Iphoto database got disconnected during thumbnail rebuild; can't open

iphoto will not access iphoto library.
OS version is 10.5.8 and iphoto version is 7.1.5.  The iphoto library is on external drive.
Today when opening iphoto, I was prompted to "Rebuild thumbnail for iphoto".  During that process, the external drive USB got disconnected from our MacBook Pro.  The process failed and produced a Damaged File folder on the external drive.  Within the folder are two files: one is 000095a7 AlbumData.xml and 00009505 live.2.indexPosition file.  I tried to repair database using (Option + Command keys) while opening iphoto but it did not work.
I believe that the pictures are still in tack since the library size is same (34.4G).  How can I fix this problem ?

Restore from back up is the surefire solution.
Other than that:
Try these in order - from best option on down...
1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • I can see thumbnail but can't open psd file,photoshop 7

I have no idea to what is going on, but I did all this work and now that I try to reopen the psd file, I can't.
I don't see anything, no layer, no photo nothing.
I am using window xp. got the scratch setup on an external drive with plenty of space. got 4gof memory and plenty of processing power.
once again I can see the thumbnail but can't open the psd file.
    Thank you for your help.

I got it to work. I think my main problem was since my psd file crashed I was using existing pdf to save as psd. well that didn't go well with photoshop. Plus the fact my scratch was in an external location. Once I recreated the drawing and installed an additional hard-drive where I relocated the scratch file I was set to go. I now can save and reopen the file with no issues.
I would like to thank everyone who helped me with this issue.

  • When trying to open iphoto I get the error message "You can't open the application iPhoto because it may be damaged or incomplete." How do I fix this and get my photo's back?

When trying to open iphoto I get the error message "You can't open the application iPhoto because it may be damaged or incomplete." How do I fix this and get my photo's back?

    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.

    2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List* there.
For older versions that have been installed from Disk you'll need these additional steps:
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type

*Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

  • Got an error message "You can't open the application iMovie because it may be damaged or incomplete"  What do I do next to try to fix?  Thanks.

I tried accessing imovie after not using it for a long time and got an error message "You can't open the application iMovie because it is damaged or incomplete. I'm not sure how to go about addressing it.  Your suggestions would be very much apprecaited.

Judging by your OSX, I presume that your iMac would have come with 2 installation discs.
iMovie and all the iLife software will be on disc 2.
Run the disc and re-install iMovie.
After that, do a software update.,
    Best,

iPhoto has somehow uninstalled itself, or I've done something wrong. If I try to open iPhoto, it gives me this message: "You can't open the application "iPhoto" because it may be damaged or incomplete". I have an iMac OS X. How do I reinstall iPhoto please?

What is your iPhoto version and how did you install it originally?
If it came with a new mac and Lion or Mt. Lion installed, you can delete iPhoto from the Applications folder (don't empty the Trash) and download it again from the "Purchased" tab of the App Store.
If you have bought the iLife CD, reinstall iPhoto from the installation media, after deleting it from the Application folder.
Or if your Mac came with an older MacOS X, but iLIfe preinstalled, use the system Install CDs,  see Terence Devlin's post here:  Re: My iPhoto isn't working. Error message says "you can't open the app "iPhoto" because it may be damaged or incomplete.

P.S: This may not only be a problem of a broken iPhoto. What did you do, directly before this happened? Did you run a program, that will clean the Mac to save space, like "Clean My Mac" or "Mac Keeper"? These little helpers can be risky and overdo it and remove too much. Then it might be safer to reinstall your system, because other essential files might be missing now.

  • IPhoto doesn't recognize .jpg files and can't open it. What may I do now?

iPhoto doesn't recognize .jpg files and can't open it. What may I do?

a common problem is that you don't have permission to upload those files, but it is an easy fix
    1) Finder
    2) Users(it should have the account name on it)
    3) pictures
    4) right click on iphoto library then click info
5 on the bottom of the new window there should be a sharing and permissions tab
    6) make sure you have permission to read & write
The only other problem I can think is that you are having problems with hard drive space. if so you might want to clean up your hard drive to free up some space. please let me know if that worked for you.

  • Spinning ball-o-doom after / during thumbnail rebuild

So I opened iPhoto 6 and not a single photo loaded. Just blank with the dreaded SBOD. So, I do the whole "option + Apple" thing to rebuild the thumbnail cache. I get the window, select the first three options and let it crank. and crank. AND CRANK. Nada. Call back in the SPOD for an extended show. I force quit and try it again. Exactly the same. Here's a strangest bit. My albums appear... sorta. I can't see them all unless I drag something over it or move the window close enough to let an active window from another program overlap it. That will reveal the albums but, naturally I can't select them because of the Ball-o-Doom that takes over iPhoto.
So... The pictures are all there on the HD and I can select them fine individually in the finder. What I REALLY don't want to do it have to reassemble the albums. My questions are...
Is there some trick I'm missing (plist that can be deleted and fix all)
or... Is there some way to burn down iPhoto, reinstall, reimport and then put the old albums back in a way that will connect automatically with the library and keep me from having to do this all manually for something like 5000 photos?
    Tanks!

Deepish Thought - or may I call you Deep for short
    Start with the troubleshooting basics:
    1. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
    2. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the home / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
    3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.
If these don't help you may have a damaged db file:
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums back.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • My Nokia X6 got disconnected during my software up...

    Hello....
I wanted to update my software so I plugged it into my PC, everything was going fine, the update started and then my PC decided to not recognise the USB anymore and my phone got disconnected !!!! First it went blank, so I switched it off. Took out the battery, tried to put it back on but the screen was black and it was constantly vibrating like mad!!
I read quite a lot of posts about problems similar to mine, but there is a slight issue here.. My red.green buttons arent working at all. I suspect people from the service that were fixing my phone before forgot to "plug" the buttons because before everything was fine but I was too lazy to go back and managed to live withough these buttons so I cant try red/green and camera button to restart,
What to do? Nokia care point? Does my warranty cover things like that?
PS sorry that my post is a bit chaotic, slightly stressed because of the death of my Nokia X6!!!
    Thanks ...

Though the ONLY solution that remains is to visit Nokia Care..this is for future reference if you had not read the instructions / prompts properly when the Software update was started. The phone switches OFF and ON during the process, and when it switches OFF, it shows you the message that the connection with the phone is lost  (..as is obvious..).. Simply ignore such messages and let the phone switch ON again and the connection established to continue with the update... Think this is what has happened in your case..and physically disconnecting the phone midway left it dead..
Sorry, if it was not the case and something else..

  • Exclamation point comes up when trying to open pic thumbnail.  Can't open movies.

When I try to enlarge a pic a fuzzy exclamation point comes up.  Also, I can't open any movies in Iphoto.  What's up with that?

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or lter:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

Likely that is for IntelMacs only.
If the iPhoto Library was ever "touched" by a later version of iPhoto, then you get the can't open message.

Working on a pdf document linking to other pdfs and got a (43) error message and can't open the document. How to fix.

    Hi dotcofton,
Is it possible that the PDFs you're working on are on a USB? Windows can return this error when a device is no longer accessible by Windows.
Please let us know if that is not the case, and we will go from there.
