IPhoto database out of wack

Hello,
I was looking in the iPhoto Library package and under originals I have some directories labeled what the event is named, but most are just a date. Anyway to get those directories to match up with the event names?
Also if I go into recovery mode and tell it to find orphan photos, it labels ALL of my photos as orphans (doubles actually) and then messes up my database if I say no. Any suggestions about how to get this fixed without rebuilding my entire library again? Thanks!

Standard Warning:
Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
Anyway to get those directories to match up with the event names?
No. As of iPhoto 09 there is no longer a correlation between the Events in the iPhoto Window and the folders in the iPhoto Package File.
Also if I go into recovery mode and tell it to find orphan photos, it labels ALL of my photos as orphans (doubles actually) and then messes up my database if I say no.
How does it "mess up your database"?

  • Multiple iPhoto databases on 1 mac?

is there a way to have more than 1 iPhoto database on a computer?
for example, if i want to have on my mac at work 2 different database files, one work related photos and another for personal photos. i would like to have a separate database for selected photos from my home computer, say a vacation trip... i don't want to have 1 iPhoto database with both work picture and personal pictures mix in the same database...
another way to think of this is like the following... if i set up an album, is it possible to save/export an album out of the main iPhoto database and save it to another iPhoto database on the same computer?
when i get jpgs, even at work, i normally store the jpgs in the folder with the project that they are associated with... i never use iPhoto because i prefer to keep the photos local to the particular project or topic that the belong to... for me, keeping all photos in 1 location is like organizing my mac filing system so that all of my excel files are in 1 directory on my computer, regardless of what project the excel files pertain to... when i'm working on a project, then all files are in the same location, the project folder... when i archive a project, then all the files, including the jpgs, get archived with that folder... if i transfer that project to someone else, then they get all files for that project... and i can remove that project from my computer since it is archived onto a disk or external hard drive...
another example is how filemaker works. i can make as many copies of a filemaker database as i want in and save each copy in a different location on my computer... i don't have the clutter of all the data unrelated to the project i'm working on in that file mixed in with the project for that folder... so i can keep a database for each project with only the data for that project, and that database gets archived, transferred, and removed with the project folder... if i update the database, i don't have to work on updating data from old projects that i'm not working on any more... if i'm working with someone on the database for a specific project, we don't have to filter out data from all the other projects...
if iPhoto doesn't allow this, is there other photo library software that does do this? my needs are very basic, only need date, title, maybe tags/keywords, or notes, and the ability to search these fields... i have no need to manipulate or edit the jpegs... no slide shows, no music, no book making...
    thanks for any suggestions...

As Larry says, multiple libraries are easy and available.
another way to think of this is like the following... if i set up an album, is it possible to save/export an album out of the main iPhoto database and save it to another iPhoto database on the same computer?
To move pics/albums/events between Libraries you’ll need iPhoto Library Manager.

  • Misc questions - Old Toad - back up to dvd's and iphoto database files

    Old Toad
    Burning dvd's for back up.
I see that if I command-click Event folders the size increases down where it says information in the left bottom corner. Keep it to 4gig or less for each dvd. That works for me. When doing this does it also save any keywords etc.
I would happily go through my library this way to get a secure iphoto archive. Safest way... no?
If I did have to restore from these, what happens... is it like re-importing them, like Import to library under file menu.
(I haven't decided on an external back up HD system yet. Plus they can fail too. Right now I have 3 computers, they can talk via ethernet. One has an additional internal which i've been using to back up Mail, Ical, Address book, and other info like plist etc. Including my wife and 2 kids, I have 4 users to manage.)
Thanks for any advice you have.
ps./ I went to your site. What's up with this font - HelveticaNeue.dfont. Do I need this?
I downloaded the iphoto db back up. Will readme to figure out. (where exactly does the iphoto database file exist)
    Thanks again.
    Dave Stamm

    David:
If you use the Share->Burn menu option you will preserve the keywords, comments and titles.
Burning to DVD is a good way to archive the photos for later use in iPhoto if necessary. To get those photos back into an iPhoto library just mount the disk with iPhoto open. It will show up in the left hand pane under the Events and Photos icon. Drag the entire disk icon or drag individual albums or events (not shown in the video screenshot below) onto the Events icon like this.
However, for a way to quickly recover from a damaged library I suggest a backup copy of the library on a second hard drive. You can perform incremental backups of the library, copying only new or editied files, with a backup application like Synk. It only takes about a minute or less to perform an incremental backup. There are several other backup applications that can do incremental backups on iPhoto Library packages. Yes external HDs can fail but having both fail at the same time would be unusual unless you were to experience a power surge that would blow everything powered up. I have an external HD that I only turn on when I do a backup of specific files and folders (in addition to Time Machine), daily or every other day.
The Helvetica Neue font is what iPhoto 8 uses for Event titles, the number of photos selected and being dragged, etc. If it is missing or deactivated you wouldn't be able to change Event names or click and drag photos. If you're not having that problem there's nothing to worry about.
The database file resides inside the iPhoto Library package which is in the Pictures folder (default location).

  • Flip Transition in IPhoto Blacks out

when i put random transitions and convert the photos into a slide show, all of the "flip" transitions black out just prior to the the next photo. how can i fix that. I just purchased and reinstalled the ILife '06 thinking this would fix it, but it hasn't.

    WuD:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. First run Disk Utility and repair disk permissions. If that doesn't help, download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto application with the settings shown here, substituting your account name for mine. You can either type in the path to the applicaion or just drag the application into that field.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • 9.1 Update Requires Upgrading the iPhoto Database Again?

I had iPhoto 9.0.1 installed and running fine. When I updated to 9.01, it ran the "Upgrading iPhoto database". I just installed the 9.1 update, and it is "Upgrading iPhoto database" again (and much slower this time). Is everyone having this experience?
The other odd thing, is that on startup, the iPhoto 9.1 saw all the iPhoto library backups I have, and asked me which to use. That never happened before.
    David

Thanks for your response TD, but this App, iPhoto 11 came already installed on my computer.  I registered my computer, but you can't register a product without a serial number.  I don't have the iPhoto 11 serial number because it came installed on my computer already.  I tried re-installing iPhoto 9.1 after registering my computer and got the same error message.  However, I did find out that I hae 90 days of complimentary phone support.  So I will be giving Apple a call.

  • Sharing One iPhoto Database Between Two Accounts

Below is a reply to a question I have regarding sharing photos with my wife on the same Mac. I would like for us both to able to upload, edit, and use photos from the same iPhoto database. Do all of the buggaboos listed in the reply below still apply?

    Tom
For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
    What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

  • Iphoto keeps dropping out. Sometimes other programs do too such as Software Update. They other programs seem to drop randomly but iPhoto drops out constantly. Is there a solution?

iPhoto constantly keeps dropping out. Other programs do at times but iPhoto drops out constantly. Does anyone know what causes this?

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • IPhoto scrolls out of control

I'm really getting #$%&* off at iPhoto. I'm organizing a semi large library of just over 1000 images in approximately 120 rolls. Here's the problem: when I drag and drop images from one roll to another, at some point which I can't exactly determine, iPhoto kicks into overdrive and scrolls so fast that I can't see the rolls. If I try to reverse (inevitable as it's impossible to stop where you want when iPhoto is in Warp speed), all the while still holding down the click button on my mouse, iPhoto goes in reverse just as fast. It's impossible to stop and drop the image where I want. What usually happens is I just drop it somewhere and then have to re drag and drop to the correct roll.
Is there anyway of controlling the speed iPhoto scrolls at? When I first start dragging an image, iPhoto scrolls at an appropriate speed and slowly accelerates. Then, all of a sudden, like I said, it kicks in the afterburners and essentially becomes useless.
    Any help?

    TD.
Thanks, that's a useful article. I'll check out the USB overdrive and see if it has some functions I'd like.
But again, for me it's not a mouse issue. Unlike the article, I never have this problem outside of the library in iPhoto.
It happened again yesterday, so let my try to describe it more carefully.
I had just uploaded some pictures from a camera card into iPhoto. They were put in a new roll (as always). I wanted to move them up to an existing roll with pictures from the same card. I selected the new roll. Then I began to drag them up to the roll where I wanted them. I had perfect control with the mouse as I moved the drag image up the screen. But the target roll was above it, off screen. When I moved to the top where iPhoto begins to scroll the rolls downward, it was fine at first. I even am very careful to just let it scroll a little at a time, to keep it from accelerating (Notice that the mouse dosn't move much here, it's iPhoto moving the rolls to put them on screen.) I had no trouble getting my target roll onscreen, highlighting the roll name, and dropping in the first set of imports.
But when I uploaded more pictures on another new roll and tried to move them, iPhoto freaked out. Again I selected the new roll and dragged it up to the top of the window. With the mouse just inside the top of the window, where it activates iPhoto to move the rolls down, I could see the open target roll approaching as rows of thumbnails lowered on the screen. BUT, when it got to where the roll name should have been, iPhoto moved into warp speed and skipped a whole screenful of rolls in a flash. The target roll was now off screen below the window. So I had to move the mouse down and let iPhoto begin scrolling the rolls up. Nice and slow, a few rolls at a time (I keep the rolls I'm not using closed.) Then JUMP - iPhoto goes into hyperspeed again and scrolls the rolls up so that the target roll is again off screen above the window. Again, I moved up to the top so iPhoto would scroll the rolls down. Back and forth, up and down, it kept flying past my target roll. With the target roll open, I could get the rows of thumbnails on screen nice and slow. But I have to reach that roll name, or my photos won't drop into the roll. It's the roll NAME that keeps getting flown past. (As if iPhoto is rejecting more changes to that roll.) If I close the target roll, I can't come within 2 or 3 rolls from it before iPhoto goes warp. Eventually I managed to get the target roll on screen while the mouse was at the top and iPhoto was scrolling down. It scrolled very quickly, but I managed to catch it before it moved off the bottom of the screen. Then I moved my mouse slowly down toward the target roll, one roll at a time (dragging all the while, never releasing) and was finally lucky enough to have the roll name of my target roll stay put and become highlighted. I dropped in the new roll, and it was correctly added to the target roll.
The third time I uploaded and tried to move was even more difficult. It took even longer to catch the target roll on screen. Lots more up and down. All of my imports yesterday (3 newly created rolls) were placed into the same roll.
Jailer Joe, is this what happens to you?
Has anyone else seen or heard of this? Any thoughts as to why iPhoto's roll scrolling goes out of control?

  • How do I sync my photos to iPhone when I get the message "A duplicate file name was specified"!!!! Note there are no duplicates in my iPhoto database

I have used iPhoto manager to ensure no duplicates in the iPhoto database. The message should at least tell you what the duplicate was called!!

I have a 27" iMac with the latest version of iTunes.  I tried restoring my iPod and even removing and re-installing iTunes.  What eventually worked for me was plugging into my PC and restoring/reformatting it to work with my PC.  I don't know why it wouldn't work with my iMac, but now it seems to be working.

  • Old Toad's automator workflow to backup Library6.iPhoto database

    Dear Old Toad,
I just today downloaded your workflow to backup the iPhoto database file, and am having problems making it work.
When I run it, either from the dock or the script menu, it launches Automator but then closes without doing anything. I don't get a confirmation screen, and no copy of the database is created.
So I opened it in Automator to see if editing it would help, even though my library is already named iPhoto Library and stored in user/pictures. When I dragged it onto the Automator window, there was only 1 action (Get Specified Finder Items) instead of the 4 that show up in the ReadMe. When I dragged it onto the Automator app to open it, I got nothing.
I downloaded it via Firefox 3.0.1 and got a 1.1MB zip, and I tried downloading it twice in case it had corrupted in the download, but no change with the second try. Downloaded from here:
    http://web.mac.com/toad.hall/ToadsCellar/ToadsCellar.html
    Running OS 10.4.11, iPhoto 7.1.5, on a G4.
    Something else I can try?
    Thanks,
    Daiya

Yes. Run the application like you would use the Save command in other applications, often. Running it again will overwrite the current backup copy with a new backup that will include all changes you've made to your library, new pictures, deletions, slideshows, books, etc.
I suggested keeping it in the dock so you can quickly run it after any changes you've made to the library. Being in the Dock makes it more convenient than having to go into the Application folder and launching it from there.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Playlists out of wack

So many of my playlists are out of order on my phone. Its so annoying. I listent to a lot of mixed CD's. They are all organized in order and play fine on my computer but are all out of wack on my phone. Anyone know what the deal is?
Match on the iphone is so confusing. Really frustrating. Apple makes things so confusing. Dont even get me started on Lion. haha

Sounds like you have corrupt program files or something. You may have to manually go thru, figure out whats missing and add it again. What I would recommend doing first is scanning the whole system with your aqntivirus AND scanning with a malware (Ad ware and spyware) Program like Ewido http://www.ewido.com
After that uninstall iTUnes AND quicktime from control panel>add and remove. Doing this will not make you loose any music. Then disable your antivirus and download/install the latest verion of iTUnes from apple.com
If your harddrive crashed, where did you get all your music back from? A backup or off your ipod?

  • Aperture & iPhoto Database

Do Aperture and iPhoto share the same database? Meaning if I started importing the images from my camera into Aperture, will I be able to access those photos from iDVD and iMovie?

The Aperture and iPhoto databases are completely separate. In order to have a photo show up in both, you'd need two copies of the photo, one in each programs storage location.
