough for me to empty that trash.  Then I tried all the repair options again.  Still no luck.
I have read that you're next supposed to delete the preferences list.  However, I seem to not have this file anywhere on my hard drive.  I have gone to Users > ME > and then there is NO LIBRARY FOLDER.  So, next I tried Users > Library > Preferences > and then there is every plist file in there EXCEPT for the iPhoto one.  This is driving me crazy!  This is the first time I have ever gone browsing into my system files, so I know I didn't accidentally delete anything prior to this problem starting.  Please help!

Btw, I'm have an iMac and am using OS Lion 10.7.5 and I assume I have iPhoto '11.

  • What do I do after Iphoto crashed and will not reload?  I only get a black screen and a circle of rotating bars.

How do I bring up iPhoto after it seemed to crash while I was using it?  All I get now is a black screen with a circle of rotating bars.  I have closed it, and restarted after putting the machine to sleep and after shutting it off altogether; no luck.   Everything else is working fine.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Iphoto crashing and freezing after installing osx 10.6

    Hi everyone
I have just installed osx 10.6. Everything works fine except for iphoto. It opens alright but when I try to work with a photo, my mac mini goes psychedelic (water colour pixels?) and eventually freezes.
After re-booting manually through power switch. iphoto fires up again but when I try to edit photo, the whole machine freezes.
    so far, I have tried:
    disk repair
    disk permission repair
    safe boot
    re=building iphoto library
    but no luck.
    Any ideas, anyone?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
