IPhoto deleted in transfer from G5 to Pismo laptop G3

I made a fateful error and could use some help.
Bottom line: is there a way to copy my iPhoto application, all of its files and my library from my G5 to my old Pismo G3 laptop?
I tried coping my iPhoto library from my iPhoto (version 5) to what was loaded on my old Pismo G3 laptop (because I need to use the photos on a research trip). I'm coping the files via my firewire cable.
I copied the library, but the Pismo couldn't read the new pictures because the iPhoto version on my G5 is newer than what was on my Pismo. I thought I'd try to update iPhoto on my Pismo by transferring the files, application, etc., from the G5 onto the Pismo. Didn't work. Then, iPhoto wouldn't open at all. Said I needed to reinstall from my iLife CD, but I don't have one as iPhoto came preinstalled on my computer.
Can anyone help?
If not, is there a way to easily copy all of the images (I have about 3,000) from the G5 to the Pismo and use them in the picture preview software? I know I'll lose the data for each image that I stored in iPhoto, but I'm desperate.

Elissa:
The terms of use for the Apple applications restrict them for use on only one computer at a time. Here's an excerpt from the agreement.
2. Permitted License Uses and Restrictions. This License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on a single computer at a time. This License does not allow the Apple Software to exist on more than one computer at a time, and you may not make the Apple Software available over a network where it could be used by multiple computers at the same time. You may make one copy of the Apple Software in machine-readable form for backup purposes only; provided that the backup copy must include all copyright or other proprietary notices contained on the original. Except as and only to the extent expressly permitted in this License or by applicable law, you may not copy, decompile, reverse engineer, disassemble, modify, or create derivative works of the Apple Software or any part thereof.
So you need a new licensed copy of iPhoto 6 for your laptop. As far as preserving your metadata, Tutorial #1 describes how you can write the keywords and comments back to the original files so that other applications that can read that data will be able to view it.
If you had iPhoto 6 on both machines you could use iPhoto Library Manager to copy the rolls from one library to another and preserve the keywords and comments like this. But both libraries need to be at the save version.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

You'd have to ask Intuit. They might give you a cross-license to download and install the Mac version.

  • Lost my iphotos how to transfer from Xdrive

I downloaded all my photos to an Xdrive, somehow they all ended up on the desk top, over 8K photos. They put the computer into slow motion, so I selected them all and sent them to trash. This freed up the computer but had no photos left. I have iPhoto backed up on an Xdrive using time machine, can I transfer the photos back and have them end up with events folders and whatever was there before the loss? And how is this done, copy and paste?
    Thank you

Thank you for getting me started.
I got my Xdrive hookedup, went into migration assistant and started the process. the only thing I got into  applications, iPhoto is in there but when I progressed along it looked liked it was going to transfer all of the applications when I just wanted iPhoto, so I backed out of it. I thought about coping and pasting into iPhoto on my mac book, but didn't know how that would come out, especially after your comment say that can't be done. Looked on Pondini as well, what do I do now?
    Thank you

  • Music transfer from IPHONE to new laptop

    hi
my iphone wont transfer my music as states my i tunes library is already on a previous pc - which it was - but this pc crashed due to a virus and had to be scrapped - how do I transfer to my new laptop?
    thanks

OK, just encountered this yesterday with an iPod Touch that I bought my sister. I made an account for her on my computer and registered it with her iTunes account so she could install stuff on the new iPod to use on trip home. When she got home to sync it, she would get a message that it was going to be erased. We had no choice but to proceed with the sync. After that message though there was a dialog to either erase, merge, or cancel. I selected merge and the only thing that she lost was her folders which were easy enough to recreate since she didn't have very many to begin with. I think this is something new with iTunes and while it didn't destroy/lose any important data, it's not really how it should correctly opperate not only was there an extra dialog box, but it misinforms the user that their data is going to be erased when it will not if they choose to merge on the next dialog which they are then too afraid to reach for good reason.

  • IPhoto deleting photos from my Flickr Pro account

Sometimes iPhoto deletes my photos from my Flickr account. Is there any way to disable the delete permissions in iPhoto? Flickr people think it is a bug in Iphoto.

Does this happen after you delete the pics from iPhoto?

  • IPhoto 11 - Removing photo from one Flickr set

    Hi,
I'm wondering ig there's a way to use iPhoto 9 to remove a photo from one of my Flickr sets.
Sometimes I have a single photo on multiple Flickr sets. When I try to remove the photo from one of them iPhoto deletes the photo from the whole Flickr account. Including all other sets that I had the picture on.
    Mac OS 10.6.6
    iPhoto 9.1 (475)
    Thanks.

I believe this has to do with the restrictions from a free account.  According to the link below, "On a free account, Flickr limits the number of photos displayed. If you have fewer than 200 photos, we display them all. If you have more than 200 photos, only the most recent 200 are displayed."
Check your photostream to see if the pictures are still there but the sets have been removed.  If so, this is probably what happened. Hope that helps...
The site goes on to say: "It goes on to Your photos are not removed from Flickr, only from the list of your photos. If you blogged a photo and it no longer appears in your list, it will still appear on your blog, and the photo's Flickr page will still work just fine."

  • IPhoto crashed during transfer, deleted photos from my iPhone and I can't find them anywhere. :( ^

I was transfering over 4k photos and videos from my iPhone to my iPhoto.
It said it was done and asked my if I wanted to deleted the files. I deleted, once I needed space on my iPhone. The thing is, it took a lot of time deleting untill the crash message appeared.
iPhoto deleted over 2k photos from my phone, I open the iPhoto now and it doesn't show me a single photo.
When I "get info" on the library it says the file has over 10gb, where are these photos? What do I do now ?
I tryed the cmd+option and restoring or whatever, didn't work, and now the "faces" keeps searching for something.
    someone please heeeellp.
    thanks

When you delete any data from your phone that you are syncing with iCloud, it deletes it from iCloud.  When you deleted the contacts from your phone, they were deleted from your iCloud account.
Did you back up your phone while you still had that contacts on it, or do you have your contacts backed up anywhere else?

  • Re: iPhoto deleting photos from old library and new library

Hello.  I really hope someone can help me.  I'm about to tear my hair out.  I recently copied my iPhoto library to an external hard drive because I'm seriously out of space on my 24"iMac (2008).  I am a photographer and have a mess of an iPhoto library to clean up.  It was a VERY large volume, and it ran overnight.  It appears that everything transferred fine.  I did the transfer exactly as instructed by many forums: Home > Pictures > iPhoto Library, drag and drop to WD My Book 1 TB EHD formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  Then I opened iPhoto via the icon in the dock while holding down the Option/Alt key and chose the new location on the ext drive to point iPhoto to the new library.  My problem is this:   I went into the old library, which I renamed iPhoto Library - Old (after the fact, which I hope didn't cause the problem), and deleted an event that I didn't care about.  To my surprise, it deleted the event in BOTH libraries.  I have tried repeatedly to point iPhoto to the right library, both using the dock and going through applications.  It is as though the 2 libraries are somehow inter-connected, and not separate.  At times, I will open the old library through finder, but I can see it highlight the icon for the EHD and it opens that.  I am at my wits end, as at any given point in time I don't know which library it has brought up.  I am trialling Aperture, and am trying to move photos over to Aperture from iPhoto, but really need to free up space on my internal drive to be able to work with it. I'd eventually like to move the masters to the EHD, etc., but I'm still in the learning curve with all that (I'll be hitting that forum soon, I'm sure).  My highest priority right now is to figure out how to separate the 2 iPhoto duplicate libraries so I can delete the photos from the desktop without affecting the photos on the External Hard Drive.  I've tried everything I can think of and everything I found while scouring these forums.  Here is the information I think you would need:
                                                             - 24" iMac Intel, Snow Leopard (10.6.8), iPhoto '08 (version 7.1.5)
                                                             - 2 TB WD External hard drive running Time Machine, (so everything from the desktop is backed up).
                                                             - 1TB WD My Book that is formatted as I mentioned above, which I copied the iPhoto Library to.
                                                             - 1 soon-to-be-bald photographer.
Thanks very much in advance for any help anyone can give me.  I really like my hair, and don't wish to lose it!
    Gail
PS - Just a little background.  I have been working on this whole space issue for more than a week now.  This is the 3rd new external hard drive I've had this week due to "issues."  Had a problem with all 3 but finally figured this one out, and it's now working fine.  I am so far behind in some photo editing work because of the hard drive space issues, and I cannot seem to resolve them no matter how hard I try.  Hence the frustration.  Thanks again.

THANK YOU LARRY!!  I did not realize that once you switch libraries, it kept you in that library until you switch back using the option key. I thought that the iPhoto icon would take me to the new library, and going through finder to the old library name would take me to the old one.  I was actually in the new library the whole time, and all of the images I deleted were deleted from there.  I just switched back to the old library and all of the photos were still there.  I also tried deleting from the old library, which is what I wanted to do, and then switching to the new library and it did not affect the photos there at all.  So, this was indeed the answer.
Whew, what a relief. You're a life saver.  I might actually be able to get some work done now.
    Thanks again so much.
    Gail

  • Iphoto no longer deletes the images from iPhone 5s after import.

I have the latest version of IOS, and iPhoto.  Now, when I connect my iPhone 5s and import the photos and select the delete all that was imported option the photos on the iPhone are NOT deleted.
Everything is stock apple software.  Not jail broken, or any sketchy software installed.  All updates are installed immediately.  Has anyone experienced this problem?
    Ben.

    The short answer:
You're wrong.  Either the software is malfunctioning and is suffering from a critic bug, or the Hardware is malfunctioning and needs to be replaced.  Everything is under warranty so it doesn't really matter which one it is as long as the issue is resolved.
I just want to find out how many other users are experiencing this issue and help narrow it down before I report it to Apple.
    The long answer:
    Hi,
I'm a CSEE engineer with with a background in QE/QA. It's literally my job to define exactly what a piece of software and hardware products is supposed to do.
I validate the design of products, and verify the functionality of the product. For the record I do not work for Apple, and my employer is not affiliated with Apple in any way. Your answer blew me away!  LOL.
Wow.  Where to start? Any answer is not better than none.
Your answer is completely wrong and it's dangerous because your kind of answer will discourage regular people from asking questions on this forum. It sounds like it's coming form a professional and it sounds decisive, definitive, and final.  Almost like an edict! LOL.  Unfortunately it's also completely incorrect. That's the only reason I felt compelled to respond to your response.
    Saying:
    Terence Devlin wrote:
Never let your computer erase data without you first checking that the data is safe. Specifically never use iPhoto (or any other app) to delete the photos from your Camera Card or Phone. Disconnect the camera, check the transfer has gone correctly and then erase the data.
    is a ridiculous answer.
I am saying that as both an engineer with an extensive experience in QA/QE, as well as a lay person who prefers to to use Apple products. Software and hardware should perform as designed and as expected. Apple software and hardware usually does exactly that. When it doesn't it gets fixed very quickly as long as it's reported.
You' don't trust Apple software and hardware to behave as expected? Why buy Apple then if you have such a low opinion of the reliability, design, and quality assurance of their products? It's the most expensive hardware in the market in it's class; so it's definitely not the "bargain" factor.
I buy Apple products because they perform as expected, have a superior intuative user interface, and it is all backed by solid customer service. This is the first time in years that I've had to deal with such a glaring malfunction. Somehow in jumping from Mavericks to YosemiteI, and IOS 7.x to  IOS 8.x somehow the ball got dropped and I just want to know if this is a "one in a million case," or is it a more common bug before I report it to Apple. Either way it will be reported.
I am using two Apple products together and using Apple branded software designed specifically for those products on top of that. It's a MacBook pro, an iPhone 5s, and I'm using Apple's iPhoto as the interface. You actually said:
    Terence Devlin wrote:
... Specifically never use iPhoto (or any other app) to delete the photos from your Camera Card or Phone. Disconnect the camera, check the transfer has gone correctly and then erase the data.
    2. You can erase the photos from your Phone with Image Capture (in the Applications Folder)
So first you say specifically to "never use iPhoto to delete photos."  An app that was specifically designed by Apple for this purpose. Then you up the ante and and add "or any other app." But then step 2 you reverse yourself completely and say "use image capture" to erase photos. Why trust one Apple software, And distrust another? Why not trust the one designed for the purpose? Is it an article of faith? LOL.
I don't know if you ever noticed this; but, when you connect your iPhone to your MacBook, OSX automatically launches iPhoto as the de facto standard app for dealing with imports and deleting images from your iPhone.  Yes you can customize that; but, the default factory standard is iPhoto. This has been the case for years, and it has worked flawlessly until now.
To advise people to not trust the app designed by Apple for Apple Products to do the work it was designed to do is funny to say the least.
The expected behavior of iPhoto is that imported images to the MacBook should be deleted when I tell the software to delete images. When the software tells me that it is deleting images and then I find out that it did not; that is a bug, and critical one at that. Major software functionality is being affected and the software is not behaving as designed, advertised, or expected.
    I verified the bug by:
1- Saying no to the delete option at import time,
2- verified that the images have been imported.
3- disconnected and reconnected the iPhone.
4- When iPhoto informs me that all images have already been imported. I choose the option to delete images that have already been imported.
5- IPhoto still fails to delete the images.
I'm able to reproduce this bug 100% of the time. I want to know if others are experiencing this behavior.
Where did you ever get the idea that malfunctioning software, or software that is not performing according to design is a "Good" thing or that a bug is not a bug; but, a desirable feature?
From a lay person's perspective, the dialog box box in the iPhoto "import" function clearly states that import was successful, and asks if the user wishes to delete the photos that have been already imported.  This is the way iPhoto has always worked ever since my iPhone 3gs days.
The fact that the iPhotos app asks if you want want the pictures that were just imported DELETED from your iPhone means the expected software and hardware behavior is that the photos that were already imported should be deleted and the storage freed for others uses.  Having to use third-party software is not a real workaround or even desirable. There is something wrong with either the iPhone hardware, iPhoto software, OS X Yosemite, Or IOS 8.1.2. Any one of these issues is important enough that it should be looked at.
I need to zero in on the cause, and have Apple fix it. It could hardware or software issue.  It could be just me, or hundreds, or thousands of people. Everything I have is under warranty so the repair is free and it is expected. I have been able to consistently reproduce this error and I want to know how widespread this problem is.
The reason I buy Apple products at a higher premium instead of alternative brands such as Samsung, or Sony, or LG is the Apple reliability and user experience. If as a user I don't report a bug; then over the long-term, that reliability and user experience is going to degrade. I'm not investigating this as an "Apple" hater; but, as a supporter and an enthusiast. Finding out how widespread the problem is would help Apple out. When I'm on the solving end of this kind of an equation; I know I would appreciate all the information that I can get.
On a more personal level, this bug has already negatively affected my user experience. Recently we were visiting a national Park, I took hundreds of pictures, dozens of videos, and I dutifully imported them into my laptop that night and I elected to delete what has been imported. I assumed that when iPhoto reported the pictures were deleted; that this was indeed the case. The next day we went to another national Park and only a third through the day my iPhone 5s reported that there was no more storage. I then had to then manually delete over 900 photos and videos.
There is no batch delete in the iPhone "Photos" user app interface. I had to go into the iPhone "Photos" select menu, scroll through hundreds of photos. Find where I had imported the day before, and then delete well over 900 photos and videos manually by individually selecting each one and then clicking delete. It took over an hour.
Yes, in the select dialog box you can select the multiple images and then click delete once; But, on a moving boat with all sorts of distractions this little exercise took an exceedingly long time. It also took my attention away from my family for well over an hour. I didn't see anything that I now can remember during that time and I couldn't interact with my family the way they deserved. I have no memories of that boat trip either in my brain, or on my camera because I was busy deleting. It wasn't by choice, I had to either do the deleting right then, or miss the show that was after the boat ride. I chose the lesser of two evils.
The point of my little story is, that the boat ride with my family is an irrecoverable moment in time that is forever lost. It wasn't life-and-death, but it was precious and it is gone forever. There is no way to recover it. There are no time machines.  This simple bug, or hardware malfunction was the cause, and I want to make sure it doesn't happen to me, or anyone ever again.  That was the first time I experienced the bug.  Since then it has been the rule and not the exception.

    To transfer your photos:
Transfer and erase the Camera Roll:
Connect the iPad to your computer and launch Image Capture, iPhoto, or Aperture.
Select your iPad in the Devices list and click "Import all".
When the import finishes, you can erase the contents of the Camera Roll, if you want. That would be the quickest way, but deleting it on the iPad in the Photos.app would be safer, but more work.
Delete photos and video clips you synced to your computer using iTunes: Connect your device to your computer and, in iTunes, deselect the photos and video clips you want to remove from your device. Click Apply, and click Sync.
    Delete the Photo Stream contents:
How do I delete photos from My Photo Stream?
You can delete photos from your photo stream the same way you delete other photos from your iOS device or Mac. Just select the photos you want to remove, and tap the trash can icon or click Delete. On your PC, select the photos you want to remove from your photo stream, right-click, and then select delete. When you delete a photo from Photo Stream on one device, iCloud will automatically delete it from the Photo Stream album or view on your other devices. Learn more about deleting photos.

Apple's Icloud with Yosemite and IOS8 on devices is suppose to do just that - synchronize between devices so when you get home the pictures you took with our devices will magically be on you primary computer.
You may also want to look into other "clouds" available -- including clouds you can set up yourself (WD offers make your own cloud - haven't looked into it as don't need it)
Thanks for the constructive feedback! iCloud sync generally works well, though I believe it's time-limited-- You'll have to import them to your library from the iCloud sync to make it "permanent" within a few months.  I'm also using CloudStation on my Synology NAS, and I use Dropbox on all my computers although not for photos, because I'm still using their free account. Keeping iPhoto libraries up to date is not generally an issue.  Though I admit 2 of my 3 computers are on Yosemite and I am using iOS 8, I haven't specifically explored the differences in iCloud behavior on the new versions.
The deleting comment is more around temporarily storing them in one iPhoto library, uploading to Facebook, then deleting from iPhoto without deleting from FB -- it's not so much about how to transfer the photos around.  It's pretty easy to shoot 15 or 20GB of photos in a day with a modern camera, and you might find yourself without an internet connection, or at the very least, too spotty to copy that much data overnight.
For example, on a recent trip, my workflow was to load photos from my RX-100 via SD card into my MacBook Air which only has 128GB of storage.
So I'd copy all photos to iPhoto, flag favorites, edit, add to FB album in iPhoto, let that upload, then export to disk, let that sync to my CloudStation folder back on my NAS at home in the US, then finally delete all un-flagged photos in iPhoto (the "rejects"). By the end of the trip, even the 15GB of all of the flagged, edited photos took up too much space (in addition to all of the originals I was storing on disk), so I deleted the Facebook sync so I that was able to delete them from iPhoto.
Of course, I kept all my originals, but those were in 3 places: SD card, CloudStation folder on my Air, and on my NAS back at home (plus any devices that were powered on and syncing to CloudStation).
This worked great in Iceland where I had 50up/50down internet, but not so great at an agriturismo in Italy where I was getting something like 50% packet loss on their point-to-point wifi internet connection!
When I get home, every single original picture goes onto my master iPhoto library on the Mac Pro at home, but I treat the libraries on my laptops as transient places for editing and uploading, then deleting.  This is not just a multiple-computer problem, though -- I am sure many users just wish to upload then delete, and never keep their originals.

  • When using Iphoto to import photo from existing folder, what happens if I delete the photo in Iphoto ? Will the original file in the folder be deleted too?

When using Iphoto to import photo from existing folder to iphoto, what happens if:
    1. I delete that photo in iphoto? will the original file in the folder be deleted too ?
    2.  when importing, does the hard disk store 2 versions of the photo, hence occupying additional space in the harddisk?

1 - no  --  iPhoto only manages fiel within the iPhoto library - it does not ever do anything with files outside the library
2 - No idea what you are asking - by default (and strongly recommended) iPhoto copies the original to the iPhoto library and you delete the source file outside the iPhoto library - iPhoto alwasy has at least two versions of every photo and some times three - it always have the original, a thumbnail and once a photo is modified a preview - this is not optional - if it is not what you want then iPhoto is not the correct progrtam to be using for phopto management
