IPhoto Crashing - Recovering Albums and Titles?

I installed iPhoto 6 with about a half dozen problem photos. These photos were set in an album for me to review. After exiting from iPhoto and reopening the next day I had continued crashing. After about 1/2 hour with Apple Care I was able to reinstall my library of photos - minus all titles and albums. My photos are also out of order (no longer chronological). Does anyone have a solution on how to re-import my photos with album and title detail?

Give this a try:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window. Be sure to follow the circled recommendation in the screenshot.
2 - run Option #4, Rebuild Database.
If this doesn't restore the book I doubt if there's anything the Genius bar can do to recover it thru the database files.  You may not even be able to delete the corrupted book as just clicking on it to delete may crash iPhoto.  If that happens you can either try creating a new book in the library or the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox  "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
The above will take less time than taking your MacBook Pro into the Apple store. But that's just my take of the Genius bar when it comes to iPhoto libraries.
Also you should strongly consider implementing a backup strategy ASAP.  If you don't you can count on losing file sometime in the future either from a software crash or a hardware failure, i.e. drive crash.  The easiest backup strategy to implement is to get  an external hard drive  and use Time Machine to backup your entire boot drive. Time Machine comes with every Mac and is located in the Applications folder.

  • IPhoto crashed during import and deleted photos from import

I tried to use iPhoto today to import 400+ photos from a recent holiday from my iPhone. When prompted I chose to delete the photos from my phone. When iPhoto was in the 'finishing import' stage it crashed and I was forced to force quit it. I assumed that because it said the import was complete and then asked if I wanted the photos deleted it had stopped working during the deleting and the photos would be safe in my iPhoto library. However, when I went into my library, none of the photos had been imported and all but 40 had been deleted from my phone. At the moment I stand to lose 400+ family photos.
Is there anyway to recover them?
My last backup of my iPhone included them on our family computer (I'm currently at university) - would this help? I wouldn't want to restore my phone from this backup becasue I've now got new information on the phone (incl. more photos) which I don't want to lose.
Also, I tried to import these photos in order to make sure I had them saved before upgrading to iOS6. Would doing this affect the temporary files which (I assume) the photos still are on my phone, albeit hidden? Would using my phone in other capacities (i.e. taking photos, texting, using internet, calls etc.) effect the data? Or am I wrong and the photos are in temporary files on my laptop?
    Thanks

First try the following to make sure they are not in the library but just not getting recognized by iPhoto:  make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

    Back to the damaged Library.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • How can I import images from iphoto with the albums and folders?

How can I import images from iphoto without losing the albums and folders I already created?

In Organizer, you can choose File>get Photos and Videos>From iPhoto.
Importing from iPhoto'09: If in iPhoto, you organize your media using photo references, that is, the media actually does not reside inside iPhoto library package, and are referenced through original locations, Organizer does not create new copies of those media and just refer to the original location. but if your iPhoto media reside inside iPhoto library, Organizer creates a copy all media in your pictures folder, also imports albums and tags and other metadata.
Importing from iPhoto'011: In this case, Organizer always creates a copy of your photos in your pictures folder which resides inside iPohto package. It does not import the albums and other metadata like star rating, caption etc.
    Hope this information helps!

  • IPhoto crashes on exit and when using iPhoto Library Manager

    Hi all,
When attempting to split up my 70,000 iPhoto library using iPhoto Library Manager, the application crashes when attempting to import the photos to a new iPhoto library. This is when it is trying to make iPhoto quit during the import process.
Similarly, iPhoto (under normal use) crashes when attempting to close (or quit) as you normally do. It just freezes and then eventually comes up with an error/crash message showing close, ignore or reopen dialogue box.
Yes I know I have a huge library of 70,000 images and I did do the built-in iPhoto maintenance proceedures (which sped things up when opening the library after startup and general operations I must say) but it still crashes when trying to exit.
I guess it has something to do with the size of the library, but unless I can get software to split into smaller libraries, I don't know what else I can do.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance...

  • IPhoto crashing, slowing down and freezing up.

iPhoto chashed 4 times with me while doing the same task, creating a Photo Book.
Apart from that, it would slow down while editing a pic within the book creation interactive app, and would show the little pie, like it was loading or reading something, once doing that it has frozen, and whether it would recognize it crashed, or I would have to force quit.
FYI: - I only have 60 pics tops in iPhoto
    - iPhoto is the latest version and it is updated
    - along with the computer, it is brand new, nt more than a week old.
    - it did also happen the first time to loose all the contents on the photo book, it crashed and asked to report or restart iPhoto.
Thanks for whoever can help me....

Over the weekend I did the following:
    1) Backed up my entire computer
    2) Booted from the Mac OS X install DVD, launched Disk Utility, and erased my entire hard drive
    3) Installed Mac OS X from scratch (version 10.4.7 was on the DVD) along with the base applications
    4) After the install, I logged in and ran software update until iLife '06 was patched up, and 10.4.10 was loaded with all security updates
    5) Inserted iLife '08 disk -- installed iPhoto '08
    6) Launched iPhoto '08, made sure it was working fine (with a library of NO Photos)
    7) Restored a copy of my iPhoto library to my hard drive
    8) Launched iPhoto '08 again (made sure it was STILL version 7.0.1), and saw that my book was there along with all of my photos, etc...
    9) Attempted to purchase my book. And the result was: On page 28 of 32 -- CRASH of the entire computer.
    Here's a picture of it: http://www.kmcode.com/misc/errors/iphoto08crash.jpg
Sorry, had to take a quick snapshot with the digital camera. It doesn't do well up close and such...
Anyways. This bug exists regardless of which version of iPhoto '08 you are running. I'm very peeved about it, for I spent an entire weekend backing up my computer, hunting down the original disks, reinstalling Mac OS X from scratch, downloading software updates -- and it still crashes the entire computer when I try to assemble a book or generate a PDF of the book. I am at wits end with this. And as stated before -- I can in fact create a book with autoflow with the exact same photographs, and it will send to PDF just fine. You just can't adjust any of the photo attributes!
Also, I'll note that my iLife '08 disk comes with version 7.0.1 on it from the factory. I can't seem to get to version 7.0 to see if it will work.

  • Albums and Folders missing on sidebar

In iPhoto I created Albums and Folders for various subjects on the iPhoto Sidebar.
One of these folders was for photos that I would display on AppleTV (first generation).
I don't see a way to duplicate custom Albums and Folders on the new Photos App.
I particularly want to re-create a folder for pics to be displayed on AppleTV.
Thanks for any ideas on this!

Do you have the sidebar in Photos activated? If not use the key combination of Option+Command+S to toggle it open and closed.
The Events in iPhoto at the time of conversion will be in a folder titled "iPhoto Events" and the albums under that folder.
You can create new folders and and albums with the File menu
drag whatever photos you need onto the album icon in the sidebar. Or select the photos and use the New Album menu option.

  • IPhoto behaviour with Albums

can anyone explain or point me in the direction of the reaoning behind iphotos behaviour with Albums and Smart Albums in 2 situations.
the first, is when using Airpics App and Server, the second when viewing a shared library.
my set up is my iPhoto main DB is on a headless Mini. I also have a MBP on the same wireless network that view and controls the Mini.
in situation 1, when my iPad views my Minis library via thr Airpics apps, it says it only views Albums and Smart Albums, not Events but i can see an item that is an event. it consequently is the last full import i do so is the last import considered an album or smart album?
in 2, when i view my Mini iPhoto DB on my MBP via sharing, lots of Albums and Smart Albums come up from the past that i have deleted. Where is it gettign this info from? is it old stuff from the Minis DB coming through? Or are these current or old stuf from my MBP somehow? when i open the Minis DB on my MBP using Alt-Open and selecting the DB Directly instead of over sharing, these Albums / Smart Albums dont exist. i only see what i expect to see, Currwnt set up..

    thank you again Terence.
you see ma bit of an iPhoto Guru, Terence and i dont know how else to contact you and i know its niot right to change a thread half way through but do you have any knowledge on the best way to handle this situation:
i have my iphoto on my headless Mini, controlled by MBP remotely and within the same Wi fi network when home. Iphoto over both is unusably slow. How could i combat this? im told not to use the Mini Library via MBP sleected via ALT when opening as if WiFi drops out it can corrupt. If i use the Sharing from the iPhoto.Mini to MBP, iPhoto.Mini must be open therefore iPhoto.Mini on Sharing on MBP cant be editted, only viewed. The one utility that helps is the iPhoto Manager but all that essentially does is copy from one to another over WiFi so i dont see the difference in that app doing it or me manually doing it, TBH id rather manually do it.
And i need to store the iPhoto main DB at home as iTunes and my iPad use it while i'm not there, and its now too big to carry around on a 5 year old MBP.
I like a lot of others seem lost on how to effectively manage and use iPhoto

  • Please explain the difference, data file wise, between an album and folder

First day with iPhoto. I've just finished reading most of the help files. However, I'm still confused between the differences of an album and a folder.
Specifically; I see the iPhoto Library data tree in Finder. I get that iPhoto imports pictures to the Library. But we take pictures randomly. There's a 100% certaintly that after I import the most recent images, they'll all need to be individually moved to an appropriate sub-category area. I'll make all the areas (House, Family & Friends, Skiing ,etc..).
What I don't want to have happen is to duplicate actual photo images. I'd like to move them out of the library and into their permanent home. Otherwise, the library will turn into a 3,000 photo mish mash of pictures and be unusable.
So.. do I create my new areas as albums, or as folders? My hunch is folders. Then again, it's also possible that I'm not fully understanding the libraries functions.
    Many thanks
    - Rowan

    HI Rowan,
iPhoto imports each of your camera imports or folder imports as a roll within iPhoto (set your view to View>film rolls to see them) and the Finder (under Originals/Year/roll name)
The organization within iPhoto of making albums and folders to put albums and other folders in, is only seen within iPhoto as they are actually info contained in data files. You will not see the folders and albums or even books, slideshows, calendars, etc in the finder. all the info for those is contained in data files.
The library contains all the images you have imported.
When you make Albums containing the images, you are not duplicating those images. the albums actually just reference the images that are in it.
therefor if you delete photos from an album, they will still be in your library.
If you delete photos from the library and then empty iPhoto's trash, you are deleting them from iPhoto and your hard drive.
Folders are used to organize even further within iPhoto.
Folders cannot contain loose images. You have to put images in an album first, then you can put albums in a folder.
You can also put slideshows and books etc into a folder. You can also put a folder into another folder.
There are different ways to view your iPhoto Library within iPhoto.
You can view by date, film rolls, keywords, ratings. Go to View in the menu bar and click on it and scroll to your choice.
I personally view by film rolls (imports) and keep the film rolls closed (option click on the disclosure triangle of an open roll to close all rolls)
So now I will offer you more info just in case you might need it:
--First thing to know and remember is this...Do not drag any images, folder of images into the iPhoto Library in the Finder. Images have to be imported into iPhoto within the application. Do not scan images and save them into the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder. Save them to another location such as the Pictures folder or even the desktop. You can then import them into iPhoto.
If you have already put files/folders in the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder then you will also find out that if you try to import them into iPhoto you will get an error message. No worry, just drag them to the desktop and import from there.
--All images that you import are shown in the library view. You can choose how you want to view, by rolls, by date, by rating, etc. When you put images in an Album, slideshow, book, etc, you are actually just putting pointers to those images in the library. You are not adding more images. If you delete an image from the Album it will still be in the library. If you delete an image from the library it is deleted from iPhoto's database and your hard drive (unless you have it backed up somewhere else)
--You have a folder of images on your hard drive and want to import them into iPhoto. Drag the folder of images into an open iPhoto Library window and the folder of photos will be copied into the library, resulting in a new roll with the name of the folder. You now have two copies of those photos, the ones in iPhoto's database and the ones on your desktop. You can keep the ones on your desktop that you just imported as backup or you can delete that folder.
-- you scan a picture/pictures and save it in a folder. You cannot scan directly into iPhoto or the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder.
You want all your photos in iPhoto so you import them into iPhoto.
Now you have two copies of that picture/pictures, so you can delete the originals that were in the scanned folder and keep the one/ones that were imported into iPhoto.
-- You download pictures from your camera into iPhoto.
There is now one copy of each of the pictures. (DO NOT HAVE IPHOTO DELETE THE IMAGES FROM YOUR CAMERA! DELETE THEM MANUALLY WITH THE CAMERA-if something goes wrong with the import and they are never imported and then they are deleted from the camera you might end up losing those images)
You want to change something about a picture you imported, such as
cropping it or changing the size, or changing the orientation.
Once you do that to a picture, you now have two copies of the picture
in iPhoto, the original and the edited one. The edited one will be in the library organize view. The original is packed away in an Original folder in your iPhoto Library folder under the date of the roll. You can always revert to the original by control clicking on the photo and choose "revert to orginal" You will not have this choice if you used iPhoto Diet to get rid of the Originals.
(a quick note on cropping within iPhoto...when you are in edit mode, you automatically will be in the crop mode with cross hairs to highlight the crop area. To finish cropping you must click the crop button and then go back to library view and your cropped picture will be there.
3.You want to use Photoshop or another graphic program to edit a picture in your iPhoto library.
You can open up prefs for iPhoto and choose "when double clicking on
photo ..do" choose "other" and select Photoshop. Now you can edit all
pictures in your iPhoto library in PhotoShop by double clicking. If you save the photo with the same name and as a flattened file it will be saved right into iPhoto and you will see the changes. If you don't want to save it into iPhoto then do a "save as" and save to the desktop. You will then have the original photo still in iPhoto and your new edited photo on the desktop.
Or, with iPhoto open, you can drag a picture from the library window
to your desktop (you see a + sign on the pic you are dragging). You now
have two of the same picture, one in the iPhoto library and one on your desktop. You can open up the one on your desktop in any graphic program and work on it. The one in iPhoto stays the same. You can also share/export the picture/pictures to your desktop or folder to work on them or do batch processing, etc. You will still have the originals in your iPhoto Library.
Or, you can open up the ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library/folders and option drag any
picture out of the folder to your desktop. Notice that you will see a plus sign while dragging the photo. This is copying the file to your desktop
I would advise anyone not to do this as they might forget to use the option key and drag the photo out. Next time you open iPhoto the photo will be missing.

Don't forget that in Library view you can Control click on any picture and get a contextual menu with many options. One is to revert to original.
    Backing up your iPhoto Library
    1. Burn the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder to a CD or DVD
This method will give you a burned iPhoto Library folder that can be copied back to your computer to replace a damaged library. You can also use this method to backup an old library when you want to create a new Library to use as your current library.
insert a blank CD into your internal or external CD-RW drive and copy the iPhoto library to the CD icon on your desktop. When you drag the CD icon to the Trash/Eject button in the Dock, you are given the option to burn the CD. Click Burn and the CD is created. To burn a DVD backup of your digital images, use a DVD and a SuperDrive-equipped Mac
The easiest way to burn an iPhoto Library folder in the Finder that is larger than 4.7 gig to fit on one DVD is to burn sections of the folder.
Drag the iPhoto Library folder to the desktop
Double click the folder to open it.
Drag each Year folder to the desktop.
You should be left with the iPhoto Library folder containing all the data files, and the Year folders.
Combine whatever year folders that amount closest to a DVD burn size on one DVD. Make sure that you have burned all the Year folders, then the iPhoto Library folder with all the data files.
If you ever need to use this backup, insert the DVDs into your computer and copy the folders to the desktop. Put all the Year folders back into the iPhoto Library folder. Then put the iPhoto Library folder back into the Pictures folder.
You can also check out applications for disc spanning:
    Disc-spanning software
    DropDMG
    Toast
    Dragon Burn 4
Retrospect Express-comes with some external drives
    Retrospect for Macintosh Desktop Edition
    2. Copy the ENTIRE iPhoto Library to an external drive formated for a Mac. Do not use this as your only back up as the external can also go bad.
    3. Copy the ENTIRE iPhoto Library to your iPod in disk mode
4.Creating your own CDs and DVDs for viewing in iPhoto
This method is a great way to back up Albums of older photos or even your entire library if it is small enough to fit on a DVD. This method will give you a library that will mount within iPhoto in the source column to be viewed. To import any images from this library they need to be dragged into your library in the source column.
If you just want to backup the images in your library:
    1) Within iPhoto select the images, albums or rolls you want to backup. Go to Share>Export and export them to a newly created folder on the desktop. Follow the directions in the next link.
Creating a CD or DVD to be viewed in Windows or by a photo processing company
1.. If you backed up the entire iPhoto Library by burning within iPhoto or burning the folder in the Finder, make sure the burned copy is a good working copy before you delete the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder. You delete the iPhoto Library in the finder by dragging it to the trash when iPhoto is closed. When you next launch iPhoto it will create a new empty library for you to start anew.
    2. If you burned just the images, be aware that that is all you are archiving. No metadata will travel with the images such as comments, keywords, etc.
You can then delete those images within iPhoto by highlighting them and hitting the delete key, then empty iPhoto's trash. Do this often and in groups so iPhoto will not choke on too many images.
Importing Images from the hard drive, CD, or DVD
To import a folder with subfolders of images maintaining the same organizational structure (or close to it):
Drag the folder into iPhotos viewing area.
A film roll will be created with each sub folders name. To view the rolls in the Library you need to first go to the menu bar and choose View>by film rolls.
To make each roll into an Album, highlight the tile of the roll
Go to File>new album from selection.
You will now have an Album in the source column with the images from that roll. Do this for each roll if you want them to be an Album. This is your choice.
Next, go to the menu bar and hit File>new folder
Name this new folder with the year or whatever the name was of the Parent folder containing the subfolders that you had dragged into iPhotos viewing area.
Next drag all the Albums into the respective new Parent folder you just made.
Albums- collection of images from one roll or many rolls. The Albums will be listed in your source column when you make them. The albums only contain placeholders for the images that are still in the library. They are not duplicates.
Rolls- rolls are created when you import folder of images. It will be given the name of the folder you are importing.
Rolls are also created from each import from your camera. You are given the option to name the roll at import.
Folder-a folder you create manually using the File>new folder command
Folders can hold Albums, slideshows, books, another folder, etc.
One other way you can import a folder of images and have an Album created for it as the same time it is imported as a roll in the Library view:
Drag each folder of images into the source column of iPhoto. When you see the plus sign, drop it in the source column.
An album will be created in the source column, and the roll that the album was created from will be in the library view window.
    Hope this helps!

  • IPhoto crash .... and all my albums?????

I've had the same iPhoto crash as jimshow mentioned in his post. I gotta say, it's driven me wild. It appears that it was because of a calendar I was working, which incidentally I was having some problems with, in terms of getting it to upload for printing.
Well, this isn't only a "me too" post, I want to know if aside from re-importing all my photo, I can recover the albums? As even with my most 1500 strong iPhoto library, I don't fancy the task of putting them all back into the 20 odd different albums I had before.
I wish Apple could come up with a fix for this...iPhoto 6 has been running wonderfully for over a week until this!
Regards, best wishes, and many thanks,
    Adam

    Adam,
I came across your post and I just wanted to suggest that you post your calendar-related iPhoto crash in the thread I started here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=313885
If enough people post there with the same problem, the thread will stay at the top and may get Apple's attention sooner!
Sorry to hear about your problems. I reverted back to iPhoto5 for now. I'm still waiting to hear back from Apple.
    Jim

  • My albums and slideshows disappeared from the left column when I ejected a Canon camera after a download.  My version of iPhoto '08 (V7.1.5(378)) had just crashed when I first connected the Canon camera to download.  I restarted iPhoto.....

My albums and slideshows disappeared from the left column when I ejected a Canon camera after a download.  My version of iPhoto '08 (V7.1.5(378)) had just crashed when I first connected the Canon camera to download.  I restarted iPhoto.....successfully downloaded 22 photos, and ejected Canon camera, upon which albums & slideshows highlighted blue and disappeared from the left column.  The photos still seem to be under the EVENTS and PHOTOS in the LIBRARY.  Any thoughts?

    Restore from your back up.

  • How do I recover missing iPhoto albums and pictures?

A week ago, all my iPhoto Albums disappeared that normally would appear in the left iPhoto column under LIBRARY and RECENT. When I opened the iPhoto app from both the Dock and the Applications folder, an iPhoto window opens and asks if I would like to set up my iPhoto Library. The first few times this happened, I ignored the request and tried again with the same results.
I tried unsuccessfully finding and restoring the iPhoto Library Database from my external 3TB Time Machine hard drive. I couldn't find any full iPhoto Library Database backup and my backups go back a year. Instead, all I found and restored are photos and videos that were saved outside of iPhoto on the Desktop and in hard drive folders. Several months ago, there was a similar occurrence, but I was able to restore the Library Database. With no luck this time, I eventually allowed iPhoto to start up as if it was being installed for the first time and I never had the option to load an earlier backup Library Database or choose an automatic restore from an earlier version or backup.
While trying to go through various recovery choices with iPhoto, I started getting iCloud login popups asking for my Apple ID and password. I kept cancelling these because I had not previously set up iCloud. When iCloud messages persisted, I finally used my ID and password and the popups stopped. I'm clueless why this was happening and I remain clueless as to what occurred after I tried many cancellations, then finally entered my ID and password. Since then (two days ago), there has been no evidence of iCloud operating or requiring my attention.
After holding the command+option keys to start the iPhoto app, I've tried all the radio button options, one at a time, to Repair, Rebuild, Recover, Examine with no luck. Instead, all that is found are the same files I already mentioned. When I start iPhoto now after allowing it to start up from scratch, the Library Database shows iPhoto Library Recovered Photos (2 photos), Resources (176 photos), a CD backup, Desktop, and lots of short collections of media, resources, thumbnails, and other graphics images I don't recognize and are probably Invisibles. The only photos that appear when Photos is clicked in the left colum of iPhoto are photos that were apparently imported from backed up desktop and hard drive folders. All the photos that were previously imported to iPhoto and stored in iPhoto albums no longer appear individually or in albums in the left column of iPhoto.
    I'm using a one-year old iMac running Mac OS X Version 10.7.5 with iPhoto '11 Version 9.2 (626).
I'm reasonably confident the phtoos and albums are recoverable somewhere, but I'm at a loss to find out where. I've been running Macs since 1984 and this is the first time I have been totally unable to explain or recover from an OS, hardware, or app-level problem.
Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated. If absolutely necessary, I could pack up all my gear and take it to an Apple office 23 miles away for help.

My problem was not so much the loss of pictures, but the loss of their virtual association into albums I created because the albums were no longer appearing when iPhoto was started. I was reluctant to do any reinstalls of the OS, Tme Machine, or iPhoto because I was confident the existing installs were as they should be. Instead, I explored earlier Time Machine backups of iPhoto-related files and folders. I tried several different files/folders to see what I could find when I restored and opened them. To my delight, I found an earlier "iPhoto Library (original)" that, once I restored it to my desktop, iPhoto automatically found the virtual album-photo associations that existed prior to the earlier loss of albums; the restored albums appea as they should in the left column of iPhoto. This "fix" was not intuitively obvious to me, but I was pleased it worked.
A simple iPhoto explanation through iPhoto Help would have been very helpful if the explanation would have said iPhoto Album and Smart Album photo associations are logical, not physical, and the associations and album names are store in the iPhoto Library folder.
At this point, I'm hesitant to move the restored "iPhoto Library (original)" from the desktop, perhaps to the Applications folder, because I don't want to run the risk of undoing what seems to be working. Should I leave this on the desktop or move it?

  • IPhoto crashed during file transfer. Cannot recover photos by rebuilding the library and there is library size discrepancies.

    Hi,
I am using an iPhone 4S and running iPhoto '09 version 8.1.2 (204) on OS X (version 10.9.2).
I was transferring photos from my iPhone to iPhotos with the option of deleting the originals on the phone after transfer. IPhoto crashed at some point and I had to "Force quit" the application.
Now, 3/4 th of all my pics is deleted on my iPhone and they are not in iPhoto either! I tried repairing and rebuilding the library as suggested elsewhere on this forum but nothing has worked.
The library size is currently 11.6 GB but the rebuilt library is 5.6 GB.  I think the library was around 5 GB as well before transfer. I also tried using the "iPhoto library  manager" to rebuild the library. There is no difference between the pictures in the rebuilt library and the default library, but again the new, rebuilt one is 11.6 GB and the library it uses for rebuilding 5.6 GB! So, I think the pictures are there somewhere but I am not recovering it.
Any suggestions as to how to recover deleted photos from my iPhone or to restore the iPhoto library would be muc appreciated.
    Many thanks,
P.S. I do not have a recent iTunes or iCloud backup.

If you sync photos between the Mac and other devices via iTunes there will be an cache folder created that will grow over time.  That's what the new library doesn't include and, in part, is the reason for the size discrepance.
iPhoto 8.1.2 is only marginally compatilbe with Mavericks and, as Linc suggested, should be upgraded to iPhoto 9.5.1 to be completely compatible.

  • I have iphoto 5.0.4  My computer crashed while trying to quit iphoto and when I rebooted my albums and organized folders had all disapeared.  All my photos are still there but how do I retrieve my folders and albums?  I tried rebuilding the database

My computer crashed while quiting iphoto.  When I rebooted my albums and folders had disappeared.  How do I get them back?  I tried rebuilding the database to no avail.  I am using iphoto 5...
    Thank you community!

Most simple solution: restore from your back up.
Other than that, try Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
