Iphoto Damaged?

Hi Guys!
I just bought my mac on new years eve and was playing on Iphoto yesterday. It crashed for some reason so I turned off the mac and when I turned it on this morning to play with it again, it pops up with a message saying that 'Iphoto cannot be opened because the file may be damaged or incomplete'
This is my first mac and dont know my way fully round the system yet so please any help can you describe in detail please.
Thank you!
Simon

The problem with looking to 9 month old threads for re-installing instructions is that they get out of date - made so by the fact that you're on  different OS now. The receipts are in a different place in 10.7 compared to 10.6, for instance. So now the r-install suggestion runs:
To re-install iPhoto
1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
/var/db/receipts/
2c: on 10.7 they're at
/private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.
You can re-install only iPhoto from yor disk. Just opt to so a custom install. It's an option on the lower left hand side of the installer window.
There are two ways to rebuild the iPhoto database. The built-in version is accessed simply by holding the command and alt keys on startup of the app. You can also download a 3rd party app called iPhoto Library Manager

    Calm down.
I did check the names and in fact mentioned them in my post.
The way I read it, they both have the same problem (referred to in the Title of the thread). aryafrommentone even said he/she (can't tell the gender by the name, sorry) had the same problem. Yes, I know aryafrommentone had a few different issues and kind of hijacked the thread.
Yes, I know the dates. And in fact mentioned that in my post.
Terrence, I am sorry if I offended you and please do not include yourself in the "we all" that knows what they were talking about.
And Terrence, I am also sorry I only had the same iPhoto problem today and not in January.
    Terrence, have a nice day.

  • Can't start iPhoto (damaged) after 10.4.4. upadate - how to reinstall?

I've seen threads on this topic already, and they suggest reinstalling the OS. Am I missing something here - reinstall the entire OS just because the 10.4.4 upgrade broke my iPhoto? Please tell me that's not so!
I keep my iPhoto in a separate Multimedia folder along with other like apps. After the 10.4.4. update, I found a new copy of iPhoto in my Applications folder, so I copied it over the old version. Then the new version wouldn't start. Upon inspection, I see that the new version is only 150 kb in size, so it was obviously damaged. (which is why when I try to start it, I get that message about "cannot start application 'iPhoto' because it may be damaged...". So now what?
My MacMini came with Panther, and I subsequently got a 10.4 Tiger DVD sent to me. What do I have to do to reinstall iPhoto (which apparently doesn't come with Tiger, and so is not on that DVD). Is it possible to just reinstall the one app?
    thanks
    S

    Answering my own question here...
I found my Panther (OS X 10.3.7) DVD and inserted it in the drive while holding down the Shift key. Eventually I was offered a chance to install Mac OS X and bundled applications OR Only bundled applications. I chose the latter, and allowed the installer to install of the bundled applications (Quicken, iMovie, iDVD, Garage Band, some games, and iPhoto). Since I keep all of my applications in subfolders off the main Applications folder, it was easy to spot the old versions that were being reinstalled, and then simply put them in the Trash (the new versions are still in their folders). When iPhoto was reinstalled, I copied that to my /Applications/Multimedia folder. after that, all was well. I was then able to upgrade to version 5.0.4 (available Apple's website), and when it opened, all my photos were still available.

  • Just installed iLife and get error message on iPhoto - damaged or incomplete

I have a Mac version 10.9.4. iPhoto worked fine.
I previously had a Mac and bought iLife 11 for it.
I have just installed the iLife 11 on the new Mac.
Now my iPhoto will not work. The error message I get is "You can't open the application iPhoto because it may be damaged or incomplete.'
I don't want to delete the app and re-install it yet because I fear losing all my precious photographs.
Can anyone tell me if my photographs will be saved? I have literally thousands.
    Is there any other fix?

Your photos are stored in your iPhoto Library in your Pictures folder.  Reinstalling iPhoto will not delete the iPhoto library, only the iPhoto application will be replaced.
The iPhoto version, that comes with the iLife '11 DVD is not compatible with OS X 10.9.4, you need to install iPhoto 9.5.1 from the App Store. Remove the damaged iPhoto.app version from the Applications folder and download iPhoto 9.5.1 from the Purchased tab of the App Store.

  • IPhoto "damaged or incomplete"

    Hello all.
I'm hoping somebody might be able to help me out. I'm running the latest version of Mountain Lion on a new MacBook Pro. I installed iLife 11 so I could get iWeb back and the install bugged out my current iPhoto. The icon is "ghost busters" over and when I try to open it, I get an error saying iPhoto is "incomplete or damaged". Does anyone know how I can reset or restore my iPhoto back?
    Thanks,
    G

In the future, like if you wanted to install iDVD from the iLife 11 disc, do a Custom install and select only iDVD or the app you want rather than install the entire suite of apps.

  • IPhoto damaged or incomplete-Don't want to lose photos

My I mac is about 4 months old. Yesterday I installed iWork 09, no problem. Today there were updates for my i work, so I downloaded and updated my iWork. After that my iPhoto is damaged or incomplete. I cannot access my photos due to iPhoto's malfunction.
I am afraid I will lose my photos. If I reinstall iphoto will I lose my photo's?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You probably have a damaged iPhoto library but your image files are safe. Did you repair disk permissions after installing iWork and it's updates? If not do so, reboot and try iPhoto again.
Next, backup the library and try the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in the User/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select options #1 and #6.

  • Iphoto-damaged, I rebuilt database,it worked but comes back when I quit iPhoto

My Iphoto is damaged and I cant open it, if I do there comes a alert : Your Iphoto Library is damaged or unreadable and cannot be opened. Please restore from backup. I googled it and saw that I could rebuild it by holding ''command'' and ''option'' keys and open Iphoto, I tried all the options and the last one, Rebuild database, woked and I could see my photos, and I thought everything was okay until I was dragging photos between folders and the photos didn't move, then Iphoto crashed/quit or something and when I open it again I always get the message like I got at first. I want to fix it and can someone please help me with that

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto damaged after Lion upgrade

iPhoto app (iLive 11) now has the prohibited app icon and when opened says that iPhoto.app may be damaged or incomplete. A few other apps are the same way such as Mac The Ripper, IE, OmniPage etc. though I'm less concerned with those.
    Any suggestions?

Yeah I ran software update until there were no more before upgrading to Lion. The other iLife apps seem to work.

  • IPhoto damage

While running OS 10.2.8 I attempted to install iPhoto 5.0.2 not realizing it wouldn't run on my system. When I realized what I had done I went ahead and upgraded system to 10.4.10. When I first opened iPhoto it stated that my library had to be upgraded so images could be read in 10.4. As it was doing that iPhoto crashed. When I opened it again same statement and it went ahead and loaded my pictures. I worked with it that time and all seemed well. Since then I have been unable to use iPhoto. Gets to "loading pictures" and hangs. I've read through every discussion here and tried everything everyone else has tried and nothing has worked. I attempted to reinstall iPhoto and it won't be recognized by system. Only iPhoto is affected so obviously I've damaged something in attempting to install a program that was incompatable. But what can I do now! Do I have to reinstall all of my software? So sad!

Occasionally a plist gets corrupted in your preferences folder, example: > com.apple.iPhoto.plist > when you remove it from your Preferences folder and then reopen iPhoto, iPhoto rebuilds a new .plist.
When an application starts behaving strangely that is one of the first things that I do. This will usually fix the problem along with repairing permissions and restarting.
Restarting in safe mode by holding down the shift key until the Apple logo on the gray screen appears release the Shift key, after OSX is open, open the application see if it opens then and restart normally.

  • IPhoto damaged/won't open. Can't rebuild with option key.

Out of nowhere, my iPhoto won't work. I'm new to Mac and don't know how to fix this without losing all my pictures. Please help! I'm very frustrated and worried that my pictures are gone.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

download iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  and rebild using it - it creates a totally new seperate library leaving theoriginal untouch so you loose nothing if you do not like the results
BTW - your first priority should be to purchase an external hard drive at least 2 1/2 times the size of your internal drive and set up Time Machine - with no backup you are 100% guarenteed to lose your photos and all of your files sooner or later - bad things do happen and you must always have a backup as insurance - you would not drive without insurance, you should not run your computer withou the insurance of a backup

Hi, I just bought my new MacBook Pro, 2 months ago. It came with Mac OS X Lion (10.7.1) WITHOUT any OS X installing discs. When I first launch iPhoto, it looks okay, but last week I updated my mac to 10.7.2 and it just looks like the icon below:
