Iphoto Difficulties

When I click on iphoto it says "The Library is not compatible with iphoto" and it gives me an option to Quit.
How do I make my iphoto work?
Maybe a new download?

What has changed sine you last successfully used iPhoto?
What version of iPhoto do you have?
This can be a sign of a corrupted library or can be caused by accessing und upgrading the iPhoto library with a newer version of iPhoto

  • Can I avoid Iphoto problems in upgrading from Snow Leopard 10.6.8 to Mavericks?

I've read that upgrading to Mavericks involves problems with Iphoto. I have an older version of Iphoto (7.1.5). Should I upgrade to a newer version of Iphoto BEFORE I upgrade to Mavericks? If so, do I have a choice and to what version? Is there any reasonable way to avoid IPhoto difficulties in moving to Mavericks?

This screenshot shows which previous versions of iPhoto are compatible with Mavericks.  It also indicates which versions qualify for a free upgrade to iPhoto 9.5.1 and which require a purchase:
Note 1:  every day more users are reporting problems with iPhoto 8.1.2 so I've included it in the non compatible category.
Note 2:  If your previous version of iPhoto was iPhoto 7 (08) or earlier you'll need to download and run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 application on the library before opening it with iPhoto 9.5.1.

  • Rebuilt Library in iPhoto 5

    Hi guys,
My friend recently "lost" all of her photos on her Powerbook G4 and iPhoto wouldn't open. They were still being used for her screensaver but she couldn't find them anywhere in finder using spotlight.
I helped her to re-build the library using iPhoto Library Manager and the files were moved to another hard drive. (hers filled up before the end of the re-build at the first attempt.)
However, even though all of the thumbnails are now back in iPhoto and the albums are happily brimming with photos again, when she tries to browse the rebuilt library in finder, the directry structure has changed. The albums are divided by year as before, but now have random numbers rather than names and not all of the photos are there. Also, they have been moved to random places chronologically. (photos taken in 2008 now in 2003 folder etc.)
Does this need a 'Repair Permissions'? Will this work if the rebuilt library in on an external drive? Any other tips?
    Thank you in advance!

If you prefix a quote with a > then you'll get that italic effect. Good for clarity.
    Thanks.
iPhoto is a database. It's not an image viewer.
I had no idea, as on the surface it look like every other image viewer I've used, but point taken.
The point is simple: do you want to manage and work with the files or the Photos? If you want to work with the Files, use the File Manager - the Finder. If you want to use manage the Photos use iPhoto.
I would say the point is that, for other software I've used, "photo" and "file" are not treated as mutually exclusive. But guess this goes back to the database thing. I would question the amount of extra functionality that this "database" offers over a viewer though.
And this way you have exactly a two ways to find your photos: date taken or Filename.
If you use iPhoto you can search for that photo by date, filename, title, filename, keywords, camera model, lens, aperture and more, plus any compound of them.
I think we're at cross purposes here. You seem to be answering a different point to the one I was making. Mine referred to having to open iPhoto in the first place, so the search options offered within iPhoto are irrelevant.
If you were in email and using Apple's Mail programme then click on the Photo Browser as indicated above. Find the photo and drag it to the message window. Or use the Attach command as indicated in the first illustration above. Or use a media Browser. Or just drag and drop from the iPhoto Window or... or... or...
You mentioned Entourage earlier. Is the same the case for that?
If you have more than 100 photos, if they were taken on more than one date, there is no way the rooting through the iPhoto Library Folder is faster.
With the speed at which iPhoto a) loads and b) scrolls the thumbnails for large albums, I doubt that. (I'm speaking from experience here at least, if nowhere else)
Yes I'm aware what the word means. Here's another way of looking at it: Integrated throughout the OS. There is nothing negative about this. Don't want to use iPhoto? Don't. Don't want to use some of the features? Don't. They're opportunities, that's all.
Freedom to choose is all very well, but when the vast majority of casual or "domestic" users make the migration from PC to Mac, or from whatever photo "management" software they are using to iPhoto, I would wager that they are unaware of how much the integration of iPhoto will affect their ability to work in their chosen way.
(I think that, given the nature and number of similar post on the discussion boards, its a pretty safe bet.)
It certain isn't implicit when iPhoto's dialogue pops up to entice you to import your photos with it.
Depending on which version of iPhoto you use, there are some similar tools to Lightroom, but Lightroom is a pro level application, iPhoto is geared for the domestic point and shoot user primarily. There's a price difference too.
You're right, there is. And I think you get what you pay for. Tons of features and tools, and robust file management.
That said, if you find iPhoto difficult, good luck with Lightroom
I do find iPhoto difficult. However, the difficulty is of its own making.
As a user of Lightroom, I have absolutely no difficulty in using the file management part of the software, which is where the difficulties seem to arise for iPhoto. In fact, its probably more intuitive.
I've certainly not had any of the aforementioned issues regarding permissions, having the wrong font installed, disappearing photos and corrupting libraries by either browsing my file manager, or breathing too hard near the directory structure.
The main issue would now seem to be how to get the photos back safely from iPhoto into a viewer that does essentially as much as iPhoto, but with a lot less fuss.
Is drag and drop from within iPhoto (and having to copy everything from one location to another) the only way to do this?

A bunch of totally different questions
iPhoto is an application and it is in your applications folder - is it there? It must be in teh Applications folder on your boot drive - it can not be on an external drive
The photos are kept in the iPhoto library (by default and highly recommended) - is that what you deleted? It can be anyplace by by default it is in your pictrues folder
Time Machine is a backup program that backuse your your Mac - you do NOT directly access its backup files but you use the Time Machine application to restore files - see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US for details
Your post is not at all clear as to what you have or what you want to do
If in fact you do have a copy of the photos on an external hard drive as you say you thikyou do them you launch iPhoto and import them to iPhoto (file menu import  --  or drag them to the iPhoto icon in the Dock)
If you have a time machine backup of your iPhoto library and you want to use that then you launch TM and go to the time you wna tto restore from, select the iPhoto library and click restore
If the above does not cover what you have and what you want please post back with exact details of what you have and what you want to do

    Wow. Okay...
I'll let the real veterans in this forum tackle your issues one after the other. But, I can tell you, all will be well.
My only comment would be re: your computer specs:

To be completely honest, FCPX is a RAM hog. It just is. But, RAM is relatively cheap, and the pay-off is good.
4GB is right on the edge, IMHO. 16G is ideal.
I wish you luck, hang in there, and standby for more help.

I am using Lightroom on my MAC where I import the finalized JPEG-pictures into iPhoto to create a slideshow (for instance in combination with films). When exporting the slideshow with a 1080p resolution to iTunes I experience difficulties (missing slides and black transitions). When using JPEG-pictures directly from the camera there are no problems, so the manipulation in Lightroom seem to cause corrupt files. Does anyone recognize tje problem and could it have anything to do with the introduction of the Yosemite software? Is Lightroom already Yosemite-proof?

In iPhoto 11 the Originals folder is renamed Masters.

    Hello,
I am using version iPhoto'11. Since I installed this version I experience some difficulties. After importation of pictures I can see the pictures under Library/Pictures but not under Library/Events. However I can see the event with the event title, the number of pictures and the pictures itselve as small thumbnails. BUt ounce I want to open the event to see the pictures in full screen the event title annouces 0 pictures and no pictures are visble anymore to mee. I have checked if the pictures are marked as hidden and this is not the case. What's going wrong. All the other events are visible in a normal way.
The albums with the same pictures into them are visible.
    Thanks for your help,
    Raf

Make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - delete  the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select options #1, #2 and #6.
Click to view image full size

    Try a reset Carole ...
    Reset the device:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings

  • Iphoto becomes difficult to work with if i click on a photo at full size

    hi, i'm using iphoto '08 version 7.1.2.
so i'm viewing my photos inside an event at the largest size possible, ie. one image at a time on the screen. i can scroll through the photos using the up/down arrows on my keyboard or i can click on the up/down triangles at the bottom of the scroll bar on the right hand side. this is all good - however - the moment i click on a photo or click on the grey area either side of a photo, suddenly if i use either arrows they have lost their place and will begin scrolling from the first photo again (if i press down) or the last photo (if i press up). so what happens is i will be showing someone my pics, click on the photo somewhere then hit up or down to go to the next photo but it will jump back to the beginning or end, meaning i have to try and find the photo i was up to again.
another thing that happens if i click on a photo or the grey area either side is that a lot of the functions will suddenly grey out (for example "split", "rotate", "hide" and "flag" (although not "edit") at the bottom of the screen or everything except the editing functions and "show photo info" if i ctrl click on the image.
note that all the problems I've mentioned only occur if i'm viewing the images at maximum size, if they are smaller none of this happens, of course i want to view my pictures at maximum size though because the next size down is like a quarter the size.
surely this is a bug/problem and not the way the software is designed? i can't imagine apple would design the program to be so user unfriendly like this.
any help would be much appreciated!
    cheers, darren

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.

You're not the first to comment on this change in v7. iPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback if you don't like it.
another thing that happens if i click on a photo or the grey area either side is that a lot of the functions will suddenly grey out (for example "split", "rotate", "hide" and "flag" (although not "edit") at the bottom of the screen or everything except the editing functions and "show photo info" if i ctrl click on the image
When you click on the grey area you're telling iPhoto to focus on that space, and not the pic. As the grey space contains nothing to split, rotate etc those buttons are not available. So, no bug there. If you click on the Edit button it won't edit the pic you're looking at, but revert to the first pic in the Event/Album. Why? because when you clicked in the grey are you told iPhoto to ignore this pic.

  • IPhoto 08 makes it difficult to print greeting cards

It seems to me that it should be easier to print greeting cards yourself from iPhoto. I have tried many ways and there are no options to adjust the print size. No one makes paper the correct size, and printing on a Letter sized page doesn't work. In fact, it seems to crop the bottom of the page off even printing on a larger paper.
Has anyone had luck printing cards? The idea of ordering them seems absurd.

Yes, the card feature is designed to encourage ordering thru Apple. If you have a 3rd party image editor that handles layers, like Photoshop Elements for Mac, you can follow Tutorial #8 to print cards.
    Happy Holidays
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • IPhoto.db and others VERY DIFFICULT QUESTION!

I have an "iPhoto library" folder which contains an iPhoto.db file. What is this file?
Then within this folder there are some other folders:
    let say one is called "Laura" which contains: .ipspot / iPhotoLock.data / Library.data / Library.iPhoto / Library6.iPhoto / Thumb32.data / Thumb64.data / ThumbJPG.dat / AlbumData.xml / Dir.data
This "Laura" contains a subfolder called "GOTEBORG" which is itself an iPhoto library with all the files I mentioned above for "Laura".
The only file I find ONLY in the first level folder "iPhoto library" is this iPhoto.db
I'd like to have all the "Laura" and "GOTEBORG" pictures in 2 separate iPhoto libraries (I use iPhoto buddy to switch between them), but I'd also like these folders to be independent, ei: not have "GOTEBORG" within "Laura"....
Can I take this "GOTEBORG" folder and drag it out of there and keep maintain a organised iPhoto library for it?
Same question for the "Laura" folder.
Thanks in advance and good luck!
    JP

    JP:
You might want to consider using the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager because it will let you move rolls or albums of photos from one library to another and maintain the keywords, comments, etc. That way you can put all of your GOTEBORG photos in the Laura library in one roll and then use iPLM to move it to the GOTEBORG library. Later you can delete those from the Laura library. The same would go for the Laura photos in the GOTEBORG library. iPLM makes it pretty seamless and easy to organize multiple libraries.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. • IPhoto is difficult to use

    Hi,
My dad just got an iMac. He's loving it...iPhoto and iTunes have made him like tackling computers again. However he called to tell me that he can't get his printer a canon i860 to print borderless prints or anything besides 8X10. I told him that iPhoto was easy to use and that he should just make sure he's selected the right size that he wants to print and click print.
It never worked. I thought this funny so I tried to print from my iPhoto. Same problem. I can't get it to print the photo sizes that I want either. Anyone have any idea why this is? I have a feeling that iPhoto is nothing more than an overblown photo editing software that doesn't know how to print. And from the looks on this forum, I don't think I'm too far from the point. Please help me get iPhoto to be easy or tell me about software that is.
    Thanks.

To supplement briandallas post here is a step by step procedure to obtain borderless prints.
<blockquote?<i>Steps for printing 4 x 6 borderless prints from iPhoto:
    1 - crop the photo to 4 x 6 beforehand in iPhoto.
2 - in Page Setup select your printer, proper page orientation and 4x6 borderless.
3 - click once on the picture you want to print to make sure it's selected.
4 - now click on the Print button in iPhoto.
5 - in the iPhoto print window, select your printer again, select Style = "Standard Prints", Size= 4x6 and click on One photo per page.
6 - click on the Print button.
That should get you your borderless prints.

  • IPhoto is being difficult with exporting and previewing

I recently bought my Mac Pro off of a friend. He still had it under his name, and I changed it to my name under system preferences. I think it messed up the uploading, exporting, importing, and viewing of my pictures. I can upload them to the computer fine, but when I go to export or view them in iPhoto, all I get is a black screen. Exporting, and it tells me unable to create "users/(friends name)/documents/" Any help would be appreciated and I don't want to lose my pictures. I've already tried to rebuild the library with iPhoto Manager and with iPhoto itself. Thanks for the help!

    JMHeck wrote:

It's a question of what exactly you did when you "changed it to my name under system preferences".
This is not exactly what you're looking for, but, IMHO, the best thing to do is to back up your photos (make sure they are the photos—double-clicking on one of them should open Preview) and anything else you want to keep to an external hard drive; then start up from the Install DVD, erase the internal disk (this destroys all data on the disk), re-install the OS from scratch, re-install your apps from the original installers, and restore your photos and docs.
This way, you start with a clean slate, which is what you want to do with a used computer (Mac or Win doesn't matter).

  • Difficult to edit titles and captions in iPhoto '11

Everytime I edit the title field or the caption field under information of each picture, iPhoto has a tendency to sometimes either "Undo" what I just typed, or jump to the end of the sentence.
    For example, the title is
    0707_10_TietgenJazz
As I start to edit it, marking the first part, typing in 07.07.10 instead, and in a second it will go back to the original title.
Its even more frustrating to edit in caption, as it constantly undos. So right now I can only copy paste from elsewhere.

    DanShou,
    "You're not alone".
I've just imported a pile of new photos. While editing both the name and description fields, iPhoto "sometimes" ignores my text (during text entry) and reverts to the previous text.
I've tried to reproduce this issue to see if I can identify a root cause, but there doesn't seem to be a specific trigger. Sometimes it works without issue, others it really frustrates me.
I've taken to writing some of my descriptions in Text Edit and copy/pasting it into iPhoto.
Has anyone else found this issue?
    Steve
