IPhoto deleting images?

I'm not sure if it was the most recent combined update or something else, but all of my images have been deleted from the library. They are still in the database, but not on the disk and not in the trash. Luckily, I have a recent backup, but I'll still have lost all my thanksgiving and Christmas photos. I did a spotlight search on my disk for images, but no luck...
This is definitely not something I did either on purpose or by mistake (I always check the trash before emptying it).
What is going on here?

first you must have a minimum of 10GB of free disk for the Mac to operate correctly plus any extra space for special programs - do not continue operating until you have adequate space - many bad things can happen if you do not have adequate free disk
as to these photos you may be able to recover them using a program like media recover - http://download.cnet.com/MediaRECOVER/3000-2242_4-42741.html
in the future never allow any computer to automatically delete photos from your camera - import them and properly disconnect your camera and be sure everything is good (I wait for at least one backup cycle) and then use the camera reformat command to erase the media card and renew its format

  • IPhoto deleting images in iPhone but failing to import as not enough space

I've lost the images and films on my iPhone as unfortunately I have the import set up to auto-delete (aargh!). Not enough disk space in iPhoto but it still deleted everything on my iPhone.
Any idea if I can recover the lost images from my iPhone?
    Thanks, Stephen

  • Deleting images using iPhoto and a 128GB SD card and a Sony a6000

I am having a problem with deleting images after transfer to my mac using either iPhoto or Aperture (All newest version) under Yosemite 10.10.2. What happens is I can transfer images and video from the a6000 into my mac but when asked to delete and answering that it is okay to delete I run into an issue. When after deleting the images in iPhoto and looking at the a6000's stored images there are blanks that have the filenames but know images. I have to format the SD card to get them cleared off the SD card. I would say it is a bug. It happens in both iPhoto and Aperture. And this occurs regardless of if I use an SD USB reader or hook up the camera video USB. The bundled software called PlayMemories from Sony doesn't has a feature to delete the images off the camera. The a6000 is a newer model and I think the way Sony organizes things on the SD card is crazy but it would be nice to have the delete feature in iPhoto actually works like every other camera I've owned.

Yes but... you really don't want to use the iPhoto delete feature.
Never let your computer erase data without you first checking that the data is safe. Specifically never use iPhoto (or any other app) to delete the photos from your Camera Card. Disconnect the camera, check the transfer has gone correctly and then use your Camera to Reformat the Card. This has three advantages:
    1. You know your data is safe - because you've taken the time to check it.
    2. Reformatting the card is much, much faster - takes a couple of seconds
    3. Reformatting also refreshes the Directory Structure on the Card, helping prevent issues with the card and prolonging its life.
    But that's my 2 cents.

  • Iphoto deleted all my images, im running on 9.5.1

iphoto deleted all my images, im running on 9.5.1. its been having issues recently but this time my laptops battery died in the middle of iphotos fixing itself and when my computer restarted everything is gone. Please help?

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

You should get your keyboard checked as it's repeating  on a lot of keys and makes you look silly.
There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • IPhoto preferences - delete images from camera after upload???

Is there a preference setting in iPhoto 6 to delete images from my camera's card after upload? Can't find it...

Hi, buzzworms. Yes, it's there — but don't use it.
Too many users of iPhoto have selected that option and then had an import go awry for some reason, only to discover afterward that even though the pictures weren't successfully imported, the card was erased and the pictures were gone.
Much better to leave that option deselected, so the contents of your card aren't changed by your Mac whether or not they've been imported successfully. It's free insurance against the loss of your pictures. Erasing the card in your camera only takes a moment after you've confirmed that the pictures are safely stored in iPhoto's library.

  • Image import + iPhoto freeze + Force Quit = Deleted images

My wife imported photos from our samsung nv10. The import went well. She then began editing the images (probably rotating them to be upright, redeye, etc.) when suddenly iPhoto completely froze up. She let the SWOD (spinning wheel of death) spin for 10 minutes and decided to Force Quit iPhoto. When she booted up iPhoto all the pictures that she had imported were no longer in the iPhoto library and having selected the 'Delete Images After Import' option they no longer exist on the camera either.
Fortunately these were not once in a lifetime images, but nevertheless, it would be great if anyone knew what happened to the photos.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Also check to see how much free space you have on the Powerbook. If TD's suggestions don't help low free space may be a factor. Report back with the amount.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • How can i delete images from iPhoto?

I can not delete images from iphoto. When I try to move pictures to the trash they do not move, and if I try to delete them by pressing "right click> Trash" they do not move! pretty much the only way I can delete pictures from iphoto is to delete the library.
Can anyone help me? I'm about to permanently delete iphoto from my macbook pro.
    it is nerve-wracking!

Where are you trying to move these photos from?  The following are the key combinations for moving from different entities in the library:
Deleting Photos from an iPhoto Library:
1 - from the Event or Photos mode: select the photo(s) and use the Delete key to move the photos to the trash bin. Then empty the iPhoto Trash bin as follows:
2 - from an album, smart album, book, slideshow, card, etc: select the photo(s) and use the key combination of Command+Option+Delete to move the photos to the trash bin.  Then empty the trash bin as above.
If none of the above work try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If the problem persists in the new library make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

  • Deleting images from hard drive

My hard drive warned me its capacity if almost full, so I deleted bunches of photos, but it made little difference in the amount of available space. Does this mean all my deleted images are still deep in there somewhere taking up space? If so, how do I get rid of them? I take piles of photos counting on beng able to get rid of them. Thanks.

Drag the photos from the Library to the iPhoto trash, then empty the iPhoto trash
Hitting delete in an album removes the pic from the Album, not the library.

  • IPhoto delete  problem

To quote Charlie Brown, "ARRRGGGHHH!!!" Now that I have that off my chest. I, too, am experiencing a problem deleting images from iPhoto 5. Like the proverbial bad penny, they keep coming back. Whenever I move images from the iPhoto main library to the iPhoto trash and select "empty" iPhoto crashes and will only respond to "force quit." I have left the pastel pizza spinning for hours. Only force quit will stop the show. I tried selecting individual images and using control, option, delete. The images do disappear from the library and the total count (now at 11,754) is reduced by the number of images selected. When I close iPhoto and then reopen it, the images are back. I tried deleting images and thumbnails from the iPhoto folder in "pictures" only to have those show up as empty rectangles in the iPhoto library. If I click on one of the empty rectangles I get all the usual information concerning the missing image in the iPhoto menu box but no image. I have tried everything I can think off short of reinstalling iPhoto. I would do this but some of the images cannot be replaced and, since the images in the various sub-libraries were taken over extended periods of time and share DSC numbers, my iPhoto will not export them to any other location or back up device. I am prompted that the duplicate numbers are "busy." My question is: Am I missing something basic, some magic bullet that will allow me to restore function to iPhoto while retaining the desired images or must I have a supreme zen moment of non attachment and start anew?

This is a cardinal sin in iPhoto (or in any database program) - by doing this you have corrupted your library - you should never modify the contents of the iPhoto library directly - only via the iPhoto program
You can try rebuilding your library using iPhoto and if that does not work using iPhoto library manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - but probably you are going to have to start over
Reinstalling iPhoto will not help because you have corrupted the data - the program is fine
If rebuilding does not work, you need to go to a backup before you corrupted your library or you need to start a new iPhoto library as follows - quit iPhoto, drag the existing iPhoto library to the desktop, restart iPhoto with a new, empty library and drag the originals folder from the iPhoto library on the desktop to the iphoto icon in the Dock - this will import all of the original photos form your old library (not the modifications, albums, folders or projects)
In the future never modify anything in the iphoto library and do not try to delete more than a small number (say 100 ) photos at a time
    Good Luck

  • Using iPhoto or Image Capture to download photos

I'm looking at a new Canon camera and under the Mac compatibility section, the manual says that you can download images from the camera using 1) Image Capture, 2) PTP, or 3) Canon's proprietary software. Does that appear to be saying that you can't just plug in the camera and import photos directly into iPhoto like I can do with my current camera? Or does Image Capture just work as a bridge between the camera and iPhoto more or less transparently? If I do have to use Image Capture for the downloads, then can I take photos from wherever Image Capture puts them and import them into iPhoto using Import to Library?

    William:
Which Canon camera are your looking at? All of the Canons that that shoot RAW formate and are compatible are listed here. All the other Canons are compatible.
IMO it's best to use a card reader and manually import to a folder on the desktop first and then import the folder into iPhoto. You can name the folder with identification of the photos inside and the resulting Event will have the same name. The delete the folder from the desktop and have the camera reformat the card for the next shoot. This saves wear and tear on the camera's port and battery and will avoid the potential upload cancellation due to low battery which can damage the library.
You can do the same thing without a card reader with Image Capture. Whatever you do, DO NOT let iPhoto delete the photos from the memory cards. Too many incomplete or aborted imports and complete deletions reported.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. • I updated iphoto and images weren't visible.

I updated iphoto and images weren't visible.  Still in the library but not visible.. did all the normal start up fixes like rebuilding thumbnails, database etc --- bt nothing worked...
I copied images folders ORIGINAL MODIFIED etc -to an external harddrive and tried to restore my library from time maching - but now it tells me I don't have the memory...
Of course I deleted the 'new' library and tried ... still the same information.
I am now copying my time machine iphoto library to an external harddrive - but what is the go with this?  I've also lost my iphoto books that took hours to build...
    I'm devastated!
    Any help would be appreciated!

  • Aperture Loses iPhoto Edited Images

    Hello,
I need help on importing iPhoto libraries.
I have 22 iPhoto libraries (iPhoto 8.1.2, 140GB total for all libraries) on an iMac 27, OS 10.6.8, and am importing into Aperture 3.2.2.  I imported each iPhoto library separately and rebuilt their thumbnails before each import.  It was my understanding that Aperture would import the original iPhoto images as well as the edited images along with metadata.  Now I have discovered that in my case it does this sometimes but not always.  When it does work Aperture shows two images in a stack, the iPhoto edited image (with the keywords "iPhoto Edited" added, and the iPhoto original image (with the keywords "iPhoto Original" added).  This is what I would expect.  However, there are many images that I edited in iPhoto that show up in Aperture as just a image, the one that was edited in iPhoto.  The iPhoto original image is not there.  Aperture has added the keywords "iPhoto Converted" (whatever that means) and "iPhoto Original" (which it is not) to this photo.  If I go back to these images in iPhoto and do a revert to original, iPhoto reverts the edit back to the (true) original image. So,both the original and edited images are in iPhoto.
I have rebooted the Mac and repaired permissions but that didn't help.
Getting my Aperture library setup has been a struggle and I appreciate all the help I have gotten.  It looks like I still need more.  Thanks!
    Mike

    Hello Leonie,
You were right on - many thanks!  I thought I was facing having to start over again.
I have found Apple's Aperture User's Guide very useful but nowhere in its 907 pages have I found your instructions described or "iPhoto Converted" defined.
It works as you described and I have some comments: (1) After the resetting all adjustments in Aperture the new version continues to have these same keyword tags as before the reset.  The adjustment badge is gone and the version number is appended to the image name.  (2) I also used "New Version from Master" on some iPhoto edited photos.  This creates a new version; however, all the adjustments, keywords and badges were deleted, but the version number is appended to the name. (3) I tried "Show Master Image".  This apparently only works in Split View & Viewer (dimmed out in Browser).  When I do this the adjustments are apparently not changed except for crops which are removed (this seems odd).  Keywords and badges are not changed.  There is no version number, of course, and the image is identified as a master image.  (4) I am curious about why using Aperture's iPhoto Browser to import photos results in two photos, the iPhoto original and the iPhoto edited.  They have the appropriate iPhoto Edited or iPhoto Original tags; however, except for rotation and cropping the iPhoto adjustments appear to have been reset.  The edited ones do not have an adjustment badge, even though it was adjusted in iPhoto.  All the images have a keyword badge and Aperture has added a keyword which it the title of the iPhoto album or event the photo came from.  They all have a Master Image label at the top.  I duplicated one of the iPhoto edited images.  The duplicate displayed a Master Image label and Reset All Adjustment was dimmed.
I would appreciate your observations on these comments.
Aperture is an impressive piece of software and thanks to your help I think I am finally ready to start using it!

  • IPhoto and Image Capture does not see the iPhone as a camera

Whether I launch iPhoto or Image Capture, in both cases the iPhone is not recognized as a camera. I am running firmware 1.1.1. I am afraid up upgrade to 1.1.3 because I do not want to lose my pictures. This was working at one point, but now it is not. I have no problems syncing music and video content within iTunes. I recently used migration assistant to move my home folder to my new Mac Pro running leopard. I am not sure if this is when it stopped working. I also tried using the Tiger machine at work, but the same thing happens there as well in both apps. Is there anything anyone can suggest?

This helped me. It is advice I found from a user named Carlosmara. First make sure iPhoto is closed and your iPhone is not connected. Then, as Carlosmara stated in his post,
"Go to your Library/preferences and delete the file com.apple.iPhoto.plist
IPhoto should recognized the iPhone again."
The file in question is under your user folder.
I then restarted my mac and plugged in the iPhone so that it would sync. After the sync, when I opened iPhoto, my iPhone was recognized and I could download the photos perfectly.
Hopefully this will help you as it helped me
