I have an old MacBook Pro, which just upgraded to OS X 10.10.3...in the process iPhoto disappeared, along with all my photos! I'm shocked, and have no idea what to do (I'm the furthest thing from tech). Did the photos go into iCloud? I have a photos icon now in the place of iPhoto, but no photos! Any suggestions or help?

Niel, thank you! Can't get iPhotos, but found my photos after clicking "photos" in the new app, after your suggestion. (option, click). Whew! I panicked, and appreciate your help. I'm going to miss my old iPhoto!

  • Iphoto disappeared when I updated to OS X Yosemite - help!

iphoto disappeared after I updated to Yosemite. When I spotlight search it, I'm alerted my version is incompatible with Yosemite, and need to update. When I go to update, I'm told this version isn't available yet in my country (USA). The app and all my non-backed up photos are gone... how do I recover this?

    1. First make a back up:
    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store
    2. Download the App:
Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

    What should I do?

Hey there! So, I already contacted Mac App Store support several times, the response:
    - "Apple is currently working toward a resolution for the issue you have reported. You will receive an email after the matter has been investigated and further information is available.
Thank you for your patience. Apple wants your iTunes experience to be as enjoyable as possible"
I answered I really needed it, and if they knew the estimated time it would take to solve the issue. Here's the last response.
    - "According to your previous correspondence, you have not been able to install iLife after reinstalling OS X Lion. I understand that this issue is under investigation, and that you would like to know the amount of time needed to find a resolution. As a fellow iTunes customer, I certainly understand that you need to use iPhoto for professional reasons, and I'll gladly help you to resolve this problem.
Unfortunately, I am unable to give you the exact amount of time this issue could take. I do assure you that our engineers are currently working towards a resolution. "
I'm going to an Apple Sotre Genius today, in 2 hours. I'll keep updated!!

  • Help! iPhoto disappeared when upgraded to maverick

Help! How can I get my iPhoto and pictures back? I upgraded to maverick and my iPhoto disappeared along with all my pictures! I'm afraid that even if I purchase the new iPhoto for $14.99, it would still be wasted effort if I can't get my pictures back! Try to remain calm but I'm so angry right now. Please help!

Do you have an iPhoto library in your Pictures folder?

  • Photos in iphoto disappear

When I open iPhoto and select a source (library), the photos appear but then some of them start to disappear. As I scroll down to look at more pics few of them flash for a moment and then they're gone. What's happening?

    Sparky56
Had a crash recently? You may have a damaged database file, but your pics should be just fine.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums back.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
    Regards
    TD

  • Photos in iPhoto disappeared

My photos in iPhoto have disappeared.  When attempting to open iPhoto, I get the message to choose a Library.  There is no library to choose.  How do I get my photos back?

Download and use  Find Any File  to search for "Library6.iPhoto".  FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't, like invisible folders, packages, etc.  If you find such a file you can locate where your library is from the search results window.
First look in your Pictures folder and see if it's there.  That's the default location unless you moved it to an external hard drive previously.  If it was on an exteranl hard drive read this: Photo Library Manager Help - Disappearing iPhoto libraries on external drives

  • Pictures in iPhoto disappeared after downloading Mavericks.

I downloaded mavericks and all of my pictures disappeared from iPhoto.  Help! Can I get them back?  If so, how?

One last test to see if there are 8000 master photos still in the library.
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • IPhoto disappeared. Question mark in its place.  Help

Help! My iPhoto application disappeared and there is only a question mark in its place.  I do not have the disks to restore.  what do I do??

If yhou have Time Machine running on your Mac go to the Applications folder, enter Time Maching, go back till iDVD is there and restore it.
Otherwise you can contact Apple and for about $10 get replacement disks for hyour Mac.  Lastly, you'll have to purchase iLife 09 and do a custom install of iDVD from it.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.
Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  Select Size = Medium or Large.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Why have all photo titles in iPhoto disappeared?

All the image titles I typed in my iPhoto album over the past years have suddenly disappeared and been replaced by image numbers!  Does anyone know why this happened or how to restore the titles?  This is a disaster!

What version of iPhoto? What version of the OS? what has changed since you saw the titles?
In short we are not mind readers and we can not tell you how something happened unless you tell us what you have done and what symptoms, error messages, etc you have

  • Edited photos in iPhoto disappear?

I frequently use iPhoto for photo editing and storage and have encountered few problems in the past 2 years. However.....
Some of my edited photos are disappearing! They show up as thumbnails in the event and elsewhere, but when I double click to see the image alone (in iPhoto), it shows up as a gray error symbol on a black screen. As this file is missing, I can't upload the photos to Flickr or do anything else with them.
When I revert the image back to its original, I can see it and upload it wherever I want, but as soon as I try to edit it again, it disappears.
    Anyone have any solutions???

      First try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home()/  Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your Home()/ Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences..
If the problem persists  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. after the above then your current library is damaged.  If that's the case make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Why do certain iPhotos disappear in slideshow?

I am putting together a slideshow for my son's birthday party. Why do certain photos, which I can see in the library, disappear in the slideshow?  There is just a black exclamation mark or blank screen during the slideshow. Thanks for any help.

The exclamation mark is an indication that the file path/link between the thumbnail and the full size master has been broken. Do the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window. Be sure to follow the circled recommendation in the screenshot.
    2 - run Option #4, Rebuild Database.

  • Iphoto disappeared in OSX lion!

I had the entire ilife suite installed in snow leopard along with lots of iphoto and garageband projects, and when I upgraded to OSX lion it all disappeared. To add to that I now have to go to the mac app store to purchase them if I want them now ***!

    Here's your solution:
ok...I had the same problem. I did a fresh install of Lion on a new imac and couldn't find iphoto.
Make sure you've registered your computer and copy of Lion and go to the Mac App Store...not the one in iTunes but the one that sits as a seperate app on your dock (or in your applications folder).
Once logged in you can go to the 'purchases' tab. You should see options to accept and download your missing iLife software there. (ie iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand). It looks like iDvd was scrapped in this latest release unfortunately.
