IPhoto Diet Destroys iPhoto

A lot of posters have advised using iPhoto Diet to slim down iPhoto libaries.
I did this, and it took out 3gb out of our 15gb iphoto library. Great. Then we opened iPhoto, and every rotated photo had a thumbnail, but when zoomed in or in edit mode, we get the gray square with exclamation point.
I searched the Pictures folder. The Rotated files are still there. I guess iphoto diet killed the link between the thumbanails and the full rotated versions.
I rebuilt the iphoto library as Help advises, this did not change anything. I have run disk permission repair with disk utility, as well as fsck -y -f in Single User Mode.
The problem here is that there are over 5000 missing rotated photos out of 15,000, so manually finding each photo and reimporting them would take a very, very long time.
What should we do? reinstall iphoto? How can we fix all these broken links?
I think its safe to say that iphoto diet is piece of garbage, and since its free, you get what you pay for.

khybro:
I take it you didn't make a backup copy of the library before running Diet. Do so now. Try selecting one of the "bad" apples as a test file (yes, pun intended) and do a revert to original. See if that will bring back the original and then it will create a new rotated file if that file is from a camera with the auto-rotate function. If that works you're home free.
If not you can try to rebuild the library as follows: launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select all the options. I have little hope that this will work but worth a try.
Your last option is as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the rolls from the original.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same rolls as the original library. However dates on the rolls may be different but can be edited as you would the roll title.
In the future I recommend you make a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto file after each import and after doing a lot of editing and organizing in the library. Then if you experience a similar crash all you need to do is replace the damaged database file with the backup copy and you'll be back to the same place in the library as when you make the backup.
Once this is completed you can delete the Originals folder from the desktop and the iPhoto Llibrary folder. If desired, you can keep the older library folder to try other fixes on it.
If you need to cull duplicates in the future I'd try using Duplicate Annihilator after making a temp backup copy of the library folder beforehand.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

Has anyone had any experience (good or bad) using iPhoto Diet (or any similar program) to delete the original photo files in the latest iPhoto (6.0.2)? I would like to get rid of all the originals of photos that I have modified, but am afraid of problems. Thanks!

The last I checked iPHoto Diet hadn't been updated to version 6. I would not use it until it is officially updated as per the developers site. With the entirely different folder systems it could cause serious damage if used. The developer is working on a universal binary version to take in both the PPC and Intel macs so it may be a while.

  • IPhoto Diet

Hi, its late and I'm not very technical - can anyone help me with iPhoto Diet?
    http://www.rhythmiccanvas.com/software/iphotodiet/index.html
I was installing it just now (died on me half way through for some reason, am going to try again when I have time... it took a while) and I now have a whole load of 'relinked' albums after my original albums. Do I delete the original albums now?? Am a bit scared to do this... Don't really understand, although maybe I will if I re-read the instructions tomorrow morning - if my 6 week old baby lets me get any sleep tonight!
    thanks.

iPhoto diet is documented not to work correctly with iPhoto '08 (version 7.x.x) and iPhoto '09 (version 8.x.x) and shoukld not be used with these programs
iPhoto Diet and iPhoto 7.x (October 22, 2007)
Currently, there are several incompatibilities with iPhoto 7 which prevent iPhoto Diet 3.1 from running to completion.
I suggest that you try to contact the author to get recommendations on how to proceed
Did you back up your iPhoto library prior to running iPhoto diet? If you did this is probably when you will need it.

It means that the application cannot find the Modified folder, which should be in your iPhoto Library Folder (inside your Pictures Folder).

  • IPhoto Diet or equivalent for iPhoto 8?

There used to be a freeware program called iPhoto Diet that eliminated the stores all of the duplicates iPhoto stashes away each time you edit or rotate a photo, which consumes an awful lot of hard drive space.
It looks like it was last updated for iPhoto 6. Anyone know if there is a version that will work for iPhoto 8? Or is there a comparable piece of software out there. Duplicate annihilator is fantastic for the duplicates you've created; but iPhoto Diet worked on the duplicates that iPhoto creates and that aren't normally visible to you.

    Sean
No there isn’t. And using such apps is strongly not recommended. There have been too many posts on here from folks who trashed their libraries using these kinds of apps.
If iPhoto is taking up too much space you can run your Library from an external HD:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you don’t want an app that preserves your Originals then simply, don’t use iPhoto.

  • After Using iPhoto diet iPhoto 5 doesn't work.

I removed all duplicates and iphoto just grinds and grinds. It can't display most thumbnails. The color wheel always spins. What happened?

    hello lori,
i've had similar problems with iphoto diet - though not with crashing. unfortunately, in my paranoia to not lose any photos, i've imported similar photos several times into iphoto. iphoto diet does strange things sometimes - in my experience, it doesn't always remove the proper duplicate, etc. so i've resorted to manually sorting each of 15K (ouch!) photos to remove the correct duplicate. i do this by sorting through the photos for different years. i've started working on 2004, and wanted to start with a clean slate and erase all the photos, then only import the orinigals i want, but iphoto 'residually' shows the saved thumbnails (i think they're thumbnails b/c they are only about 16kb, and don't open to full size - i get the 'white screen' that others have mentioned). i entered the iphoto folder (i know - a no no, but didn't know how else to erase 2004 photos) and deleted the 2004 folder.
sorry for being so wordy - can you suggest a way to eliminate my 2004 photos in a way that would be iphoto-friendly ?
    thanks for any suggestions.

  • Cannot launch Iphoto Diet, need basic help

In trying to rid myself of massive amounts of duplicate photos, I read to try the free Iphoto Diet. The directions of the website ask you to click on the icon to "launch" the program. I assume they are talking about the image to the right at the beginning. When I click on it, though, nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

    Hi mkmarshall,
I am confused as to what you are saying. You downloaded the program. Then you dragged the icon in the mounted image to the applications folder. Once in the application folder you double click the iPhot Diet application icon to launch the program. Is this what you did?

  • How can I back up the iPhoto library when iPhoto won't open and I can't simply copy the iPhoto library packet because "some of the data in the packet cannot be read from or written to"?

How can I back up the iPhoto library when iPhoto won't open and I can't simply copy the iPhoto library packet because "some of the data canny be read from or written to"?

Regarding not being able to open iPhoto.  As a test  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Were you able to create a new library?
If so then your current library is damaged and needs to be repaired.
Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start
with Option #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Iphoto 08 and iphoto 09  sharing a single album on a external drive

    Hello all,
I have a mac mini with iphoto 08 on it as well as a Drobo external storage device that houses all my photos video and movies - I just purchased a new 24" imac that came with iphoto 09 -
Can I share the iphoto album that resides on the drobo with the mac mini as well as the new imac -
I am asked to upgrade the album when ever I open the iphoto application - if I do this then the Mac mini can not open the iphoto application - I am guessing that this is due to different versions - imovie works perfectly -
    thanks !

Welcome to the Apple user to user assistance forums
No - as you have observed iPhoto '08 and iPhoto '09 use a different library structure and neither can read the others library - iPhoto '09 can convert '08 libraries to '09 but it is (as you are warned when you do it) a one way process - if you want to share a library all versions of iPhoto must be the same so you would need to purchase iLife '09 for the mini

  • I deleted unwanted photos from my iPhoto library, emptied iPhoto trash & Finder trash... this did not free up disk space. please help!

I deleted unwanted photos from my iPhoto library, emptied iPhoto trash & Finder trash... this did not free up disk space. please help!
    I have a 15-inch MacBook Pro (Late 2011) with OS X Mavericks 10.9.5
Last week, my 500 GB Harddrive had 120 GB free space. I was feeling crumby and decided to make productive use of taking a day off to lounge around. I snuggled up with my laptop and dedicated hours to meticulously combing through my iPhoto Library. I had 13,000 pictures, and I got rid of those I didn't want. Having said "sayōnara" to about 6,500 pictures, I then emptied the iPhoto trash and the Finder trash. I took delight in the iconic paper crumpling sound of them vanishing into the digital void.
Everything seemed perfect: the photos I loved were still there, the photos I loathed were gone, both trashes were beautifully empty. Having thrown away all of those awful, boring, and unflattering images of poorly light lunches and selfies gone wrong, my iPhoto library was half the size as before! I felt renewed, a little lighter, somehow more free, and I expected my hard drive to be a bit different to.
I eagerly checked my storage stats. My heart sank to see that my 120 GB of free space, was still only 120 GB of free space. I restarted my MacBook; this did not help. I restarted it the next day; this also did not help. It's been 5 days and the hard drive still has 120 GB free space. This is not an emergency and it will probably be a good while before I clutter my laptop to the brim. Yet while I am glad I don't have to see cringeworthy pictures of my ex's unmentionables every time I'm showing off things I do want to remember, I'm still disappointed and now obsessed with solving this mystery.
What is going on? I don't see them, so where are they hiding? How do I get the free space I should have earned from throwing away 1,000's of photos?!

    Thank you, Terence!
Yes, I only emptied the trash when it was really full, once I waited until the trash cans contained 2,600 photos and then I emptied them - Oooops! In the future, I'll keep in mind your suggestion of deleting less than 100 photos at a time.
I downloaded the iPhoto Library Manager and used it to rebuild my iPhoto. After a few hours of rebuilding, it generated a new copy of my iPhoto Library. This versions was nearly identical to the original (it was missing 5 photos and was therefore only 5 mb smaller). I guess my Library wasn't defective.
I checked my storage stats, and interestingly, using iPhoto Library Manager did help with the problem that developed after I re-indexed my hard drive. My hard drive is able to properly recognize data categories again, instead of listing almost everything as "Other". Understandably, my free disk space changed from 120 GB to about 60 GB, because my hard drive now contained a second copy of my iPhoto Library as well as iPhoto Library Manager. It seemed like all I needed to do was throw these away, but when I emptied the trash, my problem was not solved. My Hard drive now looked like this:
It appears to me that when I empty the trash, the things I throw away are just hanging around as backups instead of leaving! I went into System Preferences and turned of my time machine OFF. Now my hard drive looks likes this:
The back ups of the iPhoto files, and the program which I deleted, are still on my hard drive some where but now they are listed as "Other" instead of "Backups". Do you know where they might be and how I can delete them for good?

  • Lost link between iPhoto library and iPhoto.app

While learning how to use Photoshop Elements 4.0 and Bridge, I made the choice to "browse" in Bridge. When I next started iPhoto 6.06, my link to the Library was lost. I have worked with AppleCare support, done every exercise short of creating a new library and losing my organization. With 20,000 + photos I would like to avoid that exercise. I do have backups but am trying to figure out if I can solve this any other way. All my files are still in iPhoto Library, and I can see the organization of my albums in Bridge. With some exercises, I get the message: "Unreadable files: 1. The following file could not be imported: '/Users/john/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Library.iPhoto.'"
If I delete Adobe Photoshop Elements and Bridge from the hard drive, will this help? I promise I did not do anything within iPhoto Library in Finder!
    Thanks so much!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
There's absolutely no harm in using PSE with iPhoto, it's Bridge that's a killer. So that's what you chuck from your machine. Set up PSE as an external editor in the iPhoto Preferences. That way you can double click a pic in iPhoto and it will open automatically in PSE, save it PSE and have it come back into iPhoto seamlessly.
What's likely happened here is that you have (or Bridge has) made changes in the iPhoto Library Folder which has broken the link between iPhoto and the library files.
    Some things to try:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. Choose Locate, and point iPhoto at the iPhoto Library Folder.
What Back Ups do you have? If there's an up-to-date one, then try copying the library6.iphoto file from it to the iPhoto Library Folder allowing it to overwrite the confused one.
That said, if these don't work, your options will only be to create and populate a new library: To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same film rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual rolls to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
    Finally, the message
"Unreadable files: 1. The following file could not be imported: '/Users/john/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Library.iPhoto.'"
is because iPhoto will not import a picture that's in the active iPhoto Library Folder - a sensible precaution against duplication.

  • Can't view photos saved on cd from iPhoto 06 in iPhoto 08

When I insert a cd with photos saved from iphoto 06, iphoto 08 opens but the disc wont load in the application and just keeps "spinning" in the internal drive. Have tried it with different cds with iphoto 06 pictures with same result. Any ideas? (The drive does work properly with other discs for other apps.)

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You did burn those disks with iPhoto's Share->Burn menu option, right? Are you able to view the disks on the desktop via the Finder? If not and you have access to another computer, try them there. It they can't be opened by another computer then the disks have been damaged somehow or the burning was corrupted.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
