IPhoto differences

I know that for some third-party apps there are differences between the app store and the non-app store versions. Is this the case with any apple apps, especially iPhoto? I would like to upgrade to iLife 11, but I don't want to use the App Store unless I am absolutely sure that the boxed version and the app store version are exactly the same.

You'd have to read the specific licenses, but basically the app store grants you an individual license for up to five machines. The other license can be different.

Print quality difference between iphoto and aperture...?

when ordering books, is there a print quality difference between using iPhoto and Aperture? or are they sent to the same lab?
it's possible i may have some setting wrong, but when i order a book using iphoto, i never really feel the quality is that great. it's good, i just feel it could be a lot better. the print quality sort of reminds me of newsprint, albeit high quality newsprint. similar sized prints made at home on my basic 3-in-1 printer look better.

Previews are what you view on your display. When you import a photo into Aperture (and I'm pretty sure iPhoto as well), your computer automatically generates a preview for quick viewing. The original images are stored in your library, but it is the preview that you see.
In Aperture, you are able to set the size and quality of these previews. When sharing photos between Aperture and iPhoto, the process is as follows:
Let's say that your images are stored in Aperture, but you also want to be able to view them in iPhoto without taking up too much room on your hard drive. Essentially, if you were to import the originals into iPhoto as well, you would be storing two exact, yet separate copies of the same image on your hard drive. As you are aware, with large images (whether JPEG's, and especially RAW) this would put quite a tax on your storage capacity after not too long.
So, you have your images in one or the other (in this case Aperture), but you want to play around with them in iPhoto. What you can do, is open iPhoto, go to the File menu and then select, Show Aperture Library. This will open a window with all of the contents of your Aperture Library. You can then drag any images you want into iPhoto . The only thing is, you are not dragging the original JPEG's, but rather, the previews of those images. If you have those previews set to a lower quality (again for capacity concerns), you will only have lower quality and lower detailed images in iPhoto. These images might not be ideal, or even suitable for printing high quality prints. The previews that you generate in Aperture though can be adjusted to be extremely high quality with no size limits.
My thinking was that since you mentioned Aperture, it sounded like you had experience with working with it and with ordering a photo book through Aperture. I guess you were saying that you ordered via iPhoto, weren't happy with the quality and were wondering if Aperture created books were better.
Anyway, if this is the case, I cannot answer that for you. I have never ordered a book through Aperture. If the quality of your images is good, you should be able to get a decent product no matter where you order it from. There is not doubt that the materials used and the print shop that does the work makes a difference, but if your images are good, you should still get a decent product through iPhoto. Perhaps iPhoto isn't the way to go though if you have had poor experiences with them.
If you haven't used Aperture yet, I would highly recommend it though aside from the photo book aspect of this thread. It is a stellar product.

Photos is a completely new designed photo application, designed for Yosemite and the MacOS X versions to come. Many differences are under the hood. It uses the new system libraries and frameworks for more efficient image processing on the new powerful macs, like the mac pro, it is extensible by app extensions, if other developers will add functionality, and most important, it brings integration with iCloud Photo Library. With Photos you can store your photo library in iCloud and sync it across all devices.
Some features are still missing however, and you can continue to use iPhoto, if you like. Or create a small Photos library for testing and explore Photos, while keeping your main libraries in iPhoto.

Albums are arbitrary collections of photos. You decide what photos go in what albums. In your list these are the only items for grouping photos.
Books are exctly that. Books you design based on templates and buy in printed from from Apple. Ditto with Calendars

IPhoto Managed Library and Referenced Library. What is the difference?

In a reply regarding iphoto TD mentions managed library and referenced library. What is the difference and how do you set them up?

A Managed Library is the default setting, photos are copied into the iPhoto Library on import. In this scenario, iPhoto is responsible for the file management.
A Referenced Library means that iPhoto does not touch the files when you import them. They remain where they were and iPhoto References them in their location.
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
However, you need to be aware of a number of potential pitfalls using this system.
1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures
2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
Always allowing for personal preference, I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers.
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.

Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
*For working with an External Editor*
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Lots of folks are attracted to the idea of a Referenced Library - well I can see my files! But, frankly, unless you're an experienced Mac user I would stay well away. Not infrequently we see folks here complaining that iPhoto has "lost their photos" when what has happened is that they have imported from the Camera Card in Referenced Mode, then erased the card. Even more common, any change in the path the the file - renaming a disk, folder or file - for instance when migrating to a new machine, when trying to make space on the start up disk by moving files off the an external - also causes big problems.
If you really, really want to run a Referenced Library check out Aperture. It has tools that are much stonger in the area - like migrating tools and reconnecting tools.

I have had my MacBook for 5 years and ever since upgrading to the new system which added the App Store to my computer, I have been curious about the difference between the iPhoto that came pre-downloaded when I purchased my computer 5 years ago and the iPhoto available for purchase on the App Store. What makes the iPhoto from the App Store so different that I have to pay $15 for it, when I already have it for free on my computer?

What's the difference between masters, modified & original in iPhoto?

Could someone please explain the difference between masters, modified and originals in the iPhoto Library? I am trying to make a backup online and want to cut out unnecessary transfer of data.
I've recently installed an online backup service (with LiveDrive) and my MacBook Pro is slowly uploading over 50gb of data. This is frustratingly slow and I suspect unnecessary. I've instructed the program to not back up thumbnails and previews, but don't know whether to limit the backup to, say, masters. What are they?
I've read quite a number of discussions from which I've learnt a lot - for example that iPhoto library is where the files are kept containg the data for photos, and that iPhoto is an ap that draws on those files. I can guess the difference between files containing original data and those with modified. But what are masters? And could I safely restrict the backup to masters?

Here's what I do:
My Library lives on my iMac. It’s Backed up to two external hard disks every day. These disks are permanently attached to the iMac. These back ups run automatically. One is done by Time Machine, one is a bootable back up done by SuperDuper
It’s also backed up to a portable hard disk when ever new photos are added. This hard disk lives in my car. For security, this disk is password protected.
I have a second off-site back up at a relative’s house across town. That’s updated every 3 or 4 months.
My Photos are backed up online. There are many options: Flickr, Picasa, SmugMug etc. However, check the terms of your account carefully. While most sites have free uploading, you will often find that these uploads are limited in terms of the file size or the bandwidth you can use per month. For access that allows you to upload full size pics with no restrictions you may need to pay. Only some will upload and store Raws etc.
The added advantage of using a site like SmugMug / Flickr is that the images are available to share and can be viewed from any computer. And for the ones you don't others to see, many of these sites also have password protection. It's for reasons like these I chose SmugMug, but YMMV
Every couple of months I test the back ups to make sure they are working correctly. It’s very easy to mis-configure a back up application, and the only way to protect against that is to do a trial restore.
So, if you look at my set up:
I have daily protection against the Mac going down, I have a recent version in my car, and a 3 month version across town. That's all protection of my entire library - imges, database and so on.
Then online, I have my photos, so that at least I have them if the Mac crashes, the house burns down, the car is stolen and my sister's house collapses...

IPhoto Library Manager--File Size difference of merged library

I just use iPhoto Library Manager to merge 2 libraries and it worked great. There is a huge difference in the size of the libraries. The original library is 17.48 GB. The merged library which had an additional 4.03 GB of pictures/events added to it is only 11.28 GB. I would have expected 17.48 GB + 4.03 GB to add up to 21.51 GB. Can anyone explain? What has been lost?
Additional info: I get the same 244 events and 4426 pictures whether I open the iPhoto Library or the "Merged Library" through the finder window.
I have iPhoto 7.1.3 and iPLM 3.4.2 installed.

Do you sync your photos with an iPod using iTunes? If so this creates a cache file that can be very large indeed. It would not be carried over in the Merge.

RGB boost difference between Aperture 2 and iPhoto

I'm new to Aperture. I have been using iPhoto and noticed that there is a difference when you boost RGB values in iPhoto and Aperture. Does anyone know what other values iPhoto is manipulating when modifying RGB values that Aperture isn't?

IMO today you are very likely to be best served by the inexpensive Photoshop Elements. However, Adobe's world is changing at the end of this month (March 27) with official announcement of MacIntel versions. You may want to re-ask this question then, being careful of April Fool's Day wags.

Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar. For iPhoto 9.4.3 and earlier select Size = Medium or Large. For iPhoto 9.5 and later selct 480p.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it. If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Software or eBay.com. Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides themes from iDVD 5-7. The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:

70GB for 15,000 photos is reasonable, yes, if the photo files are large.
DO NOT meddle with the contents of your iPhoto Library in any other way than using the commands available in the iPhoto application. What appear to be duplicate files stored in different parts of the library are NOT duplicates, and if you attempt to save space by deleting things in the Finder, you will wreck your library and land in a world of trouble.
