IPhoto crashing/won't rebuild

My iPhoto has been crashing constantly and automatically restarting my computer for the past two months. About three weeks ago I got the "Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable" message. I was able to use the "command & option" keys and rebuild my library without a problem. iPhoto was continuing to crash non-stop, but I had my photos back. Today I got that message again. I tried rebuilding my library the same way as before and every time I do I get the same message over again. I'm unsure what to do to get my photos back and hopefully get iPhoto running normally again. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Corrupted Album on Iphoto that won't rebuild

Anybody know why a photo album in Iphoto that previously worked would suddenly become corrupted? It was fine until I tried to transfer it to a USB, and now whenever I try to open it, Iphoto freezes and shuts itself down. This was the start to a whole slew of problems on my computer, but I've fixed all of the others and this one still remains. I've run the rebuild option 3 times in three different ways and nothing has helped. Actually, it somehow ruined a different album's thumbnail and that won't fix either.
    Any ideas and/or suggestions? Thanks@

  • IPhoto library won't rebuild

My iPhoto library photocount recently and suddenly dropped from approx. 14000 to around 5700. All the photos/originals are still in the library folder but all 2006 events and most 2007 events have disappeared and all 2006/7 albums are consequently empty.
I've downloaded iPhoto library manager but the rebuild feature fails to retrieve the missing events.
Is there anything else I can try before I resort to reloading the missing images?

    Josephine
This sounds like a damaged library file, I'm afraid.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums back.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • IPhoto 11 won't launch and crashes every time I try to rebuild the library. Urgh.

iPhoto 11 won't launch- it's another case of an infinite skinny wheel. I've tried rebuilding the library numerous times, each time it takes about a day and each time it crashes near the end. This is just ridiculous. Any tips folks?
APPLE if you can hear me... shouldn't you be testing this stuff prior to release? I know you do but I mean, like REALLY testing it? This is my second iPhoto upgrade disaster. The last time I lost my entire library, had to spend £80 on recovery software that recovered not only most of my photos, but every image cached on my machine. So then I had the fun of sorting through literally thousands of images...
And I only got the upgrade becasue my iPhone is refusing to sync, freezing on the iPhoto bit. Gah.

Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • HT2638 iPhoto crashes when I click on the "Rebuild" button????

When I launch iPhoto 9.2.3 (OSX 10.6.8), it comes up saying the photo library has become unreadable, and instructs me to restart the app whilst holding the command and option keys down. When I do this, it gives a panel where I can select to rebuild the photo library. I click on Rebuild, and it crashes immediately without a crash log or event in syslog.
Anyone know how to rebuild the photo library manually?
Where does the file reside on the system?

Try this:  make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
    3 - reboot.
4 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
If that doesn't help log into another user account on your Mac and see if iPhoto will work as it's suposed to there. If it does then the problem lies with your account.  If iPhoto crashes in the other account a reinstall of iPhoto is indicated.
To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and from the /var/db/receipts/  folder,
Then install iPhoto from the disk it came on originally and apply all appropriate updaters.

  • IPhoto crashed during file transfer. Cannot recover photos by rebuilding the library and there is library size discrepancies.

    Hi,
I am using an iPhone 4S and running iPhoto '09 version 8.1.2 (204) on OS X (version 10.9.2).
I was transferring photos from my iPhone to iPhotos with the option of deleting the originals on the phone after transfer. IPhoto crashed at some point and I had to "Force quit" the application.
Now, 3/4 th of all my pics is deleted on my iPhone and they are not in iPhoto either! I tried repairing and rebuilding the library as suggested elsewhere on this forum but nothing has worked.
The library size is currently 11.6 GB but the rebuilt library is 5.6 GB.  I think the library was around 5 GB as well before transfer. I also tried using the "iPhoto library  manager" to rebuild the library. There is no difference between the pictures in the rebuilt library and the default library, but again the new, rebuilt one is 11.6 GB and the library it uses for rebuilding 5.6 GB! So, I think the pictures are there somewhere but I am not recovering it.
Any suggestions as to how to recover deleted photos from my iPhone or to restore the iPhoto library would be muc appreciated.
    Many thanks,
P.S. I do not have a recent iTunes or iCloud backup.

If you sync photos between the Mac and other devices via iTunes there will be an cache folder created that will grow over time.  That's what the new library doesn't include and, in part, is the reason for the size discrepance.
iPhoto 8.1.2 is only marginally compatilbe with Mavericks and, as Linc suggested, should be upgraded to iPhoto 9.5.1 to be completely compatible.

  • Iphoto crashing on start after system rebuild

My system had major work - was moved to new disk, os reinstalled, files restored via time machine - now iphoto crashes on startup. Console log....
I also downloaded iphotomanager - and it says the Data file is missing.....
I tried to download that latest update - and it won't run because its "already installed".

  • Iphoto crashes

iPhoto won't finish an import without crashing or even when I'm just browsing the library it crashes unexpectedly. This has happened on rare occasions in the past, but now it won't stay open for more than five minutes. I've got over 11,000 photo's in iPhoto, could this be the problem? Does anyone have this many or more photo's and does iphoto work?
    I appreciate any helpful info.
    Thanks

This is advise from Alley Sibley on Nov. 4 on a similar problem:
I just had this same issue pop up for my library, last month. I have about 25,000 photos, roughly 16Gb. Same exact symptoms you describe. I recalled some old procedures and did some digging. Once upon a time iPhoto touted a library rebuild procedure. It's more buried now, but it still exists.
NOTE: do a bit of research first, to get all of the tips. Searching for "rebuild library" in iPhoto help, brings up some info.
Basically, for 5.0 and later, hold down Command and Option while you launch iPhoto, until your prompted for the rebuild. 5.0.2 brought in some extra options. I found the "orphan photos" one did some odd things. It created several hundred duplicates. "Orphans" I guess. At least one source I read recommended skipping this one. On a second go around I skipped this, and got cleaner results. Be aware it will take quite a long time. Took about 2 hours for me, though the progress indicator started at 4.5 hours.
Do yourself a favor and backup your library first. Do it. I hope you are normally anyway, with a library your size. Eventually everyone suffers a meltdown.
I played with a couple iterations, because I was also trying to split the library at the same time, thinking it was getting too big. But in the end, the rebuild on my whole library did the trick. I've done a dozen imports since, totalling a few hundred photos, and everything is back to normal. Much to my relief. I also found my library decreased in size by several gig, about 20%. Can't explain why, but everything is still very much in place. Albums, photos, etc. I'd be curious if you see the same result.
I am about to try it myself, so I'll keep you posted.

  • IPhoto crashes when it starts up

I bought iLife 11' the day it came out and everything on it works great, except iPhoto. It was really cool when I first got it. It worked pretty well the first time I opened it. But then after that, It would not open up all the way again. It will get to the grayish screen and then the little spinning color wheel (or Beach ball as I like to call it) will come up and stay there for about a minute until the crash report comes up. I also noticed that each time I tried to start up iPhoto, it would take it longer and longer to finally crash. I don't know if that helps or not. I have already deleted my plist, iPhoto receipts in HD/Library and reinstalled iLife '11. I even ran the highly-suspect Repair Disk Permissions and zapped the PRAM, just for luck. iPhoto still won't start up, and I don't know what to do now.
    Can someone please help?

I have more if you need it.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Backup the library and try the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in the User/Library/Application Support/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.

    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select options #1, #2 and #6.

  • IPhoto crashed while importing photos

While importing photos, iPhoto crashed. Now the pictures are damaged. Is there a possibility to regain them or salvage them?

I recovered the pictures in "Today" but they are damaged. You see the pictures in iPhoto but they are very small and there is no information about the picture availabe (shuttertime, diafragma etc).
Those are not your photos, only the thumbnails used for display.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Uprgraded to yosemite all good but iphoto crashes every time I attempt to upgrade the photo library

    Hi all,
    This is driving me insane.
I have uprgraded to yosemite all good but iphoto crashes every time I attempt to upgrade the photo library:-
I have upgraded to yosemite 3 times in case thats where there problem was - no.
I removed and reinstalled the new iphoto program about 5 times - no avail.
I have installed iphoto library upgrader but it says that my library does not need it.
I have installed iphoto9.1 update but it states that it cannot be installed on the disc as iphoto 9.0 or later must be installed but i have installed the latest version?
I have even upgraded the server and i paid for this.
When i open iphoto in applications it will open then state that i need to upgrade the library - i am happy to do this.
I agree to this then iphoto crashes and closes before doing anything else.
I have also tried holding the option button and opening iphoto but it crashes all the same.
I am at a loss what to do. I could not access my library at all but i managed to find all my pics in finder so i have backed everything up and deleted all the files in the hope this would fix it - nope. Still the same.
Does anyone have any suggestions?? Please oh please, this has taken days and countless wifi hours...
    TIA...

  • Repeated iPhoto Crashes

I'm trying to deal with the side-effects of corruption from a bad disk. The disk has been replaced and an archive and install done on the computer. I'm now trying to fix iPhoto (6.0.6). When I launch it it crashes after about 10 seconds. I've done all the following:
    1) Reinstalled iLife '06 and reapplied the updaters.
    2) Scanned the iPhoto library for JPEG files that won't open in Preview. I used the Finder to trash a handful of files that failed this test.
    3) Tried multiple times to rebuild everything in the list offered by launching with Command and Option held down. iPhoto crashes just as it finishes rebuilding the thumbnail caches.
I hesitate to use the brute-force method of rebuilding the iPhoto library that Apple's documentation describes, because, as it mentions, that looses all metadata, such as album names.
Can anyone suggest any other way to deal with this problem?

None of those steps helped. I'm now running the iPhoto library rebuild process to see if that works any better with the permission fixes.
I've discovered that I have an older version of the same iPhoto library (without the attempts to repair it) that will allow iPhoto to launch without crashing. Later today I plan to copy it to the iMac and try to rebuild that library.

  • The pictures in several events I imported disappeared, only the event names remain. Now iPhoto crashes when I try to import new files. Any ideas?

I imported several hundred pictures to different events. Some directly from a Canon EOS camera (large card) and some form old CD's. The import process went fine. But I noticed some events were empty after having seen them in the library. Thought it was my mistake and may have moved the pictures to other event. The last CD I was importing could not be read and iPhoto hanged. I had to force turn off the laptop and when restarted, several of the newer events were also empty and now iPhoto crashes when I try to Import to Library. Does anybody has had an experience like this? I really need to recover the pictures because I already deleted them from the camera. Help will be greatly appreciated.

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
